MOF-Fe@C Nanocomposites for Microwave Absorption

Rongjuan Zhang,Qi Hu,Shaobo Yang,Song Yan,Yaxin Gu,Jiawei Ji,Zheng Zhou,Chaoze Liu,Xinran Li,Zihao Wang,Chengchun Tang

The arrival of the 5 G era has brought great benefits to our lives, but it has also brought problems such as electromagnetic radiation. Therefore, the demand for lightweight, high-performance microwave absorbing materials with wide effective bandwidth is increasing. Herein, MIL-53/g-C 3 N 4 is first synthesized from precursors of ferric chloride, terephthalic acid, and g-C 3 N 4 , and then thermally annealed at different temperatures to generate MOF-Fe@C nanocomposites. Heat treatment can effectively carbonize g-C 3 N 4 to amorphous carbon and reduce iron in MIL-53 to magnetic Fe and Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles through carbon-thermal reduction reaction. The synergistic effect of dielectric loss of amorphous carbon and magnetic losses of magnetic particles enhances attenuation and improves impedance matching, enhancing microwave absorption. The RL min of MOF-Fe@C(4)-700 is as low as -72.78 dB at 9.44 GHz at a thickness of 3.18 mm and its effective absorption bandwidth is as broad as 4.88 GHz, covering most of X-band frequency range. The research introduces a novel technique for synthesizing absorbers with controllable electromagnetic characteristics by incorporating g-C 3 N 4 as carbon sources into MOF materials.

S2−-modified Hetero MOF-on-MOF of Ni-MOF/Fe-MOF with Efficient Seawater Oxidation Performance

Haifeng Ru,Yanji Bao,Yifeng Wang,Xiaohong Wang,Jinchun Tu,Qiang Wu,Yi Li,Lei Ding

Direct seawater electrolysis offers a viable solution to the excessive consumption of fresh water resources in existing industrial electrolytic water processes. However, electrolysis efficiency and material stability are affected by electrode material corrosion caused by chlorine evolution reactions (CER) at the anode positions. In this study, the prepared S-Ni-MOF/Fe-MOF material exhibits an exceptional performance in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) both in alkaline solution and seawater. Specifically, the material achieves low overpotentials of 281 and 279   mV in 1.0   M KOH and alkaline seawater at 100   mA   cm −2 current density, and maintains stability for at least 100   h in both electrolyte solutions. The electronic structure of MOF-on-MOF was modulated through the introduction of S 2− , which induced a large number of vacancies. Furthermore, the reconstruction process on the material surface was accelerated by the formation of NiOOH and FeOOH, that served as protective layers and prevented the corrosion of the electrode material by Cl − , thereby enhancing its stability in seawater. Furthermore, computational studies have indicated that the Fe-Ni active sites at the heterointerface exhibit a synergistic effect, which has been confirmed by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. These results prove that this combination significantly reduces the energy barrier associated with the OER. Consequently, the reaction process is accelerated.

Robust and sensitive colorimetric detection of glutathione with double-triggering MOF-Fe(DTNB)

Kaining Zhang,Hao Sun,Long Wei,Rui Hu,Hao Liu,Yongchao Lai,Xun Li

Glutathione (GSH) levels have been well validated to correlate with a variety of physiological and pathological conditions, such as malignancy, cardiovascular disease and aging, making the development of accurate, robust and sensitive GSH detection methods highly desirable. In this study, a novel metal–organic framework (MOF-Fe(DTNB))-based colorimetric method with a favorable dual-triggering function was proposed. MOF-Fe(DTNB) exhibits high peroxidase activity, which can catalyze the oxidation of colorless 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to blue ox-TMB by hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ). This oxidation process of TMB can be inhibited not only by the reducing action of GSH, but also by the thiol exchange reaction between DTNB and GSH, in which the disulfide bond of DTNB in MOF-Fe(DTNB) is cleaved. Thus, with this dual triggering mechanism, the GSH concentration can be robustly measured in the MOF-Fe(DTNB)-derived colorimetric strategy. Significantly, this method is accurate (RSD < 6 %), selective and sensitive in biological plasma samples, with satisfactory recovery rates (96.7–103.3 %). It requires less instrumentation and has less interference from other substances. The linear range of the method is 0–80 µM, and the detection limit is as low as 0.28 µM. This dual-triggering MOF-Fe(DTNB)-derived colorimetric strategy has greatly simplified the GSH detection processes with improved accuracy, in both acidic and basic environments, which has potent applications in biochemical analysis and point-of-care testing.

Preparation of MOF(Fe) and its catalytic activity for oxygen reduction reaction in an alkaline electrolyte

Guoqiang Song,Zhiqing Wang,Liang Wang,Guoru Li,Minjian Huang,Fengxiang Yin

Effective bifunctional catalysts play a vital role in large-scale commercial applications of rechargeable lithium-air batteries. In this article, a metal-organic framework, MOF(Fe), was prepared by a hydrothermal process using ferric nitrate as the metal ion precursor and trimesic acid as an organic ligand. The structure of the MOF(Fe) was characterized by X-ray diffraction, N 2 adsorption-desorption, Transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and Thermo-gravimetric analysis. The activity for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and the kinetic behavior of the ORR using the MOF(Fe) were investigated by cyclic voltammetry and rotating disk electrode voltammetry, respectively, using an alkaline electrolyte. The characterization results showed that the MOF(Fe) was highly crystalline with abundant micropores, large specific surface area and high thermal stability. The MOF(Fe) exhibited excellent catalytic activity for the ORR. The ORR mechanism varies with the applied potentials. The ORR occurs through a two-electron pathway at potentials in the range of −0.30 to −0.50 V, but shifts to four-electron pathway with the potentials in the range −0.50 to −0.95 V. In addition, the MOF(Fe) shows excellent catalytic activity for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in an alkaline electrolyte. This work opens a new route for the development of effective non-precious metal catalysts based on MOFs for the ORR and OER.

MOF(Fe)-derived composites as a unique nanoplatform for chemo-photodynamic tumor therapy

Zhimin Mo,Xinyuan Pan,Xiaoli Pan,Lin Ye,Han Hu,Qi Xu,Xiaoxi Hu,Zushun Xu,Jie Xiong,Guangfu Liao,Shengli Yang

Fe-based metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) can be used for chemodynamic therapy (CDT) for tumors due to their unique Fenton-like effects and porous and biodegradable nature. The adsorption and transport of small molecule drugs by their structure has attracted much attention. Herein, MnO2@NH2-MIL101(Fe)@Ce6-F127 nanoparticles (MNMCF NPs) were synthesized using a facile solvothermal strategy. The small molecule photosensitizer Ce6 was adsorbed by MOFs to improve the biocompatibility of Ce6 and give it high bioavailability when injected intravenously. When the MNMCF NPs reached the tumor site, Fe-based MOFs exhibited Fenton-like properties, producing ˙OH and showing CDT effects. MnO2 could specifically respond to produce O2 in a tumor microenvironment, thereby improving the tumor hypoxia state and enhancing the efficacy of photodynamic therapy (PDT) by Ce6. Both the in vitro and in vivo experiments showed that the MNMCF-guided CDT/PDT combination therapy could effectively ablate tumors without the drawbacks of poor tolerability and potential long-term side effects. Therefore, the prepared MNMCF NPs can be used as promising candidates for synergistic CDT/PDT tumor therapy.

Electrochemical activation of persulfate for degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride based on Pt@MOF(Fe)/NF cathode

Feng Zhang,Xiaodong Zhang,Pengyu Han,Jiali Cui,Chaoxu Wang,Qibin Chen

In this study, Pt@MOF(Fe)/NF, which was successfully employed as the cathode in the investigation of electrochemical activation of persulfate (PDS) for degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH), was successfully prepared by loading Fe-MOF and Pt on NF substrate using hydrothermal method. The loading of Fe-MOF and Pt increases the active site as well as the charge transfer ability, endowing the materials with high catalytic activity. The results revealed a synergistic reinforcing effect in the electrochemical activation of PDS, and the strong oxidizing substances generated by the activation of PDS on the cathode surface facilitated the degradation of TCH. The main active substances are SO 4 − . and OH . , primarily ·OH. The optimal degradation conditions include a current density of 20 mA/cm 2 , an initial concentration of PDS of 5 mmol/L, and an initial pH of 7. The degradation rate of TCH in the activation of PDS based on Pt@MOF(Fe)/NF reached 77.2 % after 120 mins of degradation under the optimal conditions, 32.7 % higher than that of the NF cathode system. In the degradation process of TCH, its characteristic functional groups are attacked and destroyed by active substances such as SO 4 − . and OH . , producing intermediates with structures similar to TCH, followed by further mineralization.

Preparation, characterization and bifunctional catalytic properties of MOF(Fe/Co) catalyst for oxygen reduction/evolution reactions in alkaline electrolyte

Hao Wang,Fengxiang Yin,Guoru Li,Biaohua Chen,Zhiqing Wang

A mixed metal–ion metal–organic framework (MOF(Fe/Co)) was synthesized by a hydrothermal process using ferric and cobalt salts as the metal–ion precursors and trimesic acid as the organic ligand. The structure of the as-prepared MOF(Fe/Co) was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), N 2 adsorption–desorption, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and thermogravimetry/differential thermogravimetry (TG/DTG). The bifunctional catalytic activities of MOF(Fe/Co) toward the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in alkaline electrolyte were investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and linear sweep voltammetry (LSV). The results demonstrate that the as-prepared MOF(Fe/Co) has a good crystalline structure with abundant micropores , a high specific surface area and a high thermal stability. The MOF(Fe/Co) exhibits excellent bifunctional catalytic activities for OER and ORR. The high specific surface area and abundant micropores are beneficial for oxygen diffusion and catalytic sites utilization in the catalyst, which is favorable for the OER and ORR. The RDE results for MOF(Fe/Co)-catalyzed ORR indicate that the two-electron pathway was preferred at relatively positive potentials, whereas the four-electron pathway gradually dominated at more negative potentials.

A cascade-reaction enabled synergistic cancer starvation/ROS-mediated/chemo-therapy with an enzyme modified Fe-based MOF

Zongjun Liu,Tuo Li,Fang Han,You Wang,Yang Gan,Junhui Shi,Tianran Wang,Muhammad Luqman Akhtar,Yu Li

Synergistic cancer starvation/ROS-mediated/chemo-therapy is developed through a cascade reaction with enzyme glucose oxidase (GOX) modified on the surface of an Fe-based metal organic framework (MOF(Fe)) and drug camptothecin (CPT) loaded into the cavities of MOF(Fe). Once internalized by tumor cells, GOX catalyzes endogenous glucose into hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and gluconic acid (H+) enabling starvation therapy through choking off energy (glucose) supply. Meanwhile, the acidic micro-environment of tumor enhanced by the generated H+ degrades the MOF(Fe) simultaneously releasing CPT for chemotherapy and Fe3+, catalyzing H2O2 into one of the strongest reactive oxygen species (ROS) ˙OH enabling ROS-mediated therapy. Both in vitro and in vivo results show remarkable tri-modal synergistic anticancer effects. This work may shed some light on the development of novel multi-modal cancer therapies without any external intervention.

Integrating MOF-Based Catalysis with Nanocavity-Confined Pd Catalysis over Multifunctional Pd-MOF-Fe for Acceptorless Dehydrogenation of Alcohols under Visible Light

Shiqin Lai,Zhibing Kang,Lie-Yuan Zhang,Dengke Wang,Lanqing Deng,Jian-Ping Zou

Graphical Ultrafine Pd nanoparticles (1.41 nm)-embedded MIL-100(Fe) (Pd-MOF-Fe) nanocomposites are synthesized via a double-solvent impregnation integrated with photo-reduction approach. Coupling MOF-based catalysis with Pd-based catalysis, the resultant Pd-MOF-Fe shows excellent catalytic efficiency and high stability toward visible-light-induced dehydrogenation of alcohols to hydrogen evolution and value-added carbonyl chemical production. Solar-driven hydrogen (H 2 ) evolution combined with synchronously selective oxidation for fine chemicals production is of great significance in energy and synthetic chemistry. Herein, ultrafine Pd nanoparticles-encapsulated MIL-100(Fe) (Pd-MOF-Fe) nanocomposites are synthesized through double-solvent impregnation integrated with photo-reduction method. Integrating MOF-based catalysis and Pd-based catalysis, the Pd-MOF-Fe can serve as multifunctional catalyst for photoinduced alcohol dehydrogenation reaction. Optimal generation rates of H 2 (3.61 mmol g −1 h −1 ) and benzaldehyde (3.40 mmol g −1 h −1 ) are gained over Pd-MOF-Fe, ca. 4.1 times that of the Pd/MOF-Fe, in which Pd crystals with size ranging from 3 to 6 nm are immobilized on the intersurface of MOFs. Besides, controlled experiments reveal the pivotal role of the opened FeO 6 nodes of MIL-100(Fe) as Lewis acid sites toward alcohol activation. This work provides a controllable approach for metal nanoparticle immobilization. Furthermore, considering the diversified MOF structures, this study also highlights the infinite possibility of metal nanoparticle/MOFs as multifunctional platform for solar energy conversion and chemicals production.

2D MOF@Fe₃O₄@rGO as magnetic solid-phase extraction and supercritical fluids chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry quantification of strigolactones stereoisomers in rice (Oryza sativa L.)

Xunzhi Deng,Qinyao Li,Jing Lu,Yilin Liu,Haiou Li,Ze Liao,Gang Huang,Langtao Xiao,Zhoufei Luo

Strigolactones (SLs) are novel plant hormones that play crucial roles in regulating plant growth and development. The stereoisomers of SLs often exhibit distinct biological activities, making their chiral separation and analysis essential for understanding their regulatory roles in plant branching. This study focused on the chiral separation and characterization of SL stereoisomers, including GR24 (synthetic) and strigol (natural). A magnetic nanocomposite (Ni₃(HITP)₂@Fe₃O₄@rGO) was synthesized for SL extraction, combined with SFC-MS/MS for precise separation and quantification. The method exhibited excellent linearity (0.2–50 ng/mL), minimal matrix effects (1.64–2.17 %), and low detection limits (1.93–3.76 pg/mL). Recoveries ranged from 86.90 % to 106.37 % with RSDs of 2.56 %–13.54 %. Under nitrogen and phosphorus stress, only (+)-strigol was detected in the roots of Oryza sativa L., suggesting its regulatory role under stress conditions. This reliable method provides robust support for exploring the physiological roles of SL stereoisomers in plants, shedding light on their functions in stress response and development.
