Photopatterned salecan composite hydrogel reinforced with α-Mo2C nanoparticles for cell adhesion

Xinyu Hu,Yongmei Wang,Liangliang Zhang,Man Xu,Jianfa Zhang,Wei Dong

Salecan, a water-soluble extracellular β-glucan, has emerged as a promising candidate for preparing hydrogel biomaterials recently. Herein, photo cross linked composite hydrogels, composed by salecan/poly ( N-tert -butylacrylamide-co-acrylamide) network andα-Mo 2 C nanoparticles were prepared by ultraviolet (UV) light, using Irgacue 2959 as photo initiator. The XRD and EDX analysis illustrated the presence of embeddedα-Mo 2 C nanoparticles throughout the hydrogel matrix. Compression tests and thermal analysis revealed that the incorporation of α-Mo 2 C nanoparticles enhanced mechanical strength and thermal stability due to the structural reinforcement of the composite hydrogels. Moreover, the change of salecan content provided a mean to tailor both the swelling property and morphology of the composite hydrogels. Encapsulation of L929 and 3T3-L1 cells and the following viability test showed the excellent cell-compatibility of these hydrogels. Taken together, these studies support the use of photo crosslinked composite hydrogels as tunable biomaterials for cell adhesion.

Decorating ketjen black with ultra-small Mo2C nanoparticles to enhance polysulfides chemisorption and redox kinetics for lithium-sulfur batteries

Nan Jiang,Guangyu Jiang,Dechao Niu,Jiayi Mao,Meiwan Chen,Kaiyuan Li,Yongsheng Li

The low sulfur utilization and fast capacity fading resulting from the sluggish redox reaction and abominable polysulfides shuttle greatly hinder the practical applications of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. Herein, we develop a facile “ in-situ growth” method to decorate ultra-small Mo 2 C nanoparticles (US-Mo 2 C) on the surface of Ketjen Black (KB) to functionalize the commercial polypropylene (PP) separators, which can accelerate the redox kinetics of lithium polysulfides conversion and effectively increase the utilization of sulfur for Li-S batteries. Importantly, the US-Mo 2 C nanoparticles have abundant sites for chemical adsorption towards polysulfides and the conductive carbon networks of KB have cross-linked pore channels, which can promote electron transport and provide physical barrier and volume expansion space for polysulfides. Due to the combined effects of the US-Mo 2 C and KB, Li-S cells employing the multifunctional PP separators modified with KB/US-Mo 2 C composite (KB/US-Mo 2 C@PP) exhibit a high specific capacity (1212.8 mAh g −1 at 0.2 C), and maintain a reversible capacity of 1053.3 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles. More importantly, the KB/US-Mo 2 C@PP cells with higher sulfur mass loading of 4.9 mg cm −2 have superb areal capacity of 2.3 mAh cm −2 . This work offers a novel and promising perspective for high-performance Li-S batteries from both the shuttle effect and the complex polysulfides conversion.

Ultrasmall Mo2C Nanoparticle-Decorated Carbon Polyhedrons for Enhanced Microwave Absorption

Yahui Wang,Chaolong Li,Xijiang Han,Dawei Liu,Honghong Zhao,Zhennan Li,Ping Xu,Yunchen Du

Carbides/carbon composites are becoming a new kind of microwave absorption (MA) materials with great potential in chemical stability and light weight, as well as enhanced performance. Herein, we design a series of Mo2C/C composites through a simple pyrolysis of Mo-substituted ZIF-8 (Mo/ZIF-8). It is found that the transformation of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks into carbon polyhedrons is accompanied by the in situ formation of ultrasmall Mo2C nanoparticles (Mo2C NPs) less than 5.0 nm. The molar ratio of 2-methylimidazole to molybdic acid (MIM/Mo) presents a significant effect on the relative content of Mo2C NPs but not on their average size. The uniform distribution of Mo2C NPs in carbon polyhedrons overcomes the poor chemical homogeneity in conventional carbides/carbon composites. More importantly, Mo2C NPs modulate the dielectric loss of these composites effectively. On one hand, they moderately weaken the contribution from conductivity loss and dipole orientation polarization; on the other hand, they create considerable interfacial polarization. As a result, these Mo2C/C composites display much better impedance matching than individual carbon polyhedrons. When the MIM/Mo ratio reaches 6.0, the optimized composite, S-Mo2C/C-6.0, displays good MA performance in the frequency range of 2.0–18.0 GHz, including powerful reflection loss and broad qualified bandwidth. Its performance is actually superior to those conventional carbides/carbon composites in previous studies, demonstrating that Mo2C/C composite from this novel strategy may be a promising candidate for high-performance MA materials in the future.

Chip-Inspired Design of High-Performance Lithium–Sulfur Batteries by Integrating Monodisperse Sulfur Nanoreactors on Graphene

Yudong Lan,Yiwen Wang,Yu Wang,Guiling Lu,Ling Liu,Tao Tang,Ming Li,Yong Cheng,Jianrong Xiao,Xinyu Li

For practical application of lithium–sulfur batteries (LSBs), designing devices with an overall optimal structure instead of modifying electrode materials is significant. Herein, we report a chip-inspired design of a vertically integrated structure as an LSB cathode by implanting Mo2C nanoparticles and nanosulfur into the reduced graphene oxide (rGO) matrix. This configuration enabled the synthesis of isolated sulfur nanoreactors (S-NRs) integrated in a tandem array on the rGO, generating chip-like integrated LSBs. The spatial confinement/protection and concentration gradient of the S-NRs effectively avoided the dissolution, diffusion, and loss of polysulfides, thereby enhancing the sulfur utilization and redox reaction kinetics. Additionally, the adaptive storage energy can be improved by utilizing the tandem, isolation, and synergistic multiplicative effect among the nanoreactor units. As a result, the integrated LSB cathode obtained excellent electrochemical performances with an initial capacity of 1392 mAh g–1 at 0.1C, a low capacity decay rate of 0.017% per cycle during 1500 cycles of operation at 0.5C, and a superior rate performance. This work provides a rational design idea and method of further advancing the precise preparation of high-performance energy storage devices.

Mo2C Electrocatalysts for Kinetically Boosting Polysulfide Conversion in Quasi-Solid-State Lithium–Sulfur Batteries

Yu-Jiao Zhang,Zhen-Yu Xing,Wen-Peng Wang,Ning Gao,Jie Zhao,Wen-Ce Yue,Xue Li,Yi-Bo Gao,Sen Xin,Bao Li,Bao Wang

Lithium–sulfur batteries (LSBs) suffer from sluggish reaction kinetics of sulfur-containing species and loss of soluble polysulfides (PSs) during cycling, especially in the case of liquid electrolytes. Here, we improve the kinetics of sulfur species by decorating Mo2C nanoparticles on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as the host for sulfur active mass. In addition, by use of gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) derived from in situ polymerization of 1,3-dioxolane (DOL) to mitigate the diffusion of PSs and improve the stability of Li stripping/plating. As a result, the sulfur cathodes are endowed with enhanced initial specific capacity and suppressed dissolution of sulfur species. The cells with CNT/Mo2C/S cathodes and GPE exhibit excellent electrochemical performance. The anodes cycled with GPE show remarkably enhanced lithium plating-stripping behavior. Benefitting from the synergistic effect, LSBs with higher energy density and improved durability are obtained, demonstrating a new approach for developing high-performance quasi-solid-state Li metal batteries.

Ni activated Mo2C nanoparticles supported on stereotaxically-constructed graphene for efficient overall water splitting

Yang Qi Huang,Tao Zhou,Asad Ali,Pei Kang Shen

Exploring cost-effective, high-efficiency and stable electrocatalysts for overall water splitting is greatly desirable and challenging for sustainable energy. Herein, a novel designed Ni activated molybdenum carbide nanoparticle loaded on stereotaxically-constructed graphene (SCG) using two steps facile strategy (hydrothermal and carbonization) as a bifunctional electrocatalyst for overall water splitting. The optimized Ni/Mo 2 C(1:20)-SCG composites exhibit excellent performance with a low overpotential of 150 mV and 330 mV for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), respectively to obtain a current density of 10 mA cm −2 in 1.0 M KOH solution. In addition, when the optimized Ni/Mo 2 C(1:20)-SCG composite is used as a bifunctional electrode for overall water splitting, the electrochemical cell required a low cell voltage of 1.68 V at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 and long-term stability of 24 h. More significantly, the synergetic effects between Ni-activated Mo 2 C nanoparticles and SCG are regarded as a significant contributor to accelerate charge transfer and promote electrocatalytic performance in hybrid electrocatalysts. Our works introduce a novel approach to design advanced bifunctional electrodes for overall water splitting.
