Oxidation behaviors of Al 2 O 3 reinforced MoAlB ceramics prepared by spark plasma sintering were investigated at 800–1200 °C. The results revealed that appropriate addition of Al 2 O 3 facilitated the improvement of oxidation resistance and mechanical properties of MoAlB ceramics. Among them, the composite ceramics with 5 vol% Al 2 O 3 addition possessed reinforced antioxidant properties with the oxide layer thickness being only 1.81 µm for 800 °C and 2.08 µm for 1000 °C after oxidation for 64 h, respectively. MoAlB ceramics added with 10 vol% Al 2 O 3 demonstrated the optimal mechanical properties. However, excessive addition of Al 2 O 3 adversely affected both the antioxidant and mechanical properties.

3D anisotropic functional properties (such as magnetic, electrical, thermal, and optical properties, etc.) in a single material are not only beneficial to the multipurpose of a material, but also helpful to enrich the regulatory dimensionality of functional materials. Herein, a colossal 3D electrical anisotropy of layered MAB-phase MoAlB single crystal is introduced and dissected. Using high-temperature metal-solution method, high-quality MoAlB single crystals are obtained and a surprisingly strong out-of-plane ( σ a / σ b = 1.43 × 10 5 , at 2 K) and in-plane ( σ a / σ c = 12.12, at 2 K) electrical anisotropies are first observed. After a series of experimental and theoretical investigations, it is demonstrated that the 3D anisotropic crystal structure and chemical bond of MoAlB result in its 3D anisotropic phonon vibration and electronic structure, influence the corresponding electron-electron as well as electron-phonon interactions, and finally give rise to its colossal 3D anisotropy of electrical conductivity. This work experimentally and theoretically proves MoAlB single crystal possessing the 3D anisotropies of crystal structure, chemical bond, phonon vibration, electronic structure, and electrical transport, but also provides a promising platform for the future design of functionalized electronic devices as well as synthesis of new and large-sized in-plane anisotropic 2D material (MoBene).

The unique microstructure of biomaterials provides inspiration in materials structure design and performance breakthroughs. Here we prepared a MoAlB reinforced Al matrix composites with laminated structure and strong interfacial bonding. This work mainly focuses on the relationship between tribological properties of the MoAlB/Al laminated composites and the MoAlB layer orientation. The results show that the tribological properties of the composites deeply depend on the relation of sliding direction VS. the MoAlB layer orientation, while the dependency gradually decreases with the MoAlB content increasing. The friction coefficient and wear rate of the composites can be decreased by 55.5% and 95.1%, lower than those of pure Al, when 15 vol% MoAlB reinforcement is added. The friction and wear mechanisms of the MoAlB/Al laminated composites are proposed, and the outstanding tribological properties are ascribed to the formation of tribochemical worn film and different stress states caused by the laminated structure.

In this study, MoAlB was introduced as a reactive precursor in MoSi 2 -based ceramics. During spark plasma sintering, MoAlB underwent in-situ decomposition, forming MoB and Al 2 O 3 phases. These phases were distributed uniformly within the MoSi 2 matrix as reinforcing phases. This resulted in significant improvements in hardness and toughness, with the peak flexural strength obtained for 10 vol% MoAlB addition. Oxidation tests from 900-1500 ℃ revealed a temperature-dependent oxidation behavior. At 1500 ℃, volatilization of MoO 3 and B 2 O 3 destabilized the oxide scale, while the 5 vol% MoAlB composite offered excellent protection at intermediate temperatures (900-1200 ℃). The formation of a stable SiO 2 -B 2 O 3 -Al 2 O 3 self-healing glass provided effective protection in this critical temperature range. These findings demonstrate MoAlB’s effectiveness in designing MoSi 2 -based ceramics for intermediate temperature applications.

MAB phases, renowned for exceptional creep resistance, thermal shock resistance, and damage tolerance, are emerging as promising structural ceramics. However, conventional synthesis methods face limitations including prolonged processing, complex by-product formation, and high energy consumption, hindering widespread adoption. To address these challenges, we developed an efficient high pressure and high temperature (HPHT) approach for synthesizing high-purity MoAlB with excellent crystallinity. Scanning electron microscopy reveals a disordered-orientation lamellar microstructure comprising individual layers tens of nanometers thick. MoAlB sample exhibited a Vickers hardness of 17.6 GPa, with outstanding mechanical properties, including high fracture toughness and Young’s modulus of 8.09 MPa·m 1/2 and 316.2 GPa, respectively. Transmission electron microscopy confirms HPHT-induced stacking faults, edge dislocations, and vacancies that collectively enhance mechanical performance. Microstructural analysis of Vickers indentation zones demonstrates active toughening mechanisms including transgranular fracture deflections, crack branching, and bridging. XPS analysis verifies anisotropic bonding in MoAlB, where electron transfer between Al layers and Mo-B layers critically stabilizes the crystal structure. Crucially, comparative synthesis analysis demonstrates that HPHT processed MoAlB achieves superior mechanical properties with significantly reduced processing time than traditional method. These findings establish HPHT synthesis as a promising route for advanced MAB phase material fabrication.

MoAlB, a MAB phase, exhibits significant potential as a reinforcement material for copper matrix composites due to its exceptional overall properties. However, its application is limited by the tendency to decompose at elevated temperatures during processing, leading to fragmentation and a reduction in the copper matrix’s electrical conductivity. Addressing this challenge, this study successfully prepared two-dimensional (2D) MoAlB nanosheets (NSs) via viscous-solvent-assisted ball milling. Subsequently, these nanosheets were employed as reinforcement to fabricate MoAlB NSs/Cu composites through an impregnation-reduction-sintering route. Characterization of the resulting composite revealed a limited interfacial reaction between the 2D MoAlB NSs and the copper matrix, leading to the formation of a distinctive gradient interface structure. The gradient interface consists of a Cu/MoB atomic-scale composite transition zone and a Mo2AlB2/Cu semicoherent interface. This reaction-limited and robust interface synergistically activates multiple strengthening mechanisms, including significant grain refinement, efficient load transfer, and dislocation strengthening. Moreover, this structure effectively mitigates solute atom electron scattering in the copper matrix by constraining Al atom diffusion to the interfacial regions. Consequently, the 0.5 wt % MoAlB NSs/Cu composite achieved a notable balance of mechanical and electrical properties: a tensile strength of 333.3 MPa, which represents a significant improvement over pure Cu (255.1 MPa) and the 0.5 wt % MoAlB/Cu composite (268 MPa), combined with an elongation of 15.5% and an electrical conductivity of 92.6% IACS. Additionally, the composites demonstrated superior resistance to high-temperature softening, retaining high hardness even after annealing at 900 °C. These findings present a new design strategy for creating next-generation high-performance metal matrix composites.

As novel two-dimensional materials, MBenes derived from bulk ternary metal borides (MAB phase) have attracted increasing attention but are limited by their preparation strategy. In this work, MoxBy (MBene) derivatives with an accordion-like structure were successfully prepared by completely etching an Al layer from MoAlB via a molten-salt method. The thermal behaviors, crystal structure, and surface chemical state were analyzed using DSC/TG, XRD and XPS analyses, respectively. The micro-morphology of the obtained MBene was then characterized using scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy accompanied by EDS mappings. The results reveal that the MBene synthesized at 620 °C (abbreviated as MBene-620) demonstrates its characteristic (020) peak and layered structure. When used as an advanced anode for Li-ion batteries (LIBs), the MBene delivers excellent electrochemical performances with a reversible specific capacity of 638.2 mA h g−1 after 100 cycles at a current density of 0.1 A g−1. As a promising green strategy, this molten-salt method provides a new opportunity to explore the wide-ranging applications of MBene series, particularly in new energy fields of LIBs.

Sesamol is a momentous marker for evaluating the quality of sesame or sesame products. In this study, a new strategy for fabricating portable smartphone sensor based on violet phosphorene (VP)/two-dimensional transition metal borides (MBene) nanozyme modified with Au − Ag bimetallic nanoparticles (Au − AgNPs) on the surface of the screen-printed electrode, which is synthesized under the guidance of machine learning (ML) with eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) algorithms, is described for intelligent sensing of sesamol in farmland and agricultural fields. A fluorine-free hydrothermal-assisted alkane etching strategy is used to prepare the fence-like MoAlB-MBene. Highly environmentally stable VP/MoAlB-MBene nanozyme decorated by Au − Ag bimetallic nanoparticles is obtained by ultrasonic-assisted liquid-phase exfoliation with XGBoost assistance. The ML models including artificial neural network, support vector machine and XGBoost for the synthesis of nanozyme are contrasted and discussed, and the XGBoost algorithm is found as the most accurate model for synthesizing nanozyme due to the highest value of correlation coefficient. The nanozyme-modified screen-printed carbon electrode coupled with the palm-sized smartphone-controlled wireless electrochemical device as a portable wireless intelligent sensing platform for the determination of sesamol in a wider linear range of 0.1 ∼ 1000 μmol/L with a lower limit of detection of 21 nmol/L, which enable the on-site determination of 10 varieties of sesame seeds. This work will provide a new reference for the one-step preparation of bimetallic nanoparticles decorated graphene-like nanozyme guided by ML for cost-effective, simple, fast detection of phytochemicals in agricultural products using a portable smartphone sensor.
