Lithium Difluorophosphate as a Dendrite-Suppressing Additive for Lithium Metal Batteries

Pengcheng Shi,Linchao Zhang,Hongfa Xiang,Xin Liang,Yi Sun,Wu Xu

The notorious lithium (Li) dendrites and the low Coulombic efficiency (CE) of Li anode are two major obstacles to the practical utilization of Li metal batteries (LMBs). Introducing a dendrite-suppressing additive into nonaqueous electrolytes is one of the facile and effective solutions to promote the commercialization of LMBs. Herein, Li difluorophosphate (LiPO2F2, LiDFP) is used as an electrolyte additive to inhibit Li dendrite growth by forming a vigorous and stable solid electrolyte interphase film on metallic Li anode. Moreover, the Li CE can be largely improved from 84.6% of the conventional LiPF6-based electrolyte to 95.2% by the addition of an optimal concentration of LiDFP at 0.15 M. The optimal LiDFP-containing electrolyte can allow the Li||Li symmetric cells to cycle stably for more than 500 and 200 h at 0.5 and 1.0 mA cm–2, respectively, much longer than the control electrolyte without LiDFP additive. Meanwhile, this LiDFP-containing electrolyte also plays an important role in enhancing the cycling stability of the Li||LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 cells with a moderately high mass loading of 9.7 mg cm–2. These results demonstrate that LiDFP has extensive application prospects as a dendrite-suppressing additive in advanced LMBs.

Synergistic bulk and interfacial engineering of PEO-based electrolyte via LiFePO4 and LiPO2F2 for robust solid-state lithium metal batteries

Linyuan Ma,Jinhai Liu,Mengwei Li,Yangming Hu,Leiping Liao,Yuanfu Deng,Guohua Chen

Solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) are promising candidates for next-generation safe solid-state lithium metal batteries (SSLMBs) due to their high flexibility and ease of processing. However, their widespread application is hindered by intrinsic limitations such as high crystallinity, inadequate mechanical strength, and interfacial instability against the lithium anode. To address these issues and construct a stable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) and cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI), this study introduces a solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) design. The design incorporates commercial LiFePO 4 (LFP, 30 wt%) particles as an inorganic filler into a polyethylene oxide (PEO) matrix, along with LiPO 2 F 2 (LDP, 5 wt%) as a film-forming additive. The optimized SPE enables a Li||Li symmetric cell to cycle stably for over 1360 h at a current density of 0.2 mA cm −2 . Furthermore, the LFP||Li cell demonstrates remarkable durability, sustaining 800 cycles at 1 C (1 C = 170 mA g −1 ) with a high-capacity retention of 81.1%. The NCM811||Li cell further validates this robustness, retaining 87.4% of its capacity after 300 cycles at 1 C (1 C = 180 mA g −1 ). This work presents a simple and cost-effective strategy for fabricating high-performance SPEs and provides new insight into selecting composite fillers for durable solid-state lithium-metal batteries (SSLMBs).

In-situ modification of ultrathin and uniform layer on LiCoO2 particles for 4.2 V poly(ethylene oxide) based solid-state lithium batteries with excellent cycle performance

Wei Feng,Jianling Li,Huirong Liu,Mingliang Zhao,Jianjian Zhong,Jiameng Feng

Poly(ethylene oxide) based polymer electrolytes(PEO-SPEs) suffer from a narrow electrochemical window and deliver poor electrochemical performance when coupling with 4.2 V cathode. This severely limits the scope of its application. Here, a combination of physical stirring and electrochemistry is used to form an ultrathin and uniform cladding layer on the LiCoO 2 particles. The results show that in addition to the decomposition of LiPO 2 F 2 during the charge/discharge cycling, decomposition reactions occur during the stirring and drying process by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). This novel method effectively improves the electrochemical performance of 4.2 V PEO based solid-state lithium batteries . In particular, the cell shows excellent and stable electrochemical performance, exhibiting a discharge capacity of 112.0 mAh g −1 after 200 cycles, a capacity retention rate of 79.4% and a capacity decay rate of approximately 0.1% per cycle when the surface of LiCoO 2 is coated with 2 wt% LiPO 2 F 2 . In comparison, the discharge capacity of the unmodified LiCoO 2 cathode is found to be only 75.6 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles, with a poor capacity retention rate of 56.8%. Based on the basis of the above research, a new process was explored and also shows excellent interfacial stability by dispersing LiPO 2 F 2 directly inside the binder which with a discharge capacity of 109.2 mAh g −1 and a capacity retention rate of 84.5% after 145 cycles. This novel approach opens up a new pathway for solving the problem of interfacial stability between PEO based polymer electrolytes and high-voltage cathode.

Manipulating Na occupation and constructing protective film of P2-Na0.67Ni0.33Mn0.67O2 as long-term cycle stability cathode for sodium-ion batteries

Yiran Sun,Pengfei Zhou,Siyu Liu,Zhongjun Zhao,Yihao Pan,Xiangyan Shen,Xiaozhong Wu,Jinping Zhao,Junying Weng,Jin Zhou

P2-Na 0.67 Ni 0.33 Mn 0.67 O 2 (NNMO) is promising cathode material for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) due to its high specific capacity and fast Na + diffusion rate. Nonetheless, the irreversible P2-O2 phase transformation, Na + /vacancy ordering, and transition metal (TM) dissolution seriously damage its cycling stability and restrict its commercialization process. Herein, Na occupation manipulation and interface stabilization are proposed to strengthen the phase structure of NNMO by synergistic Zn/Ti co-doping and introducing lithium difluorophosp (LiPO 2 F 2 ) film-forming electrolyte additive . The Zn/Ti co-doping regulates the occupancy ratio of Na e /Na f at Na sites and disorganizes the Na + /vacancy ordering, resulting in a faster Na + diffusion kinetics and reversible P2-Z phase transition for P2-Na 0.67 Ni 0.28 Zn 0.05 Mn 0.62 Ti 0.05 O 2 (NNZMTO). Meanwhile, the LiPO 2 F 2 additive can form homogeneous and ultrathin cathode-electrolyte interphase (CEI) on NNZMTO surface, which can stabilize the NNZMTO-electrolyte interface to prevent TM dissolution, surface structure transformation, and micro-crack generation. Combination studies of in situ and ex situ characterizations and theoretical calculations were used to elucidate the storage mechanism of NNZMTO with LiPO 2 F 2 additive. As a result, the NNZMTO displays outstanding capacity retention of 94.44% after 500 cycles at 1C with 0.3 wt% LiPO 2 F 2 , excellent rate performance of 92.5 mA h g −1 at 8C with 0.1 wt% LiPO 2 F 2 , and remarkable full cell capability. This work highlights the important role of manipulating Na occupation and constructing protective film in the design of layered materials, which provides a promising direction for developing high-performance cathodes for SIBs.

Synergistic cationic co-doping and electrolyte engineering enables stable anionic redox in P2-Type layered cathodes for sodium-ion batteries

Pengju Zhang,Jinglin Mu,Mingyu Xie,Tianyu Xue,Minghui Ding,Zhen Zhou,Junying Weng,Pengfei Zhou

Activating anionic redox reactions (ARR) in P2-type layered oxide cathodes has drawn great attention as a promising strategy to break through the bottleneck of their energy density limit. However, irreversible lattice oxygen loss and detrimental structure distortion associated with ARR are still challenges, resulting in severe capacity fading and sluggish reaction kinetics. Herein, we designed a novel P2-Na 0.67 Li 0.15 Mg 0.1 Mn 0.75 O 2 (NLMOMg0.1) sphere as a cathode for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs), leveraging the synergistic effect of Li/Mg co-doping and a LiPO 2 F 2 film-forming additive to enhance the reversibility and reaction kinetics of ARR. The Li/Mg co-doping effectively activates ARR and reduces the Mn 3+ ratio, weakening the Jahn-Teller effect and and minimizing structure distortion. The LiPO 2 F 2 film-forming additive in the electrolyte can form a stable cathode-electrolyte interphase film on the surface of NLMOMg0.1, significantly suppressing side reactions between the electrode and electrolyte and thereby preventing irreversible lattice oxygen loss. Impressively, NLMOMg0.1 with 0.2 wt% LiPO 2 F 2 additive attains a high capacity of 159.1mAh g −1 and an outstanding retention rate of 97.1 % at 0.5C after 300 cycles. In-situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) experiments confirm the excellent structural stability, and in-situ differential electrochemical mass spectrometry (DEMS) and in-situ optical microscope tests demonstrate the inhibition of lattice oxygen loss during the cycling process. This study provides practical guidelines for designing layered oxide cathode materials for SIBs with high stability and dynamics.
