Covalently bonded interfaces with delocalized π electrons in a MOF-in-MOF heterojunction for efficient gas–solid phase CO2 photoreduction

Rou-Yu Li,Wenyu Yuan,Meng-Ru Cui,Boda Li,Hui Zhang,Zhenhao Peng,Quan-Guo Zhai

The interfaces in heterostructure photocatalysts play an important role in charge migration, but the rational controllable interfacial construction remains a challenge. Herein, a covalently bonded interface with delocalized π bonds was controllably constructed via the encapsulation of UiO-66-NH2 nanoparticles in MUV-10 skeletons. The UiO-66-NH2/MUV-10 heterojunction enabled both efficient capture and conversion of CO2 and H2O. The delocalized π bond in the covalent interface efficiently accelerated interfacial charge migration, suppressed carrier recombination, and reduced the work function for electronic effusion. As a consequence, UiO-66-NH2/MUV-10 exhibited superior CO2 photoreduction activity with H2O under visible light irradiation in the gas–solid phase. The CO evolution rate reached as high as 38.7 μmol g−1 h−1, which surpassed that of most commonly reported gas–solid phase photocatalysts. This work not only provides a feasible strategy for the controllable construction of interfaces but also demonstrates the great potential of interfacial engineering for efficient photocatalysis and other related areas.

Efficient recovery of gold using Macroporous Metal-Organic framework prepared by the 'MOF in MOF' method

Yong Xiang,Chang-Yuan Cheng,Meng-Hao Liu,Wen-Cai Bai,Zhou-Xuan Zang,Li Xu,Yi Yu,Guo-Ji Liu

The design of an efficient adsorbent for Au(III) has remained a challenging research focus, as the adsorbent needs to overcome competition from other ions while simultaneously addressing pore blockage caused by the reduction of Au(III) to elemental gold. In this study, we report the synthesis of a hierarchically porous metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) with ultra-large pores (300 nm) using the “MOF in MOF” method. This material facilitates enhanced adsorption kinetics by increasing the rate of gold ion adsorption and effectively prevents pore blockage resulting from Au(III) reduction, enabling access to the majority of adsorption sites. Batch experiments were conducted, and various complex water mixtures, including freshwater, simulated electronic waste solution, and gold ore leachate, were tested to demonstrate the rapid extraction of trace amounts of gold by the developed adsorbent. Remarkably, without additional functionalization, the adsorbent solely based on its pore advantage achieved a gold adsorption capacity of 1184 mg/g and reached 80 % adsorption within just 5 min (C0 = 100 mg/L, V/m = 2 L/g). Furthermore, the gold recovered from the leachate of gold ore exhibited a purity of 23.8 K (99.2 % purity).

Core–Shell MOF-in-MOF Nanopore Bifunctional Host of Electrolyte for High-Performance Solid-State Lithium Batteries

Ahmed Eissa Abdelmaoula,Jun Shu,Yu Cheng,Lin Xu,Gang Zhang,Yangyang Xia,Muhammad Tahir,Peijie Wu,Liqiang Mai

Solid-state lithium-ion batteries with high safety are the encouraging next-generation rechargeable electrochemical energy storage devices. Yet, low Li + conductivity of solid electrolyte and instability of solid–solid interface are the key issues hampering the practicability of the solid electrolyte. In this research, core–shell MOF-in-MOF nanopores UIO-66@67 are proposed as a unique bifunctional host of ionic liquid (IL) to fabricate core–shell ionic liquid–solid electrolyte (CSIL). In the current design of CSIL, the shell structure (UIO-67) has a large pore size and a high specific surface area, boosting the absorption amount of ionic liquid electrolyte, thus increasing the ionic conductivity. Nevertheless, the core structure (UIO-66) has a small pore size compared to the ionic liquid, which can confine the large ions, decreasing their mobility, and selectively boost the transport of Li + . The CSIL solid electrolyte exhibits considerable enhancement in the lithium transference number ( t Li + ) and ionic conductivity compared to the homogenous porous host (pure UIO-66 and UIO-67). Additionally, the Li|CSIL|Li symmetric batteries maintain a stable polarization of less than 28 mV for more than 1000 h at 1000 µA cm −2 . Overall, the results demonstrate the concept of core–shell MOF-in-MOF nanopores as a promising bifunctional host of electrolytes for solid-state or quasi-solid-state rechargeable batteries.

Zn/Co-ZIFs@MIL-101(Fe) metal–organic frameworks are effective photo-Fenton catalysts for RhB removal

Yucheng Li,Xiangyu Wang,Zhengyin Duan,Dehai Yu,Qiang Wang,Dandan Ji,Wenxia Liu

Treating dye-contaminated wastewater using the visible light–driven photo-Fenton reaction is beneficial to environmental remediation. This paper reports the synthesis of a novel, highly effective photo-Fenton catalyst, the Zn/Co-ZIFs@MIL-101(Fe) composite, by a facile internal-growth method. The composite, which had an MOF-in-MOF structure, activated H 2 O 2 to decompose RhB, a polluting-dye model, under visible-light illumination. The transfer of the electron–hole pair was synergistically accelerated by the reaction centers of the composite (the MIL-101(Fe) shell and Zn/Co-ZIFs core), which enhanced H 2 O 2 activation. The generated OH, O 2 − , and 1 O 2 effectively decomposed RhB. The composite’s catalytic performance was significantly enhanced by the electronic hybridization of its Fe 3+ , Co 2+ , and Zn 2+ metal centers. Thus, the composite demonstrated a remarkable capability to remove RhB. The composite polymetallic MOFs loaded with 3% Zn/Co-ZIFs prepared by us showed good reusability and water stability, and their morphology and structure did not change significantly after four runs, depending on the iron, cobalt, and zinc metal leaching concentrations 0.134 mg/L, 0.06 mg/L and 0.054 mg/L respectively. This study provides a novel method to construct an Zn/Co-ZIFs@MIL-101(Fe) catalyst with dual reaction centers that enhance the transfer of electron–hole pairs. Our findings inspire the application of MOF-based photo-Fenton catalysts to wastewater treatment and environmental remediation.

A MOF-in-MOF nanoplatform for photothermal/chemodynamic therapy that enhances antitumor immunity through targeted suppression of the COX-2/PGE2 axis

Zhang Yiling,Li Yu,Lu Jiayu,Qin Xin,Wang Zixin,Cai Aojie,Fan Ling,Jin Ronghua,Xie Yandong

To address the therapeutic limitations and metabolic toxicity associated with conventional nanocarriers, a nanostructure using an “MOF-in-MOF” strategy was engineered. The comprises an olsalazine (Olsa)-based copper metal-organic framework (Olsa-MOF) that integrates intrinsic anti-inflammatory properties and enhanced chemodynamic performance. This Olsa-MOF template is integrally enveloped by a tumor microenvironment-responsive TK-based Cu-MOF layer, which demonstrates exceptional photothermal properties. Subsequent surface functionalization with dopamine-grafted hyaluronic acid (DOPA-HA) endows active targeting ability, yielding the final nanocomposite termed Olsa@TK-Cu@HA. Olsa@TK-Cu@HA not only overcomes the limitations of conventional nanocarriers but also offers a novel strategy to enhance the therapeutic efficacy of photothermal therapy (PTT) and chemodynamic therapy (CDT) through targeted modulation of the COX-2/PGE2 inflammatory axis. The Olsa@TK-Cu@HA demonstrates a superior photothermal conversion efficiency (26.8%) and robust reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, along with pH-responsive release of Olsa. In vitro evaluation demonstrated that Olsa@TK-Cu@HA exerts tumor-selective cytotoxicity, showing 3.5-fold higher potency against cancer cell. Moreover, Olsa@TK-Cu@HA effectively induces immunogenic cell death (ICD), as evidenced by increased extracellular ATP efflux (5.06-fold elevation) and CRT exposure. Concurrently, it downregulates the COX‑2/PGE2 axis to relieve immunosuppression in the tumor microenvironment and suppresses PD‑L1 expression. This coordinated action amplifies ICD‑mediated antitumor immunity, leading to a tumor regression rate of 84.0% in vivo. By integrating precision targeting, stimulus-responsive drug release, and immunometabolic reprogramming, this work moves beyond conventional treatment paradigms and establishes an innovative platform for next‑generation cancer therapy.
