Transition metal phosphorus trichalcogenides (MPX 3 ), as a group of layered van der Waals materials with wide tunable bandgaps, high carrier mobility and good light absorption, are potential candidates for the preparation of high-performance broad-spectrum photoelectrochemical photodetectors (PEC PDs). MnPSe 3 , a p-type semiconducting material in the MPX 3 family, was exfoliated into nanosheets using liquid-phase exfoliation, and then applied in the PEC PDs. The MnPSe 3 -based PEC PDs were thoroughly investigated in a three-electrode system and demonstrated self-powered photoelectric performance across a broad spectral range of 400–800 nm. Specifically, under 400 nm illumination, the photodetector showed the optimal performance with a photocurrent density of 9.72 μA/cm 2 , responsivity of 85.55 μA/W, response times of 10/15 ms and fine cyclic stability under the biased condition. In addition, effects of different stripping agents, bias voltages, wavelengths and optical powers on the device performance were compared. These findings suggest that MnPSe 3 is a highly promising material in applications of high-performance self-powered PEC PDs.

Layered van der Waals magnetic materials exhibiting half-metallicity
represent promising platforms for spintronic applications. The transition-metal
phosphorus trichalcogenide MnPSe 3 has been theoretically
predicted to host an intrinsic ferromagnetic half-metallic state in
its monolayer under sufficient carrier doping. However, realizing
experimentally accessible half-metallicity in this system poses a
great challenge, as the controversy over the magnetic state of organic-ion-intercalated
MnPSe 3 crystals, which are commonly regarded as doped monolayers,
remains unresolved. Here, we resolve this controversy by identifying
a canted antiferromagnetic ground state in pyrrolidinium-intercalated
MnPSe 3 , which originates from the combined effects of competition
between direct Mn–Mn antiferromagnetic exchange and Mn–Se–Mn
ferromagnetic superexchange, as well as enhanced single-ion anisotropy.
X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray absorption near-edge structure
reveal multiple charge transfer pathways that lead to frustrated charge
redistribution, diminishing the enhancement of ferromagnetic superexchange
and yielding balanced competing interactions. First-principles calculations
further validate that this canted antiferromagnetic state is an intermediate
phase during the doping-driven antiferromagnetic-to-ferromagnetic
transition. Our work not only clarifies the longstanding magnetic
state controversy but also advances mechanistic understanding of charge
transfer in this system, paving the way for the rational design of
half-metallic van der Waals magnets toward practical spintronic devices.

The call for green economy has accelerated the research development of energy-saving optoelectronic devices. The choice of photoelectric material and the design of device configuration are crucial for achieving high device performances. In this study, we investigated the photoelectric response behaviors of van der Waals (vdW) heterostructure photodetectors by employing a type-II MnPSe 3 /MoS 2 heterojunction for charge carrier transport. Two types of device architectures were designed, one has a vertically stacked heterostructure with the photogenerated carriers transferring in an out-of-plane direction in the overlapped area of both materials; the other utilized the photogating effect using the top MoS 2 as the photogate for the carrier distribution modulation and MnPSe 3 at the bottom as the carrier transport channel. Both PDs demonstrated a broadband photoelectric response in the range of 254-1020 nm under the biased condition. Besides, the former device demonstrated a distinct self-powered behavior with the spectral detection range spanning from 365 nm to 635 nm, which was ascribed to higher charge carrier separation efficiency by the built-in electric field of the MnPSe 3 /MoS 2 heterojunction and the asymmetric barrier heights between two metal-semiconductor interfaces. This study reveals the possibility for harnessing the MnPSe 3 /MoS 2 hybrid vdW in low-power consuming optoelectronic devices and its application potential in broadband photoelectric detection.

The simultaneous inhibition of tumor recurrence and promotion of wound healing are critical for patients undergoing melanoma surgery. However, the development of an effective yet straightforward platform that meets the comprehensive therapeutic requirements of clinical melanoma postoperative care still remains a significant challenge. Herein, a 2D semiconductive MnPSe 3 nanosheets (MPS NSs)-engineered sodium alginate (SA) hydrogel dressing (SA-MPS) is developed. The MPS NSs, a member of the ternary transition metal phosphorous chalcogenides (TMPCs), are successfully prepared through an ultrasonic-assisted liquid phase exfoliation approach from bulk MnPSe 3 . These nanosheets exhibit the integrative functions of sonosensitizers, Fenton-like catalysts, glutathione (GSH) scavengers, and phosphorus (P)/selenium (Se)-containing nutrients. In vitro and in vivo evaluations demonstrate that the SA-MPS hydrogel dressing possesses excellent biocompatibility and is effective for combined sonodynamic/chemodynamic therapy (SDT/CDT) of tumors, with amplified reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. Additionally, it promotes skin regeneration in postoperative wounds by supplying bioactive P/Se elements. Hence, such a multifunctional SA-MPS hydrogel dressing without complex integration offers great potential for suppressing postoperative melanoma recurrence while facilitating wound healing, making it a promising candidate for melanoma postoperative care.
