SCPEEK@MOF proton exchange membranes, where SCPEEK is sulfinyl chloride polyether ether ketone and MOF is a metal–organic framework, were prepared by doping Fe-MIL-101-NH2 into polymers. The amino group in the MOF and the -SOCl2 group in thionyl chloride polyether ether ketone cross-link to form a covalent bond through the Hinsberg reaction, and the prepared composite membrane has stronger stability than other electrostatic interactions and simple physical doping composite membranes. The formation of covalent bonds improves the water absorption of the composite membrane, which makes it easy for water molecules to form hydrogen bonds. Moreover, SPEEK as a proton conductive polymer and the synergy of MOFs improve the proton conductivity of composite membranes. The composite membranes were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy. The swelling rate, water absorption, mechanical stability, ion exchange capacity, and proton conductivity of the pure sulfonated polyether ether ketone (SPEEK) membrane were compared with those of the mechanically doped SPEEK/MOF membrane and the composite membrane SCPEEK@MOF doped with different ratios of Fe-MIL-101-NH2, and all of the SCPEEK@MOF showed superior performance. When the Fe-MIL-101-NH2 loading rate of the composite membrane is 2%, the proton conductivity of the composite membrane can reach 0.202 S cm–1 at 363 K and a 98% relative humidity, which is much higher than that of the SPEEK/MOF membrane obtained by simple physical doping under the same conditions.

Advanced ion transportation channels aided by charge and suitable aperture play a crucial role in achieving precise separation of ions. Here, we report a MOF composite membrane with electropositive surface and sub-nanometer-sized ion transport channels for efficient Li + /Mg 2+ separation. The membranes were fabricated using MOF “porous monomers” and trimesoyl chloride (TMC) through interfacial polymerization, and subsequently modified with amino-functionalized polyethyleneimine (PEI). The abundant porosity of the MOFs composite membrane includes the inner and the intergranular pores of MOF provided a rapid transport channel for Li + ions, and a superior Li + permeation rate of 0.68 mol m −2 h −1 (a 10 times enhancement compared to the currently leading MOF membranes). Moreover, the improved positively charged surface (from −78 mV to + 4 mV at pH = 7) and reduced mean pore diameter (from 1.13 nm to 0.8 nm) of the membrane caused a remarkable selectivity of 13.2 for Li + /Mg 2+ . The design concept of the above MOFs based membrane provides a novel approach for developing high-quality MOF composite membranes for improving Li + /Mg 2+ separation performance.

As conventional water purification technologies are inefficient, they put us at risk of exposure to emerging micropollutants. Here, we report a two-step method for rapid construction of a stable enzyme@MOF biomimetic membrane comprising enzyme-embedded metal–organic framework-based biocomposites for continuous and efficient removal of micropollutants from water. We first prepared a horseradish peroxidase@zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (HRP@ZIF-8) biocomposite via ball-milling method, capable of preserving structural integrity and the entrapped enzyme bioactivity under different denaturing environments. The second step involves biocomposite membrane synthesis via stimulation of polydopamine (PDA) polymerization with UV light after successively dispersing the dopamine and HRP@ZIF-8 biocomposite molecules in a neutral pH Tris-HCl system. Accompanied by the clever codeposition with PDA, the HRP@ZIF-8 biocomposite can be “sandwiched” between the PDA layers to create a stable HRP@ZIF-8-composite membrane (HRP@ZIF-8-CM). HRP@ZIF-8-CM synergistically integrates MOF adsorption, enzyme catalysis, and membrane separation functions. The calculated encapsulation rate of the HRP@ZIF-8 biocomposite is ≤ 98.2 %. The enzyme@MOF composite membrane has a catalytic degradation efficiency of 98 % for bisphenol A (1 mg/L), membrane water flux of 32.3 L/m 2 h bar, outstanding stability, and high efficiency after 7 cycles of use. Surprisingly, the bisphenol A removal rate of the enzyme@MOF composite membrane remained stable under varying denaturing conditions, including wide pH and temperature ranges and proteolytic enzymes, indicating that HRP enzyme activity is well preserved, probably owing to the bio-inertness of ZIF-8. In conclusion, we propose a new, simple, and fast method for the constructing enzyme@MOF composite membranes, which can significantly improve water purification.

The complicated oily wastewater containing hazardous organics post a great challenge to the membrane separation technology . Herein, a multilayer porous multifunctional MXene/MOF composite membrane with high permeability and photocatalytic degradation performance was prepared by embedding rod-shaped MIL-53(Fe) into layered MXene nanosheets and self-assembling them onto porous polyacrylonitrile fibrous mat. It was found that the embedment of rod-like MIL-53(Fe) with rough nanostructures could effectively avoid the dense physical stacking of MXene nanosheets and regulate the layer spacing, which was conducive to the enhancement of water channel and permeability of membrane. Moreover, the hydrophilic modification of TA could render the super-wetting feature (WCA=0°, UOCA>150°) and enhance the oil resistance of the membrane. Thence, the composite membrane exhibited favorable separation flux (904.3 ∼ 1226.5 L·m −2 ·h −1 ) and retention rate (99.06 ∼ 99.62%) for different O/W emulsions. In addition, the coupling of rod-like MIL-53(Fe) and MXene nanosheets endowed the composite membrane with efficient photocatalytic performance, which could degrade various dyes contained in oily wastewater (CV: 62.4%, MeB : 99.0%, CR: 79.5%, MO: 84.1%). Overall, this study opens up a new way for the preparation of super-wetting and multi-functional fibrous composite membrane, showing the broad application prospects in the purification of multi-component oily wastewater.
