Unveiling the Synergic Roles of Mg/Zr Co-Doping on Rate Capability and Cycling Stability of Li4Ti5O12

Zhenya Wang,Limei Sun,Wenyun Yang,Jinbo Yang,Kai Sun,Dongfeng Chen,Xiangfeng Liu

Li4Ti5O12 (LTO) has attracted great interest as an anode material due to the "zero strain" during Li+ insertion and extraction. But the intrinsic ionic diffusion coefficient and electronic conductivity are very poor. Herein, a strategy of Mg2+ and Zr4+ co-doping has been proposed to modulate the crystal structure and improve the electrochemical performances. More importantly, the synergic roles of Mg/Zr co-doping has been unveiled based on the analysis of X-ray diffraction, Neutron powder diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and electrochemical measurements. Firstly, Mg-Zr co-doping expands the lattice parameter, cell unit volume and even Li-O bond length, which reduces Li+ migration barrier and benefits to Li+ insertion/extraction. Secondly, Ti-O shrinkage induced by Mg-Zr co-doping enhances the structure stability and subsequently the cycle performance. Thirdly, Mg-Zr co-doping promotes more Ti4+/Ti3+ which facilitates electron conductivity. Moreover, Mg-Zr co-doping also decreases the polarization and charge transfer impedance. Li3.8Mg0.2Ti4.9Zr0.1O12 delivers a discharge capacity of 180.5, 150.7, 110.4 and 78.9 mAh/g at 0.2C, 1C, 5C and 10C, respectively. Moreover, the capacity retention is greatly increased from 57.9% of LTO to 98.59% at 10C after 500 cycles.

Transesterification of Glycerol to Glycerol Carbonate over Mg-Zr Composite Oxide Prepared by Hydrothermal Process

Yihao Li,Hepan Zhao,Wei Xue,Fang Li,Zhimiao Wang

A series of Mg-Zr composite oxide catalysts prepared by the hydrothermal process were used for the transesterification of glycerol (GL) with dimethyl carbonate (DMC) to produce glycerol carbonate (GC). The effects of the preparation method (co-precipitation, hydrothermal process) and Mg/Zr ratio on the catalytic performance were systematically investigated, and the deactivation of the catalyst was also explored. The Mg-Zr composite oxide catalysts were characterized by XRD, TEM, TPD, N2adsorption-desorption, and XPS. The characterization results showed that compared with the co-precipitation process, the catalyst prepared by the hydrothermal process has a larger specific surface area, smaller grain size, and higher dispersion. Mg1Zr2-HT catalyst calcined at 600 °C in a nitrogen atmosphere exhibited the best catalytic performance. Under the conditions of reaction time of 90 min, reaction temperature of 90 °C, catalyst dosage of 3 wt% of GL, and GL/DMC molar ratio of 1/5, the GL conversion was 99% with 96.1% GC selectivity, and the yield of GC was 74.5% when it was reused for the fourth time. Keywords:glycerol carbonate;transesterification;hydrothermal process;Mg-Zr oxides

Enhanced fluoride removal using Mg-Zr binary metal oxide nanoparticles confined in a strong-base anion exchanger

Chengqiang He,Yue Sun,Yingpeng Gu,Hongyu Ji

Generally, the pH of fluorinated groundwater or many industrial wastewater is neutral, while the majority of metal-modified adsorbents can work efficiently only under acidic conditions. In this study, we synthesized a novel hybrid adsorbent, Mg–Zr-D213, by loading nano-Mg/Zr binary metal (hydrogen) oxides in a strong-base anion exchanger, D213, to enhance the adsorption of fluoride from neutral water. Mg–Zr-D213 exhibited a better fluoride-removal capacity in neutral water than monometallic modified resins. Under the interference of competing anions and coexisting organic acids, Mg–Zr-D213 exhibited superior selectivity. The Langmuir model indicated that the fitted maximum sorption capacity of Mg–Zr-D213 was 41.38 mg/g. The results of column experiments showed that the effective treatment volume of Mg–Zr-D213 was 8–16-times higher than that of D213 for both synthetic groundwater and actual industrial wastewater, and that NaOH–NaCl eluent could effectively recover more than 95% of fluoride. Adsorption experiments with Mg/Zr metal (hydrogen) oxide particles and D213 separately demonstrated a synergistic effect between –N + (CH 3 ) 3 and Mg/Zr metal (hydrogen) oxide particles. The ligand exchange or metal-ligand interaction of Mg/Zr metal (hydrogen) oxide particles on fluoride was further demonstrated via X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Overall, Mg–Zr-D213 has great potential for enhanced fluoride removal in neutral water.

Preparation of heavy bio-oil-based porous carbon by pyrolysis gas activation and its performance in the aldol condensation for aviation fuel as catalyst carrier

Shanshan Shao,Tianrui Sun,Xiaohua Li,Yifan Wang,Laixin Ma,Zhufeng Liu,Shiliang Wu

Due to the high molecular weight, high viscosity and strong instability of heavy bio-oil from rape straw, it is necessary to explore new high-value utilization methods. Heavy bio-oil based carbon material (HBC) was prepared via carbonization and activation assisted by pyrolysis gas, and the basic Mg-Zr-O catalysts using HBC as the carrier (Mg-Zr-O/HBC) was synthesized for the aldol condensation of cyclopentanone to produce aviation fuel precursor. The effect of activation condition on the physicochemical properties of HBC and Mg-Zr-O/HBC were evaluated, the evolution of gas component before and after activation was explored, and the catalytic performance of Mg-Zr-O/HBC in the aldol condensation of cyclopentanone for the synthesis of aviation fuel was tested. Instead of traditional KOH activation, pyrolysis gas activation was beneficial for the reduced pollution and increased calorific value of the gas, making it an environmentally friendly method. The results showed that the activation of biochar (BOC) was improved with lower pyrolysis gas flow , higher activation temperature and longer activation time. The pore structure of carbon material was significantly improved, and the specific surface area was boosted from 15.25 m 2 /g 3 to 627.61 m 2 /g 3 . Mg-Zr-O was evenly distributed on HBC, and a large number of weak and medium basic sites were found in Mg-Zr-O/HBC, which was quite favorable for the aldol condensation. In the aldol condensation of cyclopentanone, Mg-Zr-O/HBC presented the excellent production of the targeted C10+C15 condensates of 84.95 %, which was comparable to that prepared with KOH as activator. After 8 repeated runs, the yield of the targeted condensates remained at 73.33 %. In general, it provided an environmentally friendly strategy for the preparation of HBC and the high-value utilization of pyrolysis gas assisted by pyrolysis gas for the activation of BOC.

Tunable interfaces of Mg-Zr composite oxides boost acid-base synergy for efficient transfer hydrogenation of benzaldehyde

Lingmei Yang,Wei Lv,An Wei,Baining Lin,Guoling Zhang,Bing Han

Mg-Zr composite oxides with tailored Mg-O-Zr interfacial structure weresynthesized. • Synergistic Mg-O-Zr interfacial structure integrates matched acid-basic sites • Isopropanol transfer hydrogenation achieved superior benzyl alcohol yield(89.6%). • Robust stability retained benzyl alcohol yield 82.0% after four reuse cycles. Non-noble metal composite oxide catalysts Mg x Zr 1-x O y featuring an acid–base bifunctional synergistic structure were synthesized via the co-precipitation-calcination method. Under a nitrogen atmosphere, with isopropanol serving as both the hydrogen donor and solvent, selective transfer hydrogenation of benzaldehyde to benzyl alcohol was achieved. The characterization revealed that the optimized Mg 0.7 Zr 0.3 O y catalyst possesses a highly crystalline Mg-Zr mixed-oxide structure with well-matched acidic Zr 4+ sites and surface basic sites of different strengths, including weakly basic hydroxyl species and moderate basic sites associated with interfacial oxygen species. The catalyst exhibits uniform distribution of surface sites and an appropriate pore structure, thereby providing excellent adsorption capacity and mass transfer efficiency. Under optimized conditions, the catalyst delivered nearly full benzaldehyde conversion up to 96.5% and an 89.6% yield of benzyl alcohol, together with a low apparent activation energy of 54.55 kJ·mol⁻¹. Notably, the catalyst retained a BnOH yield of 82.0% after four recycling cycles, indicating remarkable cycling stability. Compared with noble metal catalysts and monometallic oxide catalysts, the developed Mg 0.7 Zr 0.3 O y catalytic system delivers high activity, excellent selectivity, while offering the advantages of low cost and facile synthesis. This provides an efficient and stable non-noble metal catalytic solution for the selective transfer hydrogenation of benzaldehyde to benzyl alcohol and offers mechanistic insights and design principles for acid-base bifunctional composite oxides. Preparation of Mg-Zr alloys through direct electro-deoxidation of MgO-ZrO2 in CaCl2-NaCl molten salt

Na Li,Yaru Peng,Zeng Chen,Wenjuan Xiong,Jiaqi Sun,Yiming Chen,Putao Zhang,Meiyue Liu,Shengjun Li

The electro-deoxidation of MgO does not proceed efficiently due to the electrical insulation properties of MgO and large molar volume of metallic magnesium. In this experiment, an attempt was done to prepare Mg-Zr alloy from their oxides using the method of electro-deoxidation. The electrochemical mechanism of the deoxidation process of MgO, ZrO 2 and MgO-ZrO 2 composite was studied through cyclic voltammetry using metallic cavity electrode (MCE). There was an intermediate phase (Zr 3 O) in the reduction process of ZrO 2 . The electro-deoxidation of MgO occurred for MgO-ZrO 2 composite in CaCl 2 -NaCl molten salt. Moreover, the electro-deoxidation of MgO was promoted by the addition of polyvinyl butyral (PVB). The formation of metal phase Mg was confirmed by XRD, EDS, Raman spectroscopy, and inductively-coupled plasma spectroscopy. The electro-deoxidation products showed significant differences with the concentration of PVB and the ratio between MgO and ZrO 2 . The electro-deoxidation of MgO and ZrO 2 was favorable when the PVB concentration was 5.0% (wt.%). Pure metal phase of Mg-Zr alloys was formed when the molar ratio of MgO and ZrO 2 was 1:2. The atomic fraction of Mg in the electrolytic product was ca. 28.0 mol.%. This work shows that MgO could be directly electro-deoxidized to Mg without the formation of intermediate phase oxide.

Cu–Mg–Zr/SiO2 catalyst for the selective hydrogenation of ethylene carbonate to methanol and ethylene glycol

Jingxia Tian,Wei Chen,Peng Wu,Zhirong Zhu,Xiaohong Li

A Cux–Mgy–Zrz/SiO2 catalyst with a total metal loading of 60 wt% prepared by a deposition–precipitation method was applied for the selective hydrogenation of ethylene carbonate to methanol and ethylene glycol in a fixed-bed reactor. As a result, the Cu8–Mg1–Zr0.47/SiO2 catalyst furnished 99% ethylene carbonate conversion with 85% selectivity to methanol and 99% selectivity to ethylene glycol under the optimized reaction conditions. Moreover, the Cu8–Mg1–Zr0.47/SiO2 catalyst also showed a good lifetime and neither the activity nor the selectivity decreased the during 208 h test. The reaction was found to depend sensitively on the Cu particle size, the surface acidity and the catalyst surface composition. The synergistic effect of balanced Cu0 and Cu+ sites was considered to play a critical role in attaining high yields of methanol and ethylene glycol. Boric oxide also had a positive effect on the hydrogenation of ethylene carbonate, affording higher selectivity to methanol under much milder conditions.

Enhancing the structural and interfacial durability of Ni-rich cathodes under extended operating conditions via Mg/Zr/Nb tri-doping

Adila Abulimiti,Yudong Zhang,Yiyuan Hua,Yanjun Miu,Tong Zhou,Xuejing Zhang,Can Cui,Weiji Dai,Cuijiao Zhao,Saifang Huang

Mg/Zr/Nb tri-doping jointly stabilizes Ni-rich layered cathodes under harsh operating conditions. • Tri-doping reduces Li + /Ni 2+ mixing and stabilizes the transition-metal layer and oxygen framework. • MZN-NCM delivers excellent cycling stability at room temperature, high temperature, and high cutoff voltage. • Mg/Zr/Nb co-doping improves charge transfer and Li + diffusion, enhancing the durability of Ni-rich cathodes. Ni-rich layered cathode materials (LiNi x M 1-x O 2 , x ≥ 0.8) offer high capacity and high energy density, but their cycling stability severely suffers from Li + /Ni 2+ cation mixing, H2-H3 phase-transition strain, interfacial side reactions, and sluggish Li + transport, especially under harsh conditions such as elevated temperature and high cutoff voltage. In this work, a Mg/Zr/Nb tri-doping strategy is proposed to construct Li(Ni 0.9 Co 0.05 Mn 0.05 ) 0.97 Zr 0.01 Mg 0.01 Nb 0.01 O 2 (MZN-NCM) cathode for synergistic stabilization under different operating conditions. The results show that Mg/Zr/Nb co-doping regulates the Ni valence distribution, reduces Li + /Ni 2+ cation mixing, enhances the stability of the transition-metal layer and oxygen framework, and suppresses interfacial side reactions and CEI degradation during cycling. MZN-NCM retains 90.1% of its capacity after 100 cycles at 25 °C and 89.8% at 60 °C, compared with only 59.8% and 41.7% for Pristine-NCM, respectively. Under a high cutoff voltage of 4.5 V, MZN-NCM also maintains a higher capacity retention of 87.7% after 100 cycles. Moreover, kinetic and interfacial chemical analyses indicate that multielement doping improves both charge-transfer behavior and Li + diffusion, enabling a synergistic enhancement of structural stability, interfacial stability, and ion transport. This work demonstrates that Mg/Zr/Nb synergistic doping is an effective material-design strategy for extending the applicable operating conditions of Ni-rich cathodes.

Synthesis of jet fuel from biomass-derived carbonyls via aldol condensation and hydrogenation in the one-pot: Effect of solvent and catalyst

Shanshan Shao,Zian Ye,Xinggang Hu,Jiayuan Sun,Xiaohua Li,Huiyan Zhang

It is a simple, green, and energy-saving way to produce targeted alkanes in the range of jet fuel from biomass-derived carbonyls by aldol condensation and hydrogenation in one pot over the bifunctional catalyst. The catalyst and solvent system played a significant role in this. It was discovered that Ni was preferentially loaded on the region centered on the weak basic sites. The amount of weak and medium basic sites gradually decreased as Ni occupied the region, and the aldol condensation performance was inhibited. The aldol condensation was favored in the aqueous solvent compared with that in the organic solvent. Some condensates presented insoluble in the aqueous solvent, and the hydrogenation performance was weakened, resulting in a poor yield of 48.2% for the targeted alkanes. In order to strike a balance between aldol condensation and hydrogenation in the organic and aqueous solvent, the biphasic solvent system was proposed. The results showed that the total yield of targeted alkanes reached 77.0% with an aqueous and organic solvent ratio of 1:2. The catalytic performance of Ni/Mg-Al-O/AC dropped substantially after 5th reuses, caused by Ni sites coverage due to the formation of boehmite via the hydration of Ni/Mg-Al-O/AC with water. Zr ions replaced Al ions in the bifunctional catalyst, then the yield of the final product achieved 75.6% with Ni/Mg-Zr-O/AC, and it was still maintained at 67.9% after 5th reuses. In this study, the one-pot combination of C-C coupling and hydrogenation was achieved by designing the catalyst and solvent system, promoting biomass-derived jet fuel development more sustainably and simply.
