A novel dual S-scheme Co9S8/MnCdS/Co3O4 heterojunction for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution under visible light irradiation

Congcong Wang,Suili Shi,Boya Liu,Guorong Wang,Zhiliang Jin

Rational design and synthesis of a unique heterojunction photocatalyst structure is an important strategy to enhance its performance and structural stability. Herein, Co9S8/MnCdS/Co3O4 photocatalysts with double S-scheme heterojunctions were successfully prepared by coupling Co9S8 and Co3O4 sheet structures with n-type MnCdS nanoparticles through a simple solvothermal and mechanical mixing method. The construction of the dual S-scheme heterostructure offers the possibility to expand the light absorption range, extend the carrier lifetime and maximise the redox capacity. In addition, the mechanism of charge transfer and the reason for the improvement of photocatalytic activity were explored through photoelectrochemical characterization. The lamellar structures of Co9S8 and Co3O4 not only provide excellent dispersion and slow down the agglomeration of MnCdS nanoparticles, but also promote charge transfer, which improves the photocatalytic hydrogen production effect. Under simulated solar irradiation, the evolution rate of H2 after 5 h was as high as 46.44 μmol, which was 3.49 and 1.49 times higher than those of pristine MnCdS and MnCdS/Co3O4, respectively. Meanwhile, it has good stability under 20 h irradiation. This work demonstrates a novel idea for the rational design of double S-scheme photocatalysts with efficient space separation.

Visible-light-driven two dimensional metal-organic framework modified manganese cadmium sulfide for efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Zhiliang Jin,Haiming Gong,Hongying Li

The morphology modification and the construction of heterojunction of the photocatalyst are considered as the main means to significantly improve the performance of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. In this study, Mn 0.2 Cd 0.8 S nanorods are successfully assembled on the surface of Ni-MOF-74 with flake morphology. Specifically, the Ni-S bond is constructed between Ni-MOF-74 and Mn 0.2 Cd 0.8 S, which provides a unique transfer channel for photo-induced carriers. Meanwhile, the electrons in the conduction band of Mn 0.2 Cd 0.8 S can be injected into the conduction band of Ni-MOF-74 quickly due to the potential energy difference between the two. This shows that the recombination of photogenerated carriers in Mn 0.2 Cd 0.8 S can be greatly inhibited. Fluorescence spectroscopy and electrochemical characterization reveal that the composite catalyst has the longest carrier lifetime, the fastest charge transfer rate and the lowest overpotential compared with the Mn 0.2 Cd 0.8 S and Ni-MOF-74. The optimal hydrogen production rate of the composite can reach 7.104 mmol g −1 h −1 , which is 6.96 times that of Mn 0.2 Cd 0.8 S. This work provides a novel strategy for the modification of MnCdS-based photocatalysts by metal–organic framework materials.

Mn0.05Cd0.95S decorated MOF-derived Co9S8 hollow polyhedron for efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Peng Su,Hai Liu,Qingxiang Ma,Zhiliang Jin

Summary The photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction is one of the important ways to convert solar energy into renewable hydrogen. In this work, the Co 9 S 8 hollow polyhedron was formed after sulfidation and calcination with the metal-organic framework ZIF-67. The hollow polyhedron Co 9 S 8 provides abundant support sites for Mn 0.05 Cd 0.95 S and effectively reduces the agglomeration degree of Mn 0.05 Cd 0.95 S. The Co 9 S 8 hollow polyhedron as the reaction site has a large specific surface area and a mesoporous structure, which is beneficial to the progress of the photocatalytic reaction. A series of tests showed that the introduction of Co 9 S 8 hollow polyhedron significantly improved the light-trapping ability and exposed more reaction sites. Co 9 S 8 hollow polyhedrons are used as electron capture sites, which can effectively collect electrons and induce the interface charge transfer of Mn 0.05 Cd 0.95 S to Co 9 S 8 . Because the Co 9 S 8 -Mn 0.05 Cd 0.95 S composite catalyst had a strong light-trapping ability, abundant reaction sites and Co 9 S 8 -Mn 0.05 Cd 0.95 S heterojunction accelerate the separation and transfer of charges. Therefore, the hydrogen evolution rate of the 10%Co 9 S 8 -Mn 0.05 Cd 0.95 S composite catalyst was relatively high, which was 13.369 mmol g −1 h −1 . In addition, the 10%Co 9 S 8 -Mn 0.05 Cd 0.95 S composite catalyst still has good hydrogen evolution stability after four cycles. This research may supply a new idea for the preparation of high-efficiency photocatalysts with hollow structures. Novelty Statement The Co 9 S 8 hollow polyhedron provides abundant support sites for M 0.05 C 0.95 S particles, which effectively reduces the degree of agglomeration. The Co 9 S 8 -M 0.05 C 0.95 S heterojunction catalyst not only accelerates the migration and transfer of electrons, but also provides abundant reaction sites. Therefore, the Co 9 S 8 -M 0.05 C 0.95 S composite catalyst has good catalytic activity.

Photocatalytic hydrogen energy recovery from sulfide-containing wastewater using thiol-UiO-66 modified Mn0.5Cd0.5S nanocomposites

Xifei Zhou,Sijia Liu,Changqing Yang,Junxian Qin,Yun Hu

The worldwide environmental pollution and energy crisis have become two main challenges currently. To this end, we aim to build a win–win strategy of clean hydrogen energy recovery with simultaneous environmental detoxification by treating sulfide-containing wastewater in a non-hazardous manner. In this study, we designed a heterostructure photocatalyst with in situ growth of MnCdS nanoparticles on thiol-functionalized UiO-66-based materials (UiOS-MCS). A series of characterization analyses showed that UiOS-MCS nanocomposites held favorable properties of efficient charge separation and migration, which thanked to well-matched band structure and tight interfacial contacts via thiol-linked bonds that greatly facilitated the transfer of photogenerated charge carriers. The optimal nanocomposite of 0.5UiOS-MCS exhibited excellent photocatalytic activity under visible light irradiation, with an impressive hydrogen evolution of 3179.36 μmol g −1 h −1 and a significant removal of sulfide contaminants in the wastewater of about 90%, selectively generating valuable oxidation product of monomeric sulfur. The mechanism analysis demonstrated that the main photoactive species required for hydrogen production by photoreduction (electrons) and sulfide removal by photooxidation (holes) were independent of each other, and that the electron-hole division of collaboration ensured an efficient and synergistic redox reaction. This work offers a promising strategy for the recovery of energy stored in wastewater and environmental remediation.

ZIF-67-derived CoP and MnCdS are used to construct a Schottky junction for highly efficient photocatalytic hydrogen and hydrogen peroxide production

Rongfeng Guan,Ze Liu,Changlei Huang,Jiacheng Liu,Changjian Zhou

Developing a bifunctional photocatalytic system that combines efficient hydrogen evolution and hydrogen peroxide generation is of great significance for achieving solar-driven water splitting and green oxidant synthesis. In this study, a cobalt phosphide (CoP) cocatalyst with metalloid conductivity and porous structure was prepared by phosphorizing ZIF-67, and then composited with MnCdS solid solution via a one-pot hydrothermal method, successfully constructing a MnCdS@ZIF/P (MCS@Z/P) Schottky junction photocatalyst with intimate interfacial contact. The Mn doping strategy effectively regulated the band structure of CdS, not only narrowing the bandgap from 2.27 eV to 2.17 eV but also shifting the valence band maximum upward, thereby significantly enhancing visible light absorption and hole oxidation potential. After contacting with high-work-function CoP, a strong built-in electric field is formed at the interface, efficient driving directional transfer of photogenerated electrons from MnCdS to CoP. Under visible light irradiation, the optimized MCS@10Z/P catalyst exhibits excellent photocatalytic activity for both H 2 evolution (42.33 mmol·g −1 ·h −1 ) and H 2 O 2 production (1951.09 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 in air) in two independent reaction systems. Mechanistic studies reveal that the introduction of CoP not only serves as an efficient electron transport medium, but also shifts the oxygen reduction pathway from an inefficient single-electron process to a highly efficient two-electron dominant pathway by optimizing the *OOH intermediate adsorption free energy. The Gibbs free energy(ΔG H ) of the optimal sample is reduced to 0.13 eV, which significantly reduces the reaction energy barrier. This work provides new insights into the design of efficient bifunctional Schottky junction photocatalysts based on MOF-derived materials.

Synergistic regulation of directional electron transfer by built-in electric field and selenium vacancies in a MnCdS-CoSeV Schottky junction toward efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Li Chen,Xinyuan Zang,Yani Dong,Jiaxin Liu,Guangmin Ren,Tuo Guo,Qingjie Guo

Photocatalytic performance frequently encounters limitations due to slow water activation kinetics and a low density of active sites. Here, a MnCdS-CoSe V (MCS-CoSe V ) composite catalyst with a Schottky junction was constructed via Se-vacancy engineering, thereby enhancing charge-transfer efficiency. Owing to the rational distribution of active sites and the efficient electron-hole separation induced by the Schottky junction, MnCdS-CoSe V exhibits enhanced redox capability. The MCS-CoSe V photocatalyst achieves a hydrogen production rate of 46.11 mmol/g/h, approximately three times higher than that of pristine MnCdS (MCS). It exhibits an apparent quantum efficiency of 15.41% under 420 nm irradiation. Moreover, the optimized sample exhibits direct photoreduction of polyethylene terephthalate (PET), with formic acid and acetic acid production rates of 0.64 and 0.32 mmol/g/h, respectively. Experimental characterizations and Density Functional Theory (DFT) reveal that the Schottky junction establishes an interfacial electric field that directs charge carrier migration. Meanwhile, adjusting the surface charge distribution disrupts the hydrogen-bond interactions between interfacial water molecules, leading to facilitated water activation. Se vacancy incorporation effectively modulates the adsorption-desorption equilibrium of hydrogen intermediates. Overall, this work provides mechanistic insights that can guide the rational construction of efficient defect-engineered Schottky heterostructures for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER).
