High performance pixelated quantum dots array on Micro-LED by inkjet printing

Qiwei Li,Yu Lu,Yang Li,Kui Pan,Liying Deng,Chang Lin,Kaixin Zhang,Jie Sun,Qun Yan,Tailiang Guo

Micro-LED display has risen to prominence in research and industry, distinguished by their numerous advantages. Quantum dots (QDs) film, serving as color conversion layers (CCLs) for Micro-LED, are considered a leading candidate for the next generation of displays, owing to their low power consumption and broad color gamut. Inkjet printing stands out as a feasible approach for crafting QDs CCLs. The essence of the process hinges on attaining a printed QDs film that boasts both uniformity and high-precision QDs array. However, the unstable printing of QDs ink significantly impacts the surface morphology of QDs arrays and the display performance of Micro-LEDs. Therefore, elucidating the mechanism behind the unstable printing of QDs in inkjet printing and fabricating QDs is of paramount importance. In this study, through the simulation of unstable printing with conventional QDs ink, we identified nozzle blockage and the rapid evaporation of low-boiling-point ink as the primary causes of unstable printing. This leads to aggregation and deposition of QDs, obstructing the nozzle and altering the fluid path. A novel binary organic composite ink was employed to print the QDs array on the substrate with ultra-stability, achieving a high yield and greatly reduced coffee-ring effect Micro-LED full-color display.

Highly luminescent CsPbX3/PMMA (X=Br, I) composites with improved stability for full-color Micro-LED displays

Junhu Cai,Xiang Zhang,Yu Chen,Wenzong Lai,Wenyan Zhang,Zexi Lin,Yun Ye,Sheng Xu,Tailiang Guo,Jiajun Luo,Enguo Chen

Inorganic metal halide perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) have recently emerged as promising candidates for color conversion materials in Micro-LED displays, due to their outstanding color purity, high absorption coefficient, tunable emission wavelength . However the inferior stability and undesirable photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) restrict their particle applications. Herein, CsPbX 3 /PMMA (X = Br, I) composites with improved stability and optical performance were successfully prepared by a general and mild in-situ polymerization strategy. The ester carbonyl (C O) group in MMA formed complexes with Pb 2+ , leading to the in-situ thermal polymerization of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) under the action of the initiator. The multifunctional PMMA can efficiently passivate halogen vacancies while acting as a barrier against the degradation caused by heat, water, and oxygen. As a result, the PLQYs and stability of PMMA-coated CsPbX 3 PQDs have been significantly improved. When implementing CsPbX 3 /PMMA/PDMS composites as color conversion layers in Micro-LEDs, they achieve an impressive color gamut of 127.23% with excellent stability. We believe our work will stimulate the exploration of perovskite/polymer composites for industrial Micro-LED applications.

Flexible quantum dots color conversion layer fabricated via laser direct writing technique for Micro-LED

Ruoxi Huang,Deyi Yao,Kaichen Sun,Qihang Liu,Zhonghua Xu,Rongqiu Lv,Teng Ma,Jun Chen

With the continuous increase in research and market demand for display, Micro-light-emitting diode (Micro-LED) has become one of the current research hotspots in the display industry due to its outstanding performance in color, resolution, life, and energy consumption. In this study, all-inorganic perovskite quantum dots (QDs) were synthesized using a hot injection method and uniformly coated on the surface of a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrate. Subsequently, laser processing technology was used to pattern the QDs film, achieving precise pattern design. Even after bending the film 100 times, the peak intensity of photoluminescence could still reach over 50 % compared with that of unbending. We used these specially treated flexible QDs films as the color conversion layers to realize color conversion display of Micro-LED. This research provides a research direction for the development of new display technology.

Ye He,Jiapeng Yang,Shouying Mu,Yunshu Luo,Enrou Mei,Junze Tong,Wenan Guo,Chao Zou,Yue Lin,Pengfei Tian,Xiaojuan Liang,Shuli Wang,Weidong Xiang

Quantum-dot (QD) color-conversion technology is considered a promising strategy for constructing a full-color micro-LED display. Perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) are the preferred luminescent materials for constructing color-conversion micro-LED pixels, but their poor environmental stability severely limits their practical application in micro-LED displays. Here, we design a novel submicron-sized PQD glass microspheres (PQDGMS) with high quantum yield and excellent stability for color conversion micro-LED displays. Kilogram scale (batch 2 kg) submicron-sized PQDGMS was prepared by a top-down strategy including melt-quenching, secondary recrystallization, and optimized submicronization processes. Ultra-stability of the PQDGMS was attributed to the passivation and self-healing effects of PQDs by AgBr additive, and the protection effect of the glass matrix around PQDs. The prepared PQDGMS has excellent environmental stability, with PL intensity maintained over 95% after immersion in water for 10 000 h, over 82% at a temperature of 100°C, and over 86% under continuous blue light irradiation (800 W m −2 ) for 240 h. We prepared the PQDGMS color conversion pixels in a patterned through-hole glass substrate via capillary filling assistance and constructed color conversion green and red micro-LED chips with external quantum efficiency of 24.8% and 16.7%, respectively.

Green Photolithography of Perovskite Nanocrystals: In Situ Silica Encapsulation for Stable Micro-LED Displays

Yue Lin,Yifei Liu,Xuemin Kong,Jiayuan Li,Yu Chen,Siting Cai,Yuchen Zhou,Tianqi Zhang,Ningjun Zhou,Wenan Guo,Zhenning Sun,Guolong Chen,Tingzhu Wu,Zhong Chen,Shuli Wang

Photolithographic patterning of perovskite nanocrystals (PeNCs) is pivotal for realizing color-conversion schemes in full-color Micro-LED displays; however, this process is currently hindered by severe material degradation and a pervasive reliance on toxic organic solvents. Herein, we propose a robust PeNC photoresist strategy designed for compatibility with eco-friendly green solvents, specifically enabling the use of benign ethanol as a developer for high-resolution patterning. By synthesizing PeNCs directly within isobornyl acrylate (IBOA) monomers and engineering an in situ SiO 2 encapsulation layer via hydrolysis, we achieve superior material stability. Remarkably, the resulting PeNC@SiO 2 /IBOA composites retain bright fluorescence after 3480 h of ethanol immersion, whereas uncoated controls quench completely within 96 h. Leveraging this stability, we successfully patterned color conversion pixels with dimensions of 20 µm × 10 µm via photolithography with green solvent ethanol as the developer, which retain 80.3% of their initial photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) post-lithography. The successful fabrication of highly uniform red, green, and blue (RGB) pixel arrays demonstrates the significant potential of this green, high-performance lithography strategy of PeNCs for next-generation Micro-LED displays.

Electrohydrodynamic Inkjet Printing of Three-Dimensional Perovskite Nanocrystal Arrays for Full-Color Micro-LED Displays

Yihang Chen,Xiao Yang,Xiaotong Fan,Ao Kang,Xuemin Kong,Guolong Chen,Chenming Zhong,Yijun Lu,Yi Fan,Xu Hou,Tingzhu Wu,Zhong Chen,Shuli Wang,Yue Lin

Perovskite nanocrystal (PeNC) arrays are showing a promising future in the next generation of micro-light-emitting-diode (micro-LED) displays due to the narrow emission linewidth and adjustable peak wavelength. Electrohydrodynamic (EHD) inkjet printing, with merits of high resolution, uniformity, versatility, and cost-effectiveness, is among the competent candidates for constructing PeNC arrays. However, the fabrication of red light-emitting CsPbBrxI(3–x) nanocrystal arrays for micro-LED displays still faces challenges, such as low brightness and poor stability. This work proposes a design for a red PeNC colloidal ink that is specialized for the EHD inkjet printing of three-dimensional PeNC arrays with enhanced luminescence and stability as well as being adaptable to both rigid and flexible substrates. Made of a mixture of PeNCs, polymer polystyrene (PS), and a nonpolar xylene solvent, the PeNC colloidal ink enables precise control of array sizes and shapes, which facilitates on-demand micropillar construction. Additionally, the inclusion of PS significantly increases the brightness and environmental stability. By adopting this ink, the EHD printer successfully fabricated full-color 3D PeNC arrays with a spatial resolution over 2500 ppi. It shows the potential of the EHD inkjet printing strategy for high-resolution and robust PeNC color conversion layers for micro-LED displays.

Manufacturing Carbon-Doped Stamp With Surface Microstructures for Rapid and Reliable Micro-LED Transfer Process

Zongtao Li,Zelong Li,Jiasheng Li,Guanwei Liang,Jiahao Meng,Xinrui Ding

The laser-assisted micro-transfer printing (Laser-assisted $\mu $ TP) technology is considered a highly promising solution for the mass transfer of micro-LEDs, which offers a series of benefits, including high transfer accuracy, fast transfer speed, and selective transfer capability, but it also presents a risk of micro-LED damage due to laser exposure. To solve this issue, this article proposes an improvement to the Laser-assisted $\mu $ TP by introducing a novel carbon particle-doped polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) stamp (CPD stamp). The carbon particles doped in the stamp enhance the laser absorption capability of the stamp, thereby reducing chip damage. At the same time, the pristine adhesion strength of CPD stamp declines by 98.35% attributed to the design of surface microstructure, accelerating chip ejection and improving the transfer speed. After optimization, the optimal CPD stamp demonstrates the potential for high-speed transfer, as it is demonstrated that the detachment of the chips from the optimal CPD stamp occurs within 117 ms. Meanwhile, the micro-LEDs are successfully transferred by optimal CPD stamp without degradation. In conclusion, the CPD stamp proposed in this article provides an effective solution to the drawbacks of Laser-assisted $\mu $ TP, potentially advancing the commercialization process of this technology

Encapsulation-Enabled Perovskite–PMMA Films Combining a Micro-LED for High-Speed White-Light Communication

Zhaoming Wang,Zixian Wei,Yuting Cai,Lei Wang,Mutong Li,Ping Liu,Rongjun Xie,Lai Wang,Guodan Wei,H. Y. Fu

Cesium lead halide perovskite nanocrystals have recently become emerging materials for color conversion in visible light communication (VLC) and solid-state lighting (SSL), due to their fast response and desirable optical properties. Herein, perovskite nanocrystal-polymethyl methacrylate (PNC-PMMA) films with red and yellow emission are prepared. The PNC-PMMA films, with optical properties such as a short lifetime and air stability, are used to make broadband color converters based on a high-bandwidth 75 μm blue micro-LED (μLED) for VLC. The yellow-emitting CsPb(Br/I)3 PNC-PMMA has a high bandwidth of 347 MHz, while the red-emitting CsPbI3 PNC-PMMA exhibits a higher modulation bandwidth of 822 MHz, which is ∼65 times larger than that of conventional phosphors. After fixing the two PNC-PMMA films in front of the μLED, a qualified warm white light is generated with a correlated color temperature of 5670 K, a color rendering index of 75.7, and a de L’Eclairage (CIE) coordinate at (0.33, 0.35). Although the color conversion of the blue light sacrifices some received power and slightly reduces the overall bandwidth from 1.130 to 1.005 GHz, a maximum real-time data rate of 1.7 Gbps is still achievable using the non-return-to-zero on–off keying modulation scheme, which is ∼6 times higher than that of the previous record. This study provides a practical approach to develop a considerably high-bandwidth white-light system for both high-speed VLC and high-quality SSL.

Solvent-Mediated Synthesis of Small-Sized Perovskite Quantum Dots for a Color-Enhanced Micro-LED Display

Jianhua Huang,Liuli Yang,Junhui Feng,Zheyuan Xu,Longwang Kan,Hao Song,Lixiang Huang,Ming Huang,Ziwei Li,Anlian Pan

Perovskite quantum dots (PeQDs) have garnered significant attention as new-generation color-conversion materials for potential applications in microlight-emitting-diode (micro-LED)-based display devices. However, they still face challenges in achieving uniform size synthesis and ultrahigh color conversion efficiency. Here, all-inorganic PeQDs with uniform size and excellent stability were achieved through an optimized solvent-mediated synthesis using dodecyl acrylate (DA). This solvent not only enhances the solubility of the precursor, facilitating the rapid formation of intermediate monomers, but also induces abundant carbon–oxygen bonds for interface passivation, thereby enabling the controllable and slow nucleation of small-sized PeQDs. The highest photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 94.9% and 91.1% has been recorded for green and red PeQD solutions, respectively. The mechanisms behind the size-dependent improvement in luminescence performance have been elucidated and validated through transient absorption measurements and an emission–reabsorption model derived from simulations. Furthermore, our designed mixed-color film composed of green and red PeQDs exhibited ultrahigh overall stability, maintaining 76.7% of its initial intensity after being aged at 85 °C and 40 W m–2 for 600 h. These promising mixed-color films were successfully utilized to enhance micro-LED displays, achieving a high luminous efficacy of 150 lm W–1 and a color gamut of 130.2% of NTSC and 93.4% of BT.2020.

High-Bandwidth White-Light System Combining a Micro-LED with Perovskite Quantum Dots for Visible Light Communication

Shiliang Mei,Xiaoyan Liu,Wanlu Zhang,Ran Liu,Lirong Zheng,Ruiqian Guo,Pengfei Tian

This work proposes a high-bandwidth white-light system consisting of a blue gallium nitride (GaN) micro-LED (μLED) exciting yellow-emitting CsPbBr1.8I1.2 perovskite quantum dots (YQDs) for high-speed real-time visible light communication (VLC). The packaged 80 μm × 80 μm blue-emitting μLED has a modulation bandwidth of ∼160 MHz and a peak emission wavelength of ∼445 nm. The achievable bandwidth of the white-light system is up to 85 MHz in the absence of filters and equalization technology. Meanwhile, the bandwidth of the YQDs as a color converter is as high as 73 MHz with the blue GaN μLED as the pump source. A maximum data rate of 300 Mbps can be achieved by taking advantage of the high bandwidth of the white-light system using the non-return-to-zero on–off keying (NRZ-OOK) modulation scheme. The resultant bit-error rate is 2.0 × 10–3, well beneath the forward error correction criterion of 3.8 × 10–3 required for error-free data transmission. In addition, the YQDs which we proposed as a color converter possess high stability for VLC. After half a year, the achievable bandwidths of the white-light system and the YQDs are still up to 83 and 70 MHz, respectively. This study provides the direction of developing high-bandwidth white-light system for both high-efficiency solid-state lighting and high-speed VLC.

Hierarchical Gradient Black Matrix Cavities: Enabling Superior Inkjet-Printed Quantum-Dot Color Conversion Pixels for Micro-LED Displays

Huilong Yang,Junhu Cai,Yu Chen,Zheng Zhou,Yun Ye,Sheng Xu,Tailiang Guo,Enguo Chen

Quantum-dot color conversion (QDCC) enables high-fidelity, wide-gamut Micro-LED displays, yet the black matrix (BM) confinement severely affects inkjet-printed QD pixel performance. The morphology, surface interactions, and optical properties of the BM directly dictate the droplet positioning, drying dynamics, and final luminescence performance of the QD films, respectively. These factors collectively lead to nonuniform QD distribution, whereas the optical properties of the BM mainly determine the luminescence performance of QD films. Here, we propose a hierarchical gradient black-matrix architecture (HG-BMA) with graded sidewalls to topographically confine inkjet-printed QDCC pixels, restraining capillary flow and contact-line pinning and greatly improving QD coverage uniformity and color conversion stability. Dodecyltrimethoxysilane (DTMS) hydrophobizes the substrate and sidewalls, raising glass contact angles from 17.7° to 84.4° and photoresist angles from 47.6° to 92.5°. With six print passes into the HG-BMA, we successfully fabricated the Micro-LED pixels with a 4.5 µm-thick QDCC layer, featuring an ultralow blue-light transmittance of only 0.198%, a light conversion efficiency of 19.5% (representing a 32.3% improvement over conventional architectures), and a color purity exceeding 91% for color conversion of Micro-LEDs. This HG-BMA offers a scalable high-precision inkjet printing route toward wide-gamut next-gen Micro-LED displays.

3D-printed mesoporous-silica-confined perovskite quantum dot micro-optics for geometry-tailored color conversion in micro-LED displays

Chuyu Qin,Mengyang Wang,Aixin Luo,Guangda Du,Jiaxian Liu,Zekai Hong,Tingshi Yang,Pu Zhang,Chunlin Ma,Luyu Cao,Yayun Zhou,Bingfeng Fan

The realization of high-performance color conversion micrometer-scale light-emitting diodes (micro-LEDs) is fundamentally limited by the planar thin-film geometry of current color-conversion layers (CCLs), leading to low light extraction efficiency, severe optical crosstalk, and restricted emission control. Here, we report a scalable strategy to engineer high-performance three-dimensional (3D) CCLs via digital light processing (DLP) printing of mesoporous-silica-confined perovskite quantum dots (PQDs). The CsPbBr3 PQDs, uniformly grown inside mesopores, are embedded in photocurable resins, achieving an internal quantum efficiency of 72.4%, external quantum efficiency of 64.6%, and exceptional environmental stability over 40 days without degradation. Optical simulations reveal that 3D architectures such as hemispheres, cylinders and cones offer geometry-tailored emission profiles unachievable by planar films, enabling tunable trade-offs between pixel-plane irradiance and far-field angular distribution. The proof-of-concept DLP-printed micro-hemispherical arrays exhibit uniform geometry and homogeneous QD distribution, making them suitable for integration with micro-LED chips (<50 µm). This approach transforms micro-LED color conversion from uncontrolled thin films to deterministic 3D structures, paving the way for high-efficiency, low-crosstalk pixels in AR/VR, wearable, and projection displays.
