Microbiologically induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP) is a new technique in environmental geotechnical engineering. Ultrafine particles including nanoparticles consisting of clay particles and organic matter present in the nanometer size range are ubiquitous in sand due to the erosion or chemical reactions of earth minerals. In this paper, nano-SiO 2 (NS) was used to represent nanoparticles and investigate the influence of nanoparticles in soil on MICP. Both MICP in a solution environment and MICP on the surface of quartz sand were investigated. Then, a series of macroscopic and microscopic tests were conducted to investigate the effect mechanism of NS on MICP. It was found that the NS could inhibit the MICP reaction process and promote calcite formation in a solution environment. Conversely, NS could inhibit calcite formation on the quartz sand surface. Besides, the main products of these two cases are quite different: the former is vaterite, while the latter is calcite. In general, the nanoscale silica particles are detrimental to MICP.

Mudstone found in open-pit coal mines is prone to softening, expansion, and disintegration when exposed to water, leading to deterioration of its mechanical properties and causing slope instability. To address this issue, this study introduced a novel slope stabilization method that integrates coal-based solid waste (fly ash) with microbially induced carbonate precipitation. The effects of fly ash (FA) and CaO (FC) and Bacillus subtilis (BS) contents on the cohesion ( c ), internal friction angle ( φ ), unconfined compressive strength ( q u ), elastic modulus ( E ), Poisson’s ratio ( μ ), disintegration resistance, and microstructural characteristics of mudstone were evaluated through unconfined compressive strength tests, direct shear tests, disintegration test, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The results showed that under optimal curing conditions, the growth rates of c , φ , q u , E , and μ of the treated mudstone sample improved by +251.46%, +53.86%, +134.1%, +66.3%, and −65.61%, respectively, compared with those of plain mudstone samples. Moreover, its resistance to disintegration upon contact with water could be extended from 72 h to 10 d. The curing mechanism primarily involved the activation of FA into calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H), calcium aluminate hydrate (C-A-H), Calcium Aluminum Silicate Hydrate (C-A-S-H), and microbially induced calcite (CaCO 3 ) precipitates. Under the action of an appropriate amount of curing agent, FC can provide an alkaline environment and nucleation sites for BS, making the calcium carbonate distribution more uniform. BS accelerates the catalysis of FC to form gelation products. Meanwhile, due to the continuous consumption of Ca 2+ and OH - , the equilibrium of the CaO dissolution shifts toward generating more Ca(OH) 2 , achieving a “three-way promotion” effect. On the contrary, these factors will inhibit each other due to the different rates of reaction output. The findings offer a viable solution for slope stability in open-pit coal mines and hold significance for safe mining, environmental protection, and sustainable use of coal-based solid waste.

Achieving structural homogeneity remains a key bottleneck for microbially induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) in coal-dust suppression. This study systematically investigates how injection rate and delivered reagent volume regulate MICP performance to balance wind- and rain-erosion resistance. Quantitative analysis reveals a clear trade-off arising from the interplay between fluid transport and reaction kinetics. High-rate injection triggers metastable, vaterite-rich surface clogging, reducing the wind-erosion ratio ( η wind ) to 4.2% while inducing pronounced vertical stratification. Conversely, low-rate injection promotes capillary-dominated, stable calcite bridging, thereby enhancing deep consolidation and reducing the rain-erosion ratio ( η rain ) to 8.4%. To mitigate bioclogging, we propose a graded mineralization strategy that integrates low-rate skeletal construction with high-rate surface armoring. The sequential protocol achieved a low η wind (≈ 4.0%) and reduced η rain to ≈ 9.1% compared with the high-rate case, indicating improved overall resilience under combined aeolian and rainfall stresses. The resulting functionally graded crusts offer a mechanistically grounded approach for dust suppression in complex mining environments.

Microbially induced calcite precipitation (MICP) is a promising technology for sand fixation, ground stabilisation, concrete crack repairment, and contaminated soil remediation. Sporosarcina pasteurii is the most used urease-producing bacterium for MICP applications. This study proposes a novel, cost-effective culture medium for S. pasteurii using corn-steep liquor as a cheaper nitrogen source, partially replacing the soybean peptone, decreasing the medium cost by 50.5 %. The optimal fermentation conditions were determined by single-factor experiments at a temperature of 30℃, an initial pH of 8.0, and an inoculation amount of 0.5 %. The optimal medium composition was determined by orthogonal experiments at 15 g/L soybean peptone, 30 g/L corn-steep liquor, 10 g/L urea, and 3 g/L sodium dihydrogen phosphate. As a carbon source, lactose was found to inhibit urease activity and should not be added. The novel medium increased the urease activity by 24.2 % and enhanced the unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of the MICP-treated sample to 2.39 MPa, which increased by 21.3 %. XRD analysis shows that calcite, the most stable crystal form of calcium carbonate, was formed in the samples. ESEM images show more calcium carbonate generated on the sample surface, and the cementation between sand particles was better. Therefore, this novel, cost-effective medium made the Sporosarcina pasteurii show satisfying MICP performance and alleviated economic concerns about the large-scale application of MICP.

Microbially induced carbonate precipitation (MICP), as an eco-friendly and promising technology that can transform free metal ions into stable precipitation, has been extensively used in remediation of heavy metal contamination. However, its depressed efficiency of heavy metal elimination remains in question due to the inhibition effect of heavy metal toxicity on bacterial activity. In this work, an efficient, low-cost manganese (Mn) elimination strategy by coupling MICP with chitosan biopolymer as an additive with reduced treatment time was suggested, optimized, and implemented. The influences of chitosan at different concentrations (0.01, 0.05, 0.10, 0.15 and 0.30 %, w/v) on bacterial growth, enzyme activity, Mn removal efficiency and microstructure properties of the resulting precipitation were investigated. Results showed that Mn content was reduced by 94.5 % within 12 h with 0.15 % chitosan addition through adsorption and biomineralization as MnCO 3 (at an initial Mn concentration of 3 mM), demonstrating a two-thirds decrease in remediation time compared to the chitosan-absent system, whereas maximum urease activity increased by ∼50 %. Microstructure analyses indicated that the mineralized precipitates were spherical-shaped MnCO 3 , and a smaller size and more uniform distribution of MnCO 3 is obtained by the regulation of abundant amino and hydroxyl groups in chitosan. These results demonstrate that chitosan accelerates nucleation and tunes the growth of MnCO 3 by providing nucleation sites for mineral formation and alleviating the toxicity of metal ions, which has the potential to upgrade MICP process in a sustainable and effective manner. This work provides a reference for further understanding of the biomineralization regulation mechanism, and gives a new perspective into the application of biopolymer-intensified strategies of MICP technology in heavy metal contamination.

Combining the Microbial-Induced Calcium Carbonate Precipitation (MICP) technique with plants to reinforce calcareous sand slopes on reef islands is expected to achieve both reinforcement and economic benefits. In this study, MICP was combined withFestuca arundinacea(MICP-FA) for calcareous sand reinforcement. Based on water retention and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) tests, the water retention performance and mechanism of MICP-reinforced calcareous sand under different cementation solution concentrations and cementation cycles were analyzed. The growth adaptability ofFestuca arundinaceawas evaluated under different bacteria solution concentrations, cementation solution concentrations and cementation cycles. The engineering applicability of MICP-FA-reinforced calcareous sand was evaluated by wind erosion tests, and the synergistic reinforcement mechanism was analyzed. The results show that with the increase in the cementation solution concentration and cementation cycles, more calcium carbonate filled and adhered to the calcareous sand particles, significantly improving the water retention performance. MICP-FA can enhance the wind erosion resistance of calcareous sand. This synergistic mechanism lies in the surface cementation effect of MICP and the deep anchoring effect of plant roots. This study provides theoretical basis and technical guidance for engineering applications in calcareous sand areas.

A simultaneous denitrifying and mineralizing bacterium, Pseudomonas sp. WZ39 was isolated for fluoride (F − ), nitrate (NO 3 − -N), and calcium (Ca 2+ ) removal. Strain WZ39 exhibited a remarkable defluoridation efficiency of 87.49% under a pH of 6.90, F − and Ca 2+ concentration of 1.99 and 201.88 mg L −1 , respectively. EEM, SEM–EDS, XRD, and FTIR analyses elucidated the chemical adsorption and co-precipitation with calcium salt contributed to the removal of F − . The mechanisms of biomineralization were also investigated by determining the role of bound and unbound extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), cell wall, and calcium channel in nucleation. The results showed that bacteria can promote nucleation on the templates of cell walls or EPS through the electrostatic effect. The presence of the calcium channel blocker inhibited the transport of intracellular Ca 2+ to the extracellular environment. The outcome of the present research can provide a theoretical basis for the understanding of MICP phenomenon and the efficient treatment of F − containing groundwater.

Microbial-induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP), with its hydrophilic rough microstructures and as an environmentally friendly material modification method, has shown great potential for oil-water separation. However, its efficiency in separating oil-in-water emulsions remains challenging. This study advances the MICP method by producing microbially induced nanoscale calcium carbonate on a mesh using calcium acetate instead of traditional calcium chloride, successfully achieving efficient separation of oil-in-water emulsions. The stainless-steel mesh (SSM) after calcium acetate-MICP treatment obtained nano-elliptical flake-like vaterite (vaterite-SSM) and demonstrated superior superhydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity compared to the mesh coated with micro-cubic structured calcite (calcite-SSM) treated by calcium chloride-MICP. Notably, vaterite-SSM achieved a flux of up to 309 L·m −2 ·h −1 and an oil rejection rate of over 98.7 % in gravity-driven separation of oil-in-water emulsions, demonstrating significant reusability after 6 cycles. Conversely, calcite-SSM was ineffective in emulsion separation due to coating instability and large particle spacing. Additionally, vaterite-SSM effectively separated various oil-water mixtures, maintaining high performance across 30 separation cycles. This study underscores the important use of calcium acetate in MICP to obtain nano-elliptical flake-like vaterite for efficient oil-water emulsion separation, advancing the promise of MICP as an effective and sustainable method for environmental applications.
