Degradation of tetracycline by a novel MIL-101(Fe)/TiO2 composite with persulfate

He Lei,Zhang Yaqin,Zheng Yane,Jia Qingming,Shan Shaoyun,Dong Yanan

An effective catalyst of MIL-101(Fe)/TiO 2 composite was synthesized by solvothermal method. The resultant MIL-101(Fe)/TiO 2 was used for advanced oxidation degradation of tetracycline (TC) for the first time. The results indicated that the MIL-101(Fe)/TiO 2 showed higher TC degradation efficiency than pure MIL-101(Fe) or TiO 2 with the persulfate. Using 1 g L −1 MIL-101(Fe)/TiO 2 and persulfate at pH 7, 90.15% degradation rate was achieved under xenon lamp irradiation in 5 min for 20 mg L −1 TC. TiO 2 introduced in the composite played an important role in the degradation process, in which TiO 2 had a synergetic effect with Fe 3+ to generate Fe 2+ , Ti 3+ and radicals. Fe 2+ reacted with persulfate to produce Fe 3+ and a number of · OH to degrade TC. This reaction process was so fast that MIL-101(Fe)/TiO 2 with persulfate could degrade TC fairly rapidly. A novel TiO 2 -based metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) composite was more efficient for degrading pharmaceutical wastewater.

MIL-101(Fe)@TiO2 nanotube composite material is used for the solid phase extraction of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs under the synergy of multiple interactions

Hongmei Liu,Shihao Dang,Mingdeng Li,Baogui Ye

Increasing the adsorption sites and effective interactions between sorbents and the targets can improve the solid-phase extraction (SPE) efficiency. Herein, based on the advantages of MOFs and TiO2 nanotubes (TiO2 NTs), an MIL-101(Fe)@TiO2 NT composite was prepared and applied to extract non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) from water samples coupled with high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Through characterization, it was established that MIL-101(Fe) was effectively composited on the surface and inside the TiO2 nanotubes, increasing effective adsorption sites. The obtained composite material well retains the structure and functional groups of the two original materials, and while retaining the original force with the target, it achieves a synergistic effect and produces more interactions with the target. Therefore, the extraction efficiency was greatly improved. The recovery efficiency reached 97.7–105.1% with an RSD of less than 6.71%, the detection limit was 0.1–0.2 μg L−1, and the linear range was 1–200 μg L−1 with a determination coefficient of 0.9972–0.9994. Owing to the stability of the two original materials, the composite material could be recycled and reused to extract NSAIDs up to 15 times without a loss of the recovery rate. Satisfactory results were obtained when it was used to extract NSAIDs from the Yellow River. These results indicate that the synthesized MIL-101(Fe)@TiO2 NT material is a promising sorbent to extract NSAIDs at trace concentrations with high efficiency and long lifetimes.

Green removal of ethylene with composite photocatalyst MIL101(Fe)/TiO2 with different molecular structure

Hanmin Zhong,Xiaoying Ye,Xueting Xie,Xianliang Song,Shucan Luo,Wenbei Situ

With the large surface area and excellent adsorption properties of MIL-101(Fe), MIL-101(Fe)/TiO 2 photocatalysts were prepared by chemical method and physical method in this research, respectively. The photocatalysts' performance on ethylene degradation was evaluated, and the photocatalyst prepared using the chemical method (CH-MT) performed better than that by physical method (PHY-MT) under the same conditions. Moreover, the photocatalysts' molecular structure was characterized by XRD, FTIR, UV–Vis DRS, BET, and XPS. The redox process of Ti 4+ /Ti 3+ of TiO 2 and Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ effectively prevents the complexation of e − -h + pairs. In this cycle, the oxidatively active substance (∙O 2 - ) is provided, which plays a key role in the ethylene degradation of MIL-101(Fe)/TiO 2 photocatalysts. Furthermore, in the BET analysis, CH-MT's specific surface area and pore volume were smaller than PHY-MT's, which improved ethylene absorption, enhanced the transfer of photogenerated carriers, and raised the photocatalytic reaction efficiency of CH-MT. The differences between MIL-101(Fe)/TiO 2 photocatalysts prepared by various methods were investigated and discussed, providing a new approach for MOF materials' application in agricultural areas.

Coating TiO2 with MIL-101(Fe) to decarboxylate D-Glu and D-MeAsp of microcystin-LR from HA-rich water: Diminishing the inhibitory effect of humic acids

Yarui Wang,Chengzhuo Yu,Sen Wang,Jin Xu,Fanglan Geng,Silong Wang,Jitao Lv,Lixia Zhao,Yawei Wang

Humic acids (HA) released during algal bloom poses a key challenge for efficient photocatalytic degradation of Microcystin-LR (MC-LR) due to their scavenging function on active species. Herein, MIL-101(Fe)/TiO 2 -P25 (M/P) was constructed to diminish the inhibitory effect of HA on the photocatalytic degradation of MC-LR. Results showed that MC-LR could be efficiently removed assigning to the photogenerated holes (h + ) and superoxide radical (O 2 •− ) oxidation under visible light irradiation, where the carboxy groups of D -glutamic acid (Glu) and methyl- D -aspartic acid (MeAsp), and Adda side chain related to MC-LR biotoxicity were selectively destroyed to achieve MC-LR detoxication. More importantly, HA exerted non-inhibitory effect on MC-LR removal by M/P. The counteracting mechanisms were studied. Firstly, the location of TiO 2 in the pore structure of MIL-101(Fe) could occupy the adsorption sites of HA, and decrease the HA adsorption on M/P. Furthermore, XPS analyses suggested the coordination of unsaturated Fe metal sites on the surface of M/P hybrids complexed with –OH and –COOH of HA, which could accelerate the electron transfer and reduce hole consumption. Thus, the inhibitory effect of HA was alleviated during photocatalytic MC-LR treatment. This work offers a possible way to remove MC-LR in an abundant HA matrix water system efficiently.

A novel magnetic MIL-101(Fe)/TiO2 composite for photo degradation of tetracycline under solar light

Lei He,Yanan Dong,Yane Zheng,Qingming Jia,Shaoyun Shan,Yaqin Zhang

A novel magnetic MIL-101(Fe)/TiO 2 composite was synthesized for photo degradation of tetracycline (TC) under solar light. The composite was characterized by XRD, TGA, SEM, TEM, EDS, BET, FTIR, XPS, VSM, ESR, and PL. The resultant composite was environment friendly material, which exhibited high TC degradation efficiency and excellent reusability. In the meantime, it could be separated easily from TC solution by using magnet, which would save significant time and cost of preparation and degradation, having broad prospect in application. Using 1 g L −1 magnetic MIL-101(Fe)/TiO 2 at pH = 7, 92.76% degradation efficiency was achieved under solar light irradiation in 10 min for 20 mg L −1 TC. Further experiments indicated that TiO 2 introduced in the composite played an important role in the degradation process, which could be activated by the UV light in solar light to generate large amount of O 2 − and OH radicals. The degradation efficiency of TC in this paper was significantly higher than other research papers reported in last three years. This study put forward new magnetic Fe-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)/TiO 2 composite for degrading pharmaceutical wastewater.
