Ultrathin 2D–2D MXene-LDH Interlayer with High Polysulfide Adsorption Ability for Advanced Li–S Batteries

Shiwei Ge,Qian Zhao,Yaoyang Liu,Fangfang Wang,Guijuan Wei,Yu Liu,Bin Xu

Lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries are considered as promising energy storage systems due to the high energy density of 2600 W h kg–1. However, the practical application of Li–S batteries is hindered by the inadequate conductivity of sulfur and Li2S, as well as the shuttle effect caused by polysulfides during the charge–discharge process. Introducing a conductive interlayer between the cathode and the separator to physically resist polysulfides represents an effective and straightforward approach to mitigate the shuttle effect in Li–S batteries. In this paper, an ultrathin (<1 μm) 2D–2D MXene-LDH interlayer with high polysulfide adsorption ability was introduced to Li–S batteries. The synergistic effect between MXene and layered double hydroxide greatly improved the adsorption effect of the interlayers: the conductive Ti3C2Tx MXene chemically adsorbs polysulfides and promotes their fast transfer, and the NiCo-LDH alleviates the restack of MXene and facilitates Li+ diffusion. After inserting the MXene-LDH interlayer, the Li–S batteries exhibit an enhanced specific capacity of 1137.6 mA h g–1 at 0.1 C and retain 622.6 mA h g–1 after 100 cycles. The ultrathin 2D–2D interlayer offers a feasible way for the development of highly efficient and lightweight interlayers in Li–S batteries.

Facile strategy to synthesize MXene@LDH nanohybrids for boosting the flame retardancy and smoke suppression properties of epoxy

Keqing Zhou,Kaili Gong,Feiyan Gao,Lian Yin

The creation of high-efficient MXene-based flame retardants to cope with the fire hazards of polymer composites remained an intractable challenge. Hence, this work explored a facile strategy to synthesize MXene-based nanohybrids (MXene@LDH) by in situ growth of layered double hydroxides (CoAl-LDH) on the surface of MXene in anticipation of constructing an efficient flame retardant system. The results indicated that the integration of LDH prevented the stacking of MXene nanosheets and enhanced the dispersion of MXene in EP matrix, endowing EP composites with excellent thermal properties and flame retardancy. With the addition of 2 wt% MXene@LDH, EP composites exhibited reduced the maximum mass loss rate (R max ) of 28.5%, increased residual char and led to 25.3% reduction in PHRR and a drop of 24.4% in THR, compared to those of neat EP. Furthermore, EP/2 wt% MXene@LDH composites also demonstrated superior smoke suppression performance, mainly reflected by the 38.5%, 37.8%, 33.8% and 31.2% reduction in PSPR, TSP, PCO and PCO 2 , respectively, together with a 52.0% decline in smoke factor (SF), compared to those of pure EP. The improved fire safety of EP composites was attributed to the catalytic charring and attenuation effect of the transition metal oxides , coupled with the barrier effect of the nanosheets and the cooling effect, gas-phase dilution effect of LDH.

Interfacially engineered MXene-LDH 2D/2D heterostructures for integrated microwave absorption and corrosion protection

Tian Li,Li Ma,Tanlin Chen,Tian Yang,Renchi Qin,Yao Zou,Aming Xie,Fanbin Meng

Achieving simultaneous electromagnetic wave attenuation and long-term corrosion resistance remains a major challenge for MXene-based absorbers, owing to their intrinsic susceptibility to harsh environments and impedance mismatch. In this work, we demonstrate a 2D/2D stacked Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene/ZnCo–MoO 4 layered double hydroxide (LDH) heterostructure, prepared through electrostatic self-assembly followed by ion-exchange modification. The interlocked nanosheet architecture promotes enhanced interfacial polarization and optimized impedance matching, leading to a strong reflection loss of −46.9 dB and a broad effective absorption bandwidth of 5.7 GHz at a thickness of only 2.1 mm. Meanwhile, the LDH component provides dual functionality as a physical barrier and an ion reservoir, enabling sustained release of Zn 2+ and MoO 4 2− species to suppress corrosion processes. The optimized coating exhibits an impedance modulus up to 9.31 × 10 8 Ω cm 2 and a protection efficiency of 99.97% after 21 days of salt-spray exposure. Electromagnetic simulations and arched-frame experiments further validate the stability of the composite under operational conditions. This multifunctional strategy bridges the gap between high-efficiency microwave absorption and environmental durability, offering practical prospects for aerospace, marine, and defense applications.

Electrochemical behavior and anti-corrosion property of Ti3C2Tx MXene/LDH heterostructured coating on aluminum alloy

Wenhu Jia,Huaijie Cao,Tiange Wang,Yulin Min,Qunjie Xu

Two-dimensional (2D) materials show potential applications in anti-corrosion on metals in aggressive medium. However, it remains a challenge in uniform dispersion, complex functionalization, and structure control of 2D nanosheets in composite coatings . Herein, a Ti 3 C 2 T x /layered double hydroxide (LDH) heterostructured coating for corrosion protection on Al alloy is proposed by in situ growth and dip coating process . Without complex functionalization, dispersion, and structure control, the heterostructured coating provides an enhanced corrosion resistance confirmed by electrochemical tests and microstructure characterization . As a result, the incorporation of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene can decrease the corrosion current density by ~40-fold and increase the coating resistance by 54-fold compared to bare Al alloy. Furthermore, the Ti 3 C 2 T x /LDH coating still exhibits a self-healing ability after immersion in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution over 3 days, thereby providing long-term corrosion protection on Al alloy for 30 days. The protective behavior is attributed to the blocking effect and the feature of participating in electrochemical corrosion reaction and losing electrons of 2D MXene prior to the metal. This strategy provides a facile and effective approach to designing 2D materials-based anticorrosion coatings on Al alloy used in aggressive environments.

Optimizing the electron spin state of hierarchical NiCo2O4@MXene@LDH 3D composite electrode by heterointerface engineering to enhance energy density and excellent cyclic stability of supercapacitor

Jianghong You,Yiming Yuan,Chen Zhang,Haoming Xu,Mingyao Chen,Ying Wang,Dongsheng Chen

The transition metal oxide of nickel cobaltite (NiCo 2 O 4 ) has gained more and more attention from battery industry for its excellent properties of high capacitance and cycling stability. However, its performance when used in supercapacitors is compromised due to its limited active sites and poor conductivity. Herein, a 3D (three-dimensional) hierarchical and high-performance material of NiCo 2 O 4 @MXene@LDH (LDH: layered double hydroxide) composite was designed and synthesized. In the material, NiCo 2 O 4 nanorods form a skeleton of nanosheet arrays on layered MXene; and on the nanosheet arrays, NiCo-LDH nanoparticles are attached to form a 3D hierarchical structure, extending the electrochemically active sites, suppressing the agglomeration of NiCo-LDH and producing hierarchical channels that promote electron and ion transport. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and the results of Ultraviolet–visible (UV–Vis) spectrophotometry indicated that the introduction of MXene and NiCo-LDH induces a redistribution of the electronic states of NiCo 2 O 4 due to the formation of a heterointerface, thereby decreasing its bandgap by about 1.42 eV. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis further demonstrated the negative shift in the initial binding energies of nickel (Ni) and cobalt (Co) atoms, which is due to their transition of spin states; and this is in agreement with the high intensity of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) peak in the NiCo 2 O 4 @MXene@LDH composite. The in situ Raman analysis reveals that the enhanced energy storage performance originates from the accelerated formation and increased exposure of NiCoOOH active species during electrochemical cycling. The synergistic effect of MXene and NiCo-LDH introduced into NiCo 2 O 4 enhanced the supercapacitor in terms of power and energy densities. It was indicated that the supercapacitor fabricated from NiCo 2 O 4 @MXene@LDH supercapacitor exhibited a specific capacitance of 5066 F g −1 at 1 A g −1 , and a capacitance retention of 97.82 % after 10,000 charge cycles at 10 A g −1 . Moreover, an asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) device with a NiCo 2 O 4 @MXene@LDH//AC configuration was developed. The supercapacitor presented an energy density and power density of 70.11 Wh kg −1 and 850.22 W kg −1 , respectively. The redistribution of electronic states and decreased bandgap could facilitate the creation of NiCo 2 O 4 -based materials with customized features for supercapacitors.
