Nautilus-inspired MXene@TiO2 brick-mortar architecture towards superior strength-toughness balance in carbon fiber/epoxy composite

Nuo Xu,Zhihong Ma,Jinzhi Ouyang,Mingkun Jia,Tianyu Zhao,Fengjuan Wang,Wenxiang Xu,Shaohua Chen

Balancing strength and toughness with synergistic enhancement remains a critical challenge in developing high-performance carbon fiber (CF) composites. Deep-sea nautilus exhibits a superior strength-toughness balance compared with shallow-water nacre, attributed to its exceptionally large platelet aspect ratio, densely distributed nano-asperities, and higher organic matrix content that jointly give rise to enhanced interfacial shear resistance through coupled adhesion-friction mechanisms. Inspired by this naturally optimized architecture, we develop a biomimetic “brick-and-mortar” interphase using MXene@TiO 2 assembled with polydopamine/polyethyleneimine (PDA/PEI) nanolayers. Unlike conventional “brick-and-mortar” interphases, the micro-convex TiO 2 nanoparticles on MXene surfaces provide mechanical interlocking and more homogenized stress transfer, while PDA/PEI layers ensures strong chemical adhesion, enabling the simultaneous enhancement of interfacial strength and toughness. The resulting CF-MXene@TiO 2 /epoxy composite exhibits a 66.9 % increase in interfacial shear strength (75.6 ± 3.3 MPa) and a 71.9 % rise in interfacial fracture toughness G ic  = 91.3 ± 5.9 J/m 2 , compared to the desized CF. Flexural strength and interlaminar shear strength are also improved by 31.6 % and 46.9 %, respectively. Mechanistic analysis indicates that the synergistic interaction between the micro-convex “brick” (MXene@TiO 2 nanosheet) and the “mortar” (PDA/PEI nanolayer) optimizes the interfacial microstructure, effectively suppressing crack propagation and promoting superior interfacial strength and toughness. This work provides a rational biomimetic strategy to overcome the strength-toughness trade-off and offers potential applications in aerospace, marine, and other high-performance CF composite structures.

Efficient visible-light-photocatalytic sterilization by novel Z-scheme MXene/TiO2/Bi2S3

Haimeng Huang,Jianfeng Zhang,Chunmei Tang,Anyu Li,Tianmeng Zhang,Huapeng Xue,Daofeng Zhang

Photocatalytic sterilization has been recently realized as a competitive strategy for effective water purification just using sunlight, for which the new photocatalytic materials play the key role. In this study, a novel Z-scheme heterojunction material MXene/TiO 2 /Bi 2 S 3 was proposed, where TiO 2 nanoparticles and Bi 2 S 3 microspheres were uniformly distributed on the MXene nanosheets through facile hydrothermal oxidation and ultrasonic dispersion. With this Z-scheme heterojunction MXene/TiO 2 /Bi 2 S 3 , effective and quick sterilization of both Gram-negative bacteria and positive bacteria in only 120 min was realized. Especially, the apparent reaction constant for S. aureus reached 0.01659 min −1 , substantially higher than MXene and other related materials in literature. This could be ascribed to the narrow band gap (1.04 eV), the wide range of light absorption range (420 nm), and the low impedance of the as-obtained composite, facilitating the transfer and separation of photo-generated charges, which was also validated through the first-order kinetic model and DFT simulation calculations. Thus, the reactive species produced by photocatalysis effectively disrupted the defense action of the bacteria by damaging bacterial membrane structure, and reducing enzyme activity as well as cellular metabolism. This efficient and low-cost material for water disinfection has a great potential for practical applications in the future.

Fabrication of MXene@TiO2-CNT composite membranes for enhanced desalination through photothermal membrane distillation

Zhiyun Jiang,Junyi Pan,Yin Liu,Lixiao Ni,Shiyin Li

A novel MXene@TiO 2 /CNT composite membrane was fabricated for efficient photothermal membrane distillation. • The optimized membrane showed high vapor flux and solar-vapor conversion efficiency. • The membrane shows outstanding long-term stability and efficient desalination for high-salinity feeds and real seawater. • CFD simulation confirms superior interfacial heat localization and uniform mass transfer for scalable PMD applications. The escalating global freshwater scarcity necessitates the development of energy-efficient and sustainable desalination technologies. Membrane distillation (MD) offers promise for treating hypersaline brines but suffers from high thermal energy demand and temperature polarization, limiting its practical application. Photothermal membrane distillation (PMD) has emerged as a viable alternative by leveraging solar-driven interfacial heating to enhance thermal efficiency. However, conventional PMD systems often exhibit limited water flux due to narrow light absorption, inefficient thermal management, and mass transfer resistance. In this study, we developed a high-performance composite membrane by integrating partially oxidized MXene@TiO 2 heterostructures with an interwoven carbon nanotube (CNT) network on a porous PTFE substrate. The MXene@TiO 2 nanocomposites were synthesized via controlled oxidation using peroxymonosulfate, which introduced TiO 2 nanoparticles as intercalating spacers to expand nanochannels and facilitate vapor diffusion. The resulting membrane demonstrated broad-spectrum solar absorption and exceptional solar-vapor conversion efficiency. Under simulated one-sun irradiation, the membrane achieved a vapor flux of 3.03 kg/m 2 ·h, representing a 332.9% enhancement over non-illuminated conditions. Long-term stability and effective desalination of high-salinity feeds were also demonstrated, highlighting the potential of this membrane for sustainable solar-driven water purification. Electron trapping & blocking effect enabled by MXene/TiO2 intermediate layer for charge regulation of triboelectric nanogenerators

Xiaoping Chen,Yina Liu,Yi Sun,Tianshi Zhao,Chun Zhao,Tawfik A. Khattab,Eng Gee Lim,Xuhui Sun,Zhen Wen

As the existence of interfacial electric field, the surface charges of triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) would diffuse into air or tribo-material interior, resulting in the charge decay. Therefore, charge regulation from charge storage is crucial in addition to charge generation. In this work, a MXene/TiO 2 hybrid film has been prepared through partial oxidation of MXene in a contact-separate mode TENG (MT-TENG) as an intermediate layer between negative tribo-material and bottom electrode. It demonstrates the electric outputs of 128 μC/m 2 in charge density, 73.78 μW/cm 3 and 63.78 μW/g in average power density with an energy conversion efficiency of 34.81%. The surface terminals in MXene nanosheets and the oxygen vacancies in TiO 2 nanoparticles provide abundant electron trap sites. Moreover, the energy band bending resulting from the polarization effect of the hybrid film could further hinder the free electrons' drift to the bottom electrode, and consequently prevent the charge recombination. With the synergetic effect of electron storage and polarization, the MT-TENG with an intermediate layer rapidly reaches a charge dynamic equilibrium with a charge density of 80 μC/m 2 . It is expected to provide new insights for material science and structure design from the perspective of charge regulation to improve the output performance of TENGs.

Efficient removal of perfluorinated compounds with the polyamide nanofiltration membrane and membrane fouling resistance analysis

Wu Yuyang

View large Download slide View large Download slide Close modal Perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) are significant pollutants known for their high toxicity and resistance to natural degradation, posing a severe threat to both the global environment and human health. In this study, a polyamide (PA) membrane with an intermediate layer structure of MXene-TiO 2 (referred to as MXT-NFM) was utilized for the removal of PFCs. Experimental results confirm that MXT-NFM exhibited remarkable capacity in intercepting PFCs, accompanied by the high water flux. To gain insights into the mechanisms governing membrane fouling induced by PFCs, inorganic ions, and organics, a series of fouling tests were conducted using MXT-NFM under diverse conditions. Additionally, the XDLVO theory was employed to provide a theoretical perspective on the interactions occurring during the fouling process. The findings suggest that the MXene-TiO 2 intermediate layer contributed to the exceptional hydrophilicity and rough surface properties, enabling multiple functionalities. These include alleviating membrane pore plugging, improving the physical configuration of the PA layer, and effectively mitigating fouling phenomena in coexisting systems during practical applications. Moreover, the particle size of pollutant colloids and the acid–base interaction were identified as decisive factors influencing the development of membrane fouling. Perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) were efficiently removed by MXene-TiO 2 interlayered nanofiltration membrane. Influences of various parameters on the PFCs removal were investigated. Influences of various conditions on the membrane fouling were studied. Mechanism of membrane fouling was analyzed by the XDLVO theory.

Golgi protein 73 (GP73) is a promising serological biomarker for the early diagnosis and prognosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), it is essential to develop a sensitive detection method for GP73. Benefiting from its high sp 2 graphitic degree, efficient photoinduced electron–hole transfer, and robust transport of photogenerated ion migration abilities, the MXene/TiO 2 heterojunction was employed to fabricate a competitive photoelectrochemical (PEC) aptasensor for sensitive GP73 detection. In this study, GP73 possessed higher affinity with GP73 Apt than cDNA, and competitively displaced cDNA from GP73 Apt upon the binding process. This MXene-based PEC aptasensor displayed a logarithmic linear response to GP73 in the concentration range of 7.3–3650 ng/mL with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.42 ng/mL. Remarkably, this strategy was enabled to directly determinate GP73 in human serum samples of health control, esophageal cancer, gastric cancer, and HCC with analytical performance comparable to ELISA. Therefore, the proposed PEC sensing system may hold promising prospects for clinical detection of gastrointestinal cancers biomarker. Effect of sol–gel-derived core–shell MXene@TiO2 fillers on the dielectric properties of PVDF-based composites

Chen Huyue,Wang Jingrong,Lu Tengfei,Xu Deming,Xu Haiping,Yang Dandan,Chen Lifei

TiO 2 was deposited on the surface of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene by the sol–gel method to construct core–shell structured MXene@TiO 2 fillers, which were then introduced into the PVDF matrix to prepare dielectric composite films. The effects of TiO 2 deposition ratio and filler loading on the dielectric properties of the composites were systematically investigated, and the thermal and mechanical properties of the optimized system were further evaluated. The results showed that the TiO 2 coating layer could construct an effective interfacial insulating structure, which enhanced interfacial polarization while suppressing carrier migration and the formation of leakage pathways, thereby enabling the synergistic regulation of dielectric constant and dielectric loss. When the TiO 2 deposition mass ratio reached 50%, the composites showed a more effective overall interfacial modulation effect. Under these conditions, the 15 wt% composite delivered the optimal overall dielectric performance, with a dielectric constant of 29.1 and a dielectric loss as low as 0.051, representing a significant reduction compared with that of the unmodified MXene/PVDF composite (0.59), and it also exhibited superior dielectric stability. At the same time, the thermal stability and mechanical performance of the composites were also enhanced. The study confirms that building a TiO 2 interfacial insulating layer is an effective approach to enhancing the dielectric performance of PVDF-based composites while realizing the coordinated optimization of multiple properties.

MoS2/rGO/MXene/TiO2 composite aerogel with enhanced Mott-Schottky effect for achieving multifunctionality and broadband microwave absorption

Naixin Zhai,Zihao Wang,Zhenzhi Cheng,Lelin Xu,Wenjun Yang,Weiping Zhou,Fei Gao,Xiaojun Zeng,Guangsheng Luo

Heterointerface engineering based on the built-in electric field (BIEF) for guiding the construction of nanohybrids has emerged as a feasible strategy to enhance interfacial polarization and amplify the electromagnetic energy attenuation capability. Herein, we have designed a MoS 2 hollow nanospheres (HNS)/reduced graphene oxide (rGO)/Ti 3 C 2 T x /TiO 2 composite aerogel with multiple heterointerfaces. Comprehensive experimental characterization and density functional theory calculations, reveal that the 1T/2H-MoS 2 HNS and TiO 2 derived from the self-oxidation of Ti 3 C 2 T x serve as semiconductor phases to establish effective Mott-Schottky contacts with the conductive rGO phase, thereby constructing a double BIEFs system. Under alternating electromagnetic fields, the triggered BIEFs rationally tunes the electron transport behavior at the heterointerfaces, enhancing the polarization relaxation phenomenon. The 3D network structure of the aerogel can significantly enlarge the contact area of BIEF and enhance the Mott-Schottky effect. As anticipated, the prepared MSGM-10% composite aerogel demonstrates a maximum effective absorption bandwidth (EAB max ) value of 6.56 GHz and a minimum reflection loss (RL min ) value of −67.50 dB at an extremely low filling ratio of 1.50%. Additionally, aerogel features light weight, good hydrophobicity, and stable thermal insulation performance, showcasing remarkable environmental adaptability and promising broad application prospects in electromagnetic protection and military stealth technologies.

Tailoring the crumpled structures of a polyamide membrane with a heterostructural MXene-TiO2 interlayer for high water permeability

Jiawei Fu,Hang Xu,Tao Lin,Ao Wang,Anqi Wang,Chen Yao,Weihang Chen,Mingmei Ding,Chunxia Geng,Li Gao

Thin-film composite (TFC) nanofiltration (NF) membrane having excellent permeability and desired rejection is needed for water reuse and desalination . However, it remains a tremendous challenge to boost permeability while sustaining the rejection of the membrane. Herein, a novel TFC NF membrane possessing a thin and crumpled polyamide (PA) selective layer was fabricated using heterostructural MXene-TiO 2 as interlayer through a conventional interfacial polymerization (IP) reaction. The heterostructural MXene-TiO 2 was obtained by the in situ MXene oxidation with peroxymonosulfate (PMS), which effectively regulated the nanostructure of the interlayer and avoided the over-stacking of the nanosheets , promoting the rapid transport of water molecules. Moreover, the large specific area and numerous edges of MXene-TiO 2 boosted the adsorption and release of amine monomers on the substrates, facilitating the crumpled structure formation. In this way, the obtained membrane with 30.25 nm in thickness achieved a 98.29 % rejection for MgSO 4 and an enhanced water permeance of 11.10 L m −2  h −1  bar −1 , about 2.5 times that of TFC 0 NF membrane. Our work presents a novel approach of feasibility to engineer a TFC NF membrane with outstanding performance for water treatment .

Boosted CO2 photoreduction performance on Ru-Ti3CN MXene-TiO2 photocatalyst synthesized by non-HF Lewis acidic etching method

Qijun Tang,Peiyao Xiong,Haiqiang Wang,Zhongbiao Wu

Photocatalytic CO 2 reduction to produce value-added products is considered a promising solution to solve the global energy crisis and the greenhouse effect. In this study, Ti 3 CN MXene was synthesized using a Lewis acidic etching method without the usage of toxic hydrofluoric acid (HF). Ti 3 CN MXene was then used as a support for the in situ hydrothermal growth of TiO 2 and Ru nanoparticles. In the presence of 0.5 wt% Ru, Ru-Ti 3 CN-TiO 2 shows CO and CH 4 production rates of 99.58 and 8.97 μmol/g, respectively, in 5 h under Xenon lamp irradiation, more than 20.5 and 9.3 times that of commercial P25. The enhancement in photocatalytic activity was attributed to the synergy between the in-situ growth of TiO 2 on Ti 3 CN MXene and Ru nanoparticles. It was proven experimentally that Ti 3 CN MXene can provide abundant pathways for electron transfer. The separation and transfer of the photo-induced charge were further increased with the help of Ru and Ti 3 CN MXene, leaving more electrons to participate in the subsequent CO 2 reduction reaction. We believe that this work will encourage more attention to designing environment-friendly MXene-based photocatalysts for CO 2 photoreduction using the non-HF method.

A two-dimensional Ti3C2TX MXene@TiO2/MoS2 heterostructure with excellent selectivity for the room temperature detection of ammonia

Xu Tian,Lijia Yao,Xiuxiu Cui,Rongjun Zhao,Ting Chen,Xuechun Xiao,Yude Wang

Two-dimensional nanomaterials have exhibited considerable potential for gas sensing applications in recent years owing to their unique physical and chemical properties such as a large surface-to-volume ratio, abundant edge sites, versatile surface chemistry, etc. Herein, we demonstrate a two-dimensional Ti3C2TX MXene@TiO2/MoS2 nanocomposite gas sensor for ammonia detection at room temperature. MoS2 nanosheets are grown on an etched Ti3C2TX MXene surface by a hydrothermal method, and rectangular TiO2 particles are derived from Ti3C2TX MXene in the hydrothermal process. Meanwhile, nanocomposites with different Ti3C2TX MXene additions are also designed for gas sensing performance comparison. Such a novel hierarchical structure based gas sensor (MTM-0.2 sensor) exhibits fast response/recovery time and excellent long-term stability to ammonia. Meanwhile, outstanding selectivity to ammonia against triethylamine, trimethylamine, n-butanol, acetone, formaldehyde, and nitrogen dioxide at room temperature is also shown. The sensor shows 1.79-fold and 2.75-fold enhancement in the gas sensing response toward 100 ppm ammonia compared with the pristine Ti3C2TX MXene and MoS2 gas sensors, respectively. And its detection limit for ammonia is 500 ppb. The sensing mechanisms of the Ti3C2TX MXene@TiO2/MoS2 nanocomposites toward ammonia are attributed to the layered nanostructure, p–n heterojunction created at the interface of p-type Ti3C2TX MXene and n-type MoS2. Finally, density-functional theory (DFT) is performed to investigate the adsorption behavior and charge transfer of ammonia molecules on the surface of the nanocomposite. The synthesized Ti3C2TX MXene@TiO2/MoS2 nanocomposite can be regarded as a promising candidate for high-performance ammonia detection at room temperature.
