In this study, Medulla tetrapanacis (MT), a kind of herbaceous plant, was modified by phosphoric acid (H 3 PO 4 ) and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) to obtain the adsorbent MT-H 3 PO 4 -CTAB. It could quickly and efficiently remove the anionic azo dyes, Congo Red (CR) and Ponceau S (Po.S), from solution. For 500 mg/L CR and 150 mg/L Po.S dye solution, the removal efficiency could reach 84.52% and 95.29% within 10 min, and the maximum adsorption capacities of MT-H 3 PO 4 -CTAB towards CR and Po.S were 719.42 mg/g and 230.94 mg/g at 303 K, respectively. The effects of initial pH of the solution, temperature, initial dye concentration, and contact time were optimized. The adsorption process followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, and the equilibrium adsorption data fitted the Langmuir isotherm well. Moreover, thermodynamic studies indicated that the adsorption of two anionic azo dyes was spontaneous. The adsorption of CR onto MT-H 3 PO 4 -CTAB was endothermic while the adsorption of Po.S was exothermic. Molecular interactions, such as electrostatic attraction and hydrogen bonding between dyes molecules and adsorbent, play an important role in the adsorption process. This study demonstrates that acid-activated and surfactant-modified herbaceous plant adsorbent has a simple preparation process and exhibits excellent adsorption properties for anionic azo dyes, which could extend the potential applicability for biomass.

A novel lignocellulosic aerogel, MT-LCA, was successfully prepared from MT by undergoing partial dissolution in an ionic liquid, coagulation in water, freezing in liquid nitrogen, and subsequent freeze-drying. The MT-LCA preserves its original honeycomb-like porous structure, and the newly formed micropores contribute to increased porosity and specific surface area. FT-IR analysis reveals that MT, after dissolution and coagulation, experiences no chemical reactions. However, a change in the crystalline structure of cellulose is observed, transitioning from cellulose I to cellulose II. Both MT and MT-LCA demonstrate a quasi-second-order kinetic process during methylene blue adsorption, indicative of chemical adsorption. The Langmuir model proves to be more appropriate for characterizing the methylene blue adsorption process. Both adsorbents exhibit monolayer adsorption, and their effective adsorption sites are uniformly distributed. The higher porosity, nanoscale micropores, and larger pore size in MT-LCA enhance its capillary force, providing efficient directional transport performance. Consequently, the prepared MT-LCA displays exceptional compressive performance and efficient directional transport capabilities, making it well-suited for applications requiring high compressive performance and selective directional transport.

Biochar (BC) prepared from Medulla Tetrapanacis was recognized as having potential in environmental remediation because of its porous texture, abundant chemical surface groups and mineral composition. In this study, a novel modified biochar (KBC) derived from Medulla Tetrapanacis achieved efficient adsorption of Congo red (CR) and methylene blue (MB). Characterization results suggested that the modification had little effect on the group distribution of KBC, but a dramatic expansion of specific surface area was observed on KBC (1180.45 m 2 /g) compared to BC (198.51 m 2 /g). KBC exhibited a maximum sorption of 584.17 mg/g for CR and 318.01 mg/g for MB. Kinetic and isotherm studies revealed sorption of CR and MB by KBC was chemosorption, which occurred on the monolayer surface. The comprehensive analysis also provided the basis for the application of KBC to practical production. These outcomes suggested that KBC may become a new option for the effluent treatment.

Medulla Tetrapanacis (MT) is traditionally consumed as herbal soup to manage mastitis. Although scientific evidence supports its anti-inflammatory effect, no study has investigated its effect on ulcerative colitis (UC). This study aimed to investigate the effect of MT water extract and its underlying mechanisms both in vitro and in vivo. Dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) was used to induce UC in zebrafish for assessing the effect of MT water extract on oxidative stress, inflammation, and migration of neutrophils. A DSS-induced UC mouse model was further employed to examine the effect of MT on oxidative stress, inflammation, macrophage phenotype, histopathology, and intestinal barrier integrity. Moreover, bone-marrow-derived macrophages (BMDMs) were used to elucidate the actions of MT on regulating polarization and energy metabolism. In vitro results showed that MT water extract significantly suppressed lipopolysaccharide and interferon-gamma-induced M1 polarization in BMDMs by reprogramming energy metabolism via suppressing hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α)/glycolysis. In zebrafish, MT water extract remarkably reduced neutrophil intestinal infiltration, reactive oxygen species generation, and expressions of pro-inflammatory genes (inducible nitric oxide synthase [ iNOS ], cyclooxygenase-2 [ COX-2 ], interleukin [ IL ] -6 , and IL-1β ) in DSS-induced UC. Furthermore, MT treatment alleviated symptoms and histopathological damage in DSS-induced UC in mice, restored the balance of M1/M2 macrophages in the colon, attenuated inflammation and oxidative stress, and preserved intestinal barrier integrity. In conclusion, MT water extract ameliorated DSS-induced UC by regulating macrophage polarization through reprogramming of energy metabolism via suppressing HIF-1α/glycolysis, suppressing oxidative stress, and maintaining intestinal barrier integrity. These findings support the application of MT for managing UC.
