The nickel-rich cathode LiNi0.6Co0.1Mn0.3O2 (NCM613) is a promising cathode material but has poor cycle stability, especially at a high cutoff voltage. Aiming at modulating the unit cell parameters via heteroatom dopants while providing a lithium-ion conductor coating, in this work, boron-based-modified NCM613 has been synthesized with both LiBO2 coating and boron doping via a solid-state method. The optimal modified sample LBO-0.4 exhibits excellent cycle stability at room temperature (2.8–4.5 V) with a retention of 94.8% at 1 C after 100 cycles (versus 79.7% of the pristine sample LBO-0) and 70.7% at 5 C after 1000 cycles (versus a retention lower than 1% for LBO-0). The DLi+ values of LBO-0.4 are significantly higher than those of LBO-0, which is attributed to the enlarged crystal lattice volume generated by the incorporation of B3+ into NCM613. Combined with characterization by Ar sputtering-assisted XPS, TEM, XRD, etc., it is illustrated that LiBO2 coating and B3+ doping can synergistically enhance the electrochemical performance of the NCM613 at a high cutoff voltage, high temperature, and high rate. In addition, DFT calculations disclose that the boron dopant is preferential to locate in the interstice among three Ni atoms of the TM–O layer of NCM, which facilitates the formation of more amount Ni2+, leading to the improved electrochemical performance of NCM613. Such ion doping and surface coating strategy can provide useful guidance on the modification of other layered oxide cathode materials.

Ni-rich layered cathodes LiNi x Co y Mn 1-x-y O 2 (x ≥ 0.6) with high capacity and low manufacturing cost have aroused widespread concern. However, the surface/interface instability and structural degradation can reduce their service life. Aiming at modifying the electrochemical performance of Nickel rich NCM via introducing oxygen defects as well as forming protective coating layers, herein, a wet grinding procedure was explored to treat the mixture of NCM613 and a small amount of the phosphorus precursor NaH 2 PO 2 following by a low-temperature calcination. The results indicate that the modified samples possess the rock salt/spinel phase coating layer and PO 4 3− doping, which synergistically improve the cycle stability and rate performance of NCM613. After 500 cycles at 1C (2.8–4.5 V), the modified samples NCM613-0.3P and NCM613-0.6P show the retention of 81.5% and 85.9%, respectively. Even after 350 cycles at 5C, NCM613-0.6P exhibits an impressive capacity retention of 98.0%, extremely superior to the pristine NCM613 (25.7%). Moreover, for other Ni-rich layered cathode material (LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 ), such procedure can be applied successfully to improve the cycle stability. This work provides a useful modification strategy to enhance the stability of Ni-rich cathode materials.

Electrode (including cathode and anode) /electrolyte interfaces play a vital role in determining battery performance. Especially, high-voltage lithium metal batteries (HVLMBs) with the Ni-rich layered oxide ternary cathode (NCM) can be considered a promising energy storage technology due to their outstanding energy density. However, it is still extremely challenging to address the unstable electrode/electrolyte interface and structural collapse of polycrystalline NCM at high voltage, greatly restraining its practical applications. In this work, a novel electrolyte additive, tris(2-cyanoethyl) borate (TCEB), has been used to construct the robust nitrogen (N) and boron (B)-rich protective films on single-crystal LiNi 0.6 Co 0.1 Mn 0.3 O 2 (SNCM) cathode and lithium metal anode surfaces, which could effectively mitigate parasitic reactions against electrolyte corrosion and retain the structural integrity of electrode. Remarkably, the SNCM||Li metal cell using TCEB-containing electrolyte maintains unprecedentedly superb capacity retention of 80% after 100 cycles at an ultrahigh charging voltage of 4.7 V (versus Li/Li + ). This finding provides a valuable reference to construct a stable electrode/electrolyte interface for the HVLMBs with achieving high-energy density.

Due to the advantages of high safety and high energy density, solid-state lithium batteries (SSLBs) are promising competitors for next-generation batteries. Unfortunately, the growth of Li dendrites and irreversible capacity loss caused by the Li metal anode/solid electrolyte interfacial incompatibility remain challenges. Herein, an in situ formed artificial protective layer between the lithium metal anode and solid electrolyte Li6PS5Cl (LPSC) is introduced. A stable solid electrolyte interface (SEI) is in situ formed in the Li/Li6PS5Cl interface via the electrochemical reduction of the liquid electrolyte LiTFSI/tetraethylene glycol dimethyl ether (Li(G4)TFSI), which is beneficial for the improvement of the stability of interfacial chemistry and homogeneous lithium deposition behavior. The assembled Li/Li(G4)TFSI-assisted Li6PS5Cl/Li symmetric cells enable stable cycles for 850 and 400 h at a current density of 0.1 and 0.2 mA/cm2, respectively. Moreover, the LiNi0.6Co0.1Mn0.3O2(NCM613)/Li(G4)TFSI-assisted Li6PS5Cl/Li SSLBs can achieve prominent cycling stability at room temperature. This work provides a new insight into the interfacial modification to design SSLBs with high energy density.
