LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 Joins to Alleviate Self-Discharge of Anion-Graphite Intercalation Compounds

Suwanda Arachchige Don Rumesh Madhusanka,Jiaxing Qi,Nan Chen,Boyu Wang,Guobao Xu,Decheng Li,Hongyu Wang

A straightforward hybrid approach of a blend cathode is put forward to alleviate self-discharged anion-graphite intercalation compounds in dual-ion batteries. The self-discharge mechanism of the LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4/graphite blend cathode is investigated by conventional electrochemical tests and in situ X-ray diffraction measurements. A charging behavior between electrode materials during self-discharge has been discovered. This work will contribute to advancing the practical implementation of dual-ion batteries and provide valuable theoretical support for the research of blend electrodes.

Preparation of LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 cathode materials by using different-sized Mn3O4 nanocrystals as precursors

Chen Renhong,Mei Jie,Xu Jin,Xu Wanjie,Wang Laisen,Chen Yuanzhi,Peng Dong-Liang

High-voltage LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 with a spinel structure is considered as important cathode materials for high-energy density Li-ion batteries (LIBs). In this study, we investigate the size, structure, and the electrochemical performance of LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 electrodes prepared by using two different-sized Mn 3 O 4 nanocrystal precursors under different calcination conditions. As the calcination temperature rises, the particle sizes of the acquired LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 cathode materials can vary from ~ 100 nm to ~ 1 µm, and the morphology changes from nano round shape to truncated octahedral shape. The content of Mn 3+ is closely related to the calcination temperature and is affected by the size of Mn precursor. It is found that the LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 sample prepared by using 50-nm-sized Mn 3 O 4 nanocrystals under a calcination temperature of 800 C exhibits good cycling performance with a capacity retention ratio of 96.1% at 1 C after 200 cycles, while the LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 sample prepared by using 7-nm-sized Mn 3 O 4 nanocrystals under a calcination temperature of 800 °C shows an excellent rate performance with a capacity retention ratio of 98% after 500 cycles at 10 C. The results show that the size of Mn 3 O 4 precursor is an important parameter that governs the final size and electrochemical performances of LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 cathode materials.

Improved rate performance of LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 cathode for lithium ion battery by carbon coating

Xue Liang,Liao Youhao,Yang Liang,Li Xiaoping,Li Weishan

Carbon-coated LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 cathode was prepared using phenolic resin as a carbon precursor. The morphology and structure of the prepared samples were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and thermogravimetry, and its performance as cathode of lithium ion battery was investigated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and charge-discharge test. The results showed that the carbon coating with phenolic resin as precursor could obviously promote the discharge capacity of LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 cathode, especially at high rate. At 20 C rate, the discharge capacity is 41 mAh∙g -1 for uncoated LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 , while 108 mAh∙g -1 for carbon-coated LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 . The coated sample also exhibited excellent cyclic performance, remaining 95 % of its initial discharge capacity (131 mAh∙g -1 ) at 1 C rate after 100 cycles. The interfacial resistance of LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 with carbon coating was reduced from 90 to 31 Ω.

Enhanced performance of the electrolytes based on sulfolane and lithium difluoro(oxalate)borate with enhanced interfacial stability for LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 cathode

Hongming Zhou,Demin Xiao,Chengjie Yin,Zhaohui Yang,Kaiwen Xiao,Jian Li

The electrolytes based on lithium difluoro(oxalate)borate (LiODFB) and sulfolane (SL) including LiODFB-ethylene carbonate (EC)/dimethyl carbonate (DMC) and LiPF 6 -EC/DMC as the references have been studied on electrochemical performance and interfacial stability in Li/LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 cells. LiODFB-containing electrolytes show outstanding electrochemical stability within 5.5   V due to the passivation phenomenon on the cathodes, while LiPF 6 -containing electrolytes undergo continuous decomposition beyond 4.5   V. The initial charge/discharge profiles and cyclic voltammetry (CV) curves prove that the cell with LiODFB-SL/DMC(2:1 by vol.) electrolyte has lower degree of polarization and better reversibility. The cathode with LiODFB-SL/DMC(2:1 by vol.) electrolyte displays the best cycling performance and the cathode with LiPF 6 -EC/DMC(1:1 by vol.) electrolyte displays the worst cycling performance. AC impedance shows that the cell cycling with LiODFB-SL/DMC(2:1 by vol.) electrolyte has much smaller resistance of charge transfer on cathode/electrolyte interface than the cell cycling with LiODFB-EC/DMC(1:1 by vol.) electrolyte. The characterization of the cathode surfaces indicates that a more homogeneous and compact passivation layer forms on the cathode cycling with LiODFB-SL/DMC(2:1 by vol.) electrolyte to greatly improve the interfacial stability for the reason that SL motivates the passivation reaction of LiODFB and itself participates the formation of the passivation layers. Therefore, LiODFB-SL/DMC(2:1 by vol.) is a promising electrolyte for LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 cathode.

Both Interface and Bulk Stable LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 Cathodes for High-Energy Li-Ion Batteries

Hanwu Luo,Haipeng Shi,Yang Cao,Yuting Yin,Yi-Hu Feng,Xin-Yu Fan,Peng-Fei Wang,Xiaogang Han

Delivery of a high operating voltage with stable cycling behavior is a challenge in developing cathodes for high-energy Li-ion batteries (LIBs). The representative spinel LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 materials own a high discharge voltage of 4.7 V (versus Li+/Li) and a large theoretical specific capacity of 147 mA h g–1. However, they usually suffer from undesired transition metal dissolution and intensive cathode–electrolyte interfacial side reactions during high-voltage cycling, incurring unacceptable capacity decay and short cycle life. To solve these problems, we present a radially aligned hierarchical structure with different chemical compositions from the bulk (LiNi0.4Cr0.1Mn1.5O4) to the surface (LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4) of the structure. The introduction of Cr3+ to the inner end suppresses the Jahn–Teller active Mn3+ and partial Mn2+ dissolution, thus improving the bulk stability. The construction of the undoped shell avoids and eliminates the catalytic effect of the dopant on interfacial side reactions, thus enhancing the interfacial stability. As a consequence, the designed LNMO@iCr–LNMO (6 wt % coating) compound achieves capacity retentions of 95.2% at 1C after 500 cycles and 93.6% at 2C after 1000 cycles. This work highlights the significance of bulk and interface chemistry in high-energy cathode materials for LIBs.

Electrochemical Property Enhancement of LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 Cathodes at High Temperatures Using 1,1,3,3-Tetramethyldisiloxane

Tao Huang,Ying Pan,Chunfeng Yan,Maoxiang Wu

In this work, we propose that 1,1,3,3-tetramethyldisiloxane (TMDS) is beneficial for electrochemical property enhancement of LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4/Li cells at high temperatures. The LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4/Li cells with 1 vol % TMDS revealed capacity retention of 81.2% after a cycling test at 55 °C, while the cells without additive showed capacity retention of only 32.3%. The cells with 1 vol % TMDS also presented a better rate performance, reaching 100 mAh g–1 under 3C. Physical characterization and theoretical calculations revealed that TMDS formed a thinner and better conductive layer on the LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 surface and effectively scavenged HF/F– from the electrolyte, contributing to high stabilization of LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4.

A Nonflammable Electrolyte Combining Phosphate and Fluorinated Ether for Li4Ti5O12/LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 Cells

Zheng Hao,Fang Wei,Sun Yi,Liang Xin,Xiang Hongfa,Jiang Lihua,Wang Qingsong

Nonflammable electrolytes are promising substitutes for the state-of-the-art carbonate-based electrolytes in order to directly enhance the safety characteristics of lithium ion batteries. Combination of trimethyl phosphate (TMP) and a fluorinated ether of 1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethyl 2,2,3,3-tetrafluoropropyl ether (FEPE) is designed to formulate nonflammable electrolytes. The reformulated electrolytes of 1 mol/L LiPF 6 /TMP + FEPE (9:1, 8:2 and 7:3, w/w) are totally nonflammable. The FEPE solvent has higher oxidative stability and the FEPE-containing electrolytes have better separator wettability than the pure TMP electrolyte (1 mol/L LiPF 6 /TMP). The improved oxidative stability and separator wettability can enhance electrochemical stability of electrolyte on high-voltage cathode LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 . In Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 /LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 cells, the FEPE-containing electrolyte exhibits the better cycling stability than the pure TMP electrolyte, and the solvent composed of TMP + FEPE (8:2) is the optimal ratio. The Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 /LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 cell with the optimal electrolyte exhibits better rate capability because of the reduced polarization and improved oxidation stability. This work reveals the effect of fluorinated ethers on separator wettability of TMP-based nonflammable electrolytes and high-voltage applications.

Enhancing the electrochemical performance of high-voltage LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 batteries with a multifunctional inorganic MgHPO4 electrolyte additive

Wei Aijia,Yang Yuqi,Mu Jinping,He Rui,Li Xiaohui,Zhang Haipeng,Liu Zhenfa,Wang Shasha,Zheng Yong,Mei Shuxing

The instability of the electrode/electrolyte interface and the metal-ions dissolution of high-voltage LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 (LNMO) material lead to significant degradation of cycling performance, thereby limiting the large-scale application of LNMO-based batteries. Here, inorganic Mg/Ca/Sr-contained phosphates (MgHPO 4 , CaHPO 4 , and SrHPO 4 ) are used individually as functional additives of standard electrolytes to enhance the cycling performance of LNMO. Combined with theoretical calculations, a series of electrochemical measurements and characteristics corroborate that the MgHPO 4 is the optimal additive and can preferentially undergo oxidation and reduction decomposition over carbonate solvents. Electrochemical results reveal that the LNMO/Li half-cell containing the MgHPO 4 additive shows a capacity retention of 91.9% after 500 cycles at 5 C, higher than that obtained with STD (76.5%). In addition, the LNMO/graphite (Gr) full-cell with MgHPO 4 additive increases the capacity retention from 70.8 to 78.0% after 100 cycles at 0.5 C. The addition of MgHPO 4 allows a thin, uniform, and conductive cathode-electrolyte interphase (CEI) and solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) film to be formed on the LNMO cathode and graphite anodes. Furthermore, the preferential reduction of MgHPO 4 inhibits the lithium dendritic growth and enables the formation of a more stable SEI on the Li anode. Besides, the MgHPO 4 additive serves as a scavenger of detrimental HF, thus suppressing the Ni/Mn ions dissolution and improving the structural stability of LNMO. This study provides a cost-effective strategy involving the use of an inorganic additive for improving the electrochemical performance of high-voltage lithium-ion batteries.

Electrochemical performance of high voltage LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 based on environmentally friendly binders

Tayfun Kocak,Xiadong Qi,Xiaogang Zhang

The extended cyclability of LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 (LNMO) electrodes featuring different water-based binders is here reported. LNMO electrodes with guar gum (GG) binders show a relatively stable cycle performance at 0 °C and room temperature. However, water-based binders exhibit higher capacity fade than those with polyvinylidene fluoride (PVdF) binder at 50 °C. Although PVdF binder has a lower adhesion force than CMC and GG; PVdF-based electrodes exhibit better capacity retention than those with water-based binders at 50 °C over 1000 cycles. Finally, operando Differential Electrochemical Mass Spectrometry (DEMS) experiments were carried out to analyze the evolution of volatile decomposition products formed over cycling at 1C and 30 °C of CMC-, GG- and PVdF-based LNMO electrodes. CO 2 and H 2 gas evolutions increase remarkably at both high temperatures and high potentials, i.e., ~ 4.7 V.

Two-Step Solid State Synthesis of Medium Entropy LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 Cathode with Enhanced Electrochemical Performance

Wentao Wu,Shuai Zuo,Xu Zhang,Xuyong Feng

Solid state reaction is widely used in the synthesis of electrode materials, due to its low cost and good scalability. However, the traditional solid-state reaction is not suitable for the synthesis of materials with multiple elements, such as high entropy or medium entropy materials, due to the poor homogeneity of raw material mixing. Here, we prepared multi-element doped LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4(medium entropy) cathode material by two step solid state reaction. X-ray diffraction and Raman image show that the homogeneity of multi-element doped LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4cathode has been greatly improved with this two-step method. As a result, the electrochemical performance is greatly improved, comparing to traditional solid-state reaction. First, the specific capacity at 0.1 C is increased from 126 mAh/g to 137 mAh/g. With a high current density of 10 C, the specific capacity is even increased from 64 mAh/g to 89 mAh/g with this two-step method. Second, the cycle stability is enhanced, with capacity retention of 86% after cycling at 1 C for 500 times (vs. 71% for the one-step method).

Effect of Tributyl Borate on Electrochemical Performance at an Elevated Temperature of High-Voltage LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 Cathode

Tao Huang,Xiangzhen Zheng,Ying Pan,Qiaohong Li,Maoxiang Wu

Tributyl borate (TBB) is studied as a protective additive that enhances the interfacial stability of a LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 cathode/electrolyte at 5 V and 55 °C. Upon addition of 0.5 vol % TBB to the electrolyte (1.0 M LiPF6/EC:EMC:DMC, 1:1:1 wt %), the LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4/Li cell maintains a discharge capacity of 99.4 mAh g–1 at the 50th cycle at 55 °C, compared to that of the electrolyte without an additive, i.e., 36.6 mAh g–1. Furthermore, the TBB-enhanced Li/LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 cell exhibits a higher discharge capacity of 96 mAh g–1 at 3C, whereas the cell without TBB delivers only 84 mAh g–1. Theoretical calculations and differential capacity (dQ/dV) versus voltage (V) analysis show that TBB improves the electrochemical performance at 5 V and 55 °C by preferentially oxidizing on the LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 surface. The results obtained from electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and inductively coupled plasma-mass spectroscopy measurements reveal that TBB generates a thin, less resistive film on the surface of LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4. This TBB-derived film inhibits the decomposition of the carbonate solvent, while suppressing the dissolution of Ni and Mn ions from LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4.

Chen Dongrui,Li Benzhen,Liao Youhao,Lan Hongwei,Lin Haibin,Xing Lidan,Wang Yating,Li Weishan

Three samples, LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 , LiNi 0.4 Mn 1.4 Co 0.2 O 4 , and LiNi 0.4 Mn 1.4 Cr 0.15 Co 0.05 O 4 , were prepared by sol–gel method and characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, Fourier transformed infrared spectroscope, scanning electron microscopy, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller surface area, four-probe resistance, cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and charge–discharge test. It is found that the co-doped sample LiNi 0.4 Mn 1.4 Cr 0.15 Co 0.05 O 4 exhibits an improved performance compared with the Co-doped sample LiNi 0.4 Mn 1.4 Co 0.2 O 4 and the undoped sample LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 , especially at elevated temperature. At 25 °C, the discharge capacity of LiNi 0.4 Mn 1.4 Cr 0.15 Co 0.05 O 4 is 130 mAh g −1 at 0.1 C and 103 mAh g −1 at 10 C. At an elevated temperature (55 °C), its 1 C discharge capacity is 136 mAh g −1 and maintains 95.6 % of its initial capacity after 100 cycles. Compared with the reported results of LiNi 0.4 Mn 1.4 Co 0.2 O 4 and LiNi 0.475 Mn 1.475 Co 0.05 O 4 , the co-doped sample LiNi 0.4 Mn 1.4 Cr 0.15 Co 0.05 O 4 , with least content of Co, 0.05, possesses not only the high C-rate capacity but also the structural stability. The mechanism on the electrochemical performance improvement of LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 by the co-doping was discussed.
