MnO2 Nanoflowers Decorated on ZIF-8-ZnO with Ni Foam Supportfor High-Performance Supercapacitors

Xueyang Wang,Fanshu Yuan,Dan Xue,Jie Liu,Jie Wei,Yiwen Wang,Jiahui Wang,Qinghua Qu,Qianli Zhang

Graphical A binder-free electrode was constructed by decorating MnO 2 nanoflowers onto the hybrid material of ZIF-8/ZnO, as derived from ZIF-8 via pyrolysis. Both the composite electrode and the NF/ZIF-8-ZnO/MnO 2 //activated carbon (AC) asymmetric supercapacitor demonstrate excellent electrochemical performance, showing that NF/ZIF-8-ZnO/MnO 2 is a promising candidate for supercapacitors due to the synergistic contribution of ZIF-8, ZnO and MnO 2 . In this study, ZIF-8 (Zn(MeIn) 2 , MeIn=2-methylimidazole) was synthesized directly on Ni foam with the use of polydopamine (PDA). By following a hydrothermal process, MnO 2 nanoflowers were decorated on the hybrid material of ZIF-8/ZnO, as derived from ZIF-8 via pyrolysis at 500 °C under nitrogen flow. The produced binder-free electrode (NF/ZIF-8-ZnO/MnO 2 ) demonstrated an excellent electrochemical performance for supercapacitors, including a specific capacitance of 2005 F g −1 at 2 A g −1 and a fairly high cycling stability (90.74% retention after 4000 cycles). Furthermore, a NF/ZIF-8-ZnO/MnO 2 //activated carbon (AC) asymmetric supercapacitor showed an energy density of 70.57 Wh kg −1 given a power density of 112.45 kW kg −1 . These results demonstrate that NF/ZIF-8-ZnO/MnO 2 is a promising candidate for supercapacitors due to the synergistic contribution of ZIF-8, ZnO and MnO 2 .

Enhanced oxidase-like activity of Mo-MnO2 nanozymes for colorimetric sensing of isoniazid and ascorbic acid

Xiufeng Wang,Wenhui Ai,Ge Chen,Yao Jin,Jiayao Chen,Fang Wang,Ting Zhou,Guodong Zhang,Zhiqing Zhang

A novel Mo-MnO 2 nanoflowers (NFs) with oxidase-like (OXD-like) activity was performed by microwave-assisted hydrothermal synthesis, and the doping of Mo resulted in enhanced enzyme-like activity and stronger affinity for the chromogenic substrate 3,3′,5,5′-Tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) than single MnO 2 by the same synthesis method. In the presence of oxygen, Mo-MnO 2 NFs oxidized the colorless TMB to blue oxTMB, and the addition of isoniazid and ascorbic acid inhibited the color development reaction. Besides, it was further investigated that the inhibitory mechanism of INH and AA on the color development reaction of Mo-MnO 2 -TMB system, mainly due to the electrostatic interaction. The absorbance change of oxTMB at 652 nm could be used to quantitative detect isoniazid (INH) and ascorbic acid (AA). The linear ranges of colorimetric detection were 1–40 μM for INH and 1–30 μM for AA, and the limits of detection (LOD) were 0.436 μM for INH and 0.579 μM for AA, respectively. The successful application of this sensing platform in real samples further validated its practicality, demonstrating the broad potential in the field of colorimetric sensing.

MnO2 nanoflowers based colorimetric and fluorescent dual-mode aptasensor for sensitive detection of aflatoxin B1 in milk

Shuofeng Li,Fangfang Wang,Bin Zhao,Chun Wang,Zhi Wang,Qiuhua Wu

Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) with tremendous toxic effects has caused a serious threat to food security. Accurate quantification of AFB1 in food can effectively prevent the risk of human intake of AFB1. Herein, a colorimetric and fluorescent dual-mode aptasensor for accurate and sensitive detection of AFB1 has been developed based on MnO 2 nanoflowers (MnO 2 NFs) for the first time. MnO 2 NFs could catalyze the oxidation of 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) into blue oxidation product (TMBox) by H 2 O 2 , which would be used for visible detection of AFB1. Simultaneously, MnO 2 NFs can be served as a signal amplifier and reduced by ascorbic acid to generate lots of Mn 2+ which would quench the fluorescence of calcein for fluorescent detection of AFB1. Both colorimetric and fluorescent methods have been successfully applied for determination of AFB1 in milk samples with satisfactory results. The proposed dual-mode detection method with high detection sensitivity and accuracy showed great promise for monitoring AFB1 in food.

Pd/δ-MnO2 nanoflower arrays cordierite monolithic catalyst toward toluene and o-xylene combustion

Li Yongfeng,Liao Qianyan,Ling Weizhao,Ye Fan,Liu Fangfang,Zhang Xipeng,He Jiajun,Cheng Gao

Exploring high-efficiency and stable monolithic structured catalysts is vital for catalytic combustion of volatile organic compounds. Herein, we prepared a series of Pd/δ-MnO2 nanoflower arrays monolithic integrated catalysts (0.01–0.07 wt% theoretical Pd loading) via the hydrothermal growth of δ-MnO2 nanoflowers onto the honeycomb cordierite, which subsequently served as the carrier for loading the Pd nanoparticles (NPs) through the electroless plating route. Moreover, we characterized the resulting monolithic integrated catalysts in detail and evaluated their catalytic activities for toluene combustion, in comparison to the controlled samples including only Pd NPs loading and the δ-MnO2 nanoflower arrays. Amongst all the monolithic samples, the Pd/δ-MnO2 nanoflower arrays monolithic catalyst with 0.05 wt% theoretical Pd loading delivered the best catalytic performance, reaching 90% toluene conversion at 221°C at a gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) of 10,000 h−1. Moreover, this sample displayed superior catalytic activity for o-xylene combustion under a GHSV of 10,000 h−1. The monolithic sample with optimal catalytic activity also displayed excellent catalytic stability after 30 h constant reaction at 210 and 221°C.

Rolling circle amplification promoted magneto-controlled photoelectrochemical biosensor for organophosphorus pesticides based on dissolution of core-shell MnO2 nanoflower@CdS mediated by butyrylcholinesterase

Tang Juan,Li Jingjing,Xiong Pengyuan,Sun Yuanfang,Zeng Zhiyao,Tian Xiaochun,Tang Dianping

A photoelectrochemical (PEC) aptasensing platform is devised for sensitive detection of an organophosphorus pesticide based on dissolution of core-shell MnO 2 nanoflower@CdS (MnO 2 NF@CdS) by thiocholine (TCh). TCH is produced from the butyrylcholinesterase-acetylthiocholine system, accompanied by target-triggered rolling circle amplification (RCA). The core-shell MnO 2 NF@CdS with excellent PEC performance was synthesized and employed as a photo-sensing platform. The target was detected on a functionalized magnetic probe with the corresponding aptamer. Upon malathion introduction, the aptamer was detached from the magnetic beads, while capture DNA (cDNA, with primer fragment) remained on the beads. The primer fragment in cDNA can trigger the RCA reaction to form a long single-stranded DNA (ssDNA). Furthermore, a large number of butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) were assembled on the long ssDNA strands through the hybridization with the S 2 -Au-BChE probe. Thereafter, TCh generated from hydrolysis of ATCh by BChE can reduce MnO 2 NF (core) to Mn 2+ and release the CdS nanoparticles (shell) from the platform electrode, significantly enhancing the PEC signal. Under optimal conditions, the proposed aptasensor exhibited high sensitivity for malathion with a low detection limit of 0.68 pg mL −1 . Meanwhile, it also presents outstanding specificity, reproducibility, and stability. Importantly, the sensing platform provides a new concept for detection of pesticide. Herein, this work devised a photoelectrochemical (PEC) aptasensing platform for sensitive detection of organophosphorus pesticide based on dissolution of core-shell MnO 2 nanoflower@CdS (MnO 2 NF@CdS) by the as-produced thiocholine (TCh) from the butyrylcholinesterase-acetylthiocholine system, accompanying with the target-triggered rolling circle amplification (RCA).

CeO2 QDs anchored on MnO2 nanoflowers with multiple synergistic effects for amplified tumour therapy

Yuyan Yan,Yafei Hou,Huijun Zhang,Wenqing Gao,Renlu Han,Jiancheng Yu,Long Xu,Keqi Tang

Chemodynamic therapy (CDT) is an emerging tumour-specific therapeutic technology. However, the relatively insufficient catalytic activity of CDT agents in the tumour microenvironment (TME) limits their biomedical application. In addition, severe hypoxia and glutathione (GSH) overexpression in the TME greatly limit the antitumour efficiency of monotherapy. Herein, a cancer cell membrane-camouflaged and ultrasmall CeO 2 -decorated MnO 2 (mMC) composite is developed for amplified CDT, photodynamic therapy (PDT) and photothermal therapy (PTT). Due to the homotypic targeting ability of cancer cell membranes, mMC nanoparticles preferentially accumulate in tumour tissue. In the TME, CeO 2 acts as a highly efficient CDT agent to convert endogenous H 2 O 2 to toxic reactive oxygen species (ROS) for killing cancer cells. Meanwhile, MnO 2 irradiated with near-infrared (NIR) light displays prominent hyperthermia and ROS generation performance to perform PTT and PDT. Moreover, MnO 2 can produce oxygen to ameliorate hypoxia and deplete GSH to relieve the antioxidant capability of tumours, which is beneficial to the simultaneous augmentation of PDT and CDT. Most importantly, the catalytic activity of CeO 2 was greatly improved by hyperthermia. Consequently, a significantly enhanced therapeutic efficiency was obtained by the above multiple synergistic effects. This work provides a proof of concept for amplified tumour therapy by synchronously self-supplying oxygen, consuming GSH, and enhancing catalytic activity.

All-In-One Self-Floating Wood-Based Solar-Thermal Evaporators for Simultaneous Solar Steam Generation and Catalytic Degradation

Tingting Zhang,Jin Qu,Jing Wu,Fan-Zhen Jiao,Changjun Li,Fu-Lin Gao,Ji Liu,Zhong-Zhen Yu,Xiaofeng Li

Solar-driven steam generation has emerged as a sustainable technology for addressing freshwater scarcity. However, significant challenges still exist in developing high-performance, multifunctional evaporators that are adept at both efficiently evaporating water and degrading pollutants, primarily because of the trade-offs among functional designs. Here, a self-floating solar evaporator is reported by functionalizing balsa wood with solar-thermal conversion material carbon nanotubes and catalytic manganese dioxide (MnO 2 ) nanoflowers for simultaneous solar evaporation and pollutant degradation. MnO 2 nanoflowers are rich in oxygen vacancies that can effectively activate peroxymonosulfate to generate reactive oxygen species for efficient organic pollutant degradation. A distinctive non-wetted porous interior structure and a precisely targeted water pathway are spontaneously established in the multifunctional evaporator, ensuring fast water supply, thermal insulation, efficient mass transfer, and high buoyancy. The resulting evaporators successfully combine an impressive evaporation rate of 2.74 kg m −2 h −1 , a high pollutant degradation efficiency (98.3% for 100 mg L −1 tetracycline and 97.4% for 200 mg L −1 Methyl orange), and stable self-floating and self-standing capabilities that ensure long-term operation stability even in complex real-world environments. This work provides an approach to design multifunctional solar evaporators, ensuring strong alignment with practical requirements while expanding their potential application scenarios.
