Development of novel ultraviolet (UV) upconversion materials has been emerging as a hot research topic for application in tunable UV lasers, photocatalysis, sterilization, tagging, and most recently luminescence thermometry. We readily synthesized a series of Ho3+/Gd3+ co-doped LiYO2 upconversion phosphors by a traditional high-temperature reaction. Under excitation from a blue ∼445 nm laser, LiYO2:Ho3+,Gd3+ polycrystalline powders yield intense sharp ultraviolet B (UVB) upconversion luminescence from Gd3+ 6Pj (j = 7/2, 5/2, 3/2) excited states. By means of steady and dynamic photoluminescence spectra, we systematically investigated the involved two-photon absorption upconversion as well as the accompanying energy transfer processes between Ho3+ and Gd3+ ions in the LiYO2 host lattice. Interestingly, the distinguishable UVB luminescence constituents from Gd3+ 6Pj excited states exhibit sensitive temperature dependence in a 353–673 K range. Shedding light on thermal equilibria between Gd3+ 6Pj UV-emitting levels, their luminescence intensity ratios follow Boltzmann statistics for the application of new luminescence thermometry. For the scheme of 6P7/2–6P3/2 thermally coupled levels, it works over a temperature range of 373–673 K with a maximum relative sensitivity (Sr) of about 1.07% K−1 at 373 K, and its 6P7/2–6P5/2 counterpart works over 353–533 K with a maximum Sr of about 0.83% K−1 at 353 K. Overall, our study provides a new pathway to develop UV upconversion materials, and promotes the application of Gd3+-related UV luminescence constituents in sensitive temperature sensing over a wide temperature range.

Ratiometric luminescent thermometry is favored for its unique advantages and significant potential applications, particularly in the biomedical field. That has driven growing interest in the development of novel luminescent materials with ultra-high sensitivity in the physiological temperature range. Our study focuses on materials that exhibit temperature-induced phase transition within the physiological temperature range, thus facilitating the development of highly sensitive luminescent thermometers. Through a series of experimental explorations, we have discovered that LiYO 2 :1%Sm 3+ undergoes a phase transition from a monoclinic structure to a tetragonal structure within the temperature range of 320–330 K. Subsequently, a luminescent thermometer based on LiYO 2 :Sm 3+ phosphor was designed, capitalizing on the contrasting thermal response of the emissions associated with monoclinic and tetragonal structures, achieving ultra-high sensitivity of 17.51% K −1 at 322 K, making it suitable for the application in the biomedical field. Especially, the optimal temperature range for LiYO 2 : Sm 3+ thermometer aligns well with mitochondrial temperature, presenting potential applications in cancer diagnosis and photothermal therapy.

Herein, LiYO 2 : Er 3+ phosphors were synthesized via a high-temperature solid-state reaction method. Under the excitation of a 980 nm laser, the phosphors exhibit strong green (563 nm, 4 S 3/2 → 4 I 15/2 ) and red (662 nm, 4 F 9/2 → 4 I 15/2 ) light upconversion emissions. Based on the upconversion luminescence spectra, the optimal doping concentration of Er 3+ ions in LiYO 2 was determined to be 0.03. In addition, the optical temperature sensing properties of the LiYO 2 : 0.03 Er 3+ phosphor were investigated using the nonthermally coupled method by analyzing the luminescence intensity ratio (LIR) (I 563 /I 662 ). The maximum relative sensitivity ( S R ) and absolute sensitivity ( S A ) reached 1.07% K −1 (at 473 K) and 0.01 K −1 (at 473 K), respectively. It shows excellent thermal sensitivity. This study highlights the significant potential of LiYO 2 : Er 3+ phosphors for applications in noncontact temperature sensing fields.

The development of blue/green/red tricolor upconversion (UC) phosphors under invisible light irradiation has attracted significant interest in emerging applications such as anti-counterfeiting, three-dimensional (3D) optical data storage, and solid-state 3D displays. In this study, a series of LiYO 2 :RE 3+ ,Yb 3+ (RE = Tm, Ho, Eu) phosphors are successfully prepared via first precipitation process followed by calcination, and completely optimized for efficient tricolor UC luminescence with 980 nm laser excitation. Mechanisms involving two- or three-photon absorption processes and low-phonon-energy-suppressed multi-phonon relaxation have been proposed for Ho 3+ (Eu 3+ )/Yb 3+ and Tm 3+ /Yb 3+ codoping, respectively. In addition, the RE 3+ (Yb 3+ ) concentration-induced phase transition of the LiYO 2 host is discussed for interesting possibilities in spectral regulation. Based on the broad color gamut achieved by the tricolor UC phosphor mixture, homochromatic and polychromatic metamerisms are experimentally fabricated via screen printing for high-level anti-counterfeiting and information security. Moreover, for a proof-of-concept demonstration, prototypes of 3D optical data storage and volumetric displays are constructed by embedding tricolor UC mixtures and their 3D printed patterns in polydimethylsiloxane. It is believed that the continuous exploration of tricolor UC under invisible light excitation for metamerism anti-counterfeiting and 3D displays can promote the development of high-level information security and advanced volumetric display technologies.
