Wenliang Sun,Rusi Hao

Herein, porous activated carbon was synthesized from highland barley straw by phosphoric acid activation and used as a conductive agent for LiFePO 4 cathodes. The morphology and microstructure are characterized by scanning electron microscopy and nitrogen adsorption and desorption. The results show that the porous activated carbon convenient three-dimensional porous microstructure. Compared with the conventional conductive agent carbon black Super P, the obtained porous activated carbon presents a high capacity of 153.63 mA h g -1 at 0.1 C, as well as an excellent rate performance and cycling stability. The simple method for the preparation of porous activated carbon as a conductive agent with an excellent electrochemical performance opens up a new opportunity of LiFePO4 cathodes for widespread applications in lithium-ion batteries.

Direct regeneration of LiFePO4 cathode by inherent impurities in spent lithium-ion batteries

Meiting Huang,Zhihao Wang,Haitao Yang,Liming Yang,Kechun Chen,Haoxuan Yu,Chenxi Xu,Yingying Guo,Penghui Shao,Liang Chen,Xubiao Luo

The direct regeneration method, recognized for its cost-effectiveness, has garnered considerable attentions in the field of battery recycling. In this study, a novel direct regeneration strategy is proposed to repair spent LiFePO 4 (S-LFP) cathodes without the need for impurity removal. Instead, the residual conductive carbon and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) in S-LFP are employed as inherent reductive agents. Systematic characterization and analysis reveal that the failure of S-LFP primarily originates from a substantial loss of Li + and the conversion of LiFePO 4 to FePO 4 . Meanwhile, it is demonstrated that both residual conductive carbon and PVDF play positive roles in promoting the regeneration of S-LFP through distinct mechanisms. As a result, the regenerated LFP exhibits significant recovery in crystal structure and chemical composition as compared to S-LFP, which leads to notably improved lithium storage performance. Furthermore, to further enhance the lithium storage property, a specific amount of glucose (10 %) is introduced during the regeneration of S-LFP, yielding a regenerated product that performs comparably to commercial LFP. Clearly, our approach, in contrast to traditional regeneration methods, maximizes the utilization of residual impurities within S-LFP, resulting in effective regeneration of S-LFP, thereby proving both informative and cost-effective.

Water-soluble binder PAALi with terpene resin emulsion as tackifier for LiFePO4 cathode

Jiarong He,Haoxiang Zhong,Lingzhi Zhang

Terpene resin (TS) emulsion has been adopted as a tackifier in lithium polyacrylate (PAALi) as water-soluble binder for LiFePO 4 (LFP) cathode in Li-ion batteries. TS–PAALi composite binder with optimal ratio of 1:1 (denoted as TS1–PAALi1), shows improved flexibility and enhanced adhesion capability of 0.170 N/cm in comparison with 0.120 N/cm of PAALi after introducing TS as adhesion enhancing agent, which is comparable with that of nonaqueous poly(vinylidene difluoride) (PVDF, 0.171 N/cm) and much better than aqueous sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC, 0.045 N/cm). The electrochemical characteristics of LFP with TS1–PAALi1 have been investigated and further compared with those of PAALi, CMC, and PVDF. LFP with TS1–PAALi1 exhibits superior cycling stability and rate capability, maintaining 65.57% capacity of 0.2 C at 5 C rate in comparison with 60.73%, 57.83%, and 34.79% for PAALi, CMC, and PVDF, respectively. In addition, LFP with TS1–PAALi1 displays excellent cycling performance almost without any capacity fading at 60 °C after 45 cycles at 1 C, much better than that of PAALi, CMC, and PVDF. Cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy reveal that LFP with TS1–PAALi1 has a smaller redox potential difference, lower electrode polarization, and a more favorable electrochemical kinetics (fast lithium diffusion rate) than that of PAALi, CMC, and PVDF, thus more superior electrochemical performances. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Preparation of Micro–Nano-Structured FePO4·2H2O for LiFePO4 Cathode Materials by the Turbulent Flow Cycle Method

Xiang-lan Ming,Ruizi Wang,Teng Li,Xixi Wu,Liang-jie Yuan,Yu Zhao

The micro–nano-structured FePO4·2H2O was prepared from mixed solution of FeSO4 oxidized in diluted H3PO4 with H2O2 and NaOH solution in the turbulent flow cycle state at 90 °C. The resulting products were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Constant current charge/discharge tests were adopted to investigate the electrochemical performance and the rate capability (from 0.1C to 5C) of the carbon-coated LiFePO4 composite materials prepared from the micro–nano-structured FePO4. The carbon-coated LiFePO4 composite materials deliver a high specific discharge capacity of 153.7 mAh·g–1, exhibit excellent cycle performance with 98.6% of the capacity retained after 30 cycles. This study demonstrates that the turbulent flow cycle method may be an economical and effective method for industrial production of fine and uniform micro–nano-structured FePO4·2H2O particles for LiFePO4 cathode materials for Li-ion batteries.

Porous-structured FeS2@C nanoparticles prepared from spent LiFePO4 cathodes with excellent rate performance for potassium-ion batteries

Menghang Sun,Xinyu Zhou,Lili Li,Bo Wen,Yunzi Miao,Xiaofeng Liu,Wei Yan,Guorui Yang,Shujiang Ding

Recycling spent cathode materials is crucial for sustainably developing lithium-ion battery technology. To achieve the high-value utilization of spent LiFePO 4 (LFP) cathodes, this paper proposes a method for preparing MIL-100(Fe) based on solid waste residues from spent LFP cathodes. R-FeS 2 @C derived from MIL-100(Fe) can serve as an anode material for potassium-ion batteries featuring a porous structure. Electrochemical tests demonstrate that the R-FeS 2 @C exhibits more stable cycling performance compared with the FeS 2 @C derived from the traditional MIL-100(Fe), reaching 525 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles at a current density of 100 mA g −1 . Impressively, R-FeS 2 @C also showcases excellent rate performance (343 mAh g −1 specific capacity at 5 A g −1 ). Furthermore, full cells assembled with PI@rGO cathodes also exhibit excellent rate performance and stable cycling performance. The porous structure of R-FeS 2 @C provides numerous voids to accommodate volume changes and introduces sufficient channels for electrolyte penetration. The higher carbon content enhances the electrical conductivity improving the kinetics of the K + migration reaction. These researches can provide guidance for the recycling of spent lithium-ion batteries and the design of sulfide electrodes for PIBs.

Ti3C2Tx MXene enhanced high-performance LiFePO4 cathode for all-solid-state lithium battery

Hao Xu,Shuai Liu,Zhiang Li,Fan Ding,Weimin Wang,Kaikai Song,Ting Liu,Lina Hu

All-solid-state lithium batteries (ASSLBs) are important for enhancing safety across various applications related to lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO 4 ) is a widely utilized commercial cathode in LIBs, prized for its stable cycling performance, thermal stability, and low cost. However, low electronic conductivity and slow ion diffusion kinetics limit its application at high rates and low temperatures. Herein, Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene nanosheets (NSs) are introduced into the LiFePO 4 cathode. The continuous electron-conducting networks are constructed due to the high electrical conductivity of Ti 3 C 2 T x NSs. Meanwhile, the coordination environment of lithium ions in the cathode is weakened by the oxygenated end groups of Ti 3 C 2 T x NSs, and thus efficient ion-percolating networks are constructed. Therefore, the ionic and electronic conductivities of the modified cathode are significantly improved. Assembled all-solid-state LiFePO 4 /Li full cells with poly(ethylene oxide) as electrolyte exhibits high initial discharged capacities of 91.5 mAh g −1 at 10 C, and capacities of 155.1 mAh g −1 after 1000 cycles at 1 C with a retention rate of 93.8%. Furthermore, the cells still deliver excellent performance at high loading, room temperature, and low temperature. This work offers a facile and scalable strategy for designing high-performance ASSLBs.

Efficient regeneration of waste LiFePO4 cathode material by short process low temperature plasma assisted nitrogen doped technology

Dongyu Hou,Jian Chen,Fengning Bai,Fanming Meng,Peng Dong,Chengxu Zhang,Yingjie Zhang,Jue Hu

Recently, the increase in lithium-ion batteries has led to a significant rise in battery scrapping, raising concerns of environmental pollution and resource waste. Therefore, regenerating these discarded lithium-ion batteries has become urgent. In this work, we propose a cost-effective and efficient LiFePO 4 cathode material regeneration technology with nitrogen-doping capabilities. Through plasma discharge, high-energy particles interact with the material's surface, initiating reactions that promote nitrogen-doping. Additionally, the reduction of Fe 3+ impurities to Fe 2+ enhances Li + embedding, thereby inhibiting Fe/Li inversion and achieving structural repair in the process. The regenerated LiFePO 4 , used as the cathode material, exhibits high capacity and cycle performance. It achieves a discharge capacity of 160.2 mA h g −1 at 0.1C and maintains about 146 mA h g −1 at 1C over 200 cycles without significant degradation. Furthermore, the regeneration time is nearly five times shorter than traditional methods. This method's low cost and short processing time provide crucial support for the recycling of waste cathode materials.

Direct synthesis of a lithium carboxymethyl cellulose binder using wood dissolving pulp for high-performance LiFePO4 cathodes in lithium-ion batteries

Jingxin Li,Ailin Wang,Weihao Xiang,Shiwei Liu,Lu Li,Qiong Wu,Yue Liu,Yuxiang Liu,Genkuo Nie,Shuangxi Nie,Shuangquan Yao,Hailong Yu

Lithium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC-Li) is a promising novel water-based binder for lithium-ion batteries. The direct synthesis of CMC-Li was innovatively developed using abundant wood dissolving pulp materials from hardwood (HW) and softwood (SW). The resulting CMC-Li-HW and CMC-Li-SW binders possessed a suitable degree of substitutions and excellent molecular weight distributions with an appropriate quantity of long- and short-chain celluloses, which facilitated the construction of a reinforced concrete-like bonding system. When used as cathode binders in LiFePO 4 batteries, they uniformly coated and dispersed the electrode materials, formed a compact and stable conductive network with high mechanical strength and showed sufficient lithium replenishment. The prepared LiFePO 4 batteries exhibited good mechanical stability, low charge transfer impedance, high initial discharge capacity (∼180 mAh/g), high initial Coulombic efficiency (99 %), excellent cycling performance (<3% loss over 200 cycles) and good rate capability, thereby outperforming CMC-Na and the widely used cathode binder polyvinylidene fluoride.

Total Component Recovery of Spent LiFePO4 Cathode Powder: A Leaching-Adsorption Process

Jintao Jia,Longping Deng,Huajian Shentu,Mengmeng Wang,Ya-Jun Cheng,Xiuxia Zuo,Jie Gao,Yonggao Xia

In recent years, the large consumption of lithium-ion batteries (LiBs) has caused resource waste and environmental pollution. It is crucial to recycle and reuse LiBs, especially the valuable elements from the spent LiBs. In this research, a new, sustainable, and easy-to-implement process for the recycling of spent LiFePO4 cathode powder is proposed. 732 cation exchange resin is used as a leaching agent and an adsorbent to leach and adsorb Li and Fe from the spent LiFePO4 powder. The effects of various parameters, such as the cathode scrap-to-resin ratio (1/9), time (35 min), water addition (30 mL), and reaction temperature (30 °C), on the resin leaching and adsorption of the waste LiFePO4 cathode powder have been investigated. The effect of acid concentration on the elution rate during resin elution and experiments on the recyclability of the resin has been carried out as well. The results indicate that it is technically and economically feasible and environmentally friendly to use the 732 cation exchange resin to recover the waste LiFePO4 cathode powder. Products including high-purity Li2CO3 (99.95%), Fe2O3, and high-purity phosphoric acid can be obtained based on this process, through which a full component recovery with a high recovery rate was achieved. We investigated the reaction of kinetic analysis and also explored the effect of reaction conditions on the reaction. In contrast to previous studies on spent LiFePO4 cathode powder, our approach is promising and is analyzed as follows: (1) the 732 cation exchange resin has a dual role in the recycling process of used LiFePO4 cathode powder (leaching-adsorption) in the used LiFePO4 cathode powder recycling process. (2) The separation of the valued metals and the phosphoric acid can be achieved in one step using the 732 cation exchange resin.

Investigation on Carboxymethyl Chitosan as New Water Soluble Binder for LiFePO4 Cathode in Li-Ion Batteries

Minghao Sun,Haoxiang Zhong,Shuren Jiao,Hanqi Shao,Lingzhi Zhang

Carboxymethyl chitosan (C-CTS) was firstly reported as a water soluble binder for LiFePO 4 cathode in Li-ion batteries. The electrochemical performances of LiFePO 4 cathode with C-CTS binder was investigated and compared with the conventional water-soluble sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and the commercial non-aqueous polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF). LiFePO 4 cathode with C-CTS exhibited a comparable cycling performance, but better rate capability than that of CMC and PVDF, retaining 65% capacity of C/5 at 5   C rate as compared with 55.9% and 39.4% for CMC and PVDF, respectively. In addition, LiFePO 4 cathode with C-CTS exhibited excellent cycling performance at 60   °C, retaining 91.8%/62.1% capacity after 80 cycles at 1   C/10   C, respectively.

Two-dimensional Fe2O3/TiO2 Composite Nanoplates with Improved Lithium Storage Properties as Anodic Materials for Lithium-Ion Full Cells

Dongyang Qu,Zhonghui Sun,Shiyu Gan,Lifang Gao,Zhongqian Song,Huijun Kong,Jianan Xu,Xiandui Dong,Li Niu

Graphical The 2D structured Fe 2 O 3 /TiO 2 composite nanoplates offers open channels for favorable ion and electron transports. The combination of TiO 2 with a steady structure further provides sufficient volume fluctuation space for Fe 2 O 3 . Fe 2 O 3 /TiO 2 nanoplates as an anode material thus exhibit favorable rate and cycle performances for lithium-ion batteries compared with Fe 2 O 3 . After assembled with LiFePO 4 cathode, the full cell also demonstrates stable cycle capacity (132 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 after 150 cycles). The rapid capacity decay is one of the challenges for the anodes of metal oxides-based lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Herein, we report a characteristic nanoplate-structured metal oxide anode consisting of hexagonal Fe 2 O 3 and TiO 2 (denoted as Fe 2 O 3 /TiO 2 ) via a facile hydrothermal strategy. Owing to two-dimensional (2D) structured and stable TiO 2 modifier, Fe 2 O 3 /TiO 2 composite demonstrates significantly improved electrochemical LIBs performances. The Fe 2 O 3 /TiO 2 composite material buffers the volume expansion of Fe 2 O 3 and improves the rate capability and cycling performances. Upon 1000 long-term cycles, the anode electrode delivers high discharge capacity of 1056 mAh g −1 at 0.5 A g −1 . The full cell that is composed of Fe 2 O 3 /TiO 2 as the anode and commercial LiFePO 4 as the cathode delivers superior rate capacity (84 mAh g −1 at 2 A g −1 ) and stable cycle capacity (132 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 after 150 cycles). This 2D composite nanostructure offers an approach to improve the metal oxide-based anodes of LIBs.

Armoring lithium metal anode with soft–rigid gradient interphase toward high-capacity and long-life all-solid-state battery

Rui Zhang,Biao Chen,Yuhan Ma,Yue Li,Junwei Sha,Liying Ma,Chunsheng Shi,Naiqin Zhao

Solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) are highly promising for realizing high-capacity, low-cost, and safe Li metal batteries. However, the Li dendritic growth and side reactions between Li and SPEs also plague these systems. Herein, a fluorinated lithium salt coating (FC) with organic-inorganic gradient and soft–rigid feature is introduced on Li surface as an artificial protective layer by the in-situ reaction between Li metal and fluorinated carboxylic acid. The FC layer can improve the interface stability and wettability between Li and SPEs, assist the transport of Li ions, and guide Li nucleation, contributing to a dendrite-free Li deposition and long-lifespan Li metal batteries. The symmetric cell with FC-Li anodes exhibits a high areal capacity of 1 mAh cm −2 at 0.5 mA cm −2 , and an ultra-long lifespan of 2000 h at a current density of 0.1 mA cm −2 . Moreover, the full cell paired with the LiFePO 4 cathode exhibits improved cycling stability, remaining 83.7% capacity after 500 cycles at 1 C. When matching with the S cathode, the FC layer can prevent the shuttle effect, contributing to stable and high-capacity Li–S battery. This work provided a promising way for the construction of stable all-solid-state lithium metal batteries with prolonged lifespan.
