Coral-like Fe-doped MoO2/C heterostructures with rich oxygen vacancies for efficient electrocatalytic N2 reduction

Zhifeng He,Xin Cui,Guangping Lei,Zeyi Liu,Xiaoyang Yang,Yifu Liu,Jiafeng Wan,Fangwei Ma

Molybdenum (Mo) is one of the most important constituent elements in natural nitrogenase and theoretical calculation results show that Mo-based materials can be used as potential NRR electrocatalysts. The design of advanced catalysts with a special structure is very essential for promoting the development of electrocatalytic N2 into NH3. In this paper, Fe-doped MoO2/C heterostructured nanoparticles with rich oxygen vacancies (Vo) are designed and they exhibit highly efficient catalytic activity for artificial N2 fixation in neutral electrolytes under ambient conditions. The influence of the atomic ratio of the Fe source to the Mo source and the NaBH4 ethanol solution treatment on the structure and electrocatalytic performance are systematically investigated. The Vo-Fe–MoO2/C (1 : 50) catalyst with rich oxygen vacancies shows a satisfactory electrocatalytic N2 reduction reaction (e-NRR) activity in 0.1 M Na2SO4 with a high ammonia yield rate of 15.87 ± 0.3 μg h−1 mg−1 at −0.5 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode (vs. the RHE) and a FE of 13.4% at −0.3 V (vs. the RHE). According to the results of DFT calculations, the active center of the electro-catalytic nitrogen reduction reaction is the molybdenum atom between the iron atom and the O vacancy. Oxygen vacancies can not only reduce the energy barrier of the RDS but also facilitate the desorption of ammonia and the first step hydrogenation of nitrogen. The doping of Fe will change the electronic state of the Mo atom in MoO2.

Xiao Yang,Rong Qiang,Yulong Shao,Fangjie Ren,Lei Rong,Jingbo Fang,Rui Xue,Zihan Liu

With the advancement of modern electronic communication technology, the development of efficient absorbing materials has attracted great interest. Here, hollow hydrangea-like Mo 2 C/MoO 2 /C composites are synthesized by soft template method. By adjusting the pyrolysis temperature, Mo 2 C/MoO 2 /C composites with different Mo 2 C and MoO 2 contents and degrees of graphitization can be selectively synthesized. The Mo 2 C/MoO 2 /C-800 composite with the 30 wt% filler content exhibits a minimum reflection loss of −62.9 dB at 1.6 mm and achieves a maximum absorption bandwidth of 6.2 GHz at 1.9 mm. The interaction between the dielectric properties of each component and the unique 3D hydrangea-like structure promotes microwave absorption and dissipation. Besides, CST simulation further demonstrates the effectiveness of electromagnetic wave dissipation in practical applications. The excellent properties of the hydrangea-like Mo 2 C/MoO 2 /C composites indicate their promising applications in electromagnetic wave absorbers.

Enhancement of iron cycling in Fenton-like catalysis by MoO2-C: Carbon-mediated efficient electron transport

Xinyu Wang,Shiqi Chen,Can Liu,Jiapeng Yue,Zhiwei Yang,Qian Ye,Hao Xu,Yujian Zhang,Xinyi Xing,Jing Zhang

In this study, the charge transfer capability of MoO 2 materials was significantly improved by introducing carbon materials in situ. The resulting MoO 2 -C material could accelerate the Fe(III)/Fe(II) redox cycle and promote the continuous generation of reactive oxygen species in Fenton-like system. The results suggested that MoO 2 -C exhibited significant co-catalytic activity against a variety of pollutants. Meanwhile, the mechanisms behind the Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle and reactive oxygen species generation were clarified. Analysis indicated that the incorporation of carbon material provided a reduction active site for the reduction of Fe(III) to Fe(II) on the surface of molybdenum oxide, and also reduced the thermodynamic energy barrier associated with Fe(III) reduction. Furthermore, quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) technology demonstrated that hydroxyl radicals ( ∙ O H ) and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) rapidly degrade the target pollutants. Fe(II) was verified as the primary component responsible for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and peroxydisulfate (PDS) activation. Additionally, the main generation pathway for 1 O 2 differed between the MoO 2 -C/Fe(III)/PDS and MoO 2 -C/Fe(III)/PMS systems. This study provides a new strategy to improve the iron reduction properties of metal oxide materials.

Correlation of surface oxygen functional group with the iron reduction in MoO2-C/H2O2/Fe3+ system

Shiqi Chen,Xinyu Wang,Can Liu,Jiapeng Yue,Zhiwei Yang,Qian Ye,Hao Xu,Yujian Zhang,Xinyi Xing,Jing Zhang

Rational design and controllable synthesis of oxygen functional groups on carbon/metal catalysts surface as the effective means to enhance catalytic performance, however, still remains a great challenge. Herein, to obtain the relationship between oxygen functional groups and catalytic performance, taking MoO 2 -C as an object, the correlation between the C=O, C-O, Mo O bonds and strengthened iron reduction is quantitatively assessed, with electrochemical experiments validating that this relationship arises from its influence on the electron transport process, specifically concerning the roles of electron donors and mediators. The metal–oxygen and C-O bonds synergistically enhance electron transport, whereas the C=O and C-O bonds exhibit an antagonistic effect on electron-mediated processes. The influence of the metal–oxygen bonds was found to stem from their role as an electron donor, while the carbon–oxygen bonds primarily modulate the material’s catalytic properties by altering its electron transfer characteristics. In this study, the C-O, C=O bonds, and metal–oxygen bonds, as the typical surface oxygen functional groups, were identified the mechanism by changing the electron supply and mediation to enhance the Fe 3+ reduction reaction in the Fenton system, which provided theoretical support and design ideas for the design of catalyst with excellent catalytic properties.

Cu(II)-Based Water-Dispersible Humic Acid: Synthesis, Characterizations, and Antifungal and Growth-Promoting Performances

Yafu Tang,Shanmin Hou,Yuechao Yang,Dongdong Cheng,Bin Gao,Yongshan Wan,Yuncong C. Li,Zhen Yu,Yuanyuan Yao,Jiazhuo Xie

The complex synthesis process, low utilization, and single function of fungicides have seriously hindered the development of fungicides in resistance to rice sheath blight. Here, an inexpensive and multifunctional Cu(II)-based water-dispersible humic acid (Cu-WH) fungicide with growth-promoting ability was developed with a simple method. A 3D molybdate carbon hierarchical nanosphere (MoO2-C-HN) catalyst was successfully synthesized using a green route and applied in a solid-phase activation of lignite to obtain water-dispersible humic acid. Cu(II)-based water-dispersible humic acid (Cu-WH) was then formed through a simple reaction of Cu(II) and the humic acid. The resultant Cu-WH showed strong antifungal performance against Rhizoctonia solani in laboratory incubation experiments. After being treated with Cu3-WH (0.1 mg L–1), the control efficiency of rice sheath blight at 1, 3, and 5 days after infection was 90.54%, 78.96%, and 66.31%, respectively. It also enhanced the water-holding capacity of the substrate and thus effectively improved the growth of rice seedlings. In comparison to commercial rice seedling substrate, the substrate treated with 8 wt % of Cu3-WH increased plant height, stem diameter, fresh weight, and chlorophyll content by 19.23%, 35.91%, 14.52%, and 42.85%, respectively. The newly developed Cu-WH thus can be used as a novel low-cost efficient fungicide and growth stimulator to treat rice sheath blight as well as to increase rice production.

Construction of one-dimensional hierarchical MoO2/C with dominant dielectric loss for microwave absorption

Rong Qiang,Yuancheng Ding,Yulong Shao,Lei Rong,De Zhang,Rui Hao,Rui Xue,Na Xiao,Hongchen Liu,Jiawen Qiu

Driven by the rapid advancement of electronic devices and wireless communication technologies, there is an urgent demand for high-performance microwave absorbing materials. In this work, one-dimensional MoO 2 /C composites were synthesized through an in-situ polymerization-pyrolysis strategy. By precisely tuning the pyrolysis temperature, remarkable microwave absorption performance was achieved. The resulting material exhibits a minimum reflection loss of −59.1 dB at a matching thickness of 1.7 mm and delivers an effective absorption bandwidth of 5.6 GHz at 2.0 mm. Furthermore, it demonstrates a radar cross-section of 27.08 dB·m² at a 0° scattering angle. Comprehensive experimental and theoretical analyses reveal that the enhanced electromagnetic wave attenuation is primarily attributed to one-dimensional interfacial polarization at the interfaces between MoO 2 nanorods and porous carbon layers, as well as efficient axial electron transport pathways. This work presented a viable strategy for the preparation of one-dimensional MoO 2 -based dielectric microwave absorption materials.

Hollow spherical MoO2–C cocatalyst derived from Mo-polydopamine boosts photocatalytic hydrogen evolution of ZnIn2S4

Rui Liu,Yunpei Cui,Na Chai,Lei Yang,Xiufeng Zhang,Qianqian Nie,Hesheng Yu

This study developed an amorphous MoO 2 –C hollow spherical cocatalyst (MOC) derived from Mo-polydopamine, and hybridized it with ZnIn 2 S 4 to form ZnIn 2 S 4 /MoO 2 –C (ZMC) composites. Various characterizations were conducted to analyze the crystal structure, morphology, and photoelectrical properties of the ZMC composites. The prepared ZMC composites were evaluated for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution under simulated sunlight. Furthermore, nanorod-like MoO 2 –C cocatalyst (A-MOC) and ZnIn 2 S 4 /A-MOC (A-ZMC) composites were prepared to investigate the impact of carbon source on catalytic activity. Results show that the addition of MOC cocatalyst significantly enhances the hydrogen evolution rate of ZnIn 2 S 4 from 0.54 to 20.61 mmol g −1  h −1 , and increases the apparent quantum efficiency at 420 nm from 1.66 % to 8.63 %. The hydrogen evolution rate of the optimal ZMC is 1.26 times that of the optimal A-ZMC (16.28 mmol g −1  h −1 ). The crystal structure and morphology of MoO 2 –C determined by carbon source affect the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance of ZnIn 2 S 4 . Insight mechanism analysis indicates that the formation of a Schottky junction facilitates the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, thereby enhancing the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity. Finally, the ZMC composite catalyst retains 89 % of its original hydrogen evolution performance after 5 cycles over 15 h, demonstrating good stability and promising prospects for real-world applications.

Improved catalytic conversion of polysulfide by MoO2/C composite host for stable Li–S batteries

Du Gang,Zhao Jinguo,Yang Hongwei

Lithium-sulfur batteries with high theoretical energy density have drawn much attention during the past decades, while the shuttle effect of the polysulfide also hinders the practical application. The employment of suitable host materials has been considered as the effective strategy to inhibit the polysulfide migration. In this work, we develop MoO 2 /C composite as sulfur host material to increase the capacity of lithium-sulfur batteries while retaining high capacity after cycles. The MoO 2 /C composite could serves as active sites, effectively adsorbing and catalytically converting polysulfide, thus improving the redox kinetics and reducing shuttle effect. Owing to these merits, the as-prepared MoO 2 /C@S cathodes exhibit high capacity of 1165 mAh g −1 at 0.1 C. Meanwhile, the battery exhibits superior rate capability and stable cycling performance.

Novel flexible MWCNTs@MoO2-C nanocable composites with excellent electrochemical performance for lithium ion battery anodes

Jipeng Guan,Liping Zhao,Chenyang Xing,Yongjin Li

In this work, a novel flexible MWCNTs@MoO2-C nanocable composite for lithium ion battery anodes was fabricated by the electrospinning of homogeneously dispersed MWCNTs in a PVA/ammonium molybdate tetrahydrate solution and subsequent thermal treatment of the electrospun nanofibers. In the resulting MWCNTs@MoO2-C nanocable composite, the MoO2 nanoparticles were uniformly dispersed in amorphous carbon nanofibers that contained well-embedded MWCNTs as their cores. Compared with samples without MWCNTs, the unique nanocable composite exhibited not only a high specific capacity but also excellent cycling performance and good flexibility. It delivered a high reversible capacity of 832 mAh g−1 at a current density of 50 mA g−1 after 30 cycles. The enhanced electrochemical performance of the MWCNTs@MoO2-C nanocable composite was attributed to its novel nanocable structure ensuring not only effective contact between MoO2 and the liquid electrolyte, but also high conductivity for Li+ and e– transfer.

An electrochemical sensor for caffeic acid based on in-situ grown Co-MoO2@C/CNTs composite material

Maoheng Fei,Zixun Huang,Caiyu Ge,Zhifang Liu,Jiejun Li,Xiang Ye,Yixi Xie,Pengcheng Zhao,Junjie Fei

The development of efficient and sensitive electrochemical sensors for caffeic acid (CA) detection is critical for food safety and human health monitoring. However, conventional metal-organic framework (MOF) derivatives often suffer from particle agglomeration and limited electrical conductivity. Herein, we propose a novel in-situ growth strategy to construct a core-shell Co-MoO 2 @C composite, which is further integrated with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to achieve a “dispersive-supportive-catalytic” trifunctional sensing platform. Specifically, ZIF-67 was grown in situ on MoO 3 nanorods to form a core-shell MoO 3 @ZIF-67 precursor. Upon pyrolysis, this unique structure effectively prevented the agglomeration of Co nanoparticles and generated abundant Co-Mo-O active sites and heterojunction interfaces. The subsequent incorporation of CNTs not only constructed a highly conductive network but also significantly increased the electroactive surface area (3.65 mm 2 ) and adsorption capacity (1.744 nM·cm −2 ) via synergistic effects. The limit of detection (LOD) of the Co-MoO 2 @C/CNTs/GCE sensor for CA was 8.4 × 10 −10  M under the most suitable conditions. This work provides a new paradigm for designing MOF-oxide‑carbon ternary composites for advanced electrochemical sensing applications.

Anionic Biopolymer Assisted Preparation of MoO2@C Heterostructure Nanoparticles with Oxygen Vacancies for Ambient Electrocatalytic Ammonia Synthesis

Yueyao Du,Zhifeng He,Fangwei Ma,Yuchen Jiang,Jiafeng Wan,Guang Wu,Yifu Liu

Recently, Mo-based metal catalysts are widely applied in the electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) due to the lower binding energy between the Mo atom and N atom. The design of a Mo-based catalyst@carbon heterostructure and the introduction of anion vacancies are effective measures to improve their NRR performance. In this research, the cross-linked Vo-MoO2@C (Vo means oxygen vacancies) heterostructure nanoparticles with rich oxygen vacancies are first synthesized via pectin assisted hydrothermal reaction followed by calcination and treating with NaBH4 solution. Vo-MoO2@C exhibits good electrocatalytic NRR performance with an ammonia yield rate of 9.75 μg h–1 mg–1 at −0.5 V (RHE) and a Faraday efficiency (FE) of 3.24% at −0.3 V (RHE) under ambient conditions.

Effect of valence state on electrochemical nitrate reduction to ammonia in molybdenum catalysts

Jianyue Yan,Peng Liu,Jiawen Li,Hao Huang,Wenbo Song

Intended to investigate the alternative to the traditional Haber−Bosch process for generating ammonia, electrocatalytic nitrate reduction reaction (NRA) ensures a lower energy path and decentralized manner. Inspired by the nitrate reductase, we propose two Mo-based electrocatalysts with different Mo valences: MoO 2 -C nanoball-flower (MoO 2 -C NBF) with Mo (IV) sites and MoO 3 -C nanoball-flower (MoO 3 -C NBF) with Mo (Ⅵ) sites. The theoretical prediction reveals that the Mo (IV) sites have an enhanced catalytic activity and selectivity to ammonia rather the Mo (Ⅵ) sites. Similarly, the experimental results show that the MoO 2 -C NBF exhibits a superior NH 3 yield (109.28 µmol h −1 cm −2 ) and Faraday Efficiency (99.05 %). This work sheds light on the structure–activity relationship between valence state with NRA activity and paves the way for design and mechanism study of the Mo-based NRA electrocatalyst for the further development of sustainable NH 3 synthesis.
