Chevrel phase (CP) molybdenum sulfides (Mo 6 S 8 ) have attracted extensive research attention in the field of energy conversion and storage due to their unique electronic structures and rich open channels. However, comprehensive understanding of intrinsic kinetic mechanisms governing the electrocatalytic bi-functional hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) sensing on CP-based composites is still lacking. Herein, nanosized palladium (Pd) and Mo 6 S 8 particles were assembled in carbon nanowires (C NWs) via electrospinning followed by pyrolysis. The as-obtained novel Pd-Mo 6 S 8 /C NWs exhibited excellent performance in terms of a low overpotential of −194 mV at η 10 for HER, and an ultrahigh sensitivity of 2231 μA mM −1 cm −2 with a limit of detection of 25 nM for H 2 O 2 sensing. The experimental and theoretical findings demonstrated that Pd and Mo 6 S 8 nanoparticles (NPs) exhibited exceptional catalytic activity and strong electronic interactions. The synergistic effects of these two components could effectively modulate the binding strength of reactants and intermediates on the catalyst surface, ultimately leading to improved electrochemical catalytic performance toward reduction of small molecules. Moreover, verification of the stable tolerance in various environments and good selectivity of the electrocatalyst promoted the further use of Pd-Mo 6 S 8 /C NWs-based electrochemical sensing system for sensing additional H 2 O 2 in milk samples, proving the widespread potential of this material for practical applications. This study significantly advances the understanding of nanoscale and bi-functional CP-based composites.

Chevrel phase molybdenum sulfides (CP-Mo 6 S 8 ) have attracted considerable attention in catalysis and energy conversion owing to their unique electronic structures, open-framework channels, and remarkable electrochemical properties. Nevertheless, their practical implementation in the electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is significantly constrained by surface oxidation, which leads to diminished catalytic activity. To address this challenge, hierarchical Mo 6 S 8 @MoS 2 /carbon nanowires (C NWs) were designed in this study via a scalable electrospinning strategy combined with subsequent pyrolysis and in-situ vulcanization. The resulting nanostructure features Mo 6 S 8 nanoparticles encapsulated within rich MoS 2 nanosheets, which are supported by carbon nanowires. This architecture ensures the full functional expression of two types of molybdenum sulfides during catalysis while effectively preventing the surface oxidation of Mo 6 S 8 in air. Benefiting from this core-shell synergy, the optimized 250-Mo 6 S 8 @MoS 2 /C NWs exhibit outstanding HER performance, with a low overpotential of 181 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and a small Tafel slope of 37 mV dec −1 . Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the Mo 6 S 8 @MoS 2 heterostructure enables pronounced electronic interactions and an optimal hydrogen adsorption Gibbs free energy (ΔG H* ), explaining its excellent HER performance. This work establishes controlled oxidation and vulcanization as an effective route to efficient and robust electrocatalysts, opening new avenues for the development of cost-effective materials for energy applications. A comparative study on the effects of different binders on the electrochemical performance of rechargeable magnesium batteries with Mo 6 S 8 cathode is conducted for the first time. The selected binders are commercial organic-soluble polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), water-soluble poly(acrylic acid) (PAA), poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), gelatin, sodium alginate (SA) and Beta-cyclodextrin (β-CD). The binders significantly affect the physical properties, thus the electrochemical performance of Mo 6 S 8 cathode. Compared with those using traditional PVDF binder, Mo 6 S 8 electrodes with PAA and PVA exhibit enhanced cycling stabilities and rate capabilities, which are attributed to the improved cohesion among the electrode constituents and adhesion between the electrode laminate and the current collector. In addition, the anodic stability of these binders is not only related to the chemical structure of binders, but also to the uniformity of electrode surface . SA binder shows low anodic stability duo to containing easily oxidized groups. Non-uniform electrode surface decreases the anodic stability of PVDF based Mo 6 S 8 electrode. Gelatin can be used as a binder in the formulation of high voltage cathodes for rechargeable magnesium batteries.

Rechargeable magnesium batteries are considered with great potential as sustainable, economic-friendly, safe energy storage techniques. Whereas, the Mg metal anode exhibits limited plating/stripping behavior in the conventional electrolytes due to the severe passivation. Herein, a facile LiI solution treatment is reported to reconstruct the interphase between Mg metal anode and electrolytes, converting the original passivation film to I-riched solid electrolyte interphase with the ability of rapid Mg2+ migration, which can reduce the overpotential for Mg anode plating/stripping from 2 to 0.4 V at 0.1 mA cm–2. In addition, Li+ from the LiI precursor can be released and shuttles to the Mo6S8 cathode side, promoting cointercalation of Mg2+. With the simultaneous improvement of the anode and cathode, the Mg//Mo6S8 full cell delivers a decreasing voltage hysteresis (0.1 V) and much enhanced specific capacity (80.8 mAh g–1). This work provides a maneuverable anode treatment for constructing a passivation-against interphase between Mg metal anode and the conventional electrolytes, contributing an insight for the development toward high-performance Mg batteries.

High concentration magnesium borohydride/tetraglyme electrolyte for rechargeable magnesium batteries is simply prepared by dissolving inorganic magnesium salt Mg(BH 4 ) in tetraglyme (TG) ether solvent with good safety. 90 °C heating treatment is performed in the preparation process and LiBH 4 as a chelating agent is added to improve the electrochemical performance. Mg deposition–dissolution performance and the electrochemical window of the electrolyte on non-inert stainless steel (SS), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu) electrodes and inert platinum (Pt) electrode are systematically studied by cyclic voltammetry and constant current discharge–charge measurements. 0.5 mol L −1 heated Mg(BH 4 ) 2 /LiBH 4 /TG ([LiBH 4 ] = 1.5 mol L −1 ) solution shows good electrochemical performance with 2.4 V ( vs . Mg RE) anodic stability on stainless steel, close to 100% Mg deposition/dissolution efficiency and high cycling reversibility . Furthermore, the reversible electrochemical process of Mg intercalation into Mo 6 S 8 cathode with excellent cycling performance in the electrolyte indicates the feasible application in rechargeable magnesium batteries.
