Photocatalytic hydrogen evolution is regarded as an economically viable and environmentally benign strategy. However, the practical application of photocatalytic hydrogen production is constrained by the sluggish reaction kinetics and rapid recombination of photogenerated charge carriers. Herein, a Cu 3 SnS 4 /Mn 0.3 Cd 0.7 S (CTS/MCS) S-scheme photocatalyst with photothermal effect was synthesized via an ultrasound-assisted self-assembly method and applied for the first time to photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. The hydrogen production rate of CTS/MCS-5 reached 72.5 ± 0.8 mmol/h g −1 , representing a 3.44-fold increase relative to Mn 0.3 Cd 0.7 S, and the apparent quantum yield of CTS/MCS-5 reached 17.5 % at 450 nm. The photothermal effect induced by Cu 3 SnS 4 can elevate the local surface temperature of the catalyst, providing a portion of the energy required for the reaction, thereby reducing the reaction barrier and further promoting photocatalytic reactions. This research highlights the significance of the S-scheme heterojunction and the photothermal effect as an effective strategy to enhance photocatalytic activity, offering new insights for the development of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution technology.

Engineering semiconductor materials with vacancies and co-catalysts is a valid method to improve their photocatalytic performance. Herein, we prepared S vacancies-rich Mn 0.3 Cd 0.7 S nanorods modified with β-Ni(OH) 2 nanoparticles through solvothermal and co-precipitation strategies. The as-obtained 0D/1D β-Ni(OH) 2 /Mn 0.3 Cd 0.7 S nanorods exhibit excellent visible-light H 2 -production activity up to 71.09 mmol g −1 h −1 , 5.23 times higher than pure Mn 0.3 Cd 0.7 S and better than 1 wt% Pt/Mn 0.3 Cd 0.7 S and most reported Mn x Cd 1−x S-based catalysts. The apparent quantum yield reaches 46.68% at λ = 420 nm. We found that the presence of S vacancies and β-Ni(OH) 2 enhances the transfer/separation of photogenerated carriers and increases reaction sites, which is beneficial to photocatalytic H 2 -production reaction. This work proposes a new idea for the application of metal hydroxide co-catalysts and S vacancies in sulfide materials for photocatalytic H 2 production.

The widespread application of antibiotics, such as tetracycline (TC), has led to severe environmental problems. Herein, the rod-like Mn 0.3 Cd 0.7 S (MCS) coupled with flower-like FeNi 8 -LDH self-assembled from nanosheets S-scheme heterojunction is successfully constructed by a simple physical ultrasonic-assisted combined with a grinding method. The optimized MCS/30FeNi 8 -LDH heterojunction exhibits excellent photocatalytic degradation of TC under visible light with a removal rate of 72.5 % within 30 min along with excellent cycling stability, which enhanced 14.5 and 1.68 times compared to those of pristine FeNi 8 -LDH and MCS. The correlation between S-scheme heterojunction and photocatalysis performance clarify the rapidly transfer pathway of photogenerated carriers between MCS and FeNi 8 -LDH. The trapping experiment confirms •O 2 - and h + are the primary active species, with h + playing a dominant role in the degradation process. The enhanced photocatalytic degradation performance can be attributed to the formation of S-scheme heterojunction with well-matched band alignment, which remains the powerful reduction capability of generated electrons of FeNi 8 -LDH and more robust oxidation capability of photogenerated holes of MCS. This work not only provides a potential solution for photocatalysis degrading TC, but also expands the S-scheme heterojunction constructed strategy to the realm of energy storage and conversion .

Here, a series of Mn x Cd 1-x S sosoloid composite photocatalysts with visible-light activity were first prepared by a solvothermal process. The element ratio of Cd 2+ to Mn 2+ was optimized to be Mn 0.3 Cd 0.7 S in Mn x Cd 1-x S sosoloid on account of its photocatalytic activity for H 2 evolution from H 2 O in response to visible light excitation . And on this basis, the CoO x nanopariticles were loaded on the surface of Mn 0.3 Cd 0.7 S sosoloid composite to obtain a binary p-n heterojunction of CoO x /Mn 0.3 Cd 0.7 S composite through a facile impregnation process and a high temperature sintering procedure. Benefitting from the synergistic effect of the built-in electric field, binary p-n heterojunction structure, and rearrange of the Fermi level equilibrium, the as-synthesized CoO x /Mn 0.3 Cd 0.7 S composite presents a highly enhanced photocatalytic activity for hydrogen production from H 2 O in response to visible light excitation, which is demonstrated to be 53.4 and 4.0 times higher than that of the primitive CdS and Mn 0.3 Cd 0.7 S, respectively. Furthermore, after 4 times circles of photocatalytic H 2 production tests, the CoO x /Mn 0.3 Cd 0.7 S composite still keeps 92.0 % of the original photocatalytic activity. Considering its reasonable photochemistry stability and excellent photocatalytic activity for hydrogen evolution from H 2 O under with visible light excitation, the as-synthesized CoO x /Mn 0.3 Cd 0.7 S composite has potential applications in solar hydrogen production areas.

In addition to the intrinsic driving force of photocatalysis, the external thermal field from the photothermal effect can provide additional energy to the photo-catalytic system to improve the photo-catalytic hydrogen-evolution (PHE) efficiency. Herein, based on the results of density functional theory, we designed and constructed a hollow core–shell FeNi 2 S 4 @Mn 0.3 Cd 0.7 S (NFS@MCS) S-scheme heterojunction with a photothermal effect, thereby realising a significant enhancement of the PHE performance due to the thermal effect, S-scheme heterojunction and hollow core–shell morphology. As a light collector and heat source, the hollow NFS could absorb and convert photons into heat, resulting in the increased local temperature of photocatalyst particles. Moreover, the S-scheme charge path at the interface not only improved the carrier separation efficiency but also retained a higher redox potential. All these are favourable to increase the PHE activity. The PHE tests show that 0.5 %-NFS@MCS exhibits the highest PHE rate of 17.11 mmol·g −1 ·h −1 , 7.7 times that of MCS. Moreover, through a combination of theoretical calculation and experimental evidence, the PHE mechanism of the NFS@MCS system is discussed and clarified in-depth.

The misuse of tetracycline (TC) poses a significant threat to the natural environment, necessitating the development of efficient methods for its degradation. Heterojunction photocatalysts have emerged as a promising approach for the degradation of such pollutants. This work aims to construct a novel NiWO 4 /Mn 0.3 Cd 0.7 S (NWO/MCS) S-scheme heterojunction using solvothermal coupled with mechanical mixing methods for efficient photocatalytic degradation of TC. The optimized NWO/MCS composite exhibited an 82% removal rate within 40 minutes under visible light irradiation, which represents an 18.4-fold and 1.13-fold improvement compared with pristine NWO and MCS, respectively. Various analytical methods and DFT calculations were utilized to characterize the structure and photophysical properties as well as prove the electron flow of the heterojunction, respectively. This work provides evidence of efficient charge carrier transfer between NWO and MCS within the S-scheme heterojunction, which contributes to the enhanced photocatalytic activity. The rational structural configuration of the S-scheme heterojunction has been shown to improve both the reduction and oxidation capabilities, offering a potential pathway for developing photocatalysts with high antibiotic removal efficiency.

Herein, a Mn 0.3 Cd 0.7 S/CoPB (MCS/CPB) composite with an interfacial Co S bond is successfully fabricated via an ultrasonic-assisted grinding method, forming a Schottky junction. The optimized MCS/CPB-5 achieves a remarkable hydrogen evolution rate of 96.8 ± 0.4 mmol g −1 h −1 under visible light, which is 4.12 times greater than that of pristine MCS. The integration of CoPB enhances near-infrared light absorption and photothermal conversion, thereby promoting efficient charge carrier separation and utilization. The formation of the Schottky junction suppresses charge recombination by facilitating directional electron transfer across the interface. Characterizations including Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and density functional theory calculations confirm the presence of Co S bonding and elucidated the charge transfer pathway. This study presents a promising strategy for designing non-noble metal-based photocatalysts with improved hydrogen evolution performance through synergistic photothermal and interfacial engineering.

To effectively harness solar energy, the rational construction and development of full-spectrum photocatalysts has become an appealing challenge. In this study, a novel full-spectrum responsive FeS 2 /Mn 0.3 Cd 0.7 S (FS/MCS) S-scheme photocatalyst was obtained by attaching FeS 2 nanoparticles with excellent photothermal properties on Mn 0.3 Cd 0.7 S nanorods. The photocatalytic hydrogen production rate of the optimal FS/MCS composite was 52.017 mmol·g −1 ·h −1 under full-spectrum irradiation, which was 3.88 times that of pure MCS. Based on the experimental results and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the enhanced photoactivity of FS/MCS was attributed to the synergetic effects of photothermal and S-scheme heterojunction. The photothermal effect of FeS 2 could convert the near infrared light to heat, which elevated the local temperature of photocatalyst particles, thereby promoting the photocatalytic reaction. Meanwhile, the S-scheme heterojunction between FeS 2 and Mn 0.3 Cd 0.7 S accelerated the charge transfer and suppressed the recombination of electron-hole pairs, thereby enabling efficient charge separation while maintaining high redox potentials. This work offers a novel perspective on constructing a full-spectrum-driven photothermal-assisted photocatalytic H 2 evolution system though the dual effects of photothermal and heterojunction.

Constructing heterophase junctions is an efficient strategy to address lattice mismatch in semiconductors and enhance the separation efficiency of photogenerated charge carriers. Herein, a facile approach is reported to fabricate sulfur-vacancy-rich MCS-T (Mn 0.3 Cd 0.7 S heterophase junction) by regulating the solvent composition during solvothermal synthesis. The charge carrier separation and transport kinetics at MCS-T are systematically unraveled by combining spectroscopic characterizations, electrochemical measurements and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Under visible-light irradiation, MCS-T achieves a hydrogen evolution rate of 18.66 ± 0.27 mmol·g −1 ·h −1 in simulated seawater, which is 2.3 and 5.8 times higher than those of MCS-ZB (cubic-phase Mn 0.3 Cd 0.7 S) and MCS-WZ (hexagonal-phase Mn 0.3 Cd 0.7 S), respectively. Furthermore, the as-prepared catalyst exhibits excellent corrosion resistance, with no obvious degradation in hydrogen evolution activity observed after a 20 h cyclic stability test. This work highlights the great potential of metal sulfide heterophase junctions in photocatalytic applications and provides a rational guideline for realizing efficient charge transfer and enhanced photocatalytic performance. Improving the stability and electron-hole separation efficiency of semiconductor photocatalysts has always been a hot topic in the field of catalysis. In the present study, a novel Cu 2-x S@Mn 0.3 Cd 0.7 S (Cu 2-x S@MCS) core-shell heterojunction has been constructed by the in-situ traditional hydrothermal reaction on the basis of hollow Cu 2-x S nanocubes. The optimized Cu 2-x S@MCS-2 photocatalyst with expanded light absorption exhibits excellent stability and a higher hydrogen evolution rate of 42.43 mmol g −1 h −1 , which is 2.3 times and more than 1400 times contrasting to the pure Mn 0.3 Cd 0.7 S and Cu 2-x S, respectively. Multiple characterizations and structure analysis revealed that the Cu 2-x S@MCS heterojunction possesses outstanding charge separation efficiency and a wider specific surface area which can provide abundant active sites. Furthermore, the mechanism of photocatalytic H 2 evolution for Cu 2-x S@Mn 0.3 Cd 0.7 S S-scheme heterojunction is also proposed. This work thus provides a favorable strategy to inhibit the photogenerated charge carrier recombination and drive highly efficient photocatalytic hydrogen generation by synthesizing photocatalyst with in situ core-shell structures.

Some nonstoichiometric semiconductors exhibit excellent near-infrared (NIR) absorption due to their unique localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect, which is conducive to improving efficiency of light energy conversion to make them promising candidates for efficient photocatalytic hydrogen (H 2 ) evolution. Herein, we constructed a novel 1D/1D MoO 3-x /Mn 0.3 Cd 0.7 S (MO/MCS) S-scheme heterojunction with LSPR and photothermal double effects for boosted full solar spectrum-driven H 2 evolution. The light absorption of MO/MCS was expanded to NIR region through the LSPR effect of MO. Meanwhile, the impressive photothermal effect of MO can increase the surface temperature of the photocatalyst particles under light irradiation, which can further accelerate the photoreaction. According to the experimental and theoretical calculation results, the formation of S-scheme heterojunction was confirmed, which boosted the separation of photo-induced carriers. Consequently, the H 2 evolution performance of judiciously designed MO/MCS composites was significantly enhanced with an optimal H 2 evolution of 2.235 mmol·g −1 ·h −1 , 30.6 times that of pure MCS. This work provides a valuable insight into the development of highly efficient full solar spectrum-driven photocatalysts through utilizing the synergetic effects of LSPR effect, photothermal effect, and S-scheme heterojunction.
