PurposeThis study aims to reveal the tribological mechanism of synergistic effect between MoDTC and P-containing additives in aluminum-based grease.Design/methodology/approachThe authors prepared a molybdenum dialkyl dithiocarbamate (MoDTC) and revealed the tribological mechanism of synergistic effect between MoDTC and P-containing additives in aluminum-based grease by combining with ZDDP and P-containing and S-free additives.FindingsThe MoDTC the authors prepared has good friction-reducing and anti-wear properties in aluminum-based grease and has an obvious synergistic effect with ZDDP. MoDTC and ZDDP have a significant synergistic effect on the tribological properties in aluminum-based grease, mainly because of the formation of phosphates and metaphosphates as well as more MoS2in the friction film. P element plays a facilitating role in the chemical conversion of MoDTC to MoS2.Originality/valueThe experiments of MoDTC with tributyl phosphate and trimethylphenyl phosphate confirm that the P element plays a facilitating role in the chemical conversion of MoDTC into MoS2.Peer reviewThe peer review history for this article is available at: https://publons.com/publon/10.1108/ILT-12-2023-0410

Molybdenum dithiocarbamate (MoDTC) can significantly reduce friction and wear through the formation of lubricious tribofilm by decomposition of MoDTC, but it is difficult to regulate the tribochemical behaviors. In this study, TiO 2 nanoparticles was used as nano-additive combined with MoDTC, leading to reduced friction and wear under 50 N. The addition of TiO 2 with proper concentration can promote the formation of lubricious Mo-content tribofilm. Meanwhile, TiO 2 in tribofilm also lead to enhanced wear-resistance. Moreover, the dynamic evolution of the tribofilm is also investigated under varied conditions to elucidate the synergetic lubrication mechanisms between MoDTC and TiO 2 . These findings offer fundamental understandings of the lubrication mechanisms of MoDTC when combined with nano-additives from both tribochemical and tribomechanical viewpoints.
Molybdenum dithiocarbamate (MoDTC) could effectively enhance the friction-reducing, anti-wear, and load-bearing capacity between mechanical friction pairs, but further improvement was essential. In this study, the layered double hydroxides (LDHs) with various chemical compositions were synthesized and subsequently employed alongside MoDTC to investigate the tribological properties of poly α olefin 8 (PAO8). It was found that the variation of composition had significant impacts on the friction performance of PAO8. The addition of Ni/Al LDHs with proper concentration, whether used alone or in conjunction with MoDTC, could greatly boost the tribological properties of PAO8. Notably, the synergistic effect between Ni/Al LDHs and MoDTC accelerated the forming rate of tribofilm composed of various metal oxides and sulfates, ultimately enhancing load-bearing and tribological properties.

The Mg/Al hydrotalcite with different morphologies was prepared under mild conditions through a coprecipitation process. The sulfur- and phosphorus-free MA2 nanosheets were used in combination with MoDTC to improve the low load-bearing capacity and unsatisfactory tribological properties of organic molybdenum in PAO8. Especially, the 2.0 wt % MA2 nanosheets combined with 2.0 wt % MoDTC demonstrated the highest friction performances in PAO8. The results indicated that the synergistic effect between MA2 and MoDTC contributes to the formation of a stable tribofilm composed of MoS2, MgO, Al2O3, MoO3, Fe2(SO4)3, Fe2O3, and Fe3O4. This tribofilm not only could effectively protect the friction interface and provide friction-reducing and antiwear effects but also possess high film-forming rates (PB value) and load-bearing capacity.
