Spinel LiMn2O4 cathode possesses open three-dimensional ion transport channels, high safety, and abundant resources, making it a promising candidate for high-power lithium-ion batteries. However, spinel LiMn2O4 inevitably faces serious challenges of manganese dissolution and irreversible phase transitions during the electrochemical process, leading to rapid capacity decay and limiting its rate performance. Herein, we report a simple two-step solid-state sintering method to realize Li+ and PO43– codoping synergy in spinel LiMn2O4. It is found that PO43– doping not only expands the lattice parameters of the material, enhancing its charge-transfer kinetics but also increases the relative content of active Mn3+, improving the specific capacity of spinel LiMn2O4. Meanwhile, Li+ doping effectively enhances the stability of the spinel structure, and the irreversible phase transition from cubic phase to tetragonal phase could be effectively suppressed in spinel LiMn2O4. Consequently, benefiting from the synergistic effect of Li+ and PO43– codoping, the optimally codoped spinel LiMn2O4 electrode delivers high specific discharge capacities of 116 and 102 mA h g–1 at 1 and 20C, respectively, and achieves 78.1% capacity retention after 1000 cycles at 5C. This strategy provides an effective modification approach to developing advanced electrode materials for lithium-ion batteries.

Based on a strategy of stabilizing the LiMn 2 O 4 (LMO) cathode interface, the high-temperature cycling and storage performance of 18 650-type LMO/graphite lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is effectively improved. The LMO cathode is prepared using lithium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMCLi)–polyacrylic acid/acrylate copolymer composite binder and nanoscale CaCO 3 functional component (marked as binder C). Compared with the traditional oily binder, the dissolution of Mn 2+ from LMO cathode into the electrolyte can effectively decrease, and the structure stability of LMO cathode can increase. The batteries exhibit retention capacity of 80.3% at 1 C after 600 cycles at room temperature and 76.7% at 1 C after 200 cycles at temperature of 45 °C. The high-temperature storage performance is also improved and there are 81.1% and 73.5% residual capacities when the fully charged batteries are stored in 60 °C for 14 and 28 days. The enhanced performance is mainly attributed to the interfacial stability of LMO cathode due to the bonding ability of composite binders and the elimination of HF by CaCO 3 . These results reveal the application prospect of as-developed aqueous binders and provide a way to improve the performance of LMO-based LIBs through stable interface strategy.

Aqueous Zn metal batteries are a promising candidate for low-cost, safe, and sustainable energy storage systems. Nonetheless, the practical application of such batteries is still impeded by the inferior Zn anode performance and instability of the cathode. Herein, we investigate the performance of an aqueous Zn‖LiMn2O4 (Zn‖LMO) hybrid battery with a bi-salt (ZnSO4 and Li2SO4) electrolyte modified with a low dosage of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG200) and MnSO4. The PEG additive effectively inhibits water decomposition, mitigates Zn metal corrosion, and promotes the in-plane growth of hexagonal Zn flakes. As a result, the reversibility of Zn plating/stripping and the long-term cyclability of the Zn‖LMO hybrid battery can be substantially enhanced in the modified electrolyte. Specifically, in our optimized electrolyte ZL-8% PEG-0.1 Mn, the Zn‖LMO hybrid battery exhibits an initial capacity of 91.2 mA h g−1 and a capacity retention of 50% in 500 cycles at 2C, along with improved coulombic efficiency and self-discharge behavior. This dual-additive strategy can be used to design low-cost, highly reversible, safe, and long-cycling Zn–Li hybrid-ion batteries for practical applications.

LiMn 2 O 4 is considered to be a promising cathode material for lithium-ion batteries due to its decent energy density, low price and environmental benignity. However, the problems of Mn dissolution, migration and deposition during the cycle, seriously affect its lifespan, especially at high temperature. In this study, we developed a strategy by which we killed two birds with one stone. A low molecular weight polyacrylic acid (PAA) mixed with sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) is applied as binder and coating agent for cathode particles at the same time. The conventional and environmental unfriendly polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF)-N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP) system is replaced by the cheap and green aqueous binder with improved adhesive effect. Furthermore, the binder-based surface coating layer not only alleviates the side reaction between the electrolyte and the cathode particles, but also chelates the dissolved Mn 2+ by the large amount of carboxyl groups in PAA molecules and so prevents the following migration and deposition of Mn 2+ . In the button half-cell with low molecular weight PAA based binder, the capacity retention reaches 94.1 % after 1000 cycles at room temperature and 92.0 % after 200 cycles at 60 degrees centigrade. Meanwhile, 18650-type cylindrical cells were prepared with this binder, which shows a great high temperature storage performance. After the cell was held at 60 degrees centigrade for 25 days at full charged state, the internal resistance increased by only 1.25mΩ, the voltage decreased by only 0.1 V, the residual capacity retention and recovery capacity retention reaches 85.6 % and 92.2 %. This work shows the great potential of the aqueous binder in dealing with the problem of Mn dissolution during the cycling of manganese-based cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries.

Aqueous rechargeable batteries (ARBs) are generally safer than non-aqueous analogues, they are also less-expensive, and more friendly to the environment. However, the inherent disadvantage of the narrow electrochemical window of H 2 O seriously restricts the energy density and output voltage of ARBs, especially aqueous rechargeable Fe-based batteries. Herein, we introduce a new battery system: the anode contains C@Fe/Fe 2 O 3 composite, which is interfaced with an alkaline electrolyte; the cathode contains LiMn 2 O 4 in contact with a neutral electrolyte. A Li + -conducting membrane is carefully selected to decouple the electrode-electrolyte, which effectively widens the electrochemical window to above 2.65 V, thereby enables an aqueous rechargeable iron battery. Its average output voltage is 1.83 V and its energy density is 235.3 Wh/kg at 549 W/kg. In this work, we propose the energy storage mechanism with the aid of density functional theory (DFT). The calculated reduction potential of the anode agrees with the experimental value. Furthermore, this battery system demonstrates long cycle lifespan of approximately 2500 cycles at 2 A/g, corresponding to a capacity retention of 82.1%. These results are very far superior than those of mainstream aqueous rechargeable Fe-based batteries, which guarantee future investigation for storing electricity energy.
