Synergistic effect of Mo2N and Pt for promoted selective hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde over Pt–Mo2N/SBA-15

Dong Wang,Yujun Zhu,Chungui Tian,Lei Wang,Wei Zhou,Yongli Dong,Qing Han,Yunfei Liu,Fulong Yuan,Honggang Fu

The introduction of a suitable co-catalyst is a promising way to improve the catalytic efficiency of Pt catalysts. Herein, SBA-15 modified with well-dispersed Mo2N nanoparticles (NPs) is synthesized by anchoring phosphomolybdic acid (HPM) on aminated SBA-15 (SBA-15-NH2) primarily, followed by nitridation treatment under NH3. After loading of Pt, the Pt–Mo2N/SBA-15 catalyst with close-contact Pt and Mo2N NPs can be formed. The intensive interaction of Pt and Mo2N benefited from the close contact is verified by XRD and XPS tests. As a result, the ternary Pt–Mo2N/SBA-15 catalysts have shown superior performance to Pt/SBA-15 catalysts for the selective hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde to cinnamyl alcohol. The TOF over the 1 wt% Pt–Mo2N/SBA-15 catalyst is close to that over the 3 wt% Pt/SBA-15 catalyst, but its selectivity to cinnamyl alcohol (COL) is 2.5 times that of 3 wt% Pt/SBA-15. The promoted activity of Pt–Mo2N/SBA-15 is mainly attributed to the synergistic effect of Pt and Mo2N NPs, which can cause the full development of the catalytic ability of Pt, thus reducing the Pt usage, through increasing the dispersion of Pt NPs and the fraction of Pt0 species in the catalyst.

Mo2N decorated hierarchical ZnIn2S4 with sulfur-rich vacancy photocatalyst for efficient photocatalytic hydrogen production

Lian Yi,François Nkinahamira,Hongyi Jiang,Jingyuan Huang,Yueyong Ma,Rongshu Zhu

The development of photocatalyst is essential for achieving efficient photocatalytic water splitting for hydrogen production . Therefore, a novel Mo 2 N (MN) decorated ZnIn 2 S 4 (ZIS) with sulfur-rich vacancy (Sv-ZIS) photocatalyst was rationally constructed via a facile calcining-hydrothermal method for efficient photocatalytic H 2 production. The optimized photocatalyst exhibits an outstanding photocatalytic H 2 production rate of 10.28 mmol·g −1 ·h −1 , 7.52 and 3.11 times higher than that of bare ZIS and S V -ZnIn 2 S 4 (S V -ZIS), respectively. The characterizations reveal that the presence of MN and S-vacancies improves the light absorption capacity, and facilitates the separation and migration of photogenerated carriers. Density functional theory calculations (DFT) have confirmed that MN can optimize ΔG H* to approach 0, which is favorable for photocatalytic hydrogen production . Therefore, the combined effect of MN and S-vacancies facilitates efficient photocatalytic H 2 production of S V -ZIS/MN.

Ultra-small Mo2N on SBA-15 as a highly efficient promoter of low-loading Pd for catalytic hydrogenation

Xusheng Cheng,Dongxu Wang,Jiancong Liu,Xin Kang,Haijing Yan,Aiping Wu,Ying Gu,Chungui Tian,Honggang Fu

Decreasing Pd usage whilst maintaining a superior performance is promising, but remains a challenge in the catalytic field. Herein, we have demonstrated the highly efficient promotion of Mo2N with a reduced amount of Pd for the liquid-phase hydrogenation reaction. The Mo2N (2–3 nm) was uniformly anchored onto mesoporous SBA-15 by using PMo12 as the Mo source. The small size and good dispersion of Mo2N is favourable for allowing their effective contact with post-loading Pd. This good contact is conducive to developing a synergistic catalyst, which was verified by studying the liquid-phase hydrogenation of p-nitrophenol (PNP) to p-aminophenol (PAP) with NaBH4 as the H source. The conversion ability of PNP to PAP on 1 wt% Pd–Mo2N/SBA-15 was vastly superior to 1 wt% Pd/SBA-15 and even better than 20 wt% Pd/SBA-15. The low-Pd, highly efficient catalysis is ascribed to the transfer of the electrons from Mo2N to Pd for the easy activation of H. The synergy can be affected by the type of support used. SBA-15 is superior to SiO2 and the other supports, which could be related to the large surface area and the plentiful number of pores on SBA-15, which is favourable to the dispersion of Pd and Mo2N, and the transfer/diffusion of the reactants. In particular, a highly efficient catalyst can be achieved at an even more reduced Pd loading (0.05 wt%). The current method describes the design of a highly efficient catalyst for the hydrogenation reaction using low amounts of noble metals.

Electrochemical aptasensor based on Mo2C/Mo2N and gold nanoparticles for determination of chlorpyrifos

Lin Zhenfeng,Liu Xin,Li Yangzi,Li Changxiang,Yang Liu,Ma Keke,Zhang Zhenwei,Huang Huayu

Two-dimensional Mo 2 C/Mo 2 N composites were synthesized by high temperature ball milling and used as support materials for fabricating a chlorpyrifos (CPF) aptasensor. Gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) were electrodeposited on the surface of a Mo 2 C/Mo 2 N-modified electrode to connect with the ferrocene (Fc) probe via Au–S bonds. The Fc probe can hybridize with the aptamer probe to form a double-stranded structure. The addition of CPF made the double strands melt and the Fc probe approached the surface of the electrode, thereby resulting in amplification of the electrochemical response. The current response of the aptasensor for detecting CPF in solutions linearly varied from 0 to 400 ng mL −1 (with a maximum at 0.98 V vs. Ag/AgCl). The Au NPs/Mo 2 C/Mo 2 N composites exhibited satisfactory electrochemical behavior due to their excellent electrical conductivity and large surface area. This ultrasensitive aptasensor showed a low limit of detection of 0.036 ng mL −1 . It was applied to determine CPF in real samples with acceptable recoveries from 94.7 to 116.7%, and the relative standard deviation was from 2.57 to 7.08%. Graphical abstract Schematic diagram of the manufacturing process of the aptasensor. Electrochemical aptasensor based on Mo 2 C/Mo 2 N/Au NP composites show excellent performance in detecting CPF.

In-Situ and controllable construction of Mo2N embedded Mo2C nanobelts as robust electrocatalyst for superior pH-universal hydrogen evolution reaction

Hao Song,Siguang Guo,Xuming Zhang,Yixuan Yang,Biao Gao,Yuancheng Pi,Chaoran Pi,Paul K. Chu,Kaifu Huo

The development of high active and cost-effective transition metal based catalysts as alternatives to Pt-based electrocatalysts for pH-universal hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is highly desirable. Herein, we proposed a novel strategy to construct Mo 2 N uniformly embedded Mo 2 C nanobelt arrays electrocatalyst on N doped carbon framework (Mo 2 N-Mo 2 C/NC NBAs) by nitridation of MoO x /C hybrid precursors and subsequent annealing. The effect of N content towards the composition ratio of Mo 2 N to Mo 2 C and the structural evolution were studied. The in-situ formed Mo 2 N reduces the sintering of Mo 2 C phase and creates amounts of compact Mo 2 N-Mo 2 C interfaces and mesopores. Because of these high active interfaces, mesopores structure and self-supported architecture, the resultant Mo 2 N-Mo 2 C/NC catalyst exhibits remarkable HER performance and durability over a wide pH range, as exemplified by a small overpotentials of 75, 93, and 114 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , and Tafel slopes of 43, 58, and 62 mV dec −1 in the alkaline, neutral and acidic media. The results reveal a new avenue to design highly efficient electrocatalysts with tailored hetero/microstructures, which could be extended to fabricate other high-performance electrocatalyst and electrode materials for electrochemical energy conversion.

Synthesis of ultrafine Mo2N particles supported on N doped carbon material for guaiacol hydrodeoxygenation

Chenglong Wen,Shuning Li,Peng Zhang,Mohong Lu,Jie Zhu,Mingshi Li,Chunshan Song

A series of Mo 2 N particles supported on nitrogen-doped carbon (Mo 2 N@NC) catalysts for guaiacol hydrodeoxygenation were synthesized in situ through a one-step method employing dopamine as C and N resources and ammonium molybdate as Mo resource, respectively. During synthesis, molybdate ions are adsorbed on dopamine because of a complexation between them; then dopamine/molybdate ions/TMB/F127 nanoemulsions are formed. After polymerization, growth, drying, and carbonization , Mo 2 N particles supported on nitrogen-doped carbon catalysts are obtained. Because of the interaction between Mo and N, Mo 2 N particles are anchored onto the support, preventing the aggregation of Mo 2 N during carbonization. As a result, ultrafine Mo 2 N particles with a size of 1.0–1.3 nm are highly dispersed on Mo 2 N@NC catalysts. The guaiacol hydrodeoxygenation for these Mo 2 N@NC catalysts was performed at 280–380 °C, a H 2 flow rate of 80 mL/min and different pressures and weight hourly space velocities. Among them, Mo 2 N@NC with a Mo 2 N loading of 40 % presents the highest guaiacol conversion (99.9 %) and aromatic hydrocarbon selectivity (80.2 %), which is also better than Mo 2 N/C with a Mo 2 N loading of 40 % prepared by the wet impregnation method.

Tunable Reduction Optimizing Mo2C/Mo2N Heterostructure Enabling Efficient pH-Universal Hydrogen Evolution

Chen Yonghui,Zhao Jiafu,Song Mingzhu,Luo Shaojuan,Xie Shaoqu,Yan Kai

The development of safe, low-cost and highly active non-precious metal electrocatalysts plays a vital role in efficient hydrogen production. Herein, Mo 2 C/Mo 2 N heterostructure was in-situ synthesized by a two-step method for excellent hydrogen evolution performance at a universal pH range. The results show that the optimized MoCN-750-2h only needs 86.5, 102.5 and 120.5 mV overpotentials to reach 10 mA·cm −2 in alkaline, acidic and neutral media, respectively. Not only that, MoCN-750-2h had a low Tafel slope (37.2 and 88.5 mV·dec −1 ) in alkaline and neutral media, implying that catalytic kinetic is close to the level of Pt/C. These results can be attributed to reasonable C and N content in MoCN-750-2 h, optimizing the electron cloud distribution of Mo 2 C/Mo 2 N heterostructure to boost hydrogen production. Graphical Abstract MoCN heterostructure was in-situ synthesized by a two-step method for excellent hydrogen evolution performance at a universal pH range. The optimized electron cloud distribution of Mo 2 C/Mo 2 N would promote the formation of electron transfer channels, boosting the hydrogen evolution catalytic activity of the heterostructure. The MoCN heterostructure only needs 86.5,102.5 and 120.5 mV overpotentials to reach 10 mA·cm −2 in alkaline, acidic and neutral media, respectively. Not only that, MoCN-750-2 h had a low Tafel slope (37.2 and 88.5 mV·dec −1 ) in alkaline and neutral media, implying that catalytic kinetic is close to the level of Pt/C.

Precise regulation of Mo2N–TiO2 deposited Pt nanoparticles induced synergistic effect for the hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde

Yanping Dong,Qi Guo,Xiqiang Tian,Muhammad Zahid

The amalgamation of an appropriate cocatalyst is a proficient technique to expand the efficacy of precious Pt-based catalytic materials. In this study, Mo 2 N–TiO 2 with regularly distributed Mo 2 N particles were simply prepared for the deposition of precious Pt nanoparticles (NPs). Numerous techniques were implemented to thoroughly explore, how synthesis method influence the bulk structural, interfacial and cata1ytic features of the as-prepared 3 wt%Pt/TiO 2 and 3 wt%Pt/Mo 2 N–TiO 2 catalytic materials. The catalytic results obviously show that the 3 wt%Pt/Mo 2 N–TiO 2 catalyst has exceptional hydrogenation performance when compared to 3 wt%Pt/TiO 2 catalyst. The 3 wt%Pt/Mo 2 N–TiO 2 catalyst displayed high conversion (72.4 %) of cinnamaldehyde (CAL) with a maximum selectivity (82.1 %) towards C O bond. The excellent hydrogenation performance is attributed to the synergistic interaction taking place between Pt NPs and Mo 2 N entities of 3 wt%Pt/Mo 2 N–TiO 2 . Also, the enhanced standardized dispersal of Pt NPs on the Mo 2 N–TiO 2 surface causes more exposed Pt 0 sites on the 3 wt%Pt/Mo 2 N–TiO 2 surface, which is productive for the improved activation and conversion of C O bond of CAL to yield COL . In addition, the 3 wt%Pt/Mo 2 N–TiO 2 catalyst retained its higher catalytic activity for consecutive five successive rounds without substantial loss in either conversion or selectivity.

CoO-Mo2N hollow heterostructure for high-efficiency electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction

Su Danni,Zhang Xiaomeng,Wu Aiping,Yan Haijing,Liu Ziyi,Wang Lei,Tian Chungui,Fu Honggang

Driving the electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) with solar-energy cells is considered a green and sustainable way to produce H 2 . Herein, CoO-Mo 2 N hollow heterojunctions were designed for effective HER based on the combined virtues of the hollow structure and heterojunctions. The hollow CoMoO 4 -Co(OH) 2 precursor was first synthesized via the reaction of Co 2+ from ZIF-67 with MoO 4 2− and OH − in a Na 2 MoO 4 solution. A series of experiments indicate the formation of the hollow Co-Mo-O precursor followed a mechanism analogous to the nanoscale “Kirkendall Effect”. After heating in NH 3 , the CoO-Mo 2 N hollow heterostructure was obtained. The Mo species in the precursor played an important role in maintaining the morphology under nitridation treatment. The hollow structure is favorable for contact and diffusion of electrolyte with (in) catalysts, while the CoO in CoO-Mo 2 N is favorable for the dissociation of water. Both promote the HER. Under optimized conditions, the hollow catalyst exhibited good HER performance with an overpotential of 65 mV at 10 mA cm −2 in 1 M KOH. The performance is better than that of many nonprecious metal-based catalysts. An electrolyzer composed of CoO-Mo 2 N heterojunctions as the cathode and NiFe-LDH as the anode can be driven by a solar cell to achieve effective overall water splitting. The adjudication of MOFs makes the route promising for the design of robust catalysts for advanced application.

H2 production from ammonia decomposition with Mo2N catalyst driven by dielectric barrier discharge plasma

Zhijun Wang,Huazhou Zhang,Zongbiao Ye,Ge He,Che Liao,Jiyou Deng,Guangjiu Lei,Guoyao Zheng,Kun Zhang,Fujun Gou,Xinchun Mao

Dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma-assisted ammonia decomposition reaction was investigated to produce carbon-free hydrogen for fuel cell applications . Mo 2 N catalyst was synthesized and applied for catalytic ammonia decomposition in different reaction modes. The synergistic effect of using Mo 2 N catalyst in combination with DBD plasma resulted in near complete conversion of NH 3 decomposition at specific energy input (SEI) of 39.6 kJ L −1 , giving an energy efficiency of 6.1 mol·kWh −1 for H 2 production. The particle size of Mo 2 N catalyst was discovered to affect the plasma-catalytic performance for NH 3 decomposition, with Mo 2 N-powder catalyst showing higher reactivity compared with Mo 2 N-particle catalyst. The plasma diagnostic results showed that, compared to the filamentary discharge with Mo 2 N-particle catalyst, the Mo 2 N-powder catalyst packing lead to a predominant surface discharge; such localized surface discharges might contribute to a facile transportation of reactive species from the plasma phase to the catalyst surface , thus leading to higher plasma-catalytic performance.

Deposition of ultrasmall γ-Mo2N nanocrystals on TiO2 nanowires and their promotion effect on photocatalytic activity

Geshan Zhang,Hanrui Wu,Hangdi Yu,Xiali Zheng,Tian Yuan,Xiaoqiang Jin,Yifan Zheng,Zongjian Liu

Mo 2 N decorated TiO 2 nanowires were obtained via impregnating titanate nanowires with a mixture of (NH 4 ) 6 Mo 7 O 24 and hexamethylenetetramine , followed by the calcination at 600–800 o C in N 2 atmosphere. The results show that only Mo 6+ species can be found in the sample calcined at 600 o C while Mo element is still dominantly in the form of Mo 6+ with a negligible amount of γ-Mo 2 N (namely Mo δ+ , 0 < δ < 4) and Mo 4+ at 700 o C. In the sample calcined at 800 o C, however, ultrasmall γ-Mo 2 N nanocrystals with an average size of about 3.3 nm can be observed on the surface of TiO 2 nanowires. The photocatalytic activity test reveals that, although the γ-Mo 2 N-absent sample obtained at 800 o C is dominantly in the form of inert rutile TiO 2 , the introduction of γ-Mo 2 N nanocrystals can significantly improve its performance to be more than doubled in methyl orange (MO) removal percentage, increasing from 36.5% to 75.5% after 2h irradiation (high-pressure mercury lamp), due to the formation of heterojunction between γ-Mo 2 N and TiO 2 nanowires. Furthermore, 5% γ-Mo 2 N decorated TiO 2 exhibit better photocatalytic activity due to its higher surface area and more heterojunctions between γ-Mo 2 N and TiO 2 . This γ-Mo 2 N decorated TiO 2 photocatalyst can broaden the practical scope of rutile TiO 2 and have a promising potential in photocatalytic application.

High-performance multidimensional-structured N-doped nickel modulated Mo2N/FeOxNy bifunctional electrocatalysts for efficient alkaline seawater splitting

Yanxiang He,Yuwen Hu,Zhixiao Zhu,Jieqiong Li,Yongchao Huang,Shiguo Zhang,M.-S. Balogun,Yexiang Tong

Realizing effective alkaline water/seawater electrolysis through efficient hydrogen and oxygen evolution reaction (HER and OER) electrocatalysts is demanding but attracts significant task. Herein, a novel NNNF@Mo 2 N/FeO x N y electrocatalyst comprising of Mo 2 N/FeO x N y interfacial rod-shaped structure on nitrogen-doped nickel nanosheets modified nickel foam (NF) (denoted NNNF) with remarkable HER and OER catalytic performance is reported. The nanosheet-rod structure coupled with multidimensional interfacial boundaries enriches the optimized NNNF@Mo 2 N/FeO x N y catalyst with rich active sites. As a result, the as-prepared NNNF@Mo 2 N/FeO x N y catalyst demands low overpotentials of 22/130 mV and 28/142 mV to drive current densities of 10/100 mA cm −2 for the HER, 222/348 mV and 239/361 mV for the OER in 1 M alkaline freshwater/seawater electrolytes, respectively. The catalyst also reveals excellent HER and OER stability for 100 h at a constant high current density of 100 mA cm −2 in both electrolytes. The catalyst also acts as bifunctional catalyst in overall water electrolytic devices requiring low overall voltages of 1.42/1.47 V@20 mA cm −2 in alkaline freshwater/seawater electrolytes, as well as considerable voltages of 1.50/1.81 V@100/500 mA cm −2 in 6 M KOH seawater electrolyte at 60 °C for industrial conditions.
