The second near-infrared window (NIR-II, 1000–1400 nm) is ideal for fluorescence imaging owing to negligible tissue scattering and minimal autofluorescence. NIR-II luminescence nanophosphors are promising materials for fluorescence imaging. Mn5+ is emerging as a new luminescent indicator owing to its typical NIR-I (800 nm) to NIR-II (1190 nm) downconversion luminescence. Herein, we report a facile synthesis approach to prepare Mn5+ doped Ba3(MO4)2 (M = V, P) nanoparticles with a remarkably sharp emission peak around 1190 nm in the NIR-II region for the first time to our knowledge. The developed two-step approach based on efficient anion exchange reaction is able to not only stabilize the valence but also keep the controlled morphology and uniform size. It is highly possible that the general approach will provide a new perspective on synthesizing special valence ion doped nanosized materials.

The development of highly efficient near-infrared-II (NIR-II) emission phosphors is crucial for advancing compact light sources and their emerging applications. However, the discovery of target phosphors remains a major challenge. Herein, a high-efficiency apatite phosphor, Ba10(PO4)6F2:Mn5+, peaking at 1171 nm with a full width at half-maximum of 11 nm, is synthesized under an oxygen atmosphere. Benefiting from the crystallographic site confinement and oxygen partial pressure control in stabilizing pentavalent manganese, the phosphor exhibits a record internal quantum efficiency (IQE) of 84.2% and external QE of 56%, alongside good thermal stability. By combining Ba10(PO4)6F2:Mn5+ with a red light-emitting diode (LED) chip, a phosphor-converted compact LED with an NIR-II output power of 40.86 mW at 300 mA and a high photoelectric conversion efficiency of 6.82% is presented, demonstrating applications in nondestructive testing, etc. Furthermore, the different temperature-dependent behaviors of the zero-phonon line emission (1171 nm) and vibrational sidebands (1224/1289 nm) of Mn5+ in Ba10(PO4)6F2:Mn5+ enable the fabrication of a high-efficiency fluorescence intensity ratio optical fiber temperature sensor, exhibiting a maximum relative sensitivity value of 0.518% K–1 at 373 K. This work offers some insights into Mn5+-activated high-efficiency NIR-II emission phosphors and their potential for temperature sensing and compact light source applications.

Ba 6 Na 2 M 2 Mn 2 O 17 (M=Nb, Ta) oxides were synthesized by high-temperature solid-state reaction. The compounds adopt 6-layer perovskite-related structure (referred to as 6C) in P 3 ̅ m 1, analogous to Ba 6 Na 2 Nb 2 P 2 O 17 . The 6C structure consists of cubic ( c ) BaO 3 layers and pseudo-cubic ( c' ) oxygen-vacancy-ordered BaO 2 layers stacked according to a sequence of c'ccccc . Ordering of oxygen vacancies in oxygen-deficient c' -BaO 2 layers leads to two successive isolated tetrahedral layers, which stabilize an unusual +5 oxidation state for Mn cations in the tetrahedral sites. In Ba 6 Na 2 M 2 Mn 2 O 17 , these two Mn 5+ O 4 layers are sandwiched by two single octahedral NaO 6 layers that connected by two successive octahedral NbO 6 layers, forming alternative 2:1-ordered (Ba 3 NaM 2 O 9 ) - and (Ba 3 NaMn 2 O 8 ) + perovskite-like units along the stacking direction. The Mn 5+ O 4 tetrahedral units act as a turquoise chromophore in Ba 6 Na 2 M 2 Mn 2 O 17 , making these two compounds potential turquoise-coloring materials for the cool pigments .

In recent years, second near-infrared window emitting phosphors have gained widespread research interest due to their excellent tissue penetration and high imaging accuracy. In this work, a new type of Ba 2 Ti 1- x Mn x O 4+ x /2 (0.02 ≤ x ≤ 0.10) phosphors were successfully prepared by high-temperature solid-phase method and their potential in luminescence thermometry is evaluated. PL and PLE spectral analysis prove that the optimal Mn doping concentration is x = 0.03. The as-synthesized phosphors exhibit a broad excitation band of 550–1000 nm and a narrow emission band of 1170–1220 nm. The electronic structures of the original Ba 2 TiO 4 and Mn-doped Ba 2 TiO 4 were calculated and analyzed using the DFT + U method, which facilitates a better understanding of the impact of Mn doping on the luminescent properties of Ba 2 TiO 4 . The luminescence decay lifetime is measured to be 101.44 μs at room temperature, which is a giant enhancement compared to conventional nanosecond lifetime phosphor, indicating a progress in imaging accuracy. In addition, the as-synthesized phosphors maintain over 75 % of the maximum luminescence intensity within the physiological temperature range. The potential applications in luminescence temperature measurement were also analyzed by the LIR ratio method, and the relative sensitivity could reach 2.31 %K −1 at 283 K, which is a relatively high value in the second near-infrared window. Therefore, the as-synthesized Ba 2 Ti 1- x Mn x O 4+ x /2 (0.02 ≤ x ≤ 0.10) phosphors demonstrate great potential in NIR applications such as biological imaging and luminescent thermometry.

The emission peak of Mn 5+ lies in the second near-infrared window (NIR-II) biological transparency window, and it exhibits outstanding application prospects in deep-tissue bioimaging, non-contact optical thermometry, and related fields. In this work, a novel Mn 5+ -activated Ba 1.9 Sr 0.1 TiO 4 NIR-II phosphor is designed and synthesized via a high-temperature solid-state reaction, where partial Sr 2+ substitution for Ba 2+ enables precise crystal field modulation around Mn 5+ ions. Mn K-edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy confirms that Mn ions are stabilized in the +5 oxidation state. The optimized BSTO: 0.1 % Mn 5+ phosphor shows efficient 680 nm red light excitation and a characteristic narrowband NIR-II emission at 1190 nm from the 1 E → 3 A 2 transition of Mn 5+ , with a long luminescence lifetime of 184.9 μs and excellent thermal stability. Density functional theory with Hubbard U correction (DFT + U) calculations further reveal that Sr 2+ substitution induces controllable lattice contraction and local structural distortion, which modulates the host electronic structure and enhances the stability of Mn 5+ luminescent centers. Furthermore, the phosphor delivers a maximum relative temperature sensitivity of 2.24 % K −1 via the luminescence intensity ratio technique. A proof-of-concept NIR phosphor-converted light-emitting diode fabricated with the as-prepared phosphor realizes clear NIR penetration imaging.

Mn-doped Ba 7 Al 2- x Mn x O 10+ y (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.7) samples with intense blue colors are successfully prepared by solid state reactions. With the increase of Mn content, the colors of compounds are tuned from cyan to ocean blue. FT-IR absorption spectrum and 27 Al NMR spectrum indicate that the structure contains a dominating portion of Al–O tetrahedral sites while a small number of Al–O octahedral sites may also exist. The oxidation state of Mn is proved to be +5. Based on all the analysis, the intense blue shades of the samples are proposed as the d-d transition of Mn 5+ ions in [AlO 4 ] tetrahedral sites.

The development of high-performance narrowband near-infrared second window (NIR-II) phosphors remains a critical challenge in the fields of advanced bioimaging and optical thermometry. Herein, a series of Mn 5+ -doped ABaPO 4 (A = Li, Na, K) phosphors are synthesized via conventional solid-state method, and the effect of A-site alkali metal cations on their crystal structure and luminescence properties is comparatively investigated. Mn K -edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy unambiguously confirms that Mn ions are predominantly stabilized in the +5 oxidation state and exclusively occupy tetrahedral [PO 4 ] sites in all three hosts. All samples exhibit characteristic narrowband NIR-II emission in the 1160-1200 nm range originating from the 1 E → 3 A 2 spin-forbidden transition of Mn 5+ . The lattice distortion induced by different A-site cations significantly modulates the doping limit, crystal field strength, thermal stability and temperature sensing performance of Mn 5+ ions. All three Mn 5+ -doped hosts exhibit good thermal stability. The fluorescence decay lifetime of LiBaPO 4 : Mn 5+ reaches 772.436 μs NaBaPO 4 : Mn 5+ shows unique energy level splitting and achieves a maximum relative temperature sensitivity of 2.43% K −1 based on the fluorescence intensity ratio technique. KBaPO 4 : Mn 5+ possesses a highly symmetric crystal lattice and a higher doping limit, with a thermal quenching activation energy ( ΔE ) of 0.414 eV. This work not only provides three promising NIR-II phosphors for bioimaging and optical thermometry, but also offers new insights into the research of Mn 5+ -activated phosphate systems.
