Recently, ZnCdS has become an attractive visible-light-driven photocatalyst due to its tunable band gap and suitable band edge position. However, fast recombination of photo-generated carriers in ZnCdS still restricting its industrial application. In this paper, a novel and high-efficiency MgTi 2 O 5 /ZnCdS composite was constructed by in situ growth of ZnCdS nanoparticles on MgTi 2 O 5 . The photocatalytic activity of the Mg 2 TiO 5 /ZnCdS composite was evaluated using methyl orange (MO), tetracycline (TC), and methylene blue (MB). The results show that the as-prepared hybrid exhibited highly efficient photocatalytic activity under visible light irradiation, and the degradation efficiencies in 1 h reach about 93 %, 96.2 % and 94.5 % for MO, TC and MB, respectively, while the pure ZnCdS show only 60 % degradation efficiency under the same conditions, respectively. The improved photocatalytic activity could be attributed to the high efficient charge separation and fast charge transport in the MgTi 2 O 5 /ZnCdS composite, which are mainly due to the built-in electron field formed at the joint of the Mg 2 TiO 5 /ZnCdS heterojunction.

Photocatalysis is a green technology which could sustainably convert CO 2 into value-added chemicals by using solar energy. Under xenon light irradiation, Mn 2 O 3 /MgTi 2 O 5 nanocomposites synthesized by two-step hydrothermal method greatly increase photocatalytic activity of CO 2 reduction. The optimal yield 420.53 μmol g −1 h −1 for CH 4 is achieved at a ratio 1:10 (W/W) of Mn 2 O 3 to MgTi 2 O 5 , with selectivity of 98.1 %, i.e., 4 and 33 times larger than those of individual MgTi 2 O 5 and Mn 2 O 3 , respectively. The superior photocatalytic performance is attributed to the formation of S-type heterojunction, valence change of Mn 3+ /Mn 4+ , and the bridging effect of Mg migration, which facilitates the separation and transfer of photogenerated electrons and holes. Mn 2 O 3 /MgTi 2 O 5 constructs an efficient redox photocatalytic system composed of a light trapping component (Mn 2 O 3 ), electron transport channel (Mg penetrating Mn 2 O 3 ), mutually separated reduction center (MgTi 2 O 5 ) and oxidation center (Mn 2 O 3 ). The potential Mn 2 O 3 /MgTi 2 O 5 photocatalyst for CO 2 reduction provides new insights to design novel efficient photocatalyst composites akin to biological photosynthesis.

The rapid development of minimized near-infrared (NIR) phosphor-converted LEDs (pc-LEDs) has evoked a large demand for broadband NIR phosphors and will enable breakthrough NIR spectroscopy applications. Consequently, the search for NIR pc-LEDs which can emit in the NIR-II window (1000–1700 nm) has become increasingly urgent. Herein, an unprecedented long-wavelength NIR MgTi2O5:Ni2+ phosphor that exhibits broadband NIR emission covering 1200 to 1700 nm with a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 245 nm is successfully synthesized. By combining the MgTi2O5:Ni2+ phosphor with an ultraviolet LED chip, a high-performance NIR pc-LED is fabricated, which has a NIR output power of 3.6 mW at 300 mA driving current. These results indicate that the fabricated NIR-II pc-LED device is a promising candidate as a broadband light source for NIR spectroscopy applications including night vision, high-penetrating imaging, and information restoration. For instance, the secret information covered by ink can be recovered with the aid of an NIR-II pc-LED. This work not only provides a new material that has great potential as a NIR light source, but also demonstrates a set of approaches to expand the application of NIR spectroscopy and imaging technology.

Rechargeable magnesium batteries (RMBs) have attracted increasing attention as promising next-generation energy storage systems owing to their high safety and the natural abundance of magnesium resources. However, their large-scale commercialization remains hindered by critical challenges, including the limited selection of suitable electrode materials and the insufficient performance of electrolytes. In this study, motivated by the excellent structural rigidity and minimal volume variation of titanium-based materials during charge–discharge processes, a pseudo-brookite MgTi2O5 compound was synthesized via a sol–gel method as a novel cathode material for RMBs. The optimal synthesis parameters were systematically identified by tuning the Mg/Ti molar ratio of the precursors, as well as the temperature and time of heat treatment. Furthermore, a thin carbon coating with a thickness of approximately 1 nm was introduced onto the surface of MgTi2O5 via a carbon-coating strategy to enhance its electrochemical performance. At a current density of 50 mA g−1, MgTi2O5 exhibits an initial discharge capacity of 68.94 mAh g−1, while maintaining a high capacity retention of 79.14% after 1000 cycles at a high current density of 500 mA g−1. This study reveals that the charge compensation during the charge–discharge process of MgTi2O5 is mainly contributed by the Ti3+/Ti4+ redox pair. Our findings validate the feasibility of using MgTi2O5 as a cathode material in RMBs, providing valuable insights for the development of novel titanium-based electrode materials for magnesium batteries.
