Li-metal batteries (LMBs), especially in combination with high-energy-density Ni-rich materials, exhibit great potential for next-generation rechargeable Li batteries. Nevertheless, poor cathode–/anode–electrolyte interfaces (CEI/SEI) and hydrofluoric acid (HF) attack pose a threat to the electrochemical and safety performances of LMBs due to aggressive chemical and electrochemical reactivities of high-Ni materials, metallic Li, and carbonate-based electrolytes with the LiPF6 salt. Herein, the carbonate electrolyte based on LiPF6 is formulated by a multifunctional electrolyte additive pentafluorophenyl trifluoroacetate (PFTF) to adapt the Li/LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 (NCM811) battery. It is theoretically illustrated and experimentally revealed that HF elimination and the LiF-rich CEI/SEI films are successfully achieved via the chemical and electrochemical reactions of the PFTF additive. Significantly, the LiF-rich SEI film with high electrochemical kinetics facilitates Li homogeneous deposition and prevents dendritic Li from forming and growing. Benefiting from the collaborative protection of PFTF on the interfacial modification and HF capture, the capacity ratio of the Li/NCM811 battery is boosted by 22.4%, and the cycling stability of the symmetrical Li cell is expanded over 500 h. This provided strategy is conducive to the achievement of high-performance LMBs with Ni-rich materials by optimizing the electrolyte formula.

Garnet electrolyte-based solid-state lithium metal batteries (SLMBs) are attractive owing to their high energy density and high safety. However, garnet electrolytes are sensitive to humid air, forming Li2CO3-rich contaminants on the surface that trigger a high kinetic barrier and premature battery failure. Herein, a straightforward “waste-to-treasure” strategy is proposed to transform Li2CO3 on a Li6.4La3Zr1.4Ta0.6O12 (LLZTO) surface into LiF by solvent-free trifluoroacetic acid (TFA)-induced interfacial engineering. The as-formed LiF interfacial layer with electronically insulating nature effectively improves the interface wettability between the Li anode and LLZTO, reduces the interface resistance and produces a symmetric cell with an ultralong-lifespan of up to 10 000 h at 0.1 mA cm−2. Furthermore, the SLMB paired with the LiFePO4 cathode delivers a high capacity of 155.6 mA h g−1 at 0.5C and retains 78% of the initial capacity after 900 cycles. This study offers a facile strategy to overcome the limitations associated with surface impurities, addresses critical interface issues, and accelerates the practical application of garnet-type solid-state electrolytes in high-performance SLMBs.

Silicon-based materials are the desirable anodes for next-generation lithium-ion batteries; however, the large volume change of Si during the charging/discharging process causes electrode fracture and an unstable solid–electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer, which severely impair their stability and Coulombic efficiency. Herein, a bundle of silicon nanoparticles is encapsulated in robust micrometer-sized MXene frameworks, in which the MXene nanosheets are precrumpled by capillary compression force to effectively buffer the stress induced by the volume change, and the abundant covalent bonds (Ti–O–Ti) between adjacent nanosheets formed through a facile thermal self-cross-linking reaction further guarantee the robustness of the MXene architecture. Both factors stabilize the electrode structure. Moreover, the abundant fluorine terminations on MXene nanosheets contribute to an in situ formation of a highly compact, durable, and mechanically robust LiF-rich SEI layer outside the frameworks upon cycling, which not only shuts down the parasitic reaction between Si and an organic electrolyte but also enhances the structural stability of MXene frameworks. Benefiting from these merits, the as-prepared anodes deliver a high specific capacity of 1797 mA h g–1 at 0.2 A g–1 and a high capacity retention of 86.7% after 500 cycles at 2 A g–1 with an average Coulombic efficiency of 99.6%. Significantly, this work paves the way for other high-capacity electrode materials with a strong volume effect.

Lithium bis((trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl)azanide (LiTFSI) based electrolytes have become the preferred electrolytes for lithium metal batteries (LMBs) due to their exceptional anode stability and ionic conductivity. However, challenges including unstable cathode electrolyte interface (CEI) formation and aluminum current collector (AlCC) corrosion have hindered the application of LiTFSI-based electrolyte in high-voltage LMBs. In this work, a universal passivation strategy is proposed and achieved with additive 8-hydroxyquinoline (8-HQ) in LiTFSI based electrolyte (ED-HQ). The 8-HQ additive preferentially decomposes on the cathode surface to generate Li 3 N, inducing the formation of inorganic-rich CEI with a uniform thickness of only 10 nm. The dense and homogeneous inorganic-rich CEI enables the cycling stability of the cathode. Meanwhile, the 8-HQ additive shows strong adsorption on the AlCC surface, which promotes the formation of a composite passivation layer consisting of an Aluminum-8-hydroxyquinoline (Alq 3 ) chelate layer and an AlF 3 /LiF inorganic layer, increasing the stable operating voltage of AlCC to 4.9 V and reducing the corrosion current density to one tenth. As a result, the joint effects enable Li||LiFePO 4 cells with ED-HQ electrolyte to achieve 89.8% capacity retention after 500 cycles at an elevated cutoff voltage of 4.5 V, demonstrating a viable pathway toward stable high-voltage LMB operation.

All-solid-state lithium metal batteries (ASSLMBs) are considered the most competitive next-generation energy storage batteries due to their high energy density and high safety. Polyethylene oxide (PEO) is an ideal solid-state electrolyte due to its high chain flexibility, high dielectric constant, and strong dissociation ability towards lithium salts. However, the application of PEO is severely hindered by drawbacks such as low ion conductivity at room temperature and low electrochemical window. In this work, we constructed a Li1.25Al0.25Zr1.75(PO4)3 (LAZP)/PEO composite solid-state electrolyte (CSSE) with improved ion conductivity, enlarged electrochemical window, and stable charge–discharge cycle performance. The CSSE leads to an obvious LiF layer and Li2CO3 formation at the interface of lithium metal. Meanwhile, the addition of LAZP reduces the side reaction between PEO and the lithium metal significantly and suppresses the deterioration of ion conductivity. In addition, we modified LiFePO4 (M-LFP), the cathode sheet of the ASSLMBs, by adding an appropriate proportion of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), PEO and lithium bis(trifluoromethane sulfonimide) (LiTFSI) to improve the ionic and electronic conductivity inside the cathode of the ASSLMBs. The Li/CSSE/M-LFP full cell exhibits a specific discharge capacity of 152 mA h g−1 at 60 °C and 2 C rate and a capacity retention rate of 93.5% after 200 cycles at 1 C. This work demonstrates an effective strategy for increasing the specific capacity, rate ability and long-cycle performance of ASSLMBs.
