A series of novel red emitting Mn2+-activated SrZnSO phosphors were successfully synthesized by solid-state reaction at high temperature. The photoluminescence (PL) and mechanoluminescence (ML) properties of these Mn2+-activated SrZnSO phosphors with different Mn2+ concentrations were investigated. With increasing the concentration of Mn2+ from x = 0 to 0.04, the unit cell volume increased from 153.82 to 154.19 Å3 while the optical band gap decreased from 3.74 to 3.43 eV. The site occupation of Mn2+ in the host lattice was demonstrated by Rietveld refinement, the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectrum, and the spectroscopic properties. A broad band emission peak at 603 nm of SrZn1−xMnxSO (0.001 ≤ x ≤ 0.04) with an excitation wavelength of 318 nm was attributed to electronic transitions of Mn2+ from the 4T1(4G) level to the 6A1(6S) level. The lifetime of SrZn1−xMnxSO (0.001 ≤ x ≤ 0.04) decreased monotonously from 2.97 to 0.82 ms with increasing Mn2+ concentration. In particular, intense emission of red light from SrZn1−xMnxSO (0.001 ≤ x ≤ 0.04) under compressive load could be observed even with the naked eye, indicating that SrZn1−xMnxSO could be used for stress sensors or stress imaging. There was a linear correlation between the ML intensity and external load in SrZn1−xMnxSO, and the ML intensity could be recovered under UV light irradiation. Considering its advantages of non-destruction, reproducibility, and high ML intensity, SrZn1−xMnxSO might be useful for non-destructive detection of stress.

To settle the low sensitivity of luminescent manometers, the Mn 2+ -activated NaY 9 (SiO 4 ) 6 O 2 red-emitting phosphors with splendid pressure sensing performances are developed. Excited by 408 nm, the resulting products emit bright red emission originating from 4 T 1 ( 4 G) → 6 A 1 transition of Mn 2+ , in which the optimal concentration of the activator ion is ≈1 mol%. Moreover, the admirable thermal stability of the developed phosphors is studied and confirmed by the temperature-dependent emission spectra, based on which the activation energy is derived to be 0.275 eV. By analyzing the pressure-dependent Raman spectra, the structural stability of the synthesized compounds at extreme conditions is verified. Furthermore, the designed phosphors exhibit remarkable spectral red-shift at elevated pressure. Especially, as pressure increases from 0.75 to 7.16 GPa, the emission band centroid shifts from 617.2 to 663.4 nm, resulting in a high sensitivity (d λ /d P ) of 7.00 nm GPa −1 , whereas the full width at half maximum (FWHM) increases from 83.0 to 110.6 nm, leading to the ultra-high sensitivity (dFWHM/d P ) of 10.13 nm GPa −1 . These achievements manifest that the designed red-emitting phosphors are appropriate for ultrasensitive optical manometry. More importantly, the developed manometer is a current global leader in sensitivity, when operating in the band-width mode, that is, FWHM.

Mechanoluminescence (ML) is one kind of mechanical-to-optical energy conversion, and a strategy toward achieving bright elastic ML emission is strongly anticipated for ML application. Herein, a ternary-host strategy is proposed for synthesizing heterojunction ML materials with eye-visible elastic ML under an ultralow pressure of 2 N, in which ZnS, CaCO3, and SrCO3 are employed as precursors to prepare the ternary-host (Ca0.5Sr0.5)ZnOS/xZnS. Upon partially substituting the precursor ZnS with MnCO3, the Mn2+ activator could introduce luminescent centers and carrier traps into the ternary-host (Ca0.5Sr0.5)ZnOS/xZnS and enable achieving a series of (Ca0.5Sr0.5)ZnOS/xZnS/Mn2+ phosphors with bright and pressure-sensitive elastic ML. The (Ca0.5Sr0.5)ZnOS/xZnS/Mn2+ phosphors not only exhibit eye-visible red ML under ambient conditions without any preirradiation but can also display a linearly enhanced ML intensity along with the enlarged external force at a 2 N interval as well as regeneratable ML upon repetitively applying an external force 20 times. The maximum emission wavelength of ML can be conveniently modulated from 623 to 658 nm by adjusting the ZnS content of (Ca0.5Sr0.5)ZnOS/xZnS/Mn2+ phosphors.

Mn2+-doped phosphors emitting green light have garnered significant interest due to their potential applications in display technologies and solid-state lighting. To facilitate the rapid synthesis of high-performance Mn2+-activated green phosphors, this research optimizes a microwave-assisted solid-state (MASS) method for the preparation of Na2ZnGeO4:Mn2+. Leveraging the unique attributes of the MASS technique, a systematic investigation into the applicability of various Mn-source precursors was conducted. Additionally, the integration of the MASS approach with traditional solid-state reaction (SSR) methods was assessed. The findings indicate that the MASS technique effectively incorporates Mn ions from diverse precursors (including higher oxidation states of manganese) into the crystal lattice, resulting in efficient green emission from Mn2+. Notably, the photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of the sample utilizing MnCO3as the manganese precursor was recorded at 2.67%, whereas the sample synthesized from MnO2exhibited a remarkable PLQY of 17.69%. Moreover, the post-treatment of SSR-derived samples through the MASS process significantly enhanced the PLQY from 0.67% to 8.66%. These results underscore the promise of the MASS method as a novel and efficient synthesis strategy for the rapid and scalable production of Mn2+-doped green luminescent materials.

Photothermal sensing is crucial for the creation of smart wearable devices. However, the discovery of luminescent materials with suitable dual-wavelength emissions is a great challenge for the construction of stable wearable optical fibre temperature sensors. Benefiting from the Mn 2+ -Mn 2+ superexchange interactions, a dual-wavelength (530/650 nm)-emitting material Li 2 ZnSiO 4 :Mn 2+ is presented via simple increasing the Mn 2+ concentration, wherein the two emission bands have different temperature-dependent emission behaviours, but exhibit quite similar excitation spectra. Density functional theory calculations, coupled with extended X-ray absorption fine structure and electron-diffraction analyses reveal the origins of the two emission bands in this material. A wearable optical temperature sensor is fabricated by incorporating Li 2 ZnSiO 4 :Mn 2+ in stretchable elastomer-based optical fibres, which can provide thermal-sensitive emissions at dual- wavelengths for stable ratiometric temperature sensing with good precision and repeatability. More importantly, a wearable mask integrated with this stretchable fibre sensor is demonstrated for the detection of physiological thermal changes, showing great potential for use as a wearable health monitor. This study also provides a framework for creating transition-metal-activated luminescence materials.
