Study of the Corrosion Behavior of Cathode Current Collector in LiFSI Electrolyte

Zijie Yuan,Yongjing Wang,Yaqi Chen,Xiaodong Zhu,Shizhao Xiong,Zhongxiao Song

Graphical Corrosion of aluminum current collector is critical to the aging of lithium-ion batteries, particularly with lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide based electrolyte. Our results show that corrosion currents in aluminum increase with cycling time and potential, correlating with changes in surface chemistry and morphology. Our findings provide valuable insights for advancing the development of lithium-ion batteries with long lifespan. Cycling aging is the one of the main reasons affecting the lifetime of lithium-ion batteries and the contribution of aluminum current collector corrosion to the ageing is not fully recognized. In general, aluminum is corrosion resistant to electrolyte since a non-permeable surface film of alumina is naturally formed. However, corrosion of aluminum current collector can still occur under certain conditions such as lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (LiFSI)-based electrolyte or high voltage. Herein, we investigates the corrosion of aluminum current collector in the electrolyte of 1.2 M LiFSI in ethylene carbonate (EC) and ethyl methyl carbonate (EMC) mixed solvents. The electrochemical results shows that the corrosion current of aluminum is enhanced by cycling time and potential, which is correlated with the surface species and morphology. The formation of AlF 3 , which is induced by deep penetration of F − anions through surface passivation film, leads to internal volume change and the surface crack in the end. Our work will be inspiring for future development of high-energy-density and high-power-density lithium-ion batteries in which the LiFSI salt will be intensively used.

Aluminum Corrosion Chemistry in High-Voltage Lithium Metal Batteries with LiFSI-Based Ether Electrolytes

Yawei Chen,Fanyang Huang,Miao Xie,Yehu Han,Wanxia Li,Yulin Jie,Xingbao Zhu,Tao Cheng,Ruiguo Cao,Shuhong Jiao

High-voltage Li metal batteries (LMBs) based on ether electrolytes hold potential for achieving high energy densities exceeding 500 Wh kg–1, but face challenges with electrolyte oxidative stability, particularly concerning aluminum (Al) current collector corrosion. However, the specific chemistry behind Al corrosion and its effect on electrolyte components remains unexplored. Here, our study delves into Al corrosion in the representative LiFSI-DME electrolyte system, revealing that low-concentration electrolytes exacerbate Al current collector corrosion and solvent decomposition. In contrast, high-concentration electrolytes mitigate these issues, enhancing long-term stability. Remarkably, LiFSI-0.7DME electrolyte demonstrates exceptional stability with up to 1000 cycles at high voltage without significant capacity decay. These findings offer crucial insights into Al corrosion mechanisms in ether-based electrolytes, advancing our comprehension of high-voltage LMBs and facilitating their development for practical applications.

Efficient synthesis of LiFSI based on Reaction-Extraction coupling method

Shouquan Zhou,Yan Liu,Fengjiao Ren,Siyu Zhang,Xueying Shi,Bin Wu,Longfei Yan,Jingjing Chen,Fuweng Zhang

Lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (LiFSI) is a promising electrolyte for lithium-ion batteries. However, the lithiation reaction during the LiFSI synthesis process is accompanied by a LiFSI hydrolysis reaction, which negatively affects the LiFSI yield and poses potential safety risks. In this study, we delve into the reaction equilibrium and hydrolysis behavior during the lithiation reaction and identify that the high temperature and strong alkali used in the reactive distillation process are the key factors leading to LiFSI hydrolysis. As a solution, a novel method for effectively synthesizing LiFSI using reaction-extraction coupling method is proposed and rigorously tested for various factors, including temperature, alkali equivalent, type of solvent, and dosage. The research culminated in developing a multistage continuous membrane extraction process, which achieves a remarkable conversion of over 99.7% and minimizes LiFSI hydrolysis to less than 0.05%.

Improved fast-charging performances of phosphorus electrodes using the intrinsically flame-retardant LiFSI based electrolyte

Xinpeng Han,Jie Sun

Red phosphorus (RP) has recently gained great attention for high-energy-density fast-charging lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to its high theoretical specific capacity (2596 mA h g −1 ) and safe lithiation voltage (ca. 0.7 V vs. Li + /Li). Here, we adopt a new electrolyte system, the thermally stable lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (LiFSI) in the mixed solvents of intrinsically flame-retardant triethyl phosphate (TEP) and fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) as a solid electrolyte interface (SEI)-forming additive, resulting in an enhanced electrochemical performance for the application of P anode. LiFSI avoids the side effect of fluorination that is prone to occur at the surface of P particles in commonly used lithium hexafluorophosphate (LiPF 6 )-based electrolyte. As a result, combining the ternary synergy of LiFSI, TEP and FEC, a favorable and stable lithium fluoride (LiF) and non-Li x PF y based SEI is constructed on the RP anode through the preferential reduction of the Li + solvation structure, and subsequent reduction deposition of FSI − anion and FEC solvent. This stable SEI plays a critical role in alleviating the huge volumetric expansion of P, decreasing the reactivity of P anode within electrolyte during cycling process and thus enhancing the fast-charging performance of P anode.

Sulfur–Carbon Electrode with PEO-LiFSI-PVDF Composite Coating for High-Rate and Long-Life Lithium–Sulfur Batteries

Ling Li,Jong Seok Nam,Min Soo Kim,Yifan Wang,Shaohua Jiang,Haoqing Hou,Il-Doo Kim

To address the problem of the serious capacity fading in lithium–sulfur batteries, a multi-functional PEO(polyethylene oxide)/LiFSI (lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide)/PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) (PLP) gel polymer electrolyte is exploited by coating PLP on a carbon nanotubes (CNTs) based sulfur cathode (PLP-S/CNTs) with a controlled thermal annealing process. The annealing process leads to the conformal infusion of PLP through the matrix of S/CNTs with retaining the amorphous phase of the PLP, which enhance the rate performance compared to the bare S/CNTs. The PLP coating drives the transformation of more elemental sulfur to Li 2 S 2 /Li 2 S without forming intermediary product by restraining soluble-polysulfides formation. Furthermore, the PLP coating successfully inhibits the dissolution of Li 2 S x ( x > 4) in PEO and prevents the loss of active material in the cathode, which is confirmed by density functional theory calculations. Comprehensively, the PLP coating applied to the surface of the S/CNTs cathode exhibit significantly suppressed shuttle effect and greatly improve long-term cycle stability of the lithium–sulfur battery. The synthesized PLP-coated S/CNTs composite cathode demonstrates a high specific capacity of 573.6 mAh g −1 at a current density of 0.5 C after 1 000 cycles, even achieving 318.1 mAh g −1 at an extremely high C-rate (6 C). which is unprecedented performance among the reported studies on coating technology.

Solid polymer electrolytes based on the composite of PEO–LiFSI and organic ionic plastic crystal

Wanwan Wang,Zhiqiang Fang,Ming Zhao,Yan Peng,Jiujun Zhang,Shiyou Guan

In this work, composite membranes consisting of triethylmethylammonium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (N 1222 FSI), poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl) imide (LiFSI) have been produced as solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs). The composite SPEs provide good mechanical property, high ionic conductivity at 50 °C, high electrochemical and thermal stability as well as superior interfacial compatibility with lithium metal. Moreover, Li/LiFePO 4 cells containing the best-performing SPE exhibit high discharge capacity and excellent cycling performance. The results show that the novel composite SPEs might be promising electrolytes applied in all-solid-state lithium batteries.

Lithium Bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide for Stabilized Interphases on Conjugated Dicarboxylate Electrode

Hao Wu,Wenfang Feng,Michel Armand,Zhibin Zhou,Heng Zhang

Carbonyl-based negative electrodes have received considerable interest in the domain of rechargeable lithium batteries, owing to their superior feasibility in structural design, enhanced energy density, and good environmental sustainability. Among which, lithium terephthalate (LiTPA) has been intensively investigated as a negative electrode material in the past years, in light of its relatively stable discharge plateau at low potentials (ca. 1.0 V vs Li/Li+) and high specific capacity (ca. 290 mAh g–1). However, its cell performances are severely limited owing to the poor quality of the solid-electrolyte-interphase (SEI) layer generated therein. Here, we report the utilization of lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (LiFSI) as an electrolyte salt for forming a Li-ion permeable SEI layer on the LiTPA electrode and subsequently improving the cyclability and rate performance of the LiTPA-based cells. Our results show that, differing from the reference electrolyte containing the lithium hexafluorophosphate (LiPF6) salt, the electrochemical reductions of the FSI– anions occur prior to the lithiation processes of LiTPA electrode, which is capable of building an inorganic-rich SEI layer containing lithium fluoride (LiF) and lithium sulfate (Li2SO4). Consequently, the lithium metal (Li°)||LiTPA cell shows significantly improved cycling performance than the LiPF6-based reference cell. This work provides useful insight into the reductive processes of the FSI– anions on negative electrodes, which could spur the deployment of highly sustainable and high-energy rechargeable lithium batteries.

Double-salt electrolyte for Li-ion batteries operated at elevated temperatures

Long Chen,Jianhao Lu,Yibo Wang,Pan He,Shaobo Huang,Yan Liu,Yanzhou Wu,Gaoping Cao,Li Wang,Xiangming He,Jingyi Qiu,Hao Zhang

Lithium ion batteries (LIBs) have swept the whole energy storage field. However, the current mainstream lithium batteries are difficult to operate stably at high temperature (>60°C) due to the decomposition of electrolyte and solid electrolyte interphase (SEI), the cathode metal elements dissolution behavior, and potential thermal runaway. Here, We report a double-salt electrolyte with lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (LiFSI) and lithium difluoro(oxalato)borate (LiDFOB) as electrolyte salt, fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC), and tetra(ethylene glycol) dimethyl ether (TEGDME) as cosolvent, which delivers excellent ionic conductivity, high electrochemical stability and satisfactory ability to impede the dissolution of Fe element under elevated temperature (70°C). In addition, the electrolyte is benefited to form a robust and thermal-resistance solid-electrolyte interface (SEI) layer on the surface of graphite (Gr) anode, which shows improved decomposition temperature (86°C). The assembled thermally stable and high-safety 1300 mAh 18650-type LiFePO 4 |Gr cell shows high Coulombic efficiency (∼99.7%), improved cycling stability with discharge capacity 871.1 mAh after 200 cycles at 0.5 C and 70°C. This work affords a splendid strategy for address the unstable interface at both cathode and anode for safe high-temperature LIBs.

Molten salt of lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (LiFSI)-potassium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (KFSI) as electrolyte for the natural graphite/LiFePO4 lithium-ion cell

Fei Xu,Chengyong Liu,Wenfang Feng,Jin Nie,Hong Li,Xuejie Huang,Zhibin Zhou

The binary eutectic mixture of lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (LiFSI) and potassium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (KFSI) with a molar ratio of x LiFSI : x KFSI   =   0.41: 0.59 has been investigated as molten salt electrolyte for natural graphite/LiFePO 4 lithium-ion cells at 80   °C. The electrochemical performances of the Li/natural graphite, Li/LiFePO 4 , and natural graphite/LiFePO 4 cells using this molten salt electrolyte have been evaluated, in terms of cycling performances and electrochemical impedance spectra (EIS) at 80   °C. Both the Li/natural graphite and Li/LiFePO 4 cells show good cycling performances. The initial specific capacities after conditioning for the natural graphite and LiFePO 4 electrodes are 353 and 150 mAh g −1 , respectively, and the corresponding capacity retention rates are 98% and 97%, respectively, after 100 cycles at 80   °C, except for a large irreversible capacity (162 mAh g −1 ) observed for the natural graphite at the first cycle for forming solid electrolyte interface (SEI) film. The natural graphite/LiFePO 4 lithium-ion cell using this molten salt electrolyte shows a low capacity in the range of 71–86 mAh g −1 , due to the large irreversible capacity (71 mAh g −1 ) at the first cycle, but it shows a good cycleability after the first cycle, and provides a specific capacity of 71 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles at 80   °C. The variations of cycling performances of these cells can be well correlated with their impedance evolution with cycling.

Fluorinated electrolyte formulations design enabling high-voltage and long-life lithium metal batteries

Yuxin Rao,Xue Li,Shangquan Zhao,Pengfei Liu,Fanglin Wu,Xiang Liu,Naigen Zhou,Shan Fang,Stefano Passerini

The poor compatibility of carbonate-based electrolytes with lithium metal anodes results in unstable solid electrolyte interphase, leading to lithium dendrite formation, low Coulombic efficiency, and short cycle life. To address this issue, we propose a novel fluorinated electrolyte that leverages lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (LiFSI), along with fluorinated solvents. An extremely low concentration of lithium nitrate exerts a substantial impact on the Li ion solvation structure, inducing an anions-rich solvation structure, results in an inorganic-rich electrolyte interphase layer mainly composed of Li 3 N and LiF, which effectively inhibits lithium dendrite formation, enhances the interfacial stability between the electrode and electrolyte, and yields excellent cycling performance in lithium metal batteries. When coupled with a high nickel content cathode (LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 ), the cells exhibit impressive cycling performance with 1000 cycles at 4 C, retaining 68.6 % capacity (with charge times under 15 min). Despite the relatively low oxidation stability of Dimethoxyethane in the electrolyte, the cell demonstrates exceptional high-voltage electrochemical performance, even up to 4.5 V, the cells do not show extensive electrolyte decomposition and structural changes, preserving 79.2 % capacity retention after 300 cycles. Using 50 µm lithium foil in the cells, remarkable capacity retention of 89.5 % is achieved after 400 cycles at 1 C. This remarkable compatibility between the anode and cathode represents a significant breakthrough in enhancing the reliability and performance of lithium metal batteries.
