Developing functional catalysts with both Lewis and Brønsted acid sites is an essential task for achieving the direct conversion of glucose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF), a process that is crucial for the sustainable production of renewable fuels and chemicals. In this work, a mixed-linker strategy is proposed to prepare defective MIL-53(Al)-NH 2 by introducing trifluoroacetic acid into the MIL-53(Al)-NH 2 synthesis process. The creation of defects facilitates the exposure and accessibility of Al 3+ centers, as well as changes the coordination environment within the MIL-53(Al)-NH 2 skeleton. Both the number of Lewis and Brønsted acid sites are boosted, which is beneficial for glucose activation and 5-HMF generation. Through optimizing the reaction conditions, a glucose conversion of 98.3 % with a 5-HMF yield of 59.3 % was achieved by using defective 6d-MIL-53(Al)-NH 2 in a biphasic tetrahydrofuran/H 2 O NaCl system. Moreover, the 6d-MIL-53(Al)-NH 2 catalyst showed excellent recyclability and reusability, with its catalytic efficiency maintained almost unchanged for consecutive 10 cycles. The catalytic mechanism was elucidated and the acidity of the Lewis and Brønsted acid was modulated by defect engineering to achieve exceptional performance.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) hold significant potential for sample preparation, but single-MOF materials often face limitations in selectivity and extraction efficiency. To overcome these, a mesoporous MIL-53(Al)–NH 2 @UiO-66 composites with a core–shell structure was synthesized using an epitaxial growth strategy. This composite leverages the complementary properties of both MOFs, offering enhanced active sites and interaction forces for analytes. The structure and integration of the composite were characterized using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction, confirming their successful integration. To address the challenge of detecting alkylphenols (APs) in food matrices, known for their endocrine-disrupting properties and low concentrations, a new solid-phase microextraction (SPME) Arrow was fabricated using the MIL-53(Al)–NH 2 @UiO-66 composite combined with polyacrylonitrile as a binder. APs were detected using ultra-performance liquid chromatography and quadrupole time-of-flight tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-ESI-Q-ToF/MS). The developed SPME Arrow-UPLC-ESI-Q-ToF/MS method exhibits good linearity (R 2 ≥ 0.9958), wide linear range (0.01–1000 μg L –1 ), and high sensitivity (limits of detection ranging from 0.005 to 0.01 μg L –1 ) for APs determination. This method was validated for determining nine APs in milk samples from various packing materials, with spiked recoveries ranging from 85.2 % to 115 % and relative standard deviations from 3.4 % to 13.6 %. This study demonstrates the potential of MOF-on-MOF composites in enhancing the performance of adsorbents for SPME pretreatment, offering a promising approach for improving analytical methodologies in food safety.

The efficient transformation of glucose into 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) is crucial for sustainable bio-refinery processes, but achieving high production efficiency remains challenging. In this study, we presented the preparation of Al-containing metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), specifically MIL-53(Al), MIL-53(Al)-NO2, and MIL-53(Al)-NH2, using different ligands as catalysts to enhance the production of 5-HMF from glucose. Comprehensive characterization provided valuable insights into the properties of the synthesized MOFs. The synthesized MOFs exhibited varied MIL-53(Al) states, morphologies, and thermal stabilities based on the different ligands employed, which in turn affected their catalytic performance. Among the Al-containing MOFs synthesized, MIL-53(Al)-NH2 demonstrated remarkable catalytic capabilities for the conversion of glucose to 5-HMF. This MOF achieved an impressive 5-HMF yield of 53% and a reaction selectivity of 54%. The catalytic efficiency was further enhanced by leveraging the synergistic effect of MIL-53(Al)-NH2 in combination with Amberlyst-36, resulting in a 5-HMF yield of 59% and a reaction selectivity of 60%.

It is imperative to exploit simple and rapid methods for the detection of total iron in foods to ensure food quality and human health. Herein, we construct the MIL-53(Al)-NH 2 -MPA nanosensor synthesized by post-synthetic modification process for fluorescent detection of total iron in food matrix. The nanosensor emits intense blue fluorescence with excellent stability. The fluorescence can be efficiently quenched by Fe(III) due to the fact that Fe(III) can preferentially bind with O-quinone bands or –NH 2 of MIL-53(Al)-NH 2 -MPA to form strong coordination complex, and that the heteroatoms (N, O and S) in MIL-53(Al)-NH 2 -MPA can donate lone-pair electrons to Fe(III) to promote the electron transfer. Moreover, the competitive absorption of excitation energy of MIL-53(Al)-NH 2 -MPA by Fe(III) endows the nanosensor with superior sensitivity. The fluorescent sensor exhibits excellent anti-interference performances toward other metal ions, and reveals a LOD of 0.36 μM with the broad linear range of 0–110 μM for the detection of Fe(III). Satisfactory recoveries of 92.90–112.70% with RSDs of 0.54–2.48% have been achieved in water and food samples, which are well agreement with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) (P > 0.05), indicating that MIL-53(Al)-NH 2 -MPA is applicable for detecting total iron in food matrix.
