Carbon dioxide adsorption of two-dimensional Mo2C MXene

Sen Jin,Yitong Guo,Junkai Wang,Libo Wang,Qianku Hu,Aiguo Zhou

In this paper, the CO 2 adsorption behaviors of Mo 2 C MXene were explored for the first time. Two-dimensional (2D) Mo 2 C MXene samples were prepared by hydrothermal etching in four different solutions (LiF, NaF, KF or NH 4 F with HCl). The sample made by LiF + HCl etching exhibited the highest capacity of 3.66 mmol g −1 , which is consistent with theoretical calculation that Mo 2 CO 2 decorated by Li has stronger interaction with CO 2 than those of Na and K. Although Mo 2 C MXene has low specific surface area (SSA, 4.9–8.9 m 2  g −1 ) as compared with those of Ti 3 C 2 (21 m 2  g −1 ) and V 2 C (9 m 2  g −1 ) MXenes, Mo 2 C MXene possesses better performance on CO 2 capture than Ti 3 C 2 (1.33 mmol g −1 ) and V 2 C (0.52 mmol g −1 ) MXenes at 4 MPa. This is because the CO 2 adsorption of Mo 2 C MXene is mainly physical absorption formed by the capillary condensation in mixed pores (micropores and mesopores) and slitlike pores between two Mo 2 C MXene flakes. Besides, the CO 2 adsorption on the surface of Mo 2 C MXene with functional groups (O or F) shows a current of chemisorption feature. This work indicates that Mo 2 C MXene is a promising candidate for CO 2 capture and storage material.

Improve thermoelectric performance of Bi2Te3 by incorporation of Mo2C MXene with N-type conductivity

Guo Yitong,Du Jingyang,Hu Meihua,Wei Bin,Su Taichao,Zhou Aiguo

In this paper, the thermoelectric (TE) performance of Bi 2 Te 3 was improved by the incorporation of Mo 2 C MXene, which is a novel two-dimensional material with moderate TE performance. The TE properties of Mo 2 C MXene were characterized from bulk samples bonded with 5 wt% Al sintered by spark plasma sintering (SPS) at 623 K for 6 min. Due to the very weak TE performance of Al, the performance of Mo 2 C MXene/Al composite reflects that of Mo 2 C MXene. It is an N-type conductor with the Seebeck coefficient of − 9.25 µV/K at 600 K. This is the first report to characterize the TE performance of Mo 2 C MXene bulk samples. Thereafter, Bi 2 Te 3 /Mo 2 C MXene composite powders were prepared from Mo 2 C MXene powers and precursors of Bi 2 Te 3 by hydrothermal method at 453 K for 24 h. The bulk samples of Bi 2 Te 3 incorporated with Mo 2 C MXene was obtained by SPS at 523 K for 7 min. The composites are N-type conductors. The electrical conductivity was remarkably increased with the content of Mo 2 C MXene, while the thermal conductivity slightly decreased. The sample with 5 vol% Mo 2 C MXene showed the optimal thermoelectric properties, and its ZT value was 0.26 at 473 K. At 450 K, the ZT value (~ 0.25) of that sample was 78.6% higher than that of Bi 2 Te 3 (~ 0.14). This is the first report on regulating TE performance by the incorporation of Mo 2 C MXene, a 2D material with intrinsic TE performance.

Mo2C MXene Nanosheets Made in Different Etching Solutions as Co-catalysts for Hydrogen Production

Sen Jin,Huijuan Jing,Libo Wang,Qianku Hu,Aiguo Zhou

Mo2C MXene is a two-dimensional material, which can be applied as a co-catalyst to significantly enhance the photocatalytic performance of CdS for H2 production. To understand the effect of the synthesis process of Mo2C MXene nanosheets on the catalytic performance, in this paper, Mo2C MXene was made from Mo2Ga2C by hydrothermal etching in different etchants. Diverse cations (Li+, Na+, K+, or NH4+) in etchants resided on the surface of Mo2C MXene nanosheets. Then, the samples were used to construct CdS/Mo2C-MXene composites for photocatalytic H2 evolution. Among them, Mo2C MXene with Li+ shows the best photocatalytic H2 production rate of 22,048 μmol g–1 h–1 under visible light. The remarkable performance arises from the modification at the nanoscale of Mo2C MXene with Li+, thereby resulting in better photoabsorption behavior, high separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers, and fast charge transfer at the heterointerface. Moreover, the energy band structures explain that the changes of band gap and the position of the conductive band in the photocatalyst tuned by cations are also key to affect photocatalytic activities.

Enhancing effect of Mo2C MXene and Ru nanoparticles for efficient hydrogen production from ammonia borane

Yang Shi,Pei Liu,Zhenluo Yuan,Xiaojiao Wang,Qiuming Peng,Shumin Han,Yanping Fan,Baozhong Liu

The exploitation of high-performance catalysts is essential for practical application of hydrogen production technology by ammonia borane (AB) hydrolysis. In this work, we reported an uncomplicated approach to exploit high-performance catalysts for hydrogen production from AB hydrolysis. Using the reducibility of AB, the Ru 0 /Mo 2 C MXene catalyst was synthesized using Mo 2 C MXene as carrier to hydrogen production from AB hydrolysis. The combination of Mo 2 C MXene and Ru nanoparticles exhibited remarkable catalytic performance. The TOF value was 868.6 min −1 and the hydrogen production rate reached as high as 210,464 mL min −1 g Ru −1  at 298 K. Moreover, the Ru 0 /Mo 2 C MXene catalyst showed good durability and continuously produce hydrogen for more than 4 h with a turnover number (TON) of 41293. Characterization analysis revealed that Mo 2 C MXene regulated the coordination environment of Ru, forming electron-rich Mo 2 C MXene and electron-deficient Ru sites. And excellent catalytic activity is benefiting from the enhanced interaction between Mo 2 C MXene and Ru nanoparticles, promoting the effective activation and dissociation of the reactants, which resulted in the improvement of the performance of AB hydrolysis. This work offers an innovative approach to synthesize efficient AB hydrolysis catalysts for hydrogen production.

Mo2C-MXene/CdS Heterostructures as Visible-Light Photocatalysts with an Ultrahigh Hydrogen Production Rate

Sen Jin,Zuhao Shi,Huijuan Jing,Libo Wang,Qianku Hu,Deliang Chen,Neng Li,Aiguo Zhou

Here, we report a visible-light photocatalyst (Mo2C-MXene/CdS) with H2 production rate higher than that of state-of-the-art catalysts based on noble metals or other MXenes. The photocatalyst was constructed from Mo2C MXene, Cd(NO3)2·4H2O, and thiourea with ethylenediamine, which has an acanthosphere structure with Mo2C two-dimensional (2D) sheets covered by wurtzite CdS nanocrystals. From theoretical calculation, Mo sites in the Mo2C-MXene/CdS(110) heterostructure provide an efficient reaction site for the hydrogen evolution reaction (ΔGH* = −0.18 eV). The electronic structures demonstrate that this heterostructure has favorable band gap and band edge position for water splitting. In experimental measurements, the photocatalyst shows a H2 production rate of 17 964 μmol g–1 h–1. The H2 production is ca. 20% higher than the previously reported value of Ti3C2 MXene catalysts and ca. 11% higher than that of noble-metal catalysts. Therefore, Mo2C-MXene/CdS heterostructure is a promising catalyst with ultrahigh performance to replace noble-metal catalysts.

Construction and performance of CdS/MoO2@Mo2C-MXene photocatalyst for H2 production

Jin Sen,Jing Huijuan,Wang Libo,Hu Qianku,Zhou Aiguo

Nowadays, photocatalytic technologies are regarded as promising strategies to solve energy problems, and various photocatalysts have been synthesized and explored. In this paper, a novel CdS/MoO 2 @Mo 2 C-MXene photocatalyst for H 2 production was constructed by a two-step hydrothermal method, where MoO 2 @Mo 2 C-MXene acted as a binary co-catalyst. In the first hydrothermal step, MoO 2 crystals with an egged shape grew on the surface of two-dimensional (2D) Mo 2 C MXene via an oxidation process in HCl aqueous solution. In the second hydrothermal step, CdS nanorods were uniformly assembled on the surface of MoO 2 @Mo 2 C-MXene in ethylenediamine with an inorganic cadmium source and organic sulfur source. The CdS/MoO 2 @Mo 2 C-MXene composite with MoO 2 @Mo 2 C-MXene of 5 wt% exhibits an ultrahigh visible-light photocatalytic H 2 production activity of 22,672 µmol/(g·h), which is ∼21% higher than that of CdS/Mo 2 C-MXene. In the CdS/MoO 2 @Mo 2 C-MXene composite, the MoO 2 with metallic nature separates CdS and Mo 2 C MXene, which acts as an electron-transport bridge between CdS and Mo 2 C MXene to accelerate the photoinduced electron transferring. Moreover, the energy band structure of CdS was changed by MoO 2 @Mo 2 C-MXene to suppress the recombination of photogenerated carriers. This novel compound delivers upgraded photocatalytic H 2 evolution performance and a new pathway of preparing the low-cost photocatalyst to solve energy problems in the future.

Effective catalytic effects of Mo2C MXene on the hydrogen storage in magnesium hydride

Xiaojiao Wang,Zhenluo Yuan,Yang Shi,Shangsheng Li,Guofa Mi,Qiuming Peng,Shumin Han,Yanping Fan,Baozhong Liu

Magnesium hydride (MgH 2 ) has received widespread attention because of its high hydrogen capacity and low cost, but the sluggish kinetics limited its practical application. Herein, the two-dimensional Mo 2 C MXene was constructed to motivate the efficient hydrogen storage in MgH 2 for the first time. After doping 10 wt% Mo 2 C MXene, the starting dehydriding temperature was lowered to 225 °C, presenting a 117 °C reduction compared with that of as-received MgH 2 . The 10 wt% Mo 2 C-containing MgH 2 sample could rapidly release 6.7 wt% H 2 in 13 min at 300 °C, and the product after hydrogen release could absorb 6.0 wt% H 2 in 12 min at 200 °C, showing superior hydriding and dehydriding kinetics. Moreover, the activation energy ( E a ) of MgH 2 –10 wt% Mo 2 C (107.58 ± 1.57 kJ/mol) was obviously lower than that of pure MgH 2 (130.45 ± 1.97 kJ/mol), and the reduced activation energy explained the reduced dehydrogenation temperature and enhanced kinetics. Microstructure characterization revealed that Mo-species (Mo 0 and Mo 2+ ) formed during ball milling served as active species accelerated the hydriding/dehydriding reactions, and the uniformly distributed active species and the interaction between Mo and O jointly promoted the hydrogen storage properties of MgH 2 .

Nitrogen doping engineering of Ru nanoparticles/Mo2C MXene for efficient hydrogen production via NH3BH3 hydrolysis

Zhenluo Yuan,Fei Ya,Yang Shi,Shuyan Guan,Pingping Wang,Pei Liu,Shiqian Zhao,Qiuming Peng,Yanping Fan,Baozhong Liu

Ru/N-Mo 2 C MXene was assembled by hydrothermal and impregnation reduction process. • The introduction of Ru/N-Mo 2 C MXene accelerates the hydrolysis rate of ammonia borane. • Ru/N-Mo 2 C MXene exhibits a high TOF value of 1092 mol H2 ∙mol Ru −1 ∙min −1 . • Dual active sites of Ru and N-Mo 2 C MXene promotes the hydrogen production for NH 3 BH 3 . Ammonia borane (NH 3 BH 3 , AB) is an ideal hydrogen storage medium, but its intrinsic physicochemical properties require efficient catalysts for rapid hydrolytic dehydrogenation at room temperature. Herein, the Ru nanoparticles anchored nitrogen-doped Mo 2 C MXene (Ru/N-Mo 2 C MXene) catalyst was successfully synthesized via a hydrothermal method combined with an impregnation-reduction strategy, using urea as the nitrogen source. When the mass ratio of Mo 2 C MXene to urea was 1:6, the Ru/N-Mo 2 C MXene catalyst exhibited optimal performance. At 298 K, the turnover frequency value of Ru/N-Mo 2 C MXene was 1092 mol H2 ∙mol Ru −1 ∙min −1 , with an activation energy of 51.74 kJ∙mol −1 , and the catalytic activity remained 86.2% after five cycles. Mechanism analysis indicates that the superior hydrogen production performance of AB is attributed to both the generation of 1.59 nm Ru nanoparticles and the modulated local electronic structure induced by N doping originating from Ru/N-Mo 2 C MXene. These features facilitate the generation of dual active sites (electron-rich Ru and electron-deficient N-Mo 2 C MXene), which efficiently promote the cleavage of B H in AB and O H in H 2 O, thereby significantly boosting the catalytic activity of Ru/N-Mo 2 C MXene for AB hydrogen production. This work establishes a feasible strategy for designing high-efficiency catalysts for ammonia borane hydrolysis.
