Construction of Mo/Mo2C@C modified ZnIn2S4 Schottky junctions for efficient photo-thermal assisted hydrogen evolution

Xiu-Qing Qiao,Wenxuan Chen,Chen Li,Zizhao Wang,Dongfang Hou,Bojing Sun,Dong-Sheng Li

Photocatalytic water splitting on noble metal-free photocatalysts for H 2 generation is a promising but challenging approach to realize solar-to-chemical energy conversion. In this study, Mo/Mo 2 C nanoparticles anchored carbon layer (Mo/Mo 2 C@C) was obtained by a one-step in-situ phase transition approach and developed for the first time as a photothermal cocatalyst to enhance the activity of ZnIn 2 S 4 photocatalyst. Mo/Mo 2 C@C nanosheet exhibits strong absorption in the full spectrum region and excellent photo-thermal conversion ability, which generates heat to improve the reaction temperature and accelerate the reaction kinetics. Moreover, metallic Mo/Mo 2 C@C couples with ZnIn 2 S 4 to form ZnIn 2 S 4 –Mo/Mo 2 C@C Schottky junction (denoted as ZMM), which prevents the electrons back transfer and restrains the charge recombination. In addition, conductive carbon with strong interfacial interaction serves as a fast charge transport bridge. Consequently, the optimized ZMM-0.2 junction exhibits an H 2 evolution rate of 1031.07 μmol g −1  h −1 , which is 41 and 4.3 times higher than bare ZnIn 2 S 4 and ZnIn 2 S 4 –Mo 2 C, respectively. By designing novel photothermal cocatalysts, our work will provide a new guidance for designing efficient photocatalysts.

Mo/Mo2C encapsulated in nitrogen-doped carbon nanofibers as efficiently integrated heterojunction electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction in wide pH range

Meixuan Li,Huiyuan Wang,Yun Zhu,Di Tian,Ce Wang,Xiaofeng Lu

It is extremely necessary to develop high-performance noble-metal-free hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts applied over the whole pH values to replace expensive Pt-based catalysts. Herein, a typical metal-semiconductor heterostructure with metallic Mo and Mo 2 C nanoparticles encapsulated in nitrogen-doped carbon nanofibers (N-CNFs) is fabricated via the pyrolysis of electrospun polyacrylonitrile (PAN)/cellulose acetate (CA)/bis(acetylacetonato)dioxomolybdenum (MoO 2 (acac) 2 ) nanofibers . The unique porous and channel-rich structure of Mo/Mo 2 C/N-CNFs can be manipulated by varying the mass ratio of polyacrylonitrile and cellulose acetate , leading to the exposure of abundant active centers and the acceleration of rapid mass transport. In addition, the synergetic effect among metal and semiconductor as well as the excellent conductivity of the N-CNFs result in excellent HER activity and stability over a wide pH range. To achieve the current density of 10 mA cm − 2 , the optimized Mo/Mo 2 C/N-CNFs exhibit overpotentials of 175, 162 and 294 mV in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 , 1 M KOH and 0.1 M phosphate buffer solution (PBS), respectively. This work provides a feasible approach to synthesize high-performance and economical hydrogen evolution electrocatalysts at all pH values for renewable energy-related applications.

Engineering Mo/Mo2C/MoC hetero-interfaces for enhanced electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction

Ying Liu,Xiaorong Zhu,Qinghua Zhang,Tang Tang,Yun Zhang,Lin Gu,Yafei Li,Jianchun Bao,Zhihui Dai,Jin-Song Hu

The development of efficient and cost-effective electrocatalysts is essential for the electrochemical reduction of N2 to produce NH3 under ambient conditions. Herein, various well-dispersed Mo-based nanoparticles are selectively synthesized to reveal the influences of the compositions and hetero-interfaces on the performance for the N2 reduction reaction (NRR). Systematic experiments discovered that compared with single-component Mo2C or Mo nanoparticles, the heterostructured binary MoC/Mo2C and ternary Mo/MoC/Mo2C nanoparticles exhibit significantly enhanced NRR performance by creating abundant hetero-interfaces. Moreover, theoretical calculations reveal that the integration of metallic Mo with MoC/Mo2C appreciably reduces the energy demand for NH3 desorption, contributing to the enhanced NRR process. As a result, a remarkable NH3 yield rate of up to 20.4 μg h−1 mg−1 and a FE up to 18.9% can be achieved. These findings suggest that engineering crystalline phases and hetero-interfaces represents a new avenue for advancing the electrocatalytic performance of a NRR catalyst.

Biomass-derived nitrogen-doped carbon supported Mo/Mo2C heterojunctions with interfacial electronic-activated carbon matrix for efficient hydrogen evolution

Junjie Gong,Beibei Xiao,Zhenzhen Wang,Pengyue Wang,Yuhang Liu,Shijie Shen,Wenwu Zhong

Molybdenum carbide has emerged as a promising candidate for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) due to its Pt-like electronic properties and stability. However, it suffers from strong hydrogen adsorption and particle aggregation, limiting its catalytic efficiency. Herein, we present a facile one-step pyrolysis strategy using biomass-derived chitosan as a dual-functional carbon/nitrogen source to synthesize nitrogen-doped carbon-supported Mo/Mo 2 C heterojunctions. The chitosan-derived porous carbon matrix prevents nanoparticle agglomeration, while nitrogen doping enhances conductivity. Remarkably, theoretical and experimental analyses reveal that the active sites are not the heterojunctions themselves but the adjacent carbon matrix activated by interfacial electronic effects, achieving near-optimal hydrogen adsorption free energy (ΔG H* = 0.01 eV). The optimized catalyst demonstrates outstanding HER performance, requiring only 97.7 mV overpotential to deliver 10 mA cm - ² in alkaline media. This work provides a cost-effective synthesis method alongside novel design principles for high-performance non-precious metal HER catalysts.
