Surface modification enhances interfacial bonding in PLLA/MgO bone scaffold

Cijun Shuai,Jun Zan,Youwen Yang,Shuping Peng,Wenjing Yang,Fangwei Qi,Lida Shen,Zongjun Tian

The poor interfacial bonding and resultant agglomeration of nanoparticles in polymer-based composite severely deteriorated their reinforcement effect. In this work, MgO nanoparticles (MgO-NPs) were surface modified with Poly (L-lactic acid- co -malic acid) (PLMA) to improve the interfacial compatibility in Poly-l-lactic acid (PLLA) scaffold manufactured by selective laser sintering. PLMA possess a hydrophilic end with carboxyl group (comes from the malic acid) and an l-lactic acid chain. On one hand, the carboxyl group was able to form hydrogen bonding with the hydroxyl groups of MgO-NPs. On the other hand, the l-lactic acid chain containing the hydroxyl groups could react with the carboxyl group of PLLA. Results revealed that the scaffold exhibited significantly enhanced compressive strength and modulus by 47.1% and 237.7%, respectively, which could be ascribed to the enhanced interfacial bonding between PLLA and MgO-NPs, as well as the rigid particle reinforcement. In addition, the scaffold was favorable for cell adhesion, proliferation and differentiation, owing to the improved hydrophilic and suitable pH environment. It was suggested the scaffold was a promising material for bone repair application.

Enhanced antibacterial properties of poly(butylene succinate-co-terephthalate)/Ag@MgO nanocomposite films for food packaging

Yi Ding,Wenwen Yu,Jie Zhang,Wenying Liu,Fengbo Zhu,Yanan Ye,Qiang Zheng

The Ag@MgO nanoparticles (NPs), consisting of silver NPs with a size range of 6–15 nm well-dispersed on the surface of MgO nanoparticles, were synthesized using a simple and efficient in situ synthesis method. These NPs exhibited superior antibacterial activity compared to bare MgO NPs. Subsequently, they were incorporated into poly(butylene succinate- co -terephthalate) (PBST) matrix to prepare antibacterial food packaging films. The effects of Ag@MgO NPs morphology on the compatibility, mechanical, water vapor barrier, UV blocking and antibacterial properties of PBST matrix were evaluated. Unmodified Ag@MgO NPs caused agglomeration and poor mechanical properties. However, when the Ag@MgO NPs were surface modified and interacted with the PBST matrix, the dispersion of nanoparticles and crystallinity improved, resulting in enhanced tensile strength and barrier properties of the composite films. Furthermore, the well-formed of Ag@MgO NPs in the films played a positive role in controlling the growth of microorganisms. Upon incorporation of the modified Ag@MgO NPs, the PBST nanocomposite films exhibited a 23.5% increase in the tensile strength and a 63% decrease in the water vapor permeability compared to PBST films. Moreover, the UV blocking performances were enhanced, and high antibacterial rates of 99.8% and 99.7% were achieved against E. coli and S. aureus , respectively. All the results indicate that the PBST incorporating modified Ag@MgO NPs have excellent potential for use in food packaging applications.

MgO Nanoparticles-Incorporated PCL/Gelatin-Derived Coaxial Electrospinning Nanocellulose Membranes for Periodontal Tissue Regeneration

Peng Wenzao,Ren Shuangshuang,Zhang Yibo,Fan Ruyi,Zhou Yi,Li Lu,Xu Xuanwen,Xu Yan

Electrospinning technique has attracted considerable attention in fabrication of cellulose nanofibrils or nanocellulose membranes, in which polycaprolactone (PCL) could be used as a promising precursor to prepare various cellulose nanofibril membranes for periodontal tissue regeneration. Conventional bio-membranes and cellulose films used in guided tissue regeneration (GTR) can prevent the downgrowth of epithelial cells, fibroblasts, and connective tissue in the area of tooth root but have limitations related to osteogenic and antimicrobial properties. Cellulose nanofibrils can be used as an ideal drug delivery material to encapsulate and carry some drugs. In this study, magnesium oxide (MgO) nanoparticles-incorporated PCL/gelatin core-shell nanocellulose periodontal membranes were fabricated using coaxial electrospinning technique, which was termed as Coaxial-MgO. The membranes using single-nozzle electrospinning technique, namely Blending-MgO and Blending-Blank, were used as control. The morphology and physicochemical property of these nanocellulose membranes were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive spectrum of X-ray (EDS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), contact angle, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The results showed that the incorporation of MgO nanoparticles barely affected the morphology and mechanical property of nanocellulose membranes. Coaxial-MgO with core-shell fiber structure had better hydrophilic property and sustainable release of magnesium ion (Mg2+). CCK-8 cell proliferation and EdU staining demonstrated that Coaxial-MgO membranes showed better human periodontal ligament stem cells (hPDLSCs) proliferation rates compared with the other group due to its gelatin shell with great biocompatibility and hydrophilicity. SEM and immunofluorescence assay results illustrated that the Coaxial-MgO scaffold significantly enhanced hPDLSCs adhesion. In vitro osteogenic and antibacterial properties showed that Coaxial-MgO membrane enhanced alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, formation of mineralized nodules, osteogenic-related genes [ALP, collagen type 1 (COL1), runt-related transcription factor 2 (Runx2)], and high antibacterial properties toward Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans (A. a) when compared with controls. Our findings suggested that MgO nanoparticles-incorporated coaxial electrospinning PCL-derived nanocellulose periodontal membranes might have great prospects for periodontal tissue regeneration.

High Efficiency of Formaldehyde Removal and Anti-bacterial Capability Realized by a Multi-Scale Micro–Nano Channel Structure in Hybrid Hydrogel Coating Cross-Linked on Microfiber-Based Polyurethane

Zheng Fang,Huawei Xu,Qiang Xu,LiuBang Meng,Nan Lu,Renhong Li,Peter Müller-Buschbaum,Qi Zhong

Inspired by the transpiration in the tree stem having a vertical and porous channel structure, high efficiency of formaldehyde removal is realized by the multi-scale micro–nano channel structure in a hybrid P(AAm/DA)-Ag/MgO hydrogel coating cross-linked on microfiber-based polyurethane. The present multi-scale channel structure is formed by a joint effect of directional freezing and redox polymerization as well as nanoparticles-induced porosity. Due to the large number of vertically aligned channels of micrometer size and an embedded porous structure of nanometer size, the specific surface area is significantly increased. Therefore, formaldehyde from solution can be rapidly adsorbed by the amine group in the hydrogels and efficiently degraded by the Ag/MgO nanoparticles. By only immersing in formaldehyde solution (0.2 mg mL–1) for 12 h, 83.8% formaldehyde is removed by the hybrid hydrogels with a multi-scale channel structure, which is 60.8% faster than that observed in hydrogels without any channel structure. After cross-linking the hybrid hydrogels with a multi-scale channel structure to microfiber-based polyurethane and exposing to the formaldehyde vapor atmosphere, 79.2% formaldehyde is removed in 12 h, which is again 11.2% higher than that observed in hydrogels without any channel structure. Unlike the traditional approaches to remove formaldehyde by the light catalyst, no external conditions are required in our present hybrid hydrogel coating, which is very suitable for indoor use. In addition, due to the formation of free radicals by the Ag/MgO nanoparticles, the cross-linked hybrid hydrogel coating on polyurethane synthetic leather also shows good anti-bacterial capability. 99.99% of Staphylococcus aureus can be killed on the surface. Based on the good ability to remove formaldehyde and to kill bacteria, the obtained microfiber-based polyurethane cross-linked with a hybrid hydrogel coating containing a multi-scale channel structure can be used in a broad field of applications, such as furniture and car interior parts, to simultaneously solve the indoor air pollution and hygiene problems.
