Scintillators play a vital role in high-energy physics, medical imaging, security inspection, etc. Here, we designed and prepared a highly efficient scintillator of Ce,Tb-codoped LiLuF 4 , which was synthesized by a hydrothermal method using low-cost raw materials. The microcrystalline scintillator exhibits the strong luminescence of rare earth ion, which has a characteristic green fluorescence emission with a quantum yield of 71.59%. This material has a strong X-ray response, superior light output (16,509 ph/MeV), excellent ray cut-off capability and absolute stability. Based on micron-level powdered compounds, we used direct coating to manufacture a scintillation film with a size of 5.5 cm × 8.0 cm for X-ray imaging testing. The imaging test shows that the highly stable scintillation film not only has a spatial resolution capability of more than 10.0 LP/mm but also has great potential to be prepared as a flexible scintillator, which exhibited excellent performance as an potential scintillation detection material.

Radiographic screens are widely used in high energy physics, national defense, aviation, radiodynamic therapy and medical imaging due to their scintillation materials that can transform high-energy particles or rays into ultraviolet (UV) visible light or other signals. In recent years, lanthanide doped fluoride nanocrystals (NCs) have attracted much attention due to their excellent optical properties and stability. In this work, multiple lanthanide-doped LiLuF4 nanocrystal scintillation materials were synthesized by thermal decomposition. Among them, Tb-doped LiLuF4 nanocrystals have high X-ray sensitivity and low detection limit (36.31 nGy s−1), which is much lower than the requirement of medical imaging dose rate. After the irradiation of 42.29 mGy s−1 X-ray for 1 hour, the intensity of radioluminescence basically remained unchanged. Based on the good properties of our nanocrystals, we further prepared the flexible film of nanocomposites with epoxy resin. This kind of uniform, large area, high loaded flexible film exhibits excellent performance in X-ray imaging with a spatial resolution greater than 20 line pairs per millimeter (LP/mm).

Scintillators with high light yield, spatial resolution, and detection sensitivity are desirable for X-ray imaging. Howerer, it remains challenging to improve the light yield and radiation detection capability of alkali metal rare-earth fluoride (ALnF 4 ). Herein, a type of Cu 2+ ion heterovalent co-doped LiLuF 4 :Tb,Cu microcrystalline scintillation material with high light yield, persistent, and thermostimulated luminescence is obtained by defect engineering. The heterovalent codoping strategy not only increases the radioluminescence (RL) intensity, but also introduces more carrier traps in the material to enhance the long-afterglow and thermoluminescence intensity of LiLuF 4 :Tb microcrystals. After doping of 3 mol% Cu 2+ ions, the RL efficiency is increased by 88.61%, and the X-ray detection limit of LiLuF 4 :Tb,Cu reaches 2.7928 nGy·s ‒1 . This detectivity is considerably lower than the medical imaging requirements (5.5 µGy·s ‒1 ). Furthermore, a large-area flexible scintillation film of dimensions 30 × 30 cm 2 is prepared to achieve high spatial resolution X-ray imaging of 22 LP mm −1 @MTF(modulation transfer function) = 0.2. Besides, this flexible film enables X-ray imaging of curved objects and stores optical information for >48 h. This work provides a paradigm for improving the RL intensity and X-ray detection sensitivity of alkali rare-earth fluorides by crystal defect engineering, and enriches X-ray high resolution extended imaging applications.

X-ray detectors based on scintillators are widely used in the fields of medical imaging, high-energy physics, geological exploration, and industrial detection. The development of scintillation materials with different characteristics has become the focus of considerable research interest. Herein, we report a facile hydrothermal synthesis of Gd- and Eu-codoped LiLuF4 microcrystals (MCs), which exhibit strong luminescence of Eu3+ ion characteristic emission, characterized by distinct red fluorescence emission. The research shows that Gd3+ co-doping effectively improved the sensitivity and light yield of LiLuF4:Eu MCs by regulating the proportion of co-doping ions. In addition, the detection limit is 140.72 nGy s−1 for LiLuF4:Eu,Gd MCs, approximately 39 times lower than the dose requirement of medical diagnosis. Based on LiLuF4:Eu,Gd MCs with the superior scintillation properties, a MC-composited film with 250 μm thickness was prepared by a direct coating method. The uniform and high-loading scintillation film exhibits outstanding imaging performance with a high spatial resolution of 14.8 LP mm−1, which confirms the application potential of X-ray imaging.

Multimodal imaging can compensate for the deficiencies and incorporate the advantages of individual imaging modalities . In this paper, we demonstrated the synthesis of core–shell nanocomposites LiLuF 4 @LiGdF 4 :Yb,Er/Tm constituted of tetragonal LiLuF 4 nanoparticles as core and Yb,Er/Tm-codoped LiGdF 4 as shell. LiLuF 4 @LiGdF 4 :Yb,Er/Tm nanoparticles display brighter upconversion luminescence (UCL) than NaGdF 4 :Yb,Er/Tm nanoparticles with the same size under continuous-wave excitation at 980 nm. The active shell layer of LiGdF 4 :Yb,Er/Tm not only provide the UCL center, but also serve as magnetic resonance (MR) imaging contrast agent. To further improve the UCL intensity, the inert LiGdF 4 shell was coated on the LiLuF 4 @LiGdF 4 :Yb,Er/Tm nanoparticles. Furthermore, LiLuF 4 @LiGdF 4 :Yb,Tm@LiGdF 4 nanoparticles have been successfully applied to UCL/X-ray computed tomography (CT)/MR tri-modal imaging on the modal of tumor-bearing mice.

Nd3+ ions are commonly employed as sensitizers in lanthanide luminescent nanoprobes. However, the cross-relaxation effect typically limits their doping concentration to less than 5%. To address this limitation, we synthesized and manipulated LiLuF4:Yb,Nd nanoparticles through a rational design of the host lattice and optimization of the doping concentration, achieving up to a 50% doped Nd3+ concentration. The nanoparticles’ morphology, energy transfer mechanisms, and luminescent properties revealed robust near-infrared luminescence and successful imaging of mouse blood vessels. Furthermore, the inclusion of Lu in the nanoparticles enabled X-ray computed tomography imaging, enabling dual-modal imaging capabilities. This study presents a strategy for enhancing the performance of lanthanide luminescent nanoprobes and expanding their applications in multimodal imaging.

Biotin, as a key nutrition fortifier in infant formula, is of vital significance for guaranteeing the healthy growth of infants and young children. The accurate detection of biotin has therefore become a crucial priority for quality assurance in infant formula. However, the current bioassay techniques encounter a series of limitations such as cumbersome procedures and low sensitivity. Herein, we develop a sensitive time-resolved fluorescence resonance energy transfer (TR-FRET) nanoprobe by employing LiLuF 4 : Ce/Tb nanoparticles (NPs) as energy donors for biotin detection. By taking advantage of the distinctive millisecond-range photoluminescence of the NPs, the short-lived background autofluorescence can be completely eliminated, which enables the sensitive detection of biotin in infant formula within a range of 0−6104 pM and a detection limit down to 0.84 pM (0.21 pg mL −1 ). This value indicates 2−4 orders of magnitude improvement over conventional bioassay methods. The proposed TR-FRET biosensor is independent of expensive instruments and can be fully compatible with commercial microplate readers. Specifically, the homogeneous assay design enables rapid, user-friendly analysis, completing the entire detection process within 20 minutes. These findings offer new opportunities towards rapid and sensitive detection of biotin in infant nutrition products, thereby demonstrating the great potential of lanthanide nanoprobes in food safety monitoring applications.

X-ray nanoscintillator-based photoresponsive therapy is emerging as a promising strategy to treat in vivo tumors, necessitating the development of nanoscintillators with X-ray-excited luminescence in the ultraviolet region (UV-XEL) for the photoactivation of therapeutic precursors. However, it remains a challenge to achieve high-efficiency X-ray-activated tumor therapy due to the limited UV-XEL efficacy. Herein, we developed novel Gd 3+ /Ce 3+ -codoped LiLuF 4 nanoscintillators with strong UV-XEL for in vivo tumor therapy. Significantly, through optimization of host materials, dopants, and energy transfer process, the developed nanoscintillators enabled effective enhancement of UV-XEL (up to 18-fold) as compared with the traditional Ce 3+ -doped counterparts. As a proof-of-concept study to evaluate the in vivo therapeutic applications of the nanoscintillators, we integrated them with nitric oxide (NO) precursors for controllably generating NO upon the X-ray exposure, achieving superior in vivo antitumor effect upon X-ray-induced synergetic NO therapy and radiotherapy. Moreover, X-ray-activated NO therapy can inhibit tumor metastasis into liver to suppress tumor regrowth and prolong mice survival. This work might motivate future development of X-ray nanoscintillators for treating diseases in deep tissue.

Lanthanide ion (Ln3+)-codoped inorganic materials have been widely studied owing to their unique upconversion photoluminescence (UC PL) performance, which can be employed for promising applications in imaging, sensing, detection, and treatment. However, the forbidden transition of 4f inner shell and the nonradiative relaxation from the interaction of Ln3+ and a host lattice lead to low emission efficiency, limiting the industrial application. In this study, we report pressure-induced 1.2–2.6 times UC PL enhancement in the range of 10.0–25.0 GPa in Ln3+ (19%Yb3+/1%Er3+, 19%Yb3+/1%Ho3+, and 19.9%Yb3+/0.1%Tm3+)-codoped LiYF4 and LiLuF4. In situ X-ray diffraction pattern and Raman spectra indicated that both LiYF4 and LiLuF4 underwent structure transitions at a pressure around 10.0 GPa. Moreover, improved UC emissions were observed for the released sample in a completely amorphous state. The luminescence spectra of Eu3+-doped LiYF4 and LiLuF4 probes revealed that the phase transitions resulted in the reduction of Ln3+ site symmetry. Our research shows that pressure would be a powerful implement to design high-efficiency UC PL materials. Simultaneously, research on the “structure-luminescence” relationship can provide a deeper insight into the exploitation of potential UC PL materials and optimization of current luminescent materials.

LiLuF4 microcrystalline scintillation materials possess several advantages, including high chemical stability, simplified fabrication processes, and tunable emission wavelengths. These materials demonstrate significant potential in fields such as X-ray imaging, biodiagnostics, photodynamic therapy, advanced anti-counterfeiting, and thermally activated delayed imaging. However, the relatively weak radioluminescence intensity of single rare-earth-doped LiLuF4 crystals has constrained their practical applications. In this work, Ni2+ co-doped LiLuF4:Tb microcrystalline scintillators are synthesized via a hydrothermal method. The incorporation of heterovalent Ni2+ ions effectively enhanced both the radioluminescence and thermoluminescence intensities of LiLuF4 microcrystals. After doping with 3 mol% Ni2+ ions, the radioluminescence intensity increased by 125.34%. The X-ray detection limit of LiLuF4:Tb,Ni reaches 3.7966 nGy s−1, which is considerably lower than the medical imaging requirement of 5.5 μGy s−1. Furthermore, a large-area flexible composite scintillation film of dimensions 80 mm × 145 mm was prepared to achieve high-spatial-resolution X-ray imaging of 25 LP mm−1@20% MTF, indicating that heterovalent-doped fluoride scintillators possess exceptional application potential.
