Efficient xylene isomers’ separation remains a challenge due to their similar kinetic diameter and boiling points, particularly for the separation of the immediate size of meta-xylene (MX). A metal–organic framework (MOF) membrane offers the opportunity to realize the isomers’ separation due to the highly tunable pore size and pore environment. Herein, an In-based hierarchic MOF (MIL-100) with a size of 0.77 nm was screened, aiming at the realization for isomer separation through pore size matching. Meanwhile, the polar microenvironment in the MOF channel built through trimesic acid ligands contributes to the higher affinity to the MX relative to the PX. With the equimolar feed mixture of MX/PX, the optimal membrane demonstrated a total flux of 7.6 kg·m−2·h−1and an MX/PX separation factor of 2.54 at room temperature through pervaporation. Such performance highly indicates the possibility for efficient liquid xylene separation in future.

Continuous and intergrown metal-organic framework (MOF) membranes, MIL-100(In) (MIL represents Materials Institute Lavoisier), were prepared directly on porous anodic alumina oxide (AAO) membranes using an in situ crystallization method. The pore surface of MIL-100(In) is conferred with polarity due to the presence of the 1, 3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid. The thickness of MIL-100(In) membranes was tuned by varying the reactant concentration of indium chloride and 1, 3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid. Single gas permeation measurements on this MOF membrane indicate the large permeances of 0.90 × 10 –6 and 0.81 × 10 –6 mol · m –2 ·s –1 ·Pa –1 for CO 2 and CH 4 , and relatively high ideal selective factors of 3.75 and 3.38 for CO 2 /N 2 and CH 4 /N 2 , respectively.

Eight silane coupling agents are grafted onto MIL-100(In) membranes for TOL/MCH pervaporation. • Cyclohexyl-configured silane with amine group enables superior TOL/MCH recognition. • Configurational effects maximize binding energy difference, boosting separation factor by 175%. • Two-stage process achieves flux of 402 g·m −2 ·h −1 and separation factor of 8.1. Hydrogen is recognized as a promising green energy carrier, yet its large-scale transportation remains a critical challenge. Toluene/methylcyclohexane (TOL/MCH) serves as a safe and cost-effective liquid organic hydrogen carrier (LOHC), but practical deployment is constrained by inefficient post-dehydrogenation separation. Membrane-based separation offers a potential solution; however, most existing membranes lack sufficient molecular discrimination capability for these two analogues. In this work, MIL-100(In), a metal-organic framework with intrinsic adsorption selectivity toward TOL and MCH, was selected as the membrane substrate. A series of silane coupling agents with and without amino functionality and varying molecular configurations were grafted onto the membrane surface. Remarkably, the three-dimensional saturated cyclohexyl configuration outperforms the planar phenyl group in molecular discrimination among the amino-bearing silanes, overturning the conventional preference for aromatic functionalities. As a result, the separation factor of the MIL-100(In) membrane is enhanced by 175% upon surface modification. Complementary molecular simulations reveal that the spatial configuration of the grafted silane governs the recognition behavior toward aromatic and cycloalkane molecules, as corroborated by binding energy analysis and the minimum intermolecular contact distances obtained from energy-minimized conformations. Selective hydrogenation of phenol to cyclohexanone is of great significance for the production of value-added chemical intermediates and products. Pd/MIL-100(Cr), featuring highly dispersed Pd nanoparticles (∼2.5 nm), were synthesized using a double-solvent impregnation method followed by NaBH4 reduction. During aqueous-phase phenol hydrogenation, the catalyst achieved full conversion with 98.3% selectivity toward cyclohexanone within 1 h at 0.1 MPa and 100 °C. The catalyst exhibited high stability, maintaining performance up to 5 cycles without deactivation. The Lewis acidity of MIL-100(Cr) significantly influenced the phenol hydrogenation selectivity. By incorporation of Al, V, and Ce species into the MIL-100(Cr) framework, cyclohexanone selectivity in phenol hydrogenation was found to increase with the amount of Lewis acid sites (LAS). The acid properties of the Pd/MIL-100 catalysts were investigated using NH3-TPD, pyridine-adsorbed FT-IR, and EPR probe molecules. The interaction between Pd nanoparticles and the coordinatively unsaturated sites from the trimeric clusters of MIL-100 was found to be crucial in determining the Lewis acidity of the Pd/MIL-100 catalysts. Demonstrating a synergistic effect between the Pd and LAS, Pd/MIL-100(Cr) emerges as a promising candidate for the selective hydrogenation of phenol to cyclohexanone.
