Cost-Effective Preparation of Carbonic Anhydrase with Superior Performance for Assisting Amine and Amino Acid Ionic Liquid Blends in CO2 Absorption and Desorption

Lei Mao,Yaxin Chen,Ruifang Zhang,Chun Yang,Yanhong Zhou,Guangya Zhang

The utilization of carbonic anhydrases (CAs) for CO2 capture aligns with the principles of environmental sustainability. However, there is an urgent need to minimize the cost of CA purification while improving their performance in harsh environments. A novel strategy was proposed to solve the above problems by employing the ferritin-tagged CA variant (DvCA8.0-F). The purification is achieved by low-speed centrifugation, yielding 92% activity recovery and 95% purity. After 14 weeks of incubation in a 50% MDEA solution at 50 °C, DvCA8.0-F maintained activity nearly equivalent to the initial activity, which showed remarkable stability compared to the free ones. Encouragingly, DvCA8.0-F had a yield of up to 800 mg/L, allowing for cost-effective CA-assisted CO2 absorption and desorption in MDEA solutions. The results show that DvCA8.0-F reduced the absorption time from 70 to 50 min at 40 °C and desorption time from 40 to 25 min at 96 °C in 25%MDEA+1%[N1111][Gly] solution with a final CO2 load and a stripped amount of CO2 at the same time. DvCA8.0-F exhibits the maximum reaction rate at 96 °C; the CO2 regeneration efficiency improved from 60% at 87 °C to 72%. When the concentration of DvCA8.0-F was 1.5 g/L, the absorption rate of CO2 reached about 90% of that of the 25% MEA solution. These results demonstrate the simplicity of preparation and the outstanding properties of DvCA8.0-F, which paves a feasible way for CA-assisted CO2 capture. This exciting strategy may also have excellent potential in enzymes for innovative chemical synthesis to achieve the sustainable development of green chemistry.

Enhancement of mass transfer performance by nanoparticles during the CO2 absorption with MDEA solution in a randomly packed tower

Jian Liu,Chengdong Kong,Liu Yang,Xiaojiang Wu,Zhongxiao Zhang

In this study, the mass transfer enhancement by nanoparticles during CO 2 absorption process with MDEA solution in a randomly packed tower was investigated. The mass transfer performance of MDEA solution with and without nanoparticles were quantified and analyzed in terms of the volumetric overall mass transfer coefficient ( K G a v ). An enhancement factor ( E ), defined as the ratio of K G a v with and without nanoparticles, was further introduced to evaluate the enhancement effect of the addition of nanoparticles. The effects of TiO 2 nanoparticle concentration, MDEA concentration, liquid flow rate, liquid temperature, inert gas flow rate, and CO 2 loading on K G a v and E were systematically studied in the packed tower. It is found that the maximum value of E can reach 1.37, when the nanoparticle concentration is 0.09 wt %, the liquid flow rate is 21.22 m 3 /m 2 ·h, the liquid temperature is 27°C, the MDEA concentration is 30%, the gas flow rate is 7.58 kmol/m 2 ·h and the CO 2 loading is 0.2 mol CO 2 /mol MDEA. Usually, the K G a v of the MDEA nanofluids can be increased by 10–37% in a randomly packed tower compared to that of the MDEA solution, which is consistent with the results from the bubbling reactors. However, when the CO 2 loading of absorption exceeds 50%, E becomes less than 1.0, which means that high CO 2 loading inhibits the enhancement effect of nanoparticles. In order to predict the mass transfer performance of MDEA nanofluid, a formula correlating E and various dimensionless operating parameters (i.e. L ̂ $\hat{L}$ , T ̂ $\hat{T}$ , C ̂ nf ${\hat{C}}_{{\rm{nf}}}$ and C ̂ MDEA ${\hat{C}}_{{\rm{MDEA}}}$ ) is proposed and fitted with an average absolute deviation of 14%. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry and John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Core-shell magnetic ZIF-8@Fe3O4-carbonic anhydrase biocatalyst for promoting CO2 absorption into MDEA solution

Qin Ying,Han Chen,Peijing Shao,Xiaowei Zhou,Xiaojia He,Jiexu Ye,Shihan Zhang,Jianmeng Chen,Lidong Wang

Tertiary amine-based absorption process possesses high absorption capacity and low heat duty for CO 2 capture. However, its slow CO 2 absorption rate retards its industrial application. This work developed a core-shell magnetic ZIF-8@Fe 3 O 4 -carbonic anhydrase composite to promote CO 2 absorption into tertiary amine, e.g., diethanolamine (MDEA) due to its easy recovery from the solution. The catalytic performance of CA@ZIF-8@Fe 3 O 4 that had three particle sizes were investigated. Experimental results revealed that the obtained CA@ZIF-8@Fe 3 O 4 can achieve the relative activity as high as 95.2 % compared with the free counterparts. Large particle size of ZIF-8@Fe 3 O 4 was beneficial to activity but adverse to loading. Magnetic analysis shows that the developed CA@ZIF-8@Fe 3 O 4 possessed remarkable magnetic response which made recycling more convenient.

Investigation of CO2 desorption kinetics in MDEA and MDEA+DEA rich amine solutions with thermo-gravimetric analysis method

Kang Shunji,Shen Xizhou,Yang Wenze

In this paper, by means of thermo-gravimetric analysis(TGA), the desorption kinetics of CO 2 absorbed in two kinds of rich amine solutions, MDEA (3.25mol/L) and MDEA+DEA(3.25mol/L-0.3mol/L), were investigated under different heating rates(2.5℃/min, 5℃/min, 10℃/min and 20℃/min). The thermal analysis kinetics was applied to analyze the TG-DTG curves of two rich amine solutions so as to research CO 2 desorption kinetics. In addition, the CO 2 desorption kinetics parameters have been calculated with model-free method Flynn-Wall-Ozawa (FWO) and model-fitting method Coats-Redfern (CR). The results indicated that CO 2 desorption process could be divided into two stages. The CO 2 and H 2 O were released with non-uniform speed in the first stage and MDEA or DEA with higher boiling points were evaporated in the second stage. For MDEA solution the average activation energy E was 50.36kJ/mol, the pre-exponential factor A was 1.68×10 7 , and the most probable integral mechanism function was G α = α 3 / 2 . For MDEA+DEA solution the average activation energy E was 59.68kJ/mol, the pre-exponential factor A was 2.22×10 7 , and the most probable integral mechanism function was G α = [ ( 1 + α ) 1 / 3 − 1 ] 2 . The technical feasibility of CO 2 desorption performance in rich amine solutions with thermo-gravimetric analysis method was demonstrated.

Enhancement of CO2 capture in the MDEA solution by introducing TETA or TETA-AEP mixtures as an activator

Mei Wang,Na Rao,Yuqing Liu,Jiale Li,Qunpeng Cheng,Jianfen Li

TETA or TETA-AEP mixtures were used as an activator to enhance CO2 capture in the MDEA solution. The effect of amount and type of activators, and the viscosity of absorbents on CO2 capture were discussed. The results showed that the positive effect of TETA-AEP mixtures on CO2 capture in the MDEA solution was greater than that of TETA. The optimal absorbent was No. V, whose CO2 absorption capacity/desorption efficiency was 3.08 times/1.18 times of No. І. The viscosity had a little influence on CO2 absorption and an obvious effect on CO2 desorption.

Preparation of “dry water”-type liquid marbles with enhanced mechanical stability and CO2 capture performance

Jian He,Yifan Liang,Wenting Xiang,Changjun Liu,Pan Wu,Wei Jiang

Liquid marbles(LMs) are formed by encapsulating liquid with hydrophobic particles showed potential application in capturing CO 2 . However, conventional LMs are mostly millimeter scale and easily deformed by extrusion. This study aimed to enhance the mechanical stability by controlling the particle size to prepare “dry water” type LMs (DWLMs). The N-methyldiethanolamine (MDEA) solution was used as the core in constructing DWLMs, and SiO 2 /graphene(GPE) was used as the shell material. The incorporation of GPE can endow DWLMs with photothermal conversion properties, with a particle size distribution around 100 ∼ 250 μm occupying the largest volume fraction. These DWLMs exhibited good flow ability and mechanical stability. Moreover, the effects of MDEA concentration, and content of SiO 2 / GPE on the preparation of DWLMs were investigated. Under an illumination intensity of 1 × 10 6 Lux, the temperature of DWLMs reached above 95 °C. Subsequently, the absorption performance was examined by a fixed-bed absorption tower, and it was found that decreasing the droplet size can increase the gas–liquid mass transfer area to reduce the mass transfer resistance. The height of the fixed bed constructed by DWLMs was higher than 7 cm, and the bottom particles can still maintain stability without agglomeration and blocking the supporting mesh. The breakthrough point (t 0.5 and t 0.95 ) of large-DWLMs (L-DWLMs) were greater than that of tiny-DWLMs (T-DWLMs). The absorption kinetics have validated that chemisorption is the primary mode of CO 2 absorption. In desorption process, the results showed that the desorption of CO 2 was realized by photothermic desorption, and the desorbed DWLMs were regenerated and recycled, which could prevent the corrosion of the device as well as utilize the energy provided by the sunlight.

The High Removal Efficiency of H2S by MDEA Solution in High-Jets Oscillating Purifier

Liang Ma,Yuting Zhang,Anlin Liu,Zhisheng Zhao,Liwang Wang,Yulong Chang,Xiaoxu Duan,Peng Gao

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is an extremely noxious impurity generated from industrial processes, but conventional absorption devices applied to remove H2S are often constrained by low mass transfer coefficients and large equipment volume. To overcome these limitations, we propose a novel high-jet oscillating purifier (HOP) and systematically investigate the key operational parameters that influence desulfurization performance when HOP is combined with a methyl diethanolamine (MDEA) solution. Experimental results demonstrated that H2S removal efficiency and mass transfer coefficients increased with absorption flow rate (0.06–0.12 m3/h), methyl diethanolamine concentration (0.8–3.2 wt %), and inlet H2S concentration (20–160 mg/m3), but decreased with methyl diethanolamine solution temperature (25–85 °C). Intriguingly, inlet gas flow rates (5 and 17 m3/h) improved removal efficiency but reduced mass transfer coefficients. Radial injection (α = 0°) of absorption liquid achieved optimal performance, yielding peak efficiency at 98.7%, surpassing nonradial injection (α = ±45°) by 12.3–15.8%. The mass transfer coefficients (KGa) at 0.0715 kmol·m–3·kPa–1·s–1, are about ten times higher than conventional devices. Semiempiric equation (R2 = 0.99, p < 0.001) was derived to predict KGa across operational conditions. The industrial application indicated that HOP achieved an average removal efficiency higher than 95.1% with only 1/8 of the device volume compared to conventional scrubbers. The study indicates that HOP combined with MDEA solution has great potential for application in removing H2S for industrial plants.
