MXene/CNTs/Cu-MOF electrochemical probe for detecting tyrosine

Jing Chen,Ying Chen,Shuying Li,Jiao Yang,Jianbin Dong,Xiaoquan Lu

Tyrosine is the precursor of some neurotransmitters such as thyroxine and dopamine. It has the effect of regulating emotions and stimulating the nervous system. Changes in tyrosine levels in the human body are associated with certain diseases. Therefore, it is very necessary to prepare a new type of tyrosine sensor. In this work, an enzyme-free electrochemical sensor based on MXene/CNTs/CuMOF composite was developed for the detection of tyrosine. Embedding carbon nanotubes (CNTs) into MXene effectively prevented the aggregation of MXene sheets. Further modification of MXene/CNTs materials with CuMOF octahedral particles with porous structure can improve the porosity and catalytic capability of the composites. Under the optimal detection conditions, the prepared sensor has good linearity in the detection of tyrosine within range 0.53 μM–232.46 μM with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.19 μM. The stability and selectivity of the sensor is high, and can be used to detect tyrosine in human serum.

TiO2-Ti3C2Tx MXene@CNTs hybrids modified polypropylene separator for high-performance lithium‑sulfur battery

Yongjie Huang,Yuqing Chen,Qing Xu,Chunyan Xu,Liying Yang,Ningyi Jiang,Jibin Zhong,Xinghan Zhao,Shougen Yin

Lithium‑sulfur (Li S) batteries are regarded as a potential candidate of next-generation energy storage devices. However, the poor long-term cycling performance arose from shuttle effect remains a challenge. The recent studies have shown that two dimensional (2D) MXenes have great potential in high efficient Li S cells due to strong adsorption ability for lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) and effective catalytic activity for rapid kinetics. Herein, a polypropylene separator modified by a three-dimensional (3D) TiO 2 -Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene@CNTs heterostructure using sulfur templates combined with H 2 O 2 partial oxidation treatment is proposed to alleviate the shuttle effect and improve the overall utilization efficiency of sulfur in Li S batteries. The as-prepared separator effectively enhances the LiPSs trapping ability and significantly reduces the oxidation overpotential of Li 2 S, demonstrating high catalytic efficiency and sufficient conductivity to promote the transformation of LiPS to Li 2 S and thus accelerating the transformation kinetics of Li S batteries. Remarkably, the TiO 2 -MX@CNTs modified separator with 1.3 mg cm −2 sulfur loading enables a stable capacity of 859 mAh g −1 after 300 cycles at 1C with a capacity decay rate of approximately 0.035 % per cycle, suggesting promising potential for practical applications. This work presents a new method to regulate the electrochemical performance of Li S batteries.

Sandwich-type electrochemical immunosensor based on MXene/CNTs substrate and MOFs (MIL-101) probe for leather artifact identification

Lianpeng Lv,Xiaojing Kang,Lubin Hua,Zejian Du,Ruixue Sun,Yefeng Deng,Hailiang Yang,Zheng Xu,Yang Zhou,Bing Wang

Effective identification of excavated leather artifacts assumes a crucial role in the subsequent restoration and protection of the artifacts, and on a deeper level, it holds significant implications for the history and culture represented by the artifacts. Existing approaches fail to address the pain points of micro-trace detection and species identification. In this work, two-dimensional transition metal carbonitrides/carbon nanotubes (MXene/CNTs) and metal organic frameworks (MOFs) were employed as electrochemical immunosensor materials to construct and utilize a sandwich-type immunosensor for the first time to detect leather artifacts. The sensor exhibits a wide linear detection range of 10 −1 –10 3 ng/mL and an extremely low detection limit of 83 pg/mL, which can fulfill the requirements of ultra-sensitive detection. In addition, the sandwich electrochemical immunosensor demonstrates excellent specificity and stability, with the redox peak current value retaining over 95 % of the original value after 10 repeats of cyclic voltammetry (CV) and more than 85 % of the original peak current after one week of differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), with an RSD of 0.767 %. The immunosensor achieves satisfactory outcomes in both qualitative and quantitative detection when analyzing leather artifacts and micro-traces, and its performance surpasses that of existing methods. Therefore, this work not only introduces novel materials for the construction of sandwich immunosensors but also provides new concepts and approaches for archaeological detection of cultural relics.

Dianbo Zhang,Rui Yin,Yanjun Zheng,Qianming Li,Hu Liu,Chuntai Liu,Changyu Shen

High-performance electronic textile with outstanding strain sensing, electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding, and Joule heating performances are highly desirable for modern integrated smart wearable electronic devices. Herein, multifunctional electronic textile based on hybrid Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) conductive nanomaterials coated thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) non-woven fabric (MCT-fabric) is fabricated via a facile dip-coating approach. Based on the synergistic MXene/CNTs conductive coating and pre-stretching induced ultrasensitive microcrack structure, tunable conductive MCT-fabric strain sensor with high sensitivity (GF is as high as 9022), wide sensing range (∼210 %), rapid response/recovery time (140/160 ms), excellent long-term stability and reliability (∼1000 cycles) is successfully constructed. Besides, benefiting from the perfect synergistic conductive network and porous fibrous network structure, the MCT-fabric displays superior EMI shielding effectiveness (∼43 dB for the MCT-fabric with a thickness of 600 μm) and excellent thermal management performance including high Joule heating temperature at relatively low applied voltages, rapid Joule heating response, sufficient heating stability and reliability. This work indicates that the high-performance multifunctional electronic textile has attractive potential for strain sensing, EMI shielding and thermal management applications in artificial intelligence and emerging wearable electronics.

Thermal and infrared light self-repairing, high sensitivity, and large strain sensing range shape memory MXene/CNTs/EVA composites fiber strain sensor for human motion monitoring

Minghui Xie,Shuangxin Li,Xiaoming Qi,Zhangyi Chi,Luting Shen,Zahidul Islam,Yubing Dong

Wearable electronic gadgets have always been in great demand for multifunctional flexible strain sensors. However, developing a flexible strain sensor with excellent characteristics such as high sensitivity, wide sensing range, and excellent durability continues to be a significant challenge. On the one hand, the two-performance metrics of high sensitivity and wide sensing range are mutually exclusive, because the former requires significant structural changes under small strains, whereas the latter necessitates the preservation of morphological integrity under large deformations . On the other hand, the usage of flexible strain sensors is invariably accompanied by the destruction of the conductive network, rendering the device unusable for an extended period of time. Here, based on the unique strain related microcrack structure of the Ti 3 C 2 T x (MXene)/carbon nanotubes (CNTs) synergistic interaction and the shape memory property of ethylene vinyl acetate polymer (EVA), a MXene/CNTs/EVA fiber strain sensor was innovatively designed and prepared by swelling ultrasonic method. The results showed that the sensor combines a large strain sensing range (190%), high sensitivity (82.5), ultra-fast response speed (178.9 ms), and excellent durability and stability (> 10,000 cycles). What is even more exciting is that if the strain sensor is failure, it can be repaired by heating for 2 min or infrared irradiation for 5.4 s, and the mechanical and electrical properties of the repaired sensor can be restored to 92% and 94% of the original. In addition, this strain sensor can accurately monitor subtle and large movements of the human body (including elbow and finger bending, speaking, and mouth opening/closing), even if the damaged MXene/CNTs/EVA fiber strain sensor has been repaired. The self-repairing MXene/CNTs/EVA composites fiber-based shape memory matrix has excellent potential as a wearable strain sensor.

Zhao Xinyi,Lin Xiangsheng,Yao Zhao,Li Yuanyue,Li Yang,Gong Ningji

Smart agriculture utilizes sensors and software to control agricultural production through mobile or computer platforms, enabling unmanned, automated, and intelligent management. Recently, research and development in plant growth monitoring technologies have garnered significant attention. The challenge lies in achieving long-term monitoring, phased predictions, and plant self-regulation without harming the plants. The present study demonstrates the fabrication of plant-compatible and breathable tensile and bending strain sensors using composite nanofiber membranes (CNMs) composed of Ti 2 C 2 T x (MXene), carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPU) through electrospinning and ultrasonic immersion techniques. The MXene and CNTs synergistically form a dual-network conductive structure on the TPU nanofiber membrane, thereby imparting the composite membrane with remarkable tensile sensitivity (5.41, 7.39, and 3.39 within the ranges of 0%–20%, 20%–50%, and 50%–70%, respectively) as well as exceptional bending sensitivity (1.79, 0.89, and 0.46 within the ranges of 0°–30°, 30°–90°, and 90°–120°, respectively). The tensile strain sensor, combined with a deep learning Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) model, establishes a platform for plant growth monitoring and prediction. The bending strain sensor, integrated with a shape memory alloy (SMA)-based soft actuator, forms a plant sensing-actuating system to assist in plant leaf growth. This work leverages MXene/CNTs/TPU CNMs to flexibly prepare strain sensors for specific applications, combining deep learning and soft actuators to achieve plant growth prediction and self-regulation. This research holds significant importance in advancing the development of smart agriculture.

Biomimetic Leaf-Vein Aerogel for Electromagnetic Wave Absorption and Thermal Superinsulation

Haodong Gu,Li Tian,Qiuqi Zhang,Xiao You,Mengmeng Wang,Shaoming Dong,Jinshan Yang

Electromagnetic protection in extreme environments requires materials with excellent thermal insulation capability and mechanical property to withstand severe temperature fluctuations and complex external stresses. Achieving strong electromagnetic wave absorption (EMA) while sustaining these exceptional properties remains a significant challenge. Herein, a facile approach is demonstrated to fabricate a biomimetic leaf-vein MXene/CNTs/PI (MCP) aerogel with parallel venations through bidirectional freeze-casting method. Due to its multi-arch lamellar structure and parallel venations within the aerogel layers, the ultralight MCP aerogel (16.9 mg·cm −3 ) achieves a minimum reflection loss (RL min ) of −75.8 dB and a maximum effective absorption bandwidth (EAB max ) of 7.14 GHz with an absorber content of only 2.4 wt%, which also exhibits superelasticity and structural stability over a wide temperature range from −196 to 400 °C. Moreover, this unique structure facilitates rapid heat dissipation within the layers, while significantly impeding heat transfer between adjacent layers, achieving an ultralow thermal conductivity of 15.3 mW·m −1 ·K −1 for thermal superinsulation. The combination of excellent EMA performance, robust structural stability, and thermal superinsulation provides a potential design scheme under extreme conditions, especially in aerospace applications.

Thermoresistive Network in Phase-Transition Hydrogel: Achieving on/off Switchable Electromagnetic Interference Shielding

Jingyuan Tang,Yi Gao,Tian Li,Renchi Qin,Qing Qi,Fanbin Meng

Intelligent electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials, with their tunable EM wave response characteristics, have attracted much attention. However, the molecular-level response mechanism is under-explored and the tuning range is narrow. This study proposes an EMI shielding switch hydrogel based on molecular precision manipulation of a thermoresistive network capable of adaptively regulating electromagnetic shielding performance. It has two temperature-controlled switching states: on/off and strong/weak shielding. The hydrogel consists of interpenetrating polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) networks, giving it thermal shrinkable properties. A temperature-induced high contact resistance MXene-carbon nanotubes (MXene-CNTs) conductive network is assembled within it. This combination enables the hydrogel to have switchable EMI shielding performance in the X-band, with a range of 9.3–53.9 dB at different temperatures or thicknesses. The remarkable performance results from the synergistic effect of a temperature-driven shrinkage matrix and a thermoresistive network, involving adjustments of conductive particle stacking, hydrogel conductivity, and electromagnetic wave transmission path. MXenes offer remote-controlled photothermal-responsive on/off switchable EMI shielding. Significantly, the hydrogel's self-healing properties allow it to endure damage and its EMI shielding performance can be quickly restored. This work paves a new way for the rational design of adaptive EMI shielding devices at the molecular level.

An MXene/CNTs@P nanohybrid with stable Ti–O–P bonds for enhanced lithium ion storage

Shixue Zhang,Huan Liu,Bin Cao,Qizhen Zhu,Peng Zhang,Xin Zhang,Renjie Chen,Feng Wu,Bin Xu

Two-dimensional transition metal carbides (MXenes) have a unique structure, excellent electronic conductivity and a low Li+ diffusion barrier, and show potential for application in energy storage. Especially, MXenes can act as a conductive matrix to achieve excellent lithium storage performance. Herein, a Ti3C2Tx MXene/carbon nanotubes@red phosphorus (Ti3C2Tx/CNTs@P) nanohybrid with stable Ti–O–P bonds is fabricated. The CNTs are introduced into Ti3C2Tx to construct a conductive network, and then the Ti3C2Tx/CNTs are combined with P by a ball-milling method. In this process, the surface oxygen-containing functional groups of Ti3C2Tx interact with P, forming Ti–O–P bonds. Owing to the large capacity contribution of P, the conductive network and buffering role of Ti3C2Tx/CNTs, and the effect of the Ti–O–P bond, the Ti3C2Tx/CNTs@P nanohybrid exhibits a superior reversible capacity of 2598 mA h g−1 at 0.05C (1C = 2600 mA g−1, based on the active material P), excellent cycling stability (2078 mA h g−1 after 500 cycles) and superior rate capability (454 mA h g−1 at 30C). These results demonstrate that the Ti3C2Tx/CNTs@P nanohybrid offers fascinating potential for high-performance lithium-ion batteries.

Jianhua Zhou,Shuang Ao,Kai Lu,Anguo Xiao

The multifunctional electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials have become more and more indispensable due to serious electromagnetic radiation pollution and harsh wild environments. Herein, hydrophobic MXene/CNTs/oxidized sodium alginate/collagen (MCAC) composite aerogel with excellent EMI shielding, Joule heating and thermal insulation performance was prepared via unidirectional freeze-drying and dip-coating with PDMS. The 1D 2D conductive network between MXene and CNTs endowed hydrophobic MCAC composite aerogel with high electrical conductivity (178.45 S/m), excellent EMI shielding effectiveness (61.47 dB at a thickness of 2 mm) and low-voltage-driven Joule heating (up to 90 °C at 6 V). Furthermore, hydrophobic MCAC composite aerogel also exhibited superhydrophobicity (contact angle of 157.2°) and extraordinary thermal insulation performance. This work provides a forward-looking idea for building multifunctional EMI shielding materials with superior EMI SE, which have potential applications in aerospace, portable electronic devices, and defense industries.

Songyue Pan,Jingqiang He,Weijie Wang,Jiatong Yan,Shan Jiang,Chuanxi Lin,Hong Tang,Ronghui Guo

With the development of the internet of things (IoT) and the rise of the concept of the internet of everything, wearable sensor devices are booming as mobile terminals and have a huge market value. However, the fabrication of nanofiber membrane-based pressure sensors with special microstructures remains a significant challenge. In this study, template-assisted electrospinning was used to fabricate microhemispherical thermoplastic polyurethane (TT) nanofiber membranes. The preparation of MXene@CNTs/TT (MCTT) nanofiber membranes was conducted via the ultrasound-assisted dip-coating method, utilizing MXene and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as composite conductive materials. Subsequently, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) encapsulation was employed to prepare PDMS-MCTT conductive nanofiber membranes. Utilizing an aligned assembly strategy based on the microhemispherical structure, the PDMS-MCTT bilayer pressure sensor exhibits high sensitivity (Smax = 471.3 kPa–1), wide pressure range (0–521.6 kPa), low detection limit (0.003 kPa), fast response time (7 and 8 ms) and reliable cycling performance (3000 cycles). In addition, the sensor offers excellent breathability and hydrophobicity (contact angle of 132.7°). Usefulness of the sensor in detecting body signals highlights its potential for motion detection and health monitoring.

Highly Sensitive and Stretchable MXene/CNTs/TPU Composite Strain Sensor with Bilayer Conductive Structure for Human Motion Detection

Hui Dong,Jingchao Sun,Xingmin Liu,Xiaodan Jiang,Shaowei Lu

The universal application of wearable strain sensors in various situations for human-activity monitoring is considerably limited by the contradiction between high sensitivity and broad working range. There still remains a huge challenge to design sensors featuring simultaneous broad working range and high sensitivity. Herein, a typical bilayer-conductive structure Ti3C2Tx MXene/carbon nanotubes (CNTs)/thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) composite film was developed by a simple and scalable vacuum filtration process utilizing a porous electrospun thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) mat as a skeleton. The MXene/CNTs/TPU strain sensor is composed of two parts: a brittle densely stacked MXene upper lamella and a flexible MXene/CNT-decorated fibrous network lower layer. Benefiting from the synergetic effect of the two parts along with hydrogen-bonding interactions between the porous TPU fiber mat and MXene sheets, the MXene/CNTs/TPU strain sensor possesses both a broad working range (up to 330%) and high sensitivity (maximum gauge factor of 2911) as well as superb long-term durability (2600 cycles under the strain of 50%). Finally, the sensor can be successfully employed for human movement monitoring, from tiny facial expressions, respiration, and pulse beat to large-scale finger and elbow bending, demonstrating a promising and attractive application for wearable devices and human–machine interaction.
