A Light-Driven Micromotor with Complex Motion Behaviors for Controlled Release

Yunyu Sun,Ye Liu,Bo Song,Hui Zhang,Ruomeng Duan,Dafeng Zhang,Bin Dong

Micromotor that exhibits various movement behaviors has attracted more attention in recent years. However, most researchers focus on its motion behavior and few have studied the fluid flow surrounding it. In this work, a novel micromotor with both controlled motion behavior and surrounding fluid flow, which is driven by near-infrared (NIR) light based on the unique Marangoni effect caused by the light irradiation of its constituent, i.e., polypyrrole (PPy), is reported. Interestingly, these motion behaviors and the surrounding fluid flow can be easily switched by adjusting the incident angle of the NIR laser. This unique property may have potentials in different fields. Among others, its application in remotely controlled targeted delivery and release is demonstrated.

A Facile Approach To Prepare Tough and Responsive Ultrathin Physical Hydrogel Films as Artificial Muscles

Ye Tian,Xiaoshuang Wei,Zhi Jian Wang,Pengju Pan,Fangyuan Li,Daishun Ling,Zi Liang Wu,Qiang Zheng

We report a facile approach to prepare ultrathin physical hydrogel films based on the Marangoni effect, which drives an ethanol solution of poly(stearyl acrylate-co-acrylic acid) (P(SA-co-AAc)) to rapidly spread on the water surface. The subsequent solvent exchange leads to sol–gel transition, where the long alkyl chains of SA units segregate to form physical cross-linking junctions. The resultant disk-shaped single-network (SN) gel films are uniform with tunable thickness (40–80 μm) and diameter (5–12 cm) and possess robust mechanical properties with tensile breaking stress, σb, and breaking strain, εb, being 0.3–1.1 MPa and 30–290%, respectively. The mechanical properties of SN gel films can be further improved by introducing ductile poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAm) into the preformed gel matrix, which forms strong hydrogen bonds with the first network. The obtained physical double-network (DN) hydrogel films are transparent and show excellent mechanical performances with σb of 3–5 MPa and εb of 100–500%. Due to the ultrathin thickness of gel films and response of PNIPAm to saline solutions, the tough DN gel films exhibit fast response (≤60 s) and large stroke force (0.5 MPa) after switching the environment from water bath to saline solution, making them an ideal material to design artificial muscles, soft actuators, and chemomechanical devices.

Surface Patterning of Two-Dimensional Nanostructure-Embedded Photothermal Hydrogels for High-Yield Solar Steam Generation

Yi Lu,Deqi Fan,Yida Wang,Haolan Xu,Chunhua Lu,Xiaofei Yang

Improving evaporation rate is extremely important to promote the application of solar steam generation in clean water production through seawater desalination. However, the theoretical evaporation rate limit of a normal two-dimensional (2D) photothermal evaporator is only about 1.46 kg m–2 h–1. While 3D evaporators can break the limit, they require much more raw materials. In this work, an effective approach for achieving high-yield solar steam generation via the synergy of 2D nanostructure-embedded all-in-one hybrid hydrogel evaporator and surface patterning is reported. This improved surface-patterned evaporator is able to simultaneously lower the enthalpy of vaporization and induce the Marangoni effect near the evaporation surface, thus delivering a high evaporation rate of 3.62 kg m–2 h–1, which is more than twice the theoretical limit of the normal 2D photothermal evaporator. This hybrid hydrogel offers a cost-effective and energy-efficient pathway to mitigate clean water shortages.

High-efficiency mass-transfer Marangoni cellulose hydrogel reactor for the degradation of pollutants

Xiao-Yi Xu,Lu Wan,Shi-Yi Lin,Xiao-Hui Yao,Wei-Guo Zhao,Tao Chen,Dong-Yang Zhang

Noble metal nanoparticles have been widely used in catalysis, environmental studies, and other fields. However, the loading of noble metals is challenging because of their unfavorable mass transfer. Herein, a simple, green dual-template method was developed for the synthesis of a Marangoni cellulose hydrogel rotor catalytic reactor (MCR). The rotor had a two-component asymmetrical network structure, which was constructed via different crosslinking methods and enabled the MCR to achieve a fast (6190 r/h) and prolonged (25 min) rotation. In addition, we propose a new refueling method, which only requires 80uL solvent to continue to drive the rotor for over 13 min, effectively prolonging the rotation time of the rotor. During rotation, the speed of the catalyst was greater than that of the substrate, which is conducive for the entry of the substrate into the reactor channel. The spin-induced fluid disturbance promoted substrate replenishment around the catalyst, thereby improving the mass-transfer efficiency and increasing the primary kinetic constant to 16.5-fold of that of the stationary hydrogel while maintaining stability. Therefore, the MCR proposed in this study offers a novel approach for improving the catalytic mass-transfer efficiency of precious metals and exhibits potential application value in remediating environmental pollution and catalysis.
