Synthesis of MIL-88B(Fe)/Matrimid mixed-matrix membranes with high hydrogen permselectivity

Yuanlong Xiao,Xiangyu Guo,Hongliang Huang,Qingyuan Yang,Aisheng Huang,Chongli Zhong

A cheap and biocompatible metal–organic framework MIL-88B(Fe) (MIL = Material Institut Lavoisier) was synthesized and incorporated into Matrimid® 5218 to fabricate mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs) for gas separation. Separation performances of the MIL-88B(Fe)/Matrimid MMMs were tested for the single gas permeation of H2 and CH4 as well as the mixture gas separation of an equimolar binary H2–CH4 mixture. Due to the molecular sieving effect, the incorporation of MIL-88B(Fe) can enhance H2 permeability but hinder the transport of CH4 in MIL-88B(Fe)/Matrimid MMMs, thus resulting in enhanced separation selectivity of H2–CH4. At 298 K and ΔP = 3.0 bar, compared with those of a pure polymeric membrane, the H2 permeability and H2–CH4 mixture separation factor of MMMs with a MIL-88B(Fe) loading of 10% increased by 16% and 66%, respectively. In addition, the operation temperature has a significantly positive effect on the separation of a H2–CH4 mixture.

Microporous Matrimid/PIM-1 Thin Film Composite Membranes with Narrow Pore Size Distribution used for Molecular Separation in Organic Solvents

Jiaqi Li,Weilin Feng,Mengxiao Zhang,Xiaohe Wang,Chuanjie Fang,Jianyu Wang,Lin Zhang,Liping Zhu

Polymers of intrinsic microporosity (PIMs) are a class of microporous organic materials that contain interconnected pores of less than 2 nm in diameter. Such materials are of great potential used in membranes for molecular separation, such as drug fractionation in pharmaceutical industry. However, the PIMs membranes are often susceptible to low separation selectivity toward different molecules due to their wide pore size distribution. Herein, a linear polyimide, Matrimid, is incorporated with PIM-1 (a typical member of PIMs) by solution blending, and the blends are dip-coated onto a polyimide P84 support membrane to prepare thin-film composite (TFC) membranes to control pore size distribution while keep high microporosity. The component miscibility, pore characteristics, and molecular separation performances of the Matrimid/PIM-1 TFC membranes are investigated in detail. The Matrimid and PIM-1 are partially miscible due to their similar Hansen solubility parameters. The Matrimid endows the selective layers (coatings) with narrower pore size distribution due to more compact chain packing. The prepared Matrimid/PIM-1 TFC membranes show high selectivity for separation of riboflavin (80% of retention) and isatin (only 5% of retention). The developed membranes exhibit great potential for separating molecules with different molecular weights.

Constructing CO2 transport passageways in Matrimid® membranes using nanohydrogels for efficient carbon capture

Xueqin Li,Meidi Wang,Shaofei Wang,Yifan Li,Zhongyi Jiang,Ruili Guo,Hong Wu,XingZhong Cao,Jing Yang,Baoyi Wang

Composite membranes were fabricated by incorporating poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) nanohydrogels (NHs) into Matrimid ® 5218 matrix to improve the separation performance for CO 2 /CH 4 and CO 2 /N 2 mixtures. The membranes were characterized by a fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), tensile test, dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS), the static contact angle and water content measurement. The incorporation of nanohydrogels increased the fractional free volume of the composite membranes, water uptake and water retention capacity. The composite membranes displayed better performance than the pure Matrimid ® membrane. The nanohydrogels homogeneously embedded in the Matrimid ® matrix acted as water reservoirs to not only provide more water for dissolving CO 2 , but also construct interconnected CO 2 transport passageways. The as-prepared Matrimid ® /NHs-20 composite membrane showed CO 2 /CH 4 and CO 2 /N 2 selectivities of 61 and 52 with a CO 2 permeability of 278 Barrer, surpassing or being close to the 2008 Robeson upper bound lines.

Efficient N2/CH4 separation by mixed matrix membrane with bimetallic metal–organic framework

Wei Li,Jingyun Wang,Mengmeng Han,Shanshan Xu

Obtaining pure clean energy methane (CH 4 , 3.80 Å) from natural gas is a great challenge task at present due to the similar kinetic diameter with nitrogen (N 2 , 3.64 Å). Herein, a well-defined rod-like bimetallic MOF (Cu 0.5 Ca 0.5 -SBMOF) with an excellent adsorption performance for CH 4 was successfully prepared and blended as filler with Matrimid® 5218 (PI) for preparing mixed matrix membranes (Cu 0.5 Ca 0.5 -SBMOF@PI MMMs). In the separation experiment of N 2 /CH 4 binary gas mixture, both filler loadings and trans -membrane pressure have significant effects on the separation performance of MMMs. When the filler loading is 20 wt%, Cu 0.5 Ca 0.5 -SBMOF@PI MMMs exhibits an excellent separation performance with a separation factor of CH 4 /N 2 up to 17.03, and the permeability of 22.57 barrer for N 2 , which significantly preceded the most reported MMMs. Moreover, the prepared MMMs also show excellent stability. This work has taken an important step towards practical application in the field of separating N 2 /CH 4 gas mixture using MMMs method.
