Facile fabrication of a novel self-healing and flame-retardant hydrogel/MXene coating for wood

Zhao Xiaojiong,Tian Min,Wei Ruichao,Jiang Saihua

To improve flame retardancy of wood, a novel high-water-retention and self-healing polyvinyl alcohol/phytic acid/MXene hydrogel coating was developed through facile one-pot heating and freeze–thaw cycle methods, and then painted on wood surface. The coating exhibit excellent self-healing property and significantly enhanced water-retention property (water content ≥ 90 wt%), due to the increased hydrogen bonds within the coating system with the presence of MXene nanosheets. Compared to pristine wood, the flame retardancy of coated wood is greatly improved, such as passed V0 rating in UL-94 test, increasing time to ignition (TTI, from 32 to 69 s), and decreased heat release rate and total heat release by 41.6% and 36.14%. The cooling effect and large thermal capacity of high-water-retention hydrogel, and physical barrier effects for flammable gas products, heat and oxygen by MXene nanosheets and the compact char layer formed during combustion play key roles in the flame retardancy enhancements of the wood. High thermal stability of MXene nanosheets is another beneficial factor. The detailed flame-retardant and self-healing mechanisms were proposed.

Superhydrophobic MXene Coating with Biomimetic Structure for Self-Healing Photothermal Deicing and Photoelectric Detector

Lun Zhang,Huiyuan Zhang,Xiangtian Yu,Liqiang Xu,Dong Wang,Xingyuan Lu,Aimin Zhang

Two-dimensional transition metal carbides (Ti3C2Tx MXene) have emerged as new candidates for applications in multifunctional devices owing to their outstanding performance. However, these electronic devices are easily disturbed by water, breakage, oxidation during use, and limited energy resources. To solve these problems, herein, inspired by nature, a novel superhydrophobic, healable photothermal deicing and photodetector (SHPP) with a “papillary structure” is successfully fabricated for the first time, by a simple layer-by-layer assembly spraying process with 0D/1D/2D nanomaterials. As a result, the superhydrophobic modified 2D MXene coating (FM coating) on the SHPP sensor exhibits outstanding self-cleaning, long-term durability (>20 days), as well as excellent photothermal deicing performances under near-infrared light. Meanwhile, the unique semiembedded nano-ZnO/1D silver nanowire supports the sensor with desirable photoelectric performance with UV light and a fast response time (∼1 s), and good cycle stability. Moreover, benefiting from the transparent self-healing substrate, the photothermal deicing and photodetector properties can be restored at room temperature. The bioinspired structures and function mechanisms offer SHPP sensors great potential for the utilization of clean light energy, sensing, self-cleaning, anti-icing, and so forth.

Simultaneous improvement of wetting resistance and permeability in membrane distillation using MXene-foam coating layer with heterostructural channels

Anqi Wang,Wei Chen,Xiaomeng Lan,Mingmei Ding

To alleviate global water scarcity , membrane distillation (MD) has been identified as a promising technology for desalination . However, there exists a trade-off effect between membrane permeability and anti-wetting performance, impeding the intensive application of MD. To address this problem, inspired by the ion-sieving effect and the special nanostructure of aquaporins to break the trade-off between permeability and selectivity , a porous MXene coating layer with heterostructural channels in fusiform shape was designed on a PVDF membrane through a hydrazine-induced approach. The coating layer was in a foam shape with hydrophobic surfaces and outstanding stability in water. The delicate-designed fusiform channels endowed the membrane with enhanced permeability (the average flux of the optimum modified membrane was 55.59 kg/m 2 h with a temperature gradient of 60 °C (feed temperature: 70 °C and permeate temperature: 10 °C) and flow velocity of 400 ml/min, nearly 2.5 times as high as that of the virgin membrane) and resistance to simultaneous sault induced and foulant-induced wetting performance. This paper proposed a novel strategy for engineering porous nanostructures with dual-spacing channels on the membrane surface to ensure high permeability and stable excellent desalination performance.

A highly sensitive, foldable and wearable pressure sensor based on MXene-coated airlaid paper for electronic skin

Di-Jie Yao,Zhenhua Tang,Li Zhang,Zhi-Gang Liu,Qi-Jun Sun,Song-Cheng Hu,Qiu-Xiang Liu,Xin-Gui Tang,Jianyong Ouyang

Electronic textiles (E-textiles) have received extensive attention for use in human motion detection, wearable electronics, and artificial intelligence. However, fabrication costs and methodology are still key issues preventing the commercialization of highly sensitive and wearable sensors. Here, simple to prepare low-cost conductive MXene-coated airlaid paper (MXene AP) sensors were fabricated via a dip-coating technique for use as electronic skin. The two-layer MXene AP sensors with a three-dimensional structure display high sensitivity (7.65 kPa−1 at 0–3.3 kPa), a broad sensing range (up to 300 kPa), and a stable response for more than 1000 cycles, presenting good sensitivity, repeatability, and durability, and their mechanism was investigated. Furthermore, origami technology can be used to fold MXene AP into an arbitrary shape with good sensing performance, and multistate conformational changes and simulated human touch can also be detected using the resultant three-dimensional (3D) MXene AP sensors. The wearable MXene AP sensors can be used to monitor human body motion and to collect human physical signals sensitively and accurately in the form of electronic skin. These strategies of folding and layering textile-decorated conductive nanomaterials provide a reference for next-generation textile-based wearable electronics and electronic skin.

MXene-Coated Porous Films Prepared by Breathing Figure Method for Efficient Solar Steam Generation

Qianzhi Chen,Yuxuan Liu,Anli Yi,Zhongyan Man,Rui Jiao,Hanxue Sun,Jiyan Li,An Li

The interfacial solar steam generation for seawater desalination has attracted attention because of its excellent photothermal performance and efficiency. However, the process of preparing evaporators is often complex and costly, which limits their further practicality. Here, we report an integrated solar evaporator that is easy to prepare and has good salt resistance. The porous structure of poly(methyl methacrylate) and polycarbonate (PMMA–PC) films prepared by the breathing figure (BF) method was used as the upper layer, while MXene was deposited on the as-resulted PMMA–PC film and served as a light absorption layer. Meanwhile, the hydrophilicity of the lower layer of expanded polyethylene (EPE) foam can promote the upward transfer of water and inhibit heat loss. Under one solar irradiation, the water evaporation rate of the composite film was found to be 1.79 kg m–2 h–1 in distilled water and 1.67 kg m–2 h–1 in a 15 wt % NaCl solution, exhibiting excellent evaporation performance and salt resistance. In addition, the PMMA–PC/MXene films exhibit excellent mechanical properties. Based on these merits of the PMMA–PC/MXene solar generator, it may find useful applications in practical solar interfacial evaporation. Moreover, the findings of this investigation may provide a new opportunity for the rational design of large-aperture photothermal conversion materials via a simple breathing figure method.

Multi-modal heat rechargeable phase change composites based on MXene coated core-sheath fiber strategy

Mingjie Wang,Yi Liu,Gui Yang,Tiantian Xiang,Youxin Ji,Fengmei Su,Chuntai Liu

In order to maintain the human body temperature within a comfortable range in harsh environments, flexible and wearable thermal management fabrics that can combine energy storage and multi-modal heat recharging ability are urgently needed. Here, a strategy of coaxial electrospinning and spray coating was proposed to prepare the MXene-coated core-sheath phase change fibers to satisfy the above requirement. The hierarchical structure endows the composite film with phase change energy storage and photo/electro-thermal multi-modal heat charging performance. Specifically, the encapsulated paraffin wax (PW) in flexible polyurethane (PU) fibers has a high enthalpy value of 91.7 J/g, meanwhile, the flexible film exhibits excellent photo-thermal performance conversion capability (up to 40 °C under the irradiation intensity of 30 mW/cm 2 ) and electro-thermal conversion capability (up to 40 °C at the voltage of 1.5 V) at extremely low MXene loading (0.23 mg cm −2 ), which endows the MXene/PU@PW (MPP) ability of “heat recharging” by low light power density or low voltage. The multifunctional fabrics with phase change function and multi-modal heat recharging capacity exhibit great potential application in the design of wearable personal thermal management.

Lightweight double-layer structured ANF/MXene aerogel film with electromagnetic interference shielding and dynamic infrared camouflage

Shen Yong,Li Guojie,Cheng Yajie,Li Yahong,Alhadhrami A.,Fallatah Ahmed M.,Alshammari Dalal A.,Zhou Bing,Feng Yuezhan,Liu Chuntai

Developing a multifunctional protection material compatible with infrared (IR) stealth and electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding is urgently required but challenging to ensure special human safety and maintain the smooth operation of electronic equipment. Herein, it is designed and fabricated a double-layered ANF/MXene film containing a thermally insulated aramid nanofiber (ANF) aerogel and low emissivity MXene coating with integrated long-term thermal camouflage at elevated temperatures and highly efficient EMI shielding capability. In this system, the lower aerogel film can act as a barrier to insulate heat transfer through its novel skin–core structure under ultralow directional thermal conduction, while the upper Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene coating can provide a very low emissivity surface and highly conductive network. Owing to its unique double-layer structure, the ANF/MXene film demonstrates a significant EMI shielding effectiveness of 43.6 dB and a remarkably low emissivity of 0.24, delivering excellent IR stealth performance across various ambient temperatures. This research lays the foundation for the creation of versatile protective materials that have great potential for use in both military and civilian contexts.

Mechanically strong, flexible, and flame-retardant Ti3C2Tx MXene-coated aramid paper with superior electromagnetic interference shielding and electrical heating performance

Bin Yang,Haoran Wang,Meiyun Zhang,FengFeng Jia,Yuanqing Liu,Zhaoqing Lu

Undesirable electromagnetic interference (EMI) created by modern electronic devices has detrimental effects on the performance of high-precision electronic devices, information security, and human health. Therefore, lightweight, flexible, robust, and easy-to-fabricate EMI shielding materials with integrated functions are highly desirable to combat electromagnetic pollution. Herein, we report a scalable and facile strategy to prepare a flexible Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene-coated aramid paper (MAP) with high-efficiency EMI shielding and excellent electrical heating performance. The intertwined network by aramid fibers endows the aramid paper (AP) with superior mechanical properties. After selectively single/dual coating with MXene onto AP, the MAP maintains a superior tensile strength of 73.6 MPa and enormous folding endurance of 4156 times. Owing to the exceptional electrical conductivity of MXene, the MAP with a relatively low MXene content (∼9.0 wt%) exhibits excellent overall performance with an EMI shielding effectiveness (SE) of 38 dB and SE/t of 422.2 dB mm −1 . It’s noteworthy that the EMI SE of the MAP remains almost unchanged (37.4 dB) even after experiencing 5,000 repeated bending cycles. Additionally, the MAP shows satisfactory Joule electric-heating capability (a heating temperature rise of 130 °C at a low driving voltage of 5 V) and excellent flame-retardancy. This work provides a feasible strategy for large-scale production of flexible EMI shielding paper with multifunctional properties for future wearable facilities.

MXene-coated conductive composite film with ultrathin, flexible, self-cleaning for high-performance electromagnetic interference shielding

Yanting Wang,Hao-Kai Peng,Ting-Ting Li,Bing-Chiuan Shiu,Hai-Tao Ren,Xuefei Zhang,Ching-Wen Lou,Jia-Horng Lin

With the expanding utilization and development electronic devices, electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials with good flexibility and lightweight have been desired to eliminate the radiation pollution. However, many EMI shielding materials are usually limited in practical application due to the large thickness and poor mechanical properties. Herein, ultra-thin and lightweight conductive composite films with both unique undulating layered structure and sandwich structure were constructed via a simple solution dip-coating method. The PAN@TiO 2 (PT) film as a substrate endowed the Ti 3 C 2 Tx film a certain strength, the polydopamine was decorated on the PT film surface to enhance the combination fastness of the PT film and Ti 3 C 2 Tx, and the Ti 3 C 2 Tx sheets built a conductive network. The conductive composite film (high tensile strength of 93.55 MPa) possessed an average EMI shielding effectiveness (SE) of 32 dB and a specific SE of 4085.92 dB cm 2 /g owing to their excellent electrical conductivity of 92.68 S/cm. The bio-inspired strategy provides a promising approach in fabricating flexible and ultrathin composite materials for highly efficient EMI shielding applications. Furthermore, this strategy offers a feasible idea for preparing multifunctional films.

Guifang He,Lili Wang,Xiaojing Bao,Zhiwei Lei,Fanggang Ning,Meng Li,Xiansheng Zhang,Lijun Qu

Flexible wearable heaters have received increasing attention in energy-saving, diverse personal thermal requirements, and healthcare management. Herein, considering the fire safety application of wearable heaters, the biodegradable alginate fibers and flame retardant (FR) viscose fibers are attempted to mix and weft-knit into the fabric, which interestingly exhibits synergetic flame retardancy with low afterflame time, afterglow time, and peak heat release rate . Further, assisted by the highly conductive Ti 3 C 2 T x (MXene) nanosheets on the surface of the fabric and the periodic nested loops of the knitted fabric, the integrated fabrics possess excellent electrical performance (2Ω sq −1 ) with the MXene content of 9.13 wt%, electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding efficiency of 55 dB in the X band , preferable Joule heating performance under safe low voltage (123 °C at 3.5 V) and sunlight/far-infrared heating performance. The superior flame retardancy and multifunctional properties arose from the high-temperature induced well-constructed char layer, unique functionality of interconnected MXene network and multiple scattering of light or wave. Combined with the superior flame retardancy and multifunctional properties, the weft-knitted alginate/FR viscose fabrics with MXene coating become the ideal candidate materials in the fields of wearable heaters with high safety.

Spray-Applied MXene Coatings on Metal–Organic Framework Monoliths for Adaptive All-Day Atmospheric Water Harvesting at Mitigated Energy Cost

Qiannan Wu,Zhiqiang Feng,Xingfu Zhou,Haiqing Li

All-day atmospheric water harvesting (AWH) using metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) presents an appealing approach for achieving high-yield water production in arid regions. However, current all-day MOF-based AWH strategies often involve intricate material preparation procedures and high energy input for water desorption, raising concerns about the water production cost. Leveraging the naturally abundant solar energy available in arid areas, herein, sprayable Ti3C2 MXene/silane-decorated hyperbranched polymer solutions (Ti3C2/sHBP) are presented. These solutions enable easy formation of robust, spray-applied coatings on monolithic MOFs upon exposure to sunlight, resulting in monolithic Ti3C2/sHBP-coated MOFs (TCM). The presence of Ti3C2/sHBP coatings equips TCMs with dual solar and electrical heating capabilities, enabling adaptive all-day AWH based on sunlight availability: solar heating-driven AWH when sufficient sunlight is present, combined solar/electrical heating-driven AWH when sunlight is insufficient, and electrical heating-driven AWH during periods without sunlight. Compared to traditional electrical heating-driven AWH, this adaptive all-day AWH delivers a similar water production performance with a 28.8% reduction in energy consumption for water desorption. Imparting MOF monoliths with dual heating functionality through a straightforward spray-applied coating demonstrates a novel, facile, and cost-effective strategy for enabling adaptive all-day AWH with excellent water productivity at a significantly mitigated energy cost.

MXene-Coated Wrinkled Fabrics for Stretchable and Multifunctional Electromagnetic Interference Shielding and Electro/Photo-Thermal Conversion Applications

Jingwen Dong,Shilu Luo,Senpeng Ning,Gui Yang,Duo Pan,Youxin Ji,Yuezhan Feng,Fengmei Su,Chuntai Liu

Stretchability and multifunctional heating abilities are highly desired for wearable electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding fabrics to tackle the growing electromagnetic pollution for special crowd, such as pregnant women. Herein, we fabricated stretchable MXene-coated thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) fabrics by simple uniaxial prestretching and spraying methods. The obtained unique wrinkled structure endowed the film with effective strain-invariant electrical conductivity and EMI shielding properties. Specifically, the prepared stretchable film with an extremely low MXene loading (0.417 mg cm–2) exhibited a stable EMI shielding effectiveness of approximately 30 dB under 50% tensile strain and durability during stretching and bending cycles. More importantly, owing to the high electrical conductivity and localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect of the MXene layer, the stretchable fabrics exhibited excellent Joule heating (up to 104 °C at a voltage of 5 V) and superior photothermal conversion abilities. Moreover, the unique wrinkled MXene-coating layer not only endows the fabrics with stretchable heat abilities but also enhances the photothermal conversion performance by increasing the light absorption area and travel path. We believe that this study offers a novel strategy for the versatile design of stretchable and multifunctional wearable shielding fabrics.
