A series of Mn-doped CdS hollow sphere photocatalysts has been directly synthesized by a simple and facile hydrothermal route for the first time. It was demonstrated that GSH acts as the S source and a gas bubble-template in this process. The products were characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, HRTEM, XPS, and UV-vis spectroscopy. The as-prepared CdS and Mn-doped CdS hollow spheres all showed much higher activity than P25 under visible light (λ > 420 nm) irradiation. Among them, the 2.0 mol% Mn-doped CdS sample exhibited the highest photoactivity for the removal of organic pollutant RhB, and about 99.2% MO was decomposed after 50 min of visible light irradiation. Moreover, this catalyst also showed good stability, and after four cycles, the degradation efficiency still remained at 85%. The excellent photoactivity of the as-prepared Mn-doped CdS hollow spheres could be attributed to the synergistic effects of its appropriate band-gap structure and the special porous spherical morphology. The unique hollow sphere structure may favor the harvesting of excited light due to its special multiple scattering effect within the interior space, and the doping of Mn2+ may facilitate the generation of photoinduced electrons and hole pairs, and inhibit their recombination rate by acting as temporary trapping sites. This material may have great application potentials in environmental remediation and energy harvesting.

Mn-doped CdS quantum dot sensitized solar cells based on SnO 2 microsphere photoelectrodes are prepared with successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction method. It is found that with Mn-doped CdS quantum dot sensitizers, the photovoltaic performance of the cells based on SnO 2 microsphere photoelectrodes can obviously be enhanced. The reasons are owing to the improved light absorption and the expanded light absorption edge by doping Mn in CdS quantum dots. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy analysis found that the cells with Mn-doped CdS quantum dot sensitized SnO 2 microsphere photoelectrodes can efficiently suppress dark reaction, owing to the increased related resistance. Moreover, it is also found that the Mn-doped CdS quantum dot sensitized SnO 2 microsphere photoelectrode can increase the electron diffusion lifetime in the cell. The power conversion efficiency of the cell with 4 wt% Mn-doped CdS quantum dot sensitizers can attain to 2.80 %, with 53 % enhancement compared with that of the CdS quantum dot sensitized cell (1.83 %).

This study aimed to regulate the band structure and enhance the reduction ability of CdS by substituting it with Mn 2+ . Subsequently, this nano MnCdS solid solution was anchored on the surface of truncated octahedral Cu 2 O through a simple hydrothermal process, forming an S-scheme heterojunction at the interface between MnCdS and Cu 2 O. Equilibrating the Fermi level at the MnCdS/Cu 2 O heterojunction led to spontaneous diffusion of electrons in MnCdS to Cu 2 O, generating an internal electric field that drove the recombination of electrons in the conduction band (CB) of Cu 2 O and holes in the valence band (VB) of MnCdS. Consequently, this process preserved the powerful photogenerated electrons in the CB of MnCdS, facilitating robust photocatalytic hydrogen evolution . The MnCdS/Cu 2 O exhibited a photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate of 66.3 mmol g −1 h −1 , which was 3.4- and 54.3-times higher than that of MnCdS (19.4 mmol g −1 h −1 ) and Cu 2 O (1.2 mmol g −1 h −1 ), respectively. This study elucidates advanced S-scheme heterojunction catalyst architectures for photocatalytic hydrogen production.
