Inkjet-printed paper-based semiconducting substrates for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy

Leilei Lan,Xiangyu Hou,Yimeng Gao,Xingce Fan,Teng Qiu

As a powerful analytical tool of molecular detection, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) has attracted great attention in varied fields. However, it has seriously impeded the development of SERS that the preparation process is generally complicated and traditional substrates lack eco-friendliness, economy and flexibility. Herein, we fabricated the inkjet-printed paper-based semiconducting SERS substrates for the first time via an inexpensive office inkjet printer with representative two-dimensional MoO3−x nanosheets ink. Compared with conventional substrates, these paper-based semiconducting substrates not only could meet the requirements of simple and large-scale preparation, but also realize efficient sample collection by merely swabbing the surface. We obtained the detection limit concentration of rhodamine 6G as low as 10–7 M. Furthermore, these flexible paper-based substrates were successfully applied to detect crystal violet and malachite green on the fish surface by swabbing. With immense potentiality in practical applications, the inkjet-printed paper-based semiconducting SERS substrates are expected to open a new prospect for SERS.

Controllable synthesis of the defect-enriched MoO3−x nanosheets as an effective visible-light photocatalyst for the degradation of organic dyes

Yuqi Zhang,Xiang Yu,Huan Liu,Xinyi Lian,Bin Shang,Yue Zhan,Tingting Fan,Zhou Chen,Xiaodong Yi

Transition metal oxides (TMOs) are emerging as a promising class of photocatalysts for pollutants' treatment. In this report, by integrating anti-solvent crystallization and thermal treatments, we have developed a facile and environmental approach for the synthesis of MoO3−x nanosheets in the presence of hexadecyl-trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB). The thickness of MoO3−x nanosheets varies from 20 nm to 40 nm. CTAB promotes the formation of nanosheet morphology and Mo5+ defects. Combining experimental results and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we demonstrate that the Mo5+ defect state in MoO3−x nanosheets can enhance visible light harvest and promote the separation of photo-generated electron–hole pairs. Hence, MoO3−x-8, the optimal photocatalyst, shows the highest concentration of surface Mo5+ defect (18.7%) and the best photocatalytic activity toward rhodamine B (RhB) photodegradation. About 95.9% RhB is degraded within 15 min under visible-light irradiation (λ > 420 nm). The kinetic rate of MoO3−x-8 reaches 117 times that of commercial MoO3. It was proved by the total organic carbon (TOC) measurements that about 43.3% of RhB molecules were degraded to CO2 and H2O. Overall, this work provides an effective pathway for the nanomaterial design and potential applications in the photocatalytic oxidation of organic pollutants.

A novel pseudocapacitance mechanism of elm seed-like mesoporous MoO3−x nanosheets as electrodes for supercapacitors

Qian-Long Lu,Shi-Xi Zhao,Chang-Ke Chen,Xia Wang,Yu-Feng Deng,Ce-Wen Nan

Pseudocapacitance is induced by surface or near surface redox, ion intercalation or underpotential deposition processes. A given electrochemically active material usually has only one of the above mechanisms. In this study, we synthesized elm seed-like mesoporous MoO3−x nanosheets, which possess both redox and intercalation faradic mechanisms. This novel pseudocapacitance mechanism causes a high capacitance of 1480 F g−1 at 5 A g−1 and outstanding cycling performance where the capacitance does not decay but increases slightly up to 10 000 cycles at a scan rate of 100 mV s−1. Here, we clarified that the tunnel structure of MoO3−x and its special electrochemical kinetics towards H+ generate this mechanism. This faradic mechanism could achieve a higher degree of utilization of the active-sites thus resulting in excellent electrochemical performance.

Nonstoichiometric Molybdenum Trioxide Adjustable Energy Barrier Enabling Ultralong-Life All-Solid-State Lithium Batteries

Xu Wang,Kang Guo,Yongyao Xia,Yulin Min,Qunjie Xu

The performance of lithium batteries is largely dependent on the ionic conductivity within robust solid electrolytes. Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-based electrolytes, however, have a low lithium ionic conductivity, which limits the hop of Li+. Herein, a novel PEO-based composite electrolyte is prepared that contains nonstoichiometric transition molybdenum trioxide (MoO3–x) nanosheets as fillers to improve the ionic conductivity. The MoO3–x nanosheets containing many oxygen vacancies can cross-link with PEO chains to reduce the energy barrier of Li+ migration and the matrix crystallinity, leading to an increase in the lithium-ion transference number (up to 0.56) and a high ionic conductivity (up to 6 × 10–4 S cm–1) at 60 °C. Meanwhile, the incorporation of MoO3–x nanosheets alleviates the decomposition of the electrolyte, enhancing the tensile strength by ∼4 times compared to PEO. As a result, a LiFePO4/Li cell with PEO/LiTFSI/MoO3–x (PLM3–x) delivers an excellent rate capability, high capacity, and lifespan during high rates (2 C, ≥10 000 cycles), which demonstrates a facile yet effective strategy toward high-performance lithium batteries.
