Pixelating Responsive Structural Color via a Bioinspired Morphable Concavity Array (MoCA) Composed of 2D Photonic Crystal Elastomer Actuators

Yi Pan,Chang Li,Xiaoyu Hou,Zhenyu Yang,Mingzhu Li,Ho Cheung Shum

Stimuli-responsive structural coloration allows the color change of soft substrates in response to environmental stimuli such as heat, humidity, and solvents. Such color-changing systems enable smart soft devices, such as the camouflageable skin of soft robots or chromatic sensors in wearable devices. However, individually and independently programmable stimuli-responsive color pixels remain significant challenges among the existing color-changing soft materials and devices, which are crucial for dynamic display. Inspired by the dual-color concavities on butterfly wings, a morphable concavity array to pixelate the structural color of two-dimensional photonic crystal elastomer and achieve individually and independently addressable stimuli-responsive color pixels is designed. The morphable concavity can convert its surface between concave and flat upon changes in the solvent and temperature, accompanied by angle-dependent color-shifting. Through multichannel microfluidics, the color of each concavity can be controllably switched. Based on the system, the dynamic display by forming reversibly editable letters and patterns for anti-counterfeiting and encryption are demonstrated. It is believed that the strategy of pixelating optical properties through locally altering surface topography can inspire the design of new transformable optical devices, such as artificial compound eyes or crystalline lenses for biomimetic and robotic applications.

MOCA-Based Poly(Urethane–Urea) Elastomers With High Stretchability, Strength, and Self-Healing via Synergistic Dynamic Bonds

Xiangrong Zheng,Junqing Li,Lindan Gong,Yihao Guo,Aohui Qin,Zelin Zhu,Guanyu Di,Yining Huang,Xingbao Gao,Lu-an Fan

Simultaneously achieving high strength and efficient self-healing in a single material remains a fundamental challenge in the field of elastomeric materials. In this study, self-healing poly(urethane-urea) (PU) elastomers were successfully prepared through the strategic incorporation of both rigid MOCA (4,4'-methylenebis(2-chloroaniline)) structures and thermo-reversible oxime-urethane bonds into the main chains, coupled with dynamic zinc-ion coordination. Due to the synergistic interactions among hydrogen bonding networks, oxime-amino ester bonds, and metal-ligand bonds, PU elastomers exhibited high tensile strength (8.07 MPa), elongation at break (771.72%), and healing efficiency (92.29%). Moreover, an excessively high content of MOCA can lead to a transition from hydrophilic to a hydrophobic state. With the exceptional performance, PU materials demonstrated strong potential for practical implementation in protective coatings, flexible electronic substrates, stimuli-responsive thin films, and related advanced functional material systems.

Low-Loading Silane-Modified SiO2-Reinforced MOCA-Based Cast Polyurethane Elastomers: Enhanced Wear Resistance and Mechanical Performance

Heng Li,Dongwei Chu,Mingming Zhou,Huiyu Zhao,Jiule Gong,Lange Li,Wei Zhao,Jingjiang Sun,Qingfu Wang

4,4′-Diaminodiphenylmethane (MOCA)-based cast polyurethane (CPU) elastomers possess excellent mechanical properties but often exhibit insufficient wear resistance under high-load or abrasive conditions. To address this, surface-modified silica nanoparticles (D-SiO 2 ) were prepared using (N, N-dimethyl-3-aminopropyl)trimethoxysilane (DAPS) and incorporated into the CPU matrix via a solvent-assisted casting method. The introduced tertiary amine and organic groups on D-SiO 2 facilitated covalent bonding and hydrogen bonding with the CPU, significantly enhancing interfacial compatibility and dispersion uniformity. At an optimal loading of 0.3 wt%, the composite achieved a remarkable tensile strength of 59.1 MPa and an elongation at break of 394.75%, representing a substantial improvement over the neat CPU (44.2 MPa, 376.33%). Furthermore, the wear resistance was notably enhanced, with the abrasion volume reduced by 34% compared to the unfilled system, while the friction coefficient remained stable. This work demonstrates that low-loading, surface-modified silica can effectively reinforce MOCA-based CPUs, offering a viable strategy for developing high-performance MOCA-based CPU elastomers.

A flexible method for changing the transition temperature of polyurethane solid–solid phase change materials

Shi Wenshuo,Wei Kun,Fan Yuzhe,Wang Xiaoqing,Shi Jiahao,Wang Sifan,Cheng Peng

Transition temperature is significant in determining applications of phase change materials. In this paper, PEG2000 and PEG4000 were used as soft segments and MDI and 3,3ʹ-Dichloro-4,4ʹ-diaminodiphenylmethane (MOCA) were used as hard segments. Several polyurethane solid–solid phase change materials (PUSSPCMs) were synthesized by adjusting the mass ratio of PEG4000 and PEG2000. Based on the differential scanning calorimeter test, this paper studied the relationship between the mass ratio of PEG2000 and the phase transition temperature. The influence mechanism of phase change temperature was revealed from molecular structure, crystallization properties, and surface morphology. Furthermore, PUSSPCMs were tested for leakage and the thermal stability. The results showed that the synthesized PUSSPCMs had no liquid leakage during the heating process. There was a good linear relationship between the mass ratio of PEG2000 and phase transition temperature. The thermal decomposition onset temperature was above 230 °C.

Confined crystallization and degradation of six-arm star PCL with core of cyclotriphosphazene in epoxy thermosets

Pengli Zhang,Yanfang Zhao,Rentong Yu,Jianhe Liao

Six-arm star polycaprolactone with core of cyclotriphosphazene ( s -PCL) was synthesized via ring-opening polymerization and characterized by NMR and GPC . Epoxy thermosets incorporating 10–40  wt % of this copolymer were cured with 4,4′-methylenebis(2-chloroaniline) (MOCA) and 4,4′-diaminodiphenyl sulfone (DDS), respectively. In these thermosets, intermolecular specific interactions had a significant impact on their morphologies. Specifically, no discernable macroscopic phase separation was found in FESEM images of MOCA-cured epoxy resins . However, for the DDS-cured system, s -PCL was partially miscible with the epoxy thermosets, as evidenced with FTIR and DMA. This is may be owning to enriched concentration of hydroxyl groups in the s -PCL favored the miscibility between PCL subchains of carbonyl and the epoxy matrix. Dispersed phase, further confirmed by XRD to be amorphous , with a diameter of 0.34–0.44 μm could be observed ( s -PCL’ content ≤ 20  wt %) in this system. Nevertheless, crystallization of PCL could not be suppressed completely ( s -PCL’ content > 30  wt %). Besides, epoxy thermosets containing crystalline PCL were found to be more resistant to thermal degradation but sensitive to alkaline degradation (10% NaOH aqueous solution) according to TGA and FESEM results. This work presented here is a meaningful report on the presence of alkaline-labile crosslinking points through the whole networks.
