Catalytic conversion of concentrated miscanthus in water for ethylene glycol production

Jifeng Pang,Mingyuan Zheng,Aiqin Wang,Ruiyan Sun,Hua Wang,Yu Jiang,Tao Zhang

Miscanthus, a promising energy crop, was used for ethylene glycol (EG) production through one-pot catalytic conversion. With a binary catalyst composed of commercial tungstic acid and Raney Ni, the miscanthus with 1 % concentration was transformed into EG with a yield of 35.5%. However, the yield dropped to 13.6% as the miscanthus concentration was increased to 10 %. The underlying reason for the yield decrease was disclosed through analysis of the liquid products, investigation of pretreatments, and characterization of the catalysts. It was found that the protectors on the surface of miscanthus and the lignin component underwent decomposition under reaction conditions, resulting in the formation of some organic acids and unsaturated compounds that preferentially poisoned the Raney Ni catalyst and consequently decreased the EG yield. When the inhibitors were effectively removed by base solvent pretreatment, the EG yield was successfully improved to 39.0% even under 10% concentration of feedstock. © 2014 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J , 60: 2254–2262, 2014

Near-complete enzymatic hydrolysis efficiency of Miscanthus using hydrotropic fractionation at atmospheric pressure

Xuelian Zhou,Jue Liu,Tianjiao Huang,Huiyang Bian,Ruibin Wang,Jiulong Sha,Hongqi Dai

Enhanced enzymatic saccharification of Miscanthus (MC) biomass, based on a novel benzenesulfonic acid (BA)-induced fractionation at mild condition as the pretreatment, gives a good example for the efficient transformation of energy crops into value-added products with minimal environmental impact. The results indicated that BA could facilitate the rapid and high solubilization of both lignin and hemicellulose, approximately 90.8 % of lignin and 75.5 % of hemicellulose were removed at 80 °C within 20 min. Consequently, the subsequent enzymatic hydrolysis efficiency was greatly enhanced to obtain an improved enzymatic digestibility with a high glucose yield of 97.9 %. Our study opens up an innovative avenue for the efficient valorization of the recalcitrant energy crops as MC.

Steam-exploded biomass saccharification is predominately affected by lignocellulose porosity and largely enhanced by Tween-80 in Miscanthus

Dan Sun,Aftab Alam,Yuanyuan Tu,Shiguang Zhou,Yanting Wang,Tao Xia,Jiangfeng Huang,Ying Li,Zahoor,Xiaoyang Wei,Bo Hao,Liangcai Peng

In this study, total ten Miscanthus accessions exhibited diverse cell wall compositions, leading to largely varied hexoses yields at 17%–40% (% cellulose) released from direct enzymatic hydrolysis of steam-exploded (SE) residues. Further supplied with 2% Tween-80 into the enzymatic digestion, the Mis7 accession showed the higher hexose yield by 14.8-fold than that of raw material, whereas the Mis10 had the highest hexoses yield at 77% among ten Miscanthus accessions. Significantly, this study identified four wall polymer features that negatively affect biomass saccharification as p   <   0.05 or 0.01 in the SE residues, including cellulose DP, Xyl and Ara of hemicellulose, and S-monomer of lignin. Based on Simons’ stain, the SE porosity (defined by DY/DB) was examined to be the unique positive factor on biomass enzymatic digestion. Hence, this study provides the potential strategy to enhance biomass saccharification using optimal biomass process technology and related genetic breeding in Miscanthus and beyond.

Cellulose nanofibrils from Miscanthus floridulus straw as green particle emulsifier for O/W Pickering emulsion

Qi Li,Bing Xie,Yixiang Wang,Yanting Wang,Liangcai Peng,Yan Li,Bin Li,Shilin Liu

For high value utilization of energy crops, in this work, a high stable O/W Pickering emulsion had been prepared successfully by using cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) obtained from Miscanthus floridulus straw (MFS). The effect of high pressure homogenization time on the physicochemical properties of the resulted CNFs had been investigated. The obtained CNFs had high surface activity and could spontaneously diffuse to the interface of the O/W phase. The particle adsorption kinetics of CNFs was characteristic of soft particles or Pickering emulsifiers, and the adsorption was irreversible. Therefore, stable oil-in-water Pickering emulsion was obtained by using the CNFs as particle emulsifiers, and the emulsion stabilized by CNFs with only 0.15 wt% exhibited outstanding stability. Moreover, the environmental factors, such as pH values, ionic strength, and temperature had little influence on the stability of the emulsion. All the results indicated that CNFs exhibited promising interfacial activity and powerful emulsifying ability. Owing to the flexible shape of the CNFs, it was concluded that MFS as a kind of energy crop was a promising source to obtain the CNFs for the fabrication of novel food-grade Pickering emulsions.

Distinct Geographical Distribution of the Miscanthus Accessions with Varied Biomass Enzymatic Saccharification

Xukai Li,Haofeng Liao,Chunfen Fan,Huizhen Hu,Ying Li,Jing Li,Zili Yi,Xiwen Cai,Liangcai Peng,Yuanyuan Tu

Miscanthus is a leading bioenergy candidate for biofuels, and it thus becomes essential to characterize the desire natural Miscanthus germplasm accessions with high biomass saccharification. In this study, total 171 natural Miscanthus accessions were geographically mapped using public database. According to the equation [P(H/L| East) = P(H/L∩East)/P(East)], the probability (P) parameters were calculated on relationships between geographical distributions of Miscanthus accessions in the East of China, and related factors with high(H) or low(L) values including biomass saccahrification under 1% NaOH and 1% H 2 SO 4 pretreatments, lignocellulose features and climate conditions. Based on the maximum P value, a golden cutting line was generated from 42°25’ N, 108°22’ E to 22°58’ N, 116°28’ E on the original locations of Miscanthus accessions with high P(H|East) values (0.800–0.813), indicating that more than 90% Miscanthus accessions were originally located in the East with high biomass saccharification. Furthermore, the averaged insolation showed high P (H|East) and P(East|H) values at 0.782 and 0.754, whereas other climate factors had low P(East|H) values, suggesting that the averaged insolation is unique factor on Miscanthus distributions for biomass saccharification. In terms of cell wall compositions and wall polymer features, both hemicelluloses level and cellulose crystallinity (CrI) of Miscanthus accessions exhibited relative high P values, suggesting that they should be the major factors accounting for geographic distributions of Miscanthus accessions with high biomass digestibility.

Arabinose substitution degree in xylan positively affects lignocellulose enzymatic digestibility after various NaOH/H2SO4 pretreatments in Miscanthus

Fengcheng Li,Shuangfeng Ren,Wei Zhang,Zhengdan Xu,Guosheng Xie,Yan Chen,Yuanyuan Tu,Qing Li,Shiguang Zhou,Yu Li,Fen Tu,Lin Liu,Yanting Wang,Jianxiong Jiang,Jingping Qin,Shizhong Li,Qiwei Li,Hai-Chun Jing,Fasong Zhou,Neal Gutterson,Liangcai Peng

Xylans are the major hemicelluloses in grasses, but their effects on biomass saccharification remain unclear. In this study, we examined the 79 representative Miscanthus accessions that displayed a diverse cell wall composition and varied biomass digestibility . Correlation analysis showed that hemicelluloses level has a strong positive effect on lignocellulose enzymatic digestion after NaOH or H 2 SO 4 pretreatment. Characterization of the monosaccharide compositions in the KOH-extractable and non-KOH-extractable hemicelluloses indicated that arabinose substitution degree of xylan is the key factor that positively affects biomass saccharification. The xylose/arabinose ratio after individual enzyme digestion revealed that the arabinose in xylan is partially associated with cellulose in the amorphous regions, which negatively affects cellulose crystallinity for high biomass digestibility. The results provide insights into the mechanism of lignocellulose enzymatic digestion upon pretreatment, and also suggest a goal for the genetic modification of hemicelluloses towards the bioenergy crop breeding of Miscanthus and grasses.

Hemicelluloses negatively affect lignocellulose crystallinity for high biomass digestibility under NaOH and H2SO4 pretreatments in Miscanthus

Xu Ning,Zhang Wei,Ren Shuangfeng,Liu Fei,Zhao Chunqiao,Liao Haofeng,Xu Zhengdan,Huang Jiangfeng,Li Qing,Tu Yuanyuan,Yu Bin,Wang Yanting,Jiang Jianxiong,Qin Jingping,Peng Liangcai

Background Lignocellulose is the most abundant biomass on earth. However, biomass recalcitrance has become a major factor affecting biofuel production. Although cellulose crystallinity significantly influences biomass saccharification, little is known about the impact of three major wall polymers on cellulose crystallization. In this study, we selected six typical pairs of Miscanthus samples that presented different cell wall compositions, and then compared their cellulose crystallinity and biomass digestibility after various chemical pretreatments. Results A Miscanthus sample with a high hemicelluloses level was determined to have a relatively low cellulose crystallinity index (CrI) and enhanced biomass digestibility at similar rates after pretreatments of NaOH and H 2 SO 4 with three concentrations. By contrast, a Miscanthus sample with a high cellulose or lignin level showed increased CrI and low biomass saccharification, particularly after H 2 SO 4 pretreatment. Correlation analysis revealed that the cellulose CrI negatively affected biomass digestion. Increased hemicelluloses level by 25% or decreased cellulose and lignin contents by 31% and 37% were also found to result in increased hexose yields by 1.3-times to 2.2-times released from enzymatic hydrolysis after NaOH or H 2 SO 4 pretreatments. The findings indicated that hemicelluloses were the dominant and positive factor, whereas cellulose and lignin had synergistic and negative effects on biomass digestibility. Conclusions Using six pairs of Miscanthus samples with different cell wall compositions, hemicelluloses were revealed to be the dominant factor that positively determined biomass digestibility after pretreatments with NaOH or H 2 SO 4 by negatively affecting cellulose crystallinity. The results suggested potential approaches to the genetic modifications of bioenergy crops.

Synergistic effects and kinetic evidence of a transition metal-tin modified Beta zeolite on conversion of Miscanthus to lactic acid

Meng Xia,Zheng Shen,Shaoze Xiao,Bo-yu Peng,Minyan Gu,Wenjie Dong,Yalei Zhang

The direct catalytic transformation of raw lignocellulosic biomass into valuable chemicals is of great significance for sustainable production. This work reports the combination of a transition metal chromium with tin in Beta zeolites to efficiently catalyse the conversion of Miscanthus into lactic acid with a yield of 33.4% and a selectivity of 53.2%. On the basis of experiment and kinetic studies , chromium and tin were beneficial for the retro-aldol condensation and isomerization of carbohydrates, respectively. The acidity of the catalyst was investigated based on important insight into the synergetic catalytic mechanism. The strong Lewis acidity possessed by the transition metals was remarkably advantageous for catalysing the retro-aldol fragmentation reaction, while the relatively weak Lewis acidity of the tin species was considered a dominant factor in the isomerization reaction. The coupling of multifunctional active sites provided a new director for the transformation towards lactic acid formation.

Selective Hydrogenation of Acetylene to Ethylene over the Surface of Sub-2 nm Pd Nanoparticles in Miscanthus sinensis-Derived Microporous Carbon Tubes

Qingqing Guan,Jian Zhang,Liang He,Rongrong Miao,Yuzhen Shi,Ping Ning

As one of the organic carbon-rich feedstocks, Miscanthus sinensis is an interesting candidate for producing many high-value materials and chemicals. In this study, M. sinensis-derived activated carbon (msAC) particles with ca. 3.4 nm average pore size have been prepared by a simple carbonation method for supporting Pd nanoparticles (NPs) to hydrogenate acetylene. Catalytic test results showed that the 0.25% Pd/msAC catalyst could convert ∼99.9% of acetylene with ∼99.9% of ethylene selectivity. The life test result strongly demonstrated that the catalyst had a good durability for long-term (>100 h) acetylene hydrogenation with high conversion (∼99.9%) and ethylene selectivity (∼93.1%) at 260 °C with a space velocity of 80,000 h–1. The characterization results indicated that the msAC with the micro- and nanoscale pore structure and uniformly distributed oxygen-containing functional groups could efficiently disperse Pd nanoparticles and promote their Pd (111) crystal plane exposure. The above structure nature was co-contributing to the catalyst to choose the energetically favorable path for efficient acetylene hydrogenation and ethylene desorption. This work opens up valuable insights into the high-value utilization of M. sinensis biomass to design an efficient isolated Pd NP catalyst.

Miscanthus accessions distinctively accumulate cadmium for largely enhanced biomass enzymatic saccharification by increasing hemicellulose and pectin and reducing cellulose CrI and DP

Shaozhe Cheng,Hua Yu,Meng Hu,Yue Wu,Liangliang Cheng,Qiuming Cai,Yuanyuan Tu,Tao Xia,Liangcai Peng

In this study, total eight distinct Miscanthus accessions were collected from the cadmium (Cd)-supplied soil pots, and mild alkali pretreatments (0.5%, 1% NaOH) were then performed to enhance biomass enzymatic saccharification. Due to large Cd accumulation, all Miscanthus accessions showed significantly reduced cellulose levels and features (CrI, DP) with much increased hemicellulose and pectin contents in the mature stems. Under mild alkali pretreatments, all Miscanthu s samples exhibited largely increased hexoses yields released from enzymatic hydrolysis, and one desirable accession had an almost complete biomass saccharification with the hexoses yield at 100% (% cellulose). Notably, the biomass residues remained from enzymatic hydrolysis upon 1% NaOH pretreatment could absorb 73–96% Cd (% of total), suggesting an applicable approach for Cd phyto-remediation. Hence, a hypothetic model was proposed to elucidate that the enhanced biomass saccharification should be mainly due to much reduced cellulose CrI and DP in the Cd-accumulated Miscanthus accessions.

Complete conversion of lignocellulosic biomass to mixed organic acids and ethylene glycol via cascade steps

Jifeng Pang,Bo Zhang,Yu Jiang,Yu Zhao,Changzhi Li,Mingyuan Zheng,Tao Zhang

The complete conversion of hemicellulose, cellulose and lignin in lignocellulosic biomass into value-added chemicals is of great significance in biorefinery processes. Herein, a cascade-step strategy was developed for the conversion of hemicellulose and lignin into mixed organic acids, and cellulose into ethylene glycol. Typical biomass of Miscanthus was first treated with formic acid in the presence of H2O2, giving a formic acid solution and cellulosic biomass. Lignin in Miscanthus was oxidized to low polymerized organic acids through linkage cleavages and aromatic ring ruptures during the treatment process, forming a homogeneous formic acid solution with a weight yield of 95%. Hemicellulose was transformed into maleic acid at 56.2% selectivity via a hydrolysis–dehydration–oxidation process. Both hemicellulose and lignin were degraded into organic acids with an overall weight yield of 92.4%. The cellulose in the solid residue had a hydrophilic surface and is highly accessible to catalysts in the aqueous solution, and it was totally converted into ethylene glycol with a yield of up to 65.7% over a binary catalyst of H2WO4–Ru/C. Relying on such a cascade reaction strategy, the three major components of Miscanthus were transformed into mixed organic acids and ethylene glycol, which provides a potential strategy for complete valorisation of biomass into value-added chemicals.

Mechanistic insights into morphological and chemical changes during benzenesulfonic acid pretreatment and simultaneous saccharification and fermentation process for ethanol production

Xuelian Zhou,Chunlong Guan,Yexuan Xu,Shilong Yang,Chen Huang,Jiulong Sha,Hongqi Dai

The anatomical and histochemical characterization of pretreated substrates is essential for the further valorization of biomass during the biorefinery process. In this work, the benzenesulfonic acid (BA)-treated substrates were employed for simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) of ethanol for the first time. An ethanol yield of 50.36% was attained at 10% solids loading and 47.45 g/L of ethanol accumulated at 30 % solids loading. The dramatic improvements could result from the deconstruction of cell walls, which were evidenced by fluorescence microscope and confocal Raman microscopy spectra. Additionally, for a thorough comprehension of the inherent chemistry of lignin during the BA pretreatment, the changes in lignin structure features were identified for the first time by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). In summary, this study tried to probe the possibility of BA-treated Miscanthus for the SSF process and unveiled the mechanism of the efficient BA pretreatment.
