This study systematically investigated the hydration process and phase evolution of MgO-MgSO₄-H₂O (M-M-H) systems with and without chemical additive at different hydration stages using X-ray diffraction (XRD), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), hydration heat measurement, and microstructural characterization. The results demonstrate that the formation of magnesium oxysulfate cement (MOSc) product phases is intrinsically governed by Mg²⁺ concentration in the liquid phase, which is co-regulated by both raw material molar ratios and phase regions. At low Mg²⁺ concentrations, the primary hydration products in chemical additive-free MOSc are 3Mg(OH)₂·MgSO₄·8H₂O (3–1–8 phase) and Mg(OH)₂. When Mg²⁺ concentration reaches a critical threshold, 5Mg(OH)₂·MgSO₄·7H₂O (5–1–7 phase) additionally forms in the system. Chemical additive significantly alter the hydration process by enhancing Mg²⁺ concentration and promoting MgO particle participation, ultimately shifting the dominant product phases to 5–1–7 and Mg(OH)₂. These findings provide deeper mechanistic understanding of hydration reactions in M-M-H systems and offer important guidelines for research and applications of chemically modified MOSc.

Li-rich Mn-based materials, as high-energy-density and low-cost cathode materials for Li-ion batteries, suffer severe irreversible voltage fading and capacity loss during cycling, associated with the instability of crystal structure at high voltage, which greatly reduces the specific energy density after cycling and thus impedes their commercialization. Here, we introduce a new strategy to mitigate voltage fading and improve the cycling performance of Li-rich Mn-based cathode materials by simply introducing MgSO4 in the cathode during its preparation process. The results show that cycling stability and voltage fading of corresponding batteries were dramatically improved due to the high Li+ retention at the initial charge process and the stable cathode electrolyte interface (CEI) layer. After 100 cycles at 1C, the average discharge voltage decay is only 0.115 V (1.15 mV per cycle), with a high voltage retention of 96.7%, and the capacity remains at 91.5% after 300 cycles at 1C.

The neuroprotection of acute ischemic stroke (AIS) patients to alleviate the reperfusion injury is a long-standing problem. Although the intra-arterial selective cooling saline infusion (IA-SCSI) is a promising technique to improve the outcome of AIS, the clinical results are not sufficiently satisfactory. Magnesium-containing solutions such as magnesium sulfate (MgSO 4 ) can protect cells by modulating the intracellular Ca 2+ content in damaged cells, suggesting that they could be hypothermia infusion solution. In this study, we hypothesized that MgSO 4 , as a novel hypothermia infusion solution (IA-SCMI), can promote AIS recovery. Methods: First, IA-SCMI was performed in rats subjected to the middle cerebral artery occlusion. The effect of combined hypothermia and MgSO 4 treatment on different neurovascular (NVU) cells after oxygen-glucose deprivation/reoxygenation (OGD/R) injury was examined. Results: Compared with the IA-SCSI or IA-MgSO 4 infusion alone, IA-SCMI offered the best protective effect by improving neurological defects, and alleviating brain integrity damage and CBF reduction. Meanwhile, in vitro results revealed that the combination of hypothermia and MgSO 4 provided maximum protection to the NVU cells, and this protective effect was mainly achieved through the regulation of Ca 2+ homeostasis in different cells. Conclusion: MgSO 4 may be a promising hypothermia infusion solution to facilitate the recovery of neurological function in AIS patients.

We conducted a related study on the determination of Hg 2+ in water by surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). It is based on acriflavine as a signal probe with the assistance of aggregation agent MgSO 4 for the SERS investigation. Moreover, the density functional theory (DFT) calculations of acriflavine were performed for interpreting the assignments of the vibrational normal modes. The interaction of acriflavine with AgNPs was inhibited because the citrate reduced Hg 2+ to Hg and formed Ag amalgam on the AgNPs surface. The formation of Ag-Hg alloys reduced the SERS intensity of acriflavine. This sensing system displayed excellent sensitivity and a detection limit as low as 1.4 mol L − 1 . The relationship between the SERS intensity and Hg 2+ concentration was found in the range of 0.1–8.0 × 10 −7 mol L − 1 . This method for detecting Hg 2+ is inexpensive, facile and sensitive.

The experimental solubility of LiCl–Li 2 SO 4 –MgCl 2 –MgSO 4 –H 2 O and KCl–K 2 SO 4 –MgCl 2 –MgSO 4 –H 2 O systems was measured at 288.15 K. The corresponding stable phase diagrams and water content diagrams were plotted by experimental results. Double salt was formed in both two systems. There are six phase fields, nine univariant solution curves and four invariant points in the phase diagram of LiCl–Li 2 SO 4 –MgCl 2 –MgSO 4 –H 2 O system. And the diagram of another system has seven invariant points and eight crystallization regions. By using multiple linear regression method, parameter Ψ Li,Cl,SO4 and the solubility equilibrium constants of double salt KCl·MgSO 4 ·3H 2 O were obtained by solubility data fitting at 288.15 K. The equilibrium solubility of salts in above systems at the same temperature was predicted with Pitzer's electrolyte solution model and mathematical calculation software. The results indicate that the predicted data are in correspondence with experiments.

Tropospheric aerosols are usually complex mixtures of inorganic and organic components, which show non-ideal behavior in hygroscopicity, mass transfer, and partitioning between gas and aerosols. In this study, we applied a novel approach based on a combination of a pulse RH controlling system and a rapid scan vacuum FTIR spectrometer to investigate the mass transfer limit of magnesium sulfate/glutaric acid (GA) mixture aerosol particles. The liquid water band area of the aerosols is used to reveal the mass transfer limit during the rapid pulse RH downward and upward processes. Partitioning equilibrium between the aerosol particles and water gas phase is observed at the higher RH range (73–50%). When the RH is lower than 40%, there is a hysteresis for the liquid water content changing with the RH, indicating the limited water mass transfer in the aerosols.

This study investigates the effects of magnesium sulfate (MgSO 4 ) addition on the carbonation efficiency and mechanical properties of low-calcium CO 2 -sequestering cementitious material (LCC), which is prepared by calcining a mixture of 78.2% limestone and 21.8% sandstone at 1275 °C for 2 h. LCC samples were prepared with varying concentrations of MgSO 4 solution (0, 0.5, 1, 2, and 3 mol/L) and subjected to CO 2 curing for 24 h. The carbonation behavior, compressive strength, and microstructural characteristics were examined using XRD, TGA, FT-IR, SEM, and LF NMR techniques in combination. Results demonstrate that the addition of MgSO 4 significantly influences the carbonation process and mechanical performance of LCC. Optimum performance was achieved after subjecting the paste prepared with LCC at a concentration of 0.5 mol/L MgSO 4 to a carbonation period lasting 24 h. This resulted in a notable increase in compressive strength by approximately 28% (145 MPa) compared to control samples along with an observed enhancement in CO 2 uptake by around 4%. Microstructural analysis reveals that the inclusion of MgSO 4 promoted the formation of more stable carbonate phases such as Mg-calcite and vaterite while also enhancing silica gel polymerization within the matrix structure of LCC materials. Additionally, it was found excessive concentrations (>1 mol/L) of MgSO 4 led to decreased carbonation efficiency and reduced strength due to gypsum formation as well as limited pore water availability. This study provides valuable insights into optimizing the carbonation process of LCC materials while demonstrating the potential efficacy of MgSO 4 as an effective additive for enhancing the performance of low-carbon CO 2 -sequestering cementitious materials.

MgSO 4 resolved the acid-production/phosphorus-release conflict in alkaline WAS fermentation. • Boosts VFAs to 347 mgCOD/gVS and acetate to 57.2% while controlling PO 4 3 ˉ-P at 12.4 mg/L. • A ternary synergy (Mg 2+ bridging, enzymatic activation, SRBs metabolism) drives acetate production. • This low-cost strategy enables carbon self-sufficiency & simultaneous P recovery in WWTPs. Alkaline fermentation of waste activated sludge (WAS) was a promising technology for producing volatile fatty acids (VFAs) to supplement carbon sources for denitrification and phosphorus removal in wastewater treatment. However, the accompanying intense phosphate release limited its engineering applicability. To resolve the inherent conflict between acid production and phosphorus control, this study established a novel MgSO 4 -enhanced alkaline fermentation strategy. Batch experiments (pH 9.0, 35 °C) systematically revealed its chemical-biological synergistic mechanism. The results indicated that MgSO 4 addition significantly overcame the hydrolysis rate limitation in sludge, enabling peak VFAs production to reach 347 mgCOD/gVS at 18 days. This represented increases of 37.2% and 18.4% compared to the Na 2 SO 4 and FeSO 4 groups, respectively. Moreover, driven by SRB-mediated metabolic diversion, this system achieved directed conversion of metabolites toward acetate (198.4 mgCOD/gVS, accounting for 57.2%). More critically, unlike the high phosphorus release risk associated with traditional alkaline fermentation, this system utilized Mg 2+ -induced in situ struvite crystallization to stably control soluble phosphates in the fermentation broth at lowest 12.4 mg/L. Meanwhile, the concentration of ammonia nitrogen was significantly lower than that in the control group. Mechanistic analysis further confirmed that Mg 2+ promoted deep desorption of EPS at the physicochemical level through cation bridging; at the enzymatic level, it significantly upregulated the catalytic activity of pyruvate kinase and acetate kinase as a cofactor; while at the ecological level, it drove the targeted succession of microbial communities toward functional bacterial genera such as Thiopseudomonas (17.23%), establishing an efficient coupled network of sulfate reduction to acid production and effectively suppressing methanogenesis. This study demonstrated the dual advantages of the MgSO 4 strategy in achieving high-quality carbon source self-sufficiency and in situ phosphorus resource recovery, providing a viable technical paradigm for low-carbon operation in wastewater treatment plants. A ZnSO4 electrolyte solution with impurity salts such as MnSO4 and MgSO4 is often used in zinc hydrometallurgical processes over a wide temperature range. CaSO4·2H2O(s) scaling and fluorine corrosion are two encountered problems in the process. Understanding the CaF2(s) solubility behavior in MSO4 (M = Zn, Mn, Mg) aqueous solutions at various temperatures helps remove Ca2+ and F– ions from the solution. However, CaF2(s) solubility data, especially at temperatures >298 K, have not been published yet. In this work, CaF2(s) solubilities in the CaF2–CaSO4–MSO4–H2O (M = Zn, Mn, Mg) quaternary systems and its subsystems of the CaF2–MSO4–H2O (M = Zn, Mn, Mg) at 348.15 K and the CaF2–CaSO4–MSO4–H2O (M = Zn, Mg) quaternary systems and the CaF2–MgSO4–H2O ternary system at 298.15 K are systematically measured. The results show that the CaF2(s) solubility in the MSO4 (M = Zn, Mn, Mg) aqueous solution of a certain concentration at 348.15 K is considerably higher than that at 298.15 K. At 298.15 and 348.15 K, the salting-in effect of MSO4 (M = Zn, Mn, Mg) on CaF2(s) solubility is enhanced with the order ZnSO4 < MnSO4 < MgSO4. At both temperatures, CaF2(s) solubilities in CaSO4·2H2O(s)- or CaSO4(s)-saturated MSO4 (M = Zn, Mn, Mg) aqueous solutions are generally lower than those in pure MSO4 (M = Zn, Mn, Mg) aqueous solutions. Particularly, the salting-in effect of MgSO4 on CaF2 is so strong that CaF2(s) dissolves completely and is converted to CaSO4·2H2O(s) and MgF2(s) in a concentrated MgSO4 aqueous solution. Hence, this study indicates that high temperatures and high salt concentrations increase the CaF2(s) solubility, making the removal of Ca2+ and F– ions from the system challenging. Further, the existence of impurity salts MnSO4 and MgSO4 makes it more difficult.

Silicon oxide (SiO x ), consisting of nanosized Si crystallites and oxide matrix (SiO y , y near 2), is regarded as one of the most promising anode materials for next-generation high energy density lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Commonly, modulating oxygen content and surface chemistry are favorable to the lithium ions storage performances of SiO x anode. Here, an AlCl 3 –MgSO 4 assisted low-temperature (250 °C) etching technique is adopted to modify the commercial micron-sized SiO x anode, this novel modification method tunes the O/Si ratio on the surface of SiO x . Impressively, the modified SiO x anode exhibits a high reversible capacity of 480 mAh g −1 at 1A g −1 after 200 cycles and good rate capability of above 110 mAh g −1 at 10 A g −1 . This work provides a simple and feasible modification strategy to the development of high performance SiO x anode.

Thermochemical energy storage technology stands as a promising avenue to address the intermittent and fluctuating nature of solar energy. However, it poses significant challenges due to the inadequate adsorption performance of adsorbents and limited heat and mass transfer capacity. In this research, a composite adsorption heat storage material, denoted as AF-CNT-Mg, was successfully synthesized, demonstrating high water adsorption and excellent heat transfer capacity. This material was developed using aluminum fumarate (AF) and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNT) as a composite matrix, with magnesium sulfate acting as impregnated hygroscopic salt. The influence of CNT content and magnesium sulfate mass fraction on thermal conductivity and water adsorption properties was thoroughly investigated. Results indicate that increasing CNT concentration enhances heat storage performance while diminishing water adsorption performance. Consequently, an AF-CNT matrix with a CNT mass fraction of 0.2 wt% was chosen as the composite matrix. The texture and thermal properties of AF-CNT-Mg composites were analyzed through automated specific surface area and pore size analysis, scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetry, and differential scanning calorimetry. Furthermore, the effects of varying concentrations of impregnated metal ions on water adsorption properties were explored. Interestingly, a significant enhancement in the water adsorption performance and heat storage capacity was observed. The energy storage density could reach 838.4 kJ·kg −1 , with a maximum water adsorption amount of 0.53 kgH 2 O·kg −1 . Overall, these findings demonstrate that incorporating CNT expansion and hygroscopic salt magnesium sulfate into the al-based metal–organic framework substantially improves the heat storage performance of the composite adsorption heat storage material. Such advancements hold promising implications for applications in solar thermal power generation systems.

The fragility of the global rare earth supply chain and the urgent demand for sustainable exploitation have driven intensive research into green and high-efficiency extraction technologies. Bioleaching technology, distinguished by its environmental compatibility and resource adaptability, has emerged as a transformative alternative to conventional chemical leaching methods. This study focuses on the multiphase utilization of ion-adsorption rare earth ores by leveraging Penicillium sp. fermentation broth to promote MgSO 4 -mediated leaching through a biologically enhanced chemical process. The objectives were to elucidate the rare earth leaching mechanisms under bio-promoted chemical processes and to optimize strain cultivation and leaching parameters. Untargeted metabolomics was applied to delineate dynamic changes in differential metabolites before and after leaching, while Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were utilized to clarify metabolite-mineral interfacial interactions. The results demonstrated that the composite system achieved a rare earth recovery rate of 93.79 % under optimal conditions (liquid-to-solid ratio of 4:1, 6-hour leaching), significantly outperforming conventional chemical leaching. Metabolomic analysis revealed a multifunctional interaction network involving organic acid-mediated proton attack, lipid molecule-driven interfacial modification, and benzenoid compound-regulated redox balance. This study demonstrates that the fermentation broth of Penicillium sp. significantly enhances MgSO 4 -mediated leaching efficiency of ion-adsorption rare earth ores, thereby offering a sustainable pathway to address resource and environmental challenges in rare earth industries.
