Magnesium phosphate bone cement (MPC) is one of the most important candidates for bone implant materials due to its properties such as no need for sintering, self-curing formation, high early compressive strength and rapid degradation. However, traditional methods for creating porous structures for MPC, such as foaming or incorporating degradable materials, often result in closed pores or pores predominantly localized on the surface, severely limiting its comprehensive degradation and effective formation of new bone. In this study, porous MPC scaffolds with directional layered channels were successfully prepared using innovative directional freeze-drying and in situ hydration techniques. The key findings of the study were that the incorporation of degradable acidic PVA staple fibers not only significantly improved the mechanical properties of the porous MPC scaffolds, but also effectively addressed the issue of high alkaline cell toxicity upon degradation. When the fiber content is 3 wt%, the compressive strength of the porous scaffold increases from 4.67 to 8.83 MPa, which was attributed to both the high tensile strength displayed by PVA fibers and the presence of multiple fiber forms within the scaffold. And the acidification of PVA fibers during degradation resulting in a decrease in the pH value of the SBF from 8.93 to 7.67, which reduced the cytotoxicity of the scaffolds. Furthermore, through a 7-day microzone in situ hydration process, the porous MPC scaffold with a Mg/P molar ratio of 1.45:1 transformed into KMgPO 4 ·6H 2 O. The pH value of simulated body fluid (SBF) showed an increasing trend with the rising Mg/P molar ratio following degradation of porous MPC scaffolds. The conclusions of the study showed that the prepared porous PVA f /MPC scaffolds with oriented hierarchical channels exhibit non-cytotoxicity and provide an optimal environment for cell survival and proliferation, and demonstrated great potential applications in the field of biodegradable bone implantation materials.

Phakic intraocular lenses (pIOLs) are an increasingly popular treatment for refractive errors, particularly myopia. However, there are limited materials available for pIOLs, and each has its issues such as non-foldability, low refractive index (RI), glistenings, or bioadhesion. In response to existing challenges, a series of poly(styrene-block-isobutylene-block-styrene) (SIBS) block copolymers are evaluated for pIOL application, and methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC) is grafted onto SIBS to further improve its anti-adhesive properties in this work. By controlling the styrene content, SIBS exhibits a tunable high RI of 1.521–1.532. Meanwhile, the SIBS materials are foldable and possess a glass transition temperature ( T g ) below −60°C. Furthermore, SIBS has a very low average glistening density below 20 MV/mm 2 . Given the hydrophobic nature of the materials, MPC is grafted onto the surface of SIBS, resulting in a notable decrease in water contact angle, protein adsorption, and relative bacterial adsorption from 102.7° ± 2.3°, 12.13 ± 1.82 μg/cm 2 , and 1.00 ± 0.33 to 78.2° ± 0.2°, 3.16 ± 0.93 μg/cm 2 , and 0.02 ± 0.01, respectively. Cytotoxicity and in vivo subcutaneous implantation experiments demonstrate that both SIBS and its modified counterpart are noncytotoxic and biosafe. Collectively, SIBS-based materials represent a promising option for the next generation of pIOLs.

A three-dimensional composite carbon material (CNT@MPC) showing coaxial cable-like structure was prepared by carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and glucose through hydrothermal method . The ternary composite (PTCDA/CNT@MPC) was synthesized by coating a layer of 3,4,9,10-perylene tetracarboxylic dianhydride (PTCDA) molecules on the surface of CNT@MPC composite carbon material. The sodium ion battery was assembled using the ternary composite as the positive electrode material, and sodium metal as the negative electrode . The results show that the electrochemical performance of PTCDA/CNT@MPC composite is much better than that of pure PTCDA. The first discharge capacity is 131.2 mAh g −1 as the current density is 0.1 A g −1 , which is close to its theoretical specific capacity of 135 mAh g −1 . In particular, the battery shows better discharge properties at higher discharge current rate. When the current density reaches 10 A g −1 , the PTCDA/CNT@MPC electrode material is still able to attain a superior capacity of 90.1 mAh g −1 . This is due to the higher conductivity of CNT@MPC composite carbon material, which not only enhances the conductivity of PTCDA, but also increases the transport channel of ions, so as to increase the adsorption of sodium ions into the composite positive electrode. Therefore, the reversible capacity and cycle life of the composite electrode are significantly improved, which exhibit the excellent intercalation and de-intercalation performance for sodium ions and the charge-discharge rate performance.

Raspberry-like polymer/inorganic compound hybrid colloidal spheres have attracted tremendous interest owing to their many potential applications, but most of them are concentrated on synthesis methods, controlling structures and morphologies. Herein, we synthesize raspberry-like poly(ethyl methacrylate)/SiO 2 colloidal spheres and further graft a hydrophilic diblock copolymer on the SiO 2 nanoparticles. The obtained copolymer-grafted hybrid sphere-based coatings are robust and display excellent underwater superoleophobic and anti-biofouling performances as well as self-repairing ability.

Evidence indicates that Baicalein can ameliorate renal interstitial fibrosis by inducing myofibroblast apoptosis and inhibit the RLS3-induced ferroptosis in melanocytes. However, the relationship between renal interstitial fibrosis and anti-ferroptosis affected by Baicalein remains unclear. In our study, the anti-fibrosis and anti-ferroptosis effects of Baicalein were assessed in a rat model induced by the UUO method in vivo , and the effects of Baicalein on Erastin-induced ferroptosis of renal MPC-5 cells were examined by Western blot of fibrosis-related and ferroptosis-related proteins in vitro . In the UUO-induced rat model, Baicalein decreased kidney weight loss, improved renal function assessed the biomarks of urinary albumin excretion, serum creatine, and BUN levels, and reduced renal tubular injury. Furthermore, Baicalein inhibited renal ferroptosis by reducing ROS and MDA levels and increasing SOD and GSH levels in the UUO rat model. In addition, Baicalein potently reduced the expression of fibrosis-related proteins such as TGF-β1, a-SMA, and Smad-2 to prevent renal interstitial fibrosis, and increased the expression of ferroptosis-related proteins such as SLC7A11, GPX4, and FTH to inhibit ferroptosis both in vitro and in vivo . Taken together, Baicalein exerts anti-fibrosis activity by reducing the ferroptosis response on the UUO-induced rat model and renal MPC5 cells. Therefore, Baicalein, as a novel therapeutic method on kidney diseases with strong activity in suppressing ferroptosis, could be a potential alternative treatment for renal interstitial fibrosis.

Methyl diphenylmethane dicarbamate (MDC) is a key intermediate in the non-phosgene synthesis of diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI), which serves as an essential raw material for polyurethane production. In this work, six triethylamine-based sulfonic acid-functionalized ionic liquids (TEA-SAILs) were synthesized and employed as catalysts for the condensation reaction of methyl phenyl carbamate (MPC) to MDC under solvent-free conditions. Among the synthesized TEA-SAILs, [TEA PS][HSO 4 ], possessing the highest acidity, exhibited excellent catalytic activity with an MDC yield of up to 84.2% and a selectivity of 93.5% under mild conditions, which compares favorably with numerous reported catalytic systems. The plausible reaction pathway for the MPC condensation catalyzed by [TEA PS][HSO 4 ] was proposed based on In-situ FT-IR experiments and DFT calculations, suggesting a nucleophilic substitution mechanism. [TEA PS][HSO 4 ] demonstrates remarkable reusability and can be efficiently recovered via simple heterogeneous separation. TEA-SAIL not only enhances reaction efficiency but also substantially reduces the required reactor volume, aligning with the principles of green and sustainable chemical manufacturing. Blood-contacting devices provide dual risks of thrombosis and infection in clinical applications. Conventional anticoagulants cause adverse effects and exhibit inadequate stability in hypercoagulable states. In this study, we broke away from the traditional understanding that zwitterionic hydrophilic groups dominate anti-fouling properties. We synthesized a ternary copolymer (PMLT) from MPC, LMA, and TSMA to investigate hydrophilic group proportion effects on thrombosis resistance, especially in hypercoagulable blood. Simply increasing the density of phosphocholine (PC) groups in the coating resulted in the coating losing its anticoagulant efficacy in hypercoagulable blood. Conversely, the composition-optimized PMLT-12 coating maintained a stable biomimetic bilayer structure. It demonstrated low protein adsorption and high antibacterial activity under normal conditions. Crucially, PMLT-12 retained excellent anti-thrombotic performance in challenging environments, including blood containing elevated levels of calcium ions and lipopolysaccharides (LPS), and blood from a diabetic animal model. The covalently crosslinked network mediated by TSMA concurrently enhanced the mechanical stability of the coating. This study highlights the critical role of hydrophobic–hydrophilic balance in anticoagulant efficacy against high coagulation risk, providing a novel strategy for improving blood-contacting device surfaces.

This study presents a high-performance cobalt catalyst supported on microwave-pyrolyzed biochar (Co/MPC) for efficient peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation to degrade atrazine (ATZ). The microwave-assisted pyrolysis (MWP) technique yielded biochar (MPC) with superior textural properties—specifically, a significantly higher specific surface area (214.18 m 2 /g) and pore volume (0.46 cm 3 /g)—compared to conventionally pyrolyzed biochar (BC). This enhanced porous structure facilitated the uniform dispersion of ~5 nm cobalt nanoparticles, resulting in the highly active Co/MPC catalyst. The Co/MPC+PMS system achieved over 99% ATZ degradation within just 4 min, outperforming its conventionally prepared counterpart (Co/BC) (77%). The catalyst demonstrated robust performance across a range of PMS dosages and pollutant concentrations, with minimal interference from coexisting inorganic ions (Cl − , SO 4 2− , NO 3 − , H 2 PO 4 − , HCO 3 − ) and organic humic acid in the Co/MPC+PMS system. Radical quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis identified hydroxyl radicals (⋅OH) and sulfate radicals (SO₄⋅⁻) as the dominant reactive species responsible for the rapid degradation. This work highlights the significant advantage of microwave-assisted synthesis in creating advanced carbon-metal catalysts and offers a highly efficient, stable, and practical solution for the remediation of persistent organic pollutants like ATZ without requiring additional energy input. Developing high-performance and low-cost catalysts for replacing Pt-based catalysts is a significant challenge for solar cells and water splitting applications. In this work, a bifunctional hybrid catalyst of MnTa 2 O 6 @MPC (MPC: mesh-like bio-based porous carbon) was synthesized, using a co-precipitation approach. Benefiting from the high specific surface area (332.743 m 2 g −1 ), integrating the merits of the electrical conductivity of MPC, the outstanding electrocatalytic ability of MnTa 2 O 6 , and the synergistic effect between MnTa 2 O 6 and MPC, the catalytic activity of MnTa 2 O 6 @MPC was significantly enhanced. To boost the photovoltaic performance of dye-sensitized solar cells, a novel Cu 2+ /Cu + redox mediator and dye (Y123, D35) were adopted for replacing the traditional I 3 - /I - redox mediator and N719 dye, respectively. The resulting advanced solar cell with the Cu 2+ /Cu + redox mediator based on the MnTa 2 O 6 @MPC counter electrode catalyst exhibited a photovoltage of ~0.88 V, and cell efficiencies of 3.41% and 1.92% for the D35 and Y123 dye systems, respectively, which are respectively 16% and 8% higher than that of Pt. MnTa 2 O 6 @MPC also exhibited significant catalytic ability for hydrogen production, yielding a small overpotential of 141.9 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 and a small Tafel slope of 105.0 mV dec −1 in an alkaline medium. This work provides promising guidance for designing bifunctional hybrid electrocatalysts for high-performance new energy devices.

The aim of this work is to provide a new kind of polyurethane with improved surface blood compatibility for long-term blood-contacting biomaterials. In the study, an aliphatic poly(ester-urethane) (H-PEU) with uniform-size hard segments was synthesized by one-step chain extension of poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) with diurethane diisocyanate (HBH), and biomimetic phosphorylcholine (PC) groups were immobilized onto the film surface with high grafting efficiency by three-step chemical treatments under mild reaction conditions. The H-PEU film was firstly treated with 1,6-hexanediisocyanate (HDI) to introduce -NCO groups on the surface (H-PEU-NCO) through an allophanate reaction; the -NCO groups were then coupled via a condensation reaction with one of -NH 2 groups of tris(2-aminoethyl)amine (TAEA) to immobilize -NH 2 on the surface (H-PEU-NH 2 ); finally, the double bond of 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC) reacted with -NH 2 by Michael addition reaction to obtain MPC-grafted H-PEU (H-PEU-MPC). The modified surfaces were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results verified that MPC was successfully grafted onto H-PEU surface with high grafting density. The blank and modified films showed similar crystallization behaviors, thermal stabilities and mechanical properties, indicating that the chemical treatments had minimum influence on the physicochemical properties of the substrate. The H-PEU-MPC displaying a much lower water contact angle (~15.2°) than H-PEU (80.3°) meant that the hydrophilic PC functional groups improved the surface hydrophilicity significantly. The surface blood compatibility was examined by bovine serum albumin adsorption and platelet adhesion tests, and the results revealed that H-PEU-MPC had improved resistance to protein adsorption and platelet adhesion capacity. The MPC-grafted H-PEU film possessed outstanding mechanical properties (ultimate stress: 36.1 MPa; strain at break: 883%), low protein adsorption quantity (1.33 μg/cm 2 ) and good anti-platelet adhesion capacity (582 ± 16 per mm 2 ), implying its high potential to be applied as biomaterials for vascular grafts, subcutaneously implanted devices or other blood-contacting devices.

13 C 16 -palmitate tracer lipidomics was optimized for MPC-5 cells. • FHT reshaped lipid flux in adriamycin-injured podocytes. • Acylcarnitine profiling revealed restored fatty acid oxidation. • Integrated metabolomics linked lipid remodeling to podocyte protection. Lipid metabolism disturbances drive Nephrotic Syndrome (NS) progression. Current NS therapies have limited efficacy against lipid disorders and often cause significant side effects. Previously, our glucose tracer profiling revealed a compensatory activation of fatty acid synthesis in NS, highlighting lipid metabolism as a critical pathophysiological factor. However, the specific molecular targets through which the multi-component Fangji Huangqi Tang (FHT) regulates this process remain undefined. This study evaluated FHT's protective effects using an adriamycin (ADR)-induced MPC-5 podocyte injury model. We integrated an optimized 13 C 16 -palmitic acid tracer platform with acylcarnitine-targeted metabolomics and molecular biology to dissect underlying mechanisms. FHT intervention significantly attenuated podocyte apoptosis and neutral lipid deposition while upregulating structural proteins. Crucially, it rescued mitochondrial dysfunction by restoring membrane potential, ATP levels, and cellular oxygen consumption. Metabolomic analysis demonstrated that FHT rebalanced lipid homeostasis by inhibiting triglyceride synthesis, promoting triglyceride catabolism, enhancing phospholipid synthesis, and restoring fatty acid oxidation. In conclusion, FHT mitigates podocyte injury by reshaping lipid metabolic homeostasis via multiple targets, providing a strong mechanistic basis for its clinical use in NS.

In view of the disadvantage of the limited active site utilization due to the easy aggregation of phthalocyanine compounds, three kinds of graphene composite metal phthalocyanines (TN-MPc@GN, M = Fe, Co, Ni) were prepared using an in situ composite method, and their electrochemical properties were investigated as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries. The layered structure and large specific surface area of graphene are used to disperse phthalocyanine uniformly, so that the conjugated structure (CC/CN/NO) of phthalocyanine is more exposed and the utilization of active sites for embedding lithium ions are greatly enhanced. At the same time, the large surface area is beneficial to the contact between materials and the electrolyte, which results in a faster transmission path. As a result, the first discharge specific capacities of the graphene composite phthalocyanine (TN-MPc@GN, M = Fe, Co, Ni) electrodes are 440.8, 765.0 and 753.9 mA h g−1, respectively. After 420 cycles, the specific capacities increased to 734.6, 844.7 and 949.1 mA h g−1, respectively, which are much higher than those of the pristine three phthalocyanine (TN-MPC, M = Fe, Co, Ni) electrodes without the graphene composite. Using the graphene composite can be an effective strategy to improve the utilization of active sites of organic electrode materials in lithium-ion batteries.
