Constructing Mo5+ sites in molybdenum oxide by lattice stress for efficient ammonia synthesis

Yuxi Ren,Hang Xiao,Ben Chong,Mengyang Xia,Song Kou,Aofei Xu,Jia Li,Jiantao Liu,Honghui Ou,Zhiwei Ren,Guidong Yang

Molybdenum oxide (MoO 3 ) is a promising catalyst for electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction (eNRR). However, Mo sites with saturated coordination are not favorable to stable N 2 adsorption. Herein, we employed sodium ions as electron donors to interact with the interlayer atoms of MoO 3 , causing localized lattice stress on it and weakening the M-O bond, thus inducing the Mo 5+ active sites (Na x MoO 3 ). The N 2 temperature-programmed desorption (N 2 -TPD) result of the as-prepared Na x MoO 3 exhibits that introducing Mo 5+ could significantly improve the N 2 adsorption on the catalyst’s surface. The optimized Na x MoO 3 has an NH 3 yield of 41.3 μg h −1 mg −1 at ambient temperature and an FE of 21.4 %, which is in the relatively advanced position in the contemporaneous studies. Both experiments and density-functional theory (DFT) calculation demonstrated that the Mo 5+ sites can effectively reduce the d-orbital energy level of Mo, which significantly enhances the interaction with N 2 .

Mo5+ doping induced interface polarization for improving performance of planar perovskite solar cells

Yurong Jiang,Yue Yang,Yiting Liu,Shan Yan,Yanxing Feng,Congxin Xia

In this paper, we investigate how interface-induced polarization affects the photovoltaic performance of hybrid perovskite solar cell (PSC) devices. The polarization of the hole transport layer (HTL) is regulated through incorporating metallic-like MoOx into PEDOT:PSS. The common MoO3 doped into PEDOT:PSS is used as a reference, and the device that used PEDOT:PSS-MoOx as the HTL shows an enhanced Jsc and FF compared to the reference device. The open-circuit photovoltage decay and impedance spectroscopy measurements indicate that trap-assisted recombination is effectively suppressed at the interface between the hybrid perovskite and the PEDOT:PSS-MoOx HTL, while severe trap assisted recombination takes place at the perovskite/PEDOT:PSS and perovskite/PEDOT:PSS-MoO3 interface. We attribute these experimental findings to the fact that the incorporation of metallic-like Mo5+ into PEDOT:PSS enhances the conductivity of HTL and the interface polarization between PEDTOT:PSS layer and perovskite, which helps to induce an interface polarization electric field to facilitate separation of charges and screen the recombination between the traps and free charges.

Synthesis of Mo4O11@MoO3 nanobelts and their improved sensing performance to NO2 gas

Yixue Li,Zhongxiao Song,Yanhuai Li,Sha Li,Hairong Wang,Baorui Song,Bo Gao,Xiaoye Du

In the present work, Mo4O11 @MoO3 nanobelts are successfully prepared by a two-step hydrothermal method. The nanobelts are about several micrometers in length and 200–300 nm in width with Mo4O11 nanoparticle on surface. The introduction of nanoparticles act as the adsorption sites which facilitate the adsorption of O2 and NO2 gas molecules, because of the point defects such as Mo5+ ions and oxygen vacancies inducing to increase the concentration of carriers, which synthetically contribute the sensing performance enhancement. The Mo4O11@MoO3 nanobelts show excellent sensing performance with 6 times enhancement with the decreased working temperature comparing with the pure α-MoO3 nanobelts. This study indicate that this kind of sensor show a promising application in NO2 detection.

Controllable synthesis of the defect-enriched MoO3−x nanosheets as an effective visible-light photocatalyst for the degradation of organic dyes

Yuqi Zhang,Xiang Yu,Huan Liu,Xinyi Lian,Bin Shang,Yue Zhan,Tingting Fan,Zhou Chen,Xiaodong Yi

Transition metal oxides (TMOs) are emerging as a promising class of photocatalysts for pollutants' treatment. In this report, by integrating anti-solvent crystallization and thermal treatments, we have developed a facile and environmental approach for the synthesis of MoO3−x nanosheets in the presence of hexadecyl-trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB). The thickness of MoO3−x nanosheets varies from 20 nm to 40 nm. CTAB promotes the formation of nanosheet morphology and Mo5+ defects. Combining experimental results and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we demonstrate that the Mo5+ defect state in MoO3−x nanosheets can enhance visible light harvest and promote the separation of photo-generated electron–hole pairs. Hence, MoO3−x-8, the optimal photocatalyst, shows the highest concentration of surface Mo5+ defect (18.7%) and the best photocatalytic activity toward rhodamine B (RhB) photodegradation. About 95.9% RhB is degraded within 15 min under visible-light irradiation (λ > 420 nm). The kinetic rate of MoO3−x-8 reaches 117 times that of commercial MoO3. It was proved by the total organic carbon (TOC) measurements that about 43.3% of RhB molecules were degraded to CO2 and H2O. Overall, this work provides an effective pathway for the nanomaterial design and potential applications in the photocatalytic oxidation of organic pollutants.

Promotional effect of Co and Ni on MoO3 catalysts for hydrogenolysis of dibenzofuran to biphenyl under atmospheric hydrogen pressure

Jie Zhang,Chuang Li,Weixiang Guan,Xiaozhen Chen,Xiao Chen,Chi-Wing Tsang,Changhai Liang

Co(Ni)/MoO 3 catalysts were prepared, characterized and evaluated for the hydrogenolysis of bio-derived dibenzofuran (DBF), aiming at the understanding of the promoting effect of Co/Ni on MoO 3 for high-yield production of aromatic products. All Co(Ni)/MoO 3 catalysts selectively cleaved C-O bond, thus effectively transformed DBF to biphenyl (BP) at relatively moderate conditions. The experimental results from varying Mo species by adjusting the reduction temperature of MoO 3 together with XPS and in-situ XRD characteristic were evident that Mo 5+ species was responsible as the major active specie for the reaction. Promotional effect between Co(Ni) and Mo in Co(Ni)/MoO 3 catalysts was observed, resulted from the presence of acidic Co(Ni)MoO 4 species and a large number of Mo 5+ species both of which were created local to the Co(Ni)-O-Mo interface, as can be characterized by in-situ XRD, XPS, H 2 -TPR, NH 3 -TPD, in-situ FT-IR, Raman and TEM. The trend of the initial reaction rate follows: MoO 3 (0.18 μmol∙g cat −1 ∙s −1 ) < Ni/MoO 3 (0.26 μmol∙g cat −1 ∙s −1 ) < Co/MoO 3 (0.29 μmol∙g cat −1 ∙s −1 ), corresponding to the decreasing activation barrier. And the best catalytic activity was observed for the 100% yield of BP over Co/MoO 3 . A possible mechanism, including Co(Ni) facilitated reduction of Mo 6+ to Mo 5+ and Co(Ni) enhanced formation of acidic sites, is proposed to be responsible for the high activity in Co(Ni)/MoO 3 catalysts.

In Situ Fabrication of the Al2O3@NiMo Core–Shell Catalyst from LDH for Low-Pressure Hydrodeoxygenation of Fatty Acid Methyl Ester

Shudong Wang,Yuhan Cui,Chenxi Zhao,Changhai Liang,Chuang Li

The hydrothermal stability of supported metal catalysts is one of the greatest challenges in the development of biomass conversion to chemicals and fuels. Herein, a hydrotalcite-based core–shell catalyst (Al2O3@NiMo-LDO) was synthesized by urea precipitation and ion-exchange methods, which could selectively convert bio-oil model compounds to liquid alkanes with high activity and selectivity and excellent hydrothermal stability at low pressure. In the hydrogenation of methyl palmitate, the catalyst afforded 81% conversion and 99% selectivity of n-pentadecane and n-hexadecane under low pressure, with excellent hydrothermal stability. The excellent catalytic performance of Al2O3@NiMo-LDO was attributed to the strong hydrogen activation ability, improvement of the utilization of active components under low pressure, and the increase in the number of active Mo5+ species. The superior hydrothermal stability was attributed to the core–shell structure, which avoided the influence of the specific surface area of Al2O3 that is reduced by the hydration reaction between Al2O3 and H2O at high temperature.

Transition Metal (Molybdenum)-Doped Drug-like Conformational Nanoarchitectonics with Altered Valence States (Mn2+/Mn4+ and Mo5+/Mo6+) for Augmented Cancer Theranostics

Hong-Ying Xia,Ying Zhao,Ruo-Yin Meng,Ai-Zheng Chen,Shi-Bin Wang,Ranjith Kumar Kankala

Despite the advancements in cancer therapy, delivering active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) using nanoparticles remains challenging due to the failed conveyance of the required drug payload, poor targeting ability, and poor biodistribution, hampering their clinical translation. Recently, the appropriate design of materials with intrinsic therapeutic functionalities has garnered enormous interest in the development of various intelligent therapeutic nanoplatforms. In this study, we demonstrate the fabrication of transition metal (molybdenum, Mo)-doped manganese dioxide (MnO2) nanoarchitectures, exhibiting diagnostic (magnetic resonance imaging, MRI) and therapeutic (chemodynamic therapy, CDT) functionalities. The facile hydrothermal approach-assisted Mo-doped MnO2 flower-like nanostructures offered tailorable morphologies in altered dimensions, precise therapeutic effects, exceptional biocompatibility, and biodegradability in the tumor microenvironment. The resultant defects due to doped Mo species exhibited peroxidase and oxidase activities, improving glutathione (GSH) oxidation. The two sets of variable valence metal ion pairs (Mn2+/Mn4+ and Mo5+/Mo6+) and their interplay could substantially improve the Fenton-like reaction and generate toxic hydroxyl radicals (•OH), thus achieving CDT-assisted antitumor effects. As inherent T1-MRI agents, these MnO2 nanoparticles displayed excellent MRI efficacy in vitro. Together, we believe that these conformational Mo-doped MnO2 nanoarchitectures with two pairs of variable valence states could potentiate drugless therapy in pharmaceutics.

Planar Organic-Si Hybrid Solar Cell with MoOx Mixed PEDOT:PSS as Hole Injection Layer Profits from Mo5+ and Mo6+ Synergistic Effects

Wenzhong Fang,Pan Wang,Zitao Ni,Tao Sun,Chaoyu Xiang,Kun Yue,Rongfei Wang,Jie Yang,Yao Zhou,Chong Wang,Yu Yang

Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) hole injection layer plays an important role in planar Si/PEDOT:PSS heterojunction solar cells (HSCs). Herein, a MoO x mixed aqueous PEDOT:PSS cosolvent is developed and is applied into a Si/PEDOT:PSS solar cell preparation via a time-saving one-step spin-coating method. With an optimal concentration of MoO x dopants, the power conversion efficiency of the device exhibits from 10.26% up to 13.82% with all inherent photovoltaic parameters enhanced. The detailed characterization and analytical results indicate that an advanced electronic property is produced by MoO x dopants and interface optimization caused by synergistic effects from Mo 5+ and Mo 6+ species with PEDOT:PSS, which enhances its interface work function and promotes hole transportation capacity. The result paves a path for exploring efficient Si/PEDOT:PSS HSCs with suitable functional material and a simple solution-processable method.

Synthesis of olefins by selective hydrodeoxygenation of lignocellulosic ketones

Fengan Han,Yanting Liu,Guangyi Li,Lin Yuan,Aiqin Wang,Feng Wang,Tao Zhang,Ning Li

Selective hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of lignocellulose-derived ketones to olefins is a promising method for upgrading lignocellulosic biomass-derived molecules. Herein, zinc molybdate (ZnMoO4–E) with a disordered layered stacking structure was first prepared using a facile and environmentally friendly evaporation method and it exhibited outstanding catalytic performance for the selective HDO of lignocellulose-derived ketones to olefins. Using it, 4-heptanone, a representative of lignocellulose-derived ketones, was totally converted, and a high carbon yield of heptene (90%) was achieved at 673 K. On the basis of the characterization results, the outstanding catalytic performance of ZnMoO4–E was attributed to its porous structure, higher oxygen vacancy (or the Mo5+ species) concentration and higher acidity. Analogously, ZnMoO4–E also exhibited good catalytic performances for the selective HDO of other lignocellulose-derived ketones (such as acetone, butanone, 2-pentanone, 3-pentanone, cyclohexanone, acetophenone and 5-nonanone) to their corresponding olefins.

Synergistic Effect between Zr-MOF and Phosphomolybdic Acid with the Promotion of TiF4 Template

Zhu Ding,Xiao Min Zhang,Xue Chang,Shuo Wang,Dan-Hong Wang,Ming Hui Zhang,Tian Hao Zhang

Metal-Organic Framework (MOF) materials are often modified or functionalized, and then the crystal size and morphology of MOF materials are changed. In the process of preparing UiO-66 confined phosphomolybdic acid (PMA) composites (PU), the TiF4-modified PU (PMA + UiO-66) composite catalyst (TiF4-PU) was successfully synthesized by adding titanium tetrafluoride, and the catalytic desulfurization activity was excellent. Similarly, the reaction mechanism was investigated by means of infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, XPS, and UV/Vis spectroscopy. The results show that the addition of TiF4not only changes the appearance and color of the catalyst, but also changes the valence distribution of the elements in the catalyst. The number of oxygen vacancies in the MOF increases due to the addition of TiF4, and more electrons are transferred from the Zr-MOF to PMA to form more Mo5+, which improved the performance of oxidative desulfurization in comparison. Thus, a stronger strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) effect is observed for TiF4-modified PU catalysts. In addition, the quenching experiment of free radicals shows that ·OH radical is the main active substance in the oxidative desulfurization reaction over TiF4-PU catalyst. Keywords:MOF materials;Raman spectroscopy;Zr-MOF;SMSI;TiF4-PU;oxidative desulfurization
