LiNi 1/3 Co 1/3 Mn 1/3 O 2 is successfully coated with MnO 2 by a chemical deposition method. The X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and high resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM) results demonstrate that MnO 2 forms a thin layer on the surface of LiNi 1/3 Co 1/3 Mn 1/3 O 2 without destroying the crystal structure of the core material. Compared with pristine LiNi 1/3 Co 1/3 Mn 1/3 O 2 , the MnO 2 -coated sample shows enhanced electrochemical performance especially the rate capability. Even at a current density of 750 mA g −1 , the discharge capacity of MnO 2 -coated LiNi 1/3 Co 1/3 Mn 1/3 O 2 is 155.15 mAh g −1 , while that of the pristine electrode is only 132.84 mAh g −1 in the range of 2.5–4.5 V. The cyclic voltammetry (CV) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) curves show that the MnO 2 coating layer reacts with Li + during cycling, which is responsible for the higher discharge capacity of MnO 2 -coated LiNi 1/3 Co 1/3 Mn 1/3 O 2 . Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) results confirmed that the MnO 2 coating layer plays an important role in reducing the charge transfer resistance on the electrolyte–electrode interfaces.

High-temperature lithium battery system operated between 150 and 300 °C is highly desirable to be applied in oil/gas and geothermal explorations. However, the development of cathode material for high-temperature lithium batteries is relatively sluggish. In this study, LiNi 1/3 Co 1/3 Mn 1/3 O 2 (NCM) is coated with Li 2 MoO 4 by a facile solid-state reaction between MoO 3 and surface lithium residue and the resulting composite is applied in high-temperature lithium batteries as a novel cathode material. Such a strategy can not only remove lithium residue components, but also facilitate lithium-ion transport in NCM through the resulting Li 2 MoO 4 coating layer. At 200 °C, the discharge capacity and rate capacity of Li 2 MoO 4 coated NCM are dramatically improved compared to the pristine one. At 300 °C, the electrochemical performance of 4m-NCM is better than other samples, and each sample exhibits better electrochemical performances than it is at 200 °C due to the enhanced kinetics in high temperature.

In this work, a hollow LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 (H-NCM) nanosphere cathode with excellent electrochemical performance is developed for lithium-ion batteries. Preparation of the H-NCM nanospheres involves the sacrificial template method, in which carbon nanospheres work as the template and polyvinylpyrrolidone works as an additive. Structural and morphological analyses show that the as-prepared H-NCM nanospheres are highly uniform with diameters of approximately 50 nm and wall thicknesses of 10 nm. Electrochemical tests demonstrate that the H-NCM cathode not only manifests outstanding rate performance in the potential window of 2.5–4.5 V with high reversible specific capacities of 205.6, 194.9, 177.8, 165.9, 151.7, 126.0, and 115.3 mA h g–1 at 0.1, 0.2, 0.5, 1, 2, 5, and 10 C, respectively, but also delivers excellent stability with a capacity retention of 60.1% at 10 C after 2000 cycles. The superior electrochemical performance of the H-NCM cathode can be put down to the distinctive hollow interior structure with thin nanostructured walls, which can synergistically benefit the significantly enhanced rate capability and cycling stability.

In this work, we have prepared the carbon-LiNi 1/3 Co 1/3 Mn 1/3 O 2 composite through a simple and cost-effective method at a relatively low temperature (i.e., 180 °C) via spray drying. Nitric acid-treated commercial Super P powder could be well dispersed among LiNi 1/3 Co 1/3 Mn 1/3 O 2 particles, while untreated Super P powder is particularly difficult to be uniformly distributed. The obtained I (003) /I (104) of the treated Super P-LiNi 1/3 Co 1/3 Mn 1/3 O 2, according to the X-ray diffraction pattern, is higher than 1.70, suggesting that the highly ordered structure of LiNi 1/3 Co 1/3 Mn 1/3 O 2 is maintained after compositing via the proposed approach. The resulted cathode material shows superior rate capability and stability, delivering a specific capacity of 115.7 mAh g −1 even at 1.5 A g −1 , and a capacity retention of 87.0% after 500 cycles. In contrast, pure LiNi 1/3 Co 1/3 Mn 1/3 O 2 delivers only 57.4 mAh g −1 at 1.5 A g −1 and remains 35.2% after 500 cycles. Carbon-coated LiNi 1/3 Co 1/3 Mn 1/3 O 2 prepared from the carbonization of sucrose delivers as high as 141.0 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 , but remains only 47.5% after 100 cycles. The enhancement of rate capability and stability from the treated Super P-LiNi 1/3 Co 1/3 Mn 1/3 O 2 is due to the facilitation of the electron conduction by introducing homogenously distributed carbon, and thanks to the well-maintained ordered structure of LiNi 1/3 Co 1/3 Mn 1/3 O 2 .

Submicrometer-sized LiNi 1/3 Co 1/3 Mn 1/3 O 2 (NCM111) crystals with homogeneous composition are prepared via a polymer-chelation chemical solution process. The complexed chelate agents of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and polyethyleneimine (PEI) could chelate all metal ions in one step, with intimate mixing at the atomic level, ensuring a homogeneous ion distribution in the product. The as-prepared NCM111 crystals have a narrow particle size distribution with an average size of 250 nm, which can effectively shorten the lithium ion diffusion path. In addition, the NCM111 crystals majorly consist of electrochemically active {010} facets and low Li + /Ni 2+ cation mixing, thus delivering a high reversible discharge capacity of 156.1 mAh g −1 after 100th cycles and good rate capability of 102.7 mAh g −1 at 10 C. Furthermore, it is found that the induction of excess Li could deteriorate the rate capability and increase the Li + solid-state diffusion resistance. However, Al 3+ doping could effectively improve the cycling performance, while Nb 5+ doping could increase significantly the discharge capacity as well as rate capability. Owing to the flexibility of the chelating chemistry , the synthesis should be extended to prepare other multicomponent single-crystal cathodes with homogeneous composition and desired substation.

A high-performance LiNi 1/3 Co 1/3 Mn 1/3 O 2 cathode with a uniform pinecone-like morphology is reported, which is prepared by a solvothermal process, using urea to tune the pH of a mixed solvent of ethylene glycol and water, and a subsequent calcination process. The material has uniform, well-defined pinecone-like particles with lengths of 3–4 μm and widths of 1–2 μm. It exhibits a significantly enhanced cathodic performance in a Li-ion battery, with a reversible discharging capacity of up to 199 mAh g −1 when it is charged to 4.6 V at a charge/discharge rate of 0.2 C and of 159.2 mAh g −1 at a rate of 2 C. After 100 charge/discharge cycles, the capacity retention is 91%, demonstrating its superior capacity and stability in comparison with a sample prepared via the coprecipitation method. The cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impendence spectroscopy results reveal that the pinecone-like LiNi 1/3 Co 1/3 Mn 1/3 O 2 material has markedly lower polarization and lower resistance to the migration of lithium ions than the coprecipitation sample. The material's high performance, especially its outstanding capacity at a high discharge rate and its significantly enhanced cyclability, makes the synthesized pinecone-like LiNi 1/3 Co 1/3 Mn 1/3 O 2 a promising high-performance cathode material for lithium-ion batteries.

The effect of niobium (Nb) doping in one-dimensional (1D) nanostructured LiNi 1/3 Co 1/3 Mn 1/3 O 2 (NCM) cathode has been investigated for this study. Nb-doped NCM nanofibres have been prepared through an electrospinning method followed by controllable sintering process . X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results confirmed that Nb-doping can effectively reduce cation mixing, thus improve the structural stability . In addition, due to the valence compensation balance, Mn 4+ ions are partially reduced to Mn 3+ ions, which can further improve the conductivity and stable cycling performance. Therefore, increased discharge capacities, high first cycle efficiencies and superior cycling and rate behaviors are observed between normal voltage limits for the Nb-doped NCM compositions in electrochemical cells . Specifically, Nb-doped NCM nanofibres achieve a high discharge capacity of 200.4 mAh/g at 0.1 C with a high Coulombic efficiency of 92.3%. Moreover, a high discharge capacity of 118.7 mAh/g even at 5 C with 83.3% capacity retention after 200 cycles is also achieved. Also, cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) results demonstrate that Nb-doping can mitigate the electrochemical polarization of NCM and improve the lithium ion diffusion coefficient , leading to the improvement of electrochemical performances . It is highly expected that our findings can provide a general approach to improve the electrochemical properties of cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries.

LiNi 1/3 Co 1/3 Mn 1/3 O 2 as a promising cathode material in lithium-ion batteries was synthesized by flash/field-assisted sintering technique for the first time. This study showed that the current-limited synthesis of LiNi 1/3 Co 1/3 Mn 1/3 O 2 could be carried out at temperatures less than 400°C for only 8 minutes, compared with the conventional pressureless sintering at 850°C for 12 hours. X-ray diffraction results showed the phase evolution from precursor mixtures to the final LiNi 1/3 Co 1/3 Mn 1/3 O 2 products during flash/field-assisted sintering process and a well-layered structure without undesirable cation mixing in the as-formed LiNi 1/3 Co 1/3 Mn 1/3 O 2 . Combined with the lowered sintering temperatures and reduced sintering time, the excellent electrochemical performance of flash/field-assisted sintered LiNi 1/3 Co 1/3 Mn 1/3 O 2 materials suggested that this technique could be an energy-efficient approach for the synthesis of lithium-ion battery cathode materials and other materials requiring high-temperature heat treatment.

CN(CH 2 ) 2 Si(CH 3 )(OCH 2 CH 2 OCH 3 ) 2 (BNS) is used as electrolyte solvent to improve the safety for LiNi 1/3 Co 1/3 Mn 1/3 O 2 (NCM)/graphite battery . BNS increases the thermal stability of the carbonate-based electrolyte with (de) lithiated cathode/anode and the electrochemical stability of coin cells. By using an optimal BNS-based electrolyte formula, 13 Ah NCM/graphite prismatic cell achieves 95.8% retain of capacity at 2 C/3 C (charge/discharge) rate after 600 cycles. Meanwhile, 13 Ah prismatic cell exhibits improved safety performance in the nail penetration test.

The proliferation of vehicles and portable devices has led to a significant increase in the number of spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Recycling these spent LIBs is crucial to prevent negative environmental impacts and resource wastage. However, traditional pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical methods suffer from inherent drawbacks as being time-consuming, energy-intensive and causing secondary pollution. Herein, an innovative approach is proposed to direct regenerate degraded LiNi 1/3 Co 1/3 Mn 1/3 O 2 (NCM111) in-situ by combining hydrothermal treatment with solid-state sintering. Structural and morphology characterizations reveal that the amorphous layer near the surface of degraded NCM111 (D-NCM111) are dissolved after the hydrothermal treatment, restoring the original layered structure due to the relithiation reaction, whereas the target stoichiometric ratios of transition metal elements are achieved through the solid-state sintering process. The regenerated NCM111 (R-NCM111) exhibits a high discharge specific capacity of 152.3 mAh/g at 0.1 C and a capacity retention of 96.1% at 1 C after 300 cycles. The recycling method presented in this work is not only facile but also scalable, potentially opening a new pathway to address the environmental challenges posed by massive spent LIBs.

Although lithium ion battery is known to be an excellent renewable energy provider in electronic markets further application of it has been limited by its notoriously poor performance at low temperature, especially below −20 °C. In this paper, the electrochemical performance of the LiNi 1/3 Co 1/3 Mn 1/3 O 2 cathode materials coated by lithium boron oxide (LBO) glass was investigated at a temperature range from 20 to −40 °C. The results show that the LBO coating not only helps to improve the discharge capacity of LiNi 1/3 Co 1/3 Mn 1/3 O 2 at room temperature but also increase the discharge capacity retention of the LiNi 1/3 Co 1/3 Mn 1/3 O 2 from 22.5% to 57.8% at −40 °C. Electrochemical impedance spectra results reveal that the LBO coating plays an important role in reducing the charge-transfer resistance on the electrolyte–electrode interfaces and improving lithium ion diffusion coefficients . The mechanism associated with the change of the structure and electrical properties are discussed in detail.

The polyacrylic latex (LA132) was firstly reported as a water-soluble binder for LiNi 1/3 Co 1/3 Mn 1/3 O 2 (NCM) cathode in Li-ion battery. The electrochemical performances of NCM cathode with LA132 binder were investigated and compared with the conventional water-soluble sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and commercial non-aqueous polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF). NCM cathode with LA132 binder exhibited a much higher specific capacity of 146 mAh g −1 and capacity retention of 96.4 % after 100 cycles as compared with 122 mAh g −1 /88 % and 121 mAh g −1 /75% for the NCM electrode with CMC and PVDF, respectively. In addition, NCM cathode with LA132 binder exhibited better rate capability than that of CMC and PVDF, e.g., retaining 34.3 % capacity of C/5 at 5 C rate as compared with 28.5 and 10.9 % for CMC and PVDF, respectively.
